Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger of Halestorm join us for an Audacy Check In to talk about life on the road, their new single, "Like A Woman Can," and more.
Transcript
00:00It's always surprising because we'll be, like I said, in the middle of nowhere,
00:03and one of our favorite things to do on days off with us,
00:06and there's some of the crew of our crew that really gets into it as well,
00:10is go to karaoke bars.
00:12And yeah, I'm always surprised at there's a handful of people that are,
00:16maybe they don't notice at first, and then as the night goes on,
00:20I'm like, wait, are you?
00:23And then sometimes they start badgering me into singing our own songs,
00:27which feels so self-serving and really weird,
00:29but it's always, it's a good time.
00:33It's an Aussie check-in, it's Abe Cannon, it's Lizzie and Joe from Hailstorm.
00:37So I just talked to Lizzie, Joe, like a few weeks ago,
00:41and you guys were at the casino, and she mentioned, Joe,
00:45that you were playing three-card poker.
00:48So I was wondering if you won any money playing three-card poker.
00:52No.
00:53No.
00:54It did not happen that night.
00:56The house always wins.
00:58I do not have my grandma's luck.
01:00She always won at the casino, but not me.
01:02And you just had a birthday too, right, Joe?
01:04Yeah, this weekend.
01:07Yeah, 22nd, whenever that day was.
01:08That was a couple days ago.
01:09But Sunday.
01:09Yeah, Sunday.
01:10We had a good time.
01:11I don't remember the end of the night, so it was great.
01:14Like, you guys pretty much just have fun every day,
01:16so does it even matter when you have a birthday?
01:18Like, how is a birthday different from you playing, like, you know, a theater?
01:23Yeah, you know, there's not that much of a difference.
01:26Yeah, it's really not.
01:27It's, yeah, it's just, it's what it is.
01:29Now that you mention it, yeah, it's just kind of like, I don't know.
01:32We try to have as good of a time as we can as often as we can
01:35because we get to play this rock and roll that we love.
01:38So we haven't worked in, like, 20-some years.
01:41So, I don't know.
01:42This is, you know, I highly recommend joining a band.
01:44It's the best time you'll ever have.
01:46It is the coolest thing ever.
01:48It really is a privilege to be able to just go around the world and have fun,
01:53if you have the right mindset, right?
01:55Because you could also be like, oh, God, I got to travel,
01:58I got to take all these planes, all these bus rides.
02:00Or, like you guys, you just enjoy every minute of it,
02:04and then you just live a great life.
02:06Absolutely.
02:06And it just, you know, you appreciate things as you go along, too,
02:11because when we first started touring, it was like,
02:13first it was like a conversion van, and then it was two RVs
02:17that we were touring with and trying to keep up with the buses
02:20and whoever we were touring with.
02:22And so it's like, yeah.
02:24It's never been hard.
02:25It's always, you know, we get to play rock shows.
02:27Yeah.
02:28You're right.
02:29It's a total mindset thing because there are some people that are miserable,
02:33which is fine, you know, be miserable.
02:36That's an option.
02:38But I don't know.
02:40I still love it.
02:41I'm glad we get to do this.
02:43It's a gift.
02:44And you always see the people who, like, when they're done touring,
02:47when they can't tour anymore, they actually miss touring.
02:50They don't miss sleeping.
02:51Oh, yeah.
02:52Absolutely.
02:52There's always a moment in time, like,
02:55we'll have these, like, stretches in between tour.
02:57Now, like, last year was ridiculous.
03:00Like, we were out consistently from, like, May through December up until Christmas.
03:05And in between every tour, we had maybe, like, four days, two days.
03:08The longest was, like, six days at home.
03:11Make a video in between.
03:12But, like, it's just, yeah.
03:13Yeah.
03:13So last year was ridiculous.
03:15But it's, like, there is a point in time where it's, like, you know,
03:17we've been home for about a month or so.
03:20And it's, like, it's with some one-offs in between.
03:22But there's a point in time where you're, like, man, there's something missing.
03:27And it's, like, oh, yeah, I actually, like, miss being with my buddies out in the middle of nowhere, you
03:32know,
03:33playing a gig.
03:34And so, yeah, it's a beautiful thing.
03:36If we've learned anything, it's not where you are, it's who you're with.
03:39And then, you know, you can be at Applebee's on the side of the road in Nebraska.
03:45We have.
03:47One of the best nights ever.
03:48You know, like, it's a good time.
03:50I forget when this was, but there was one point in time where we had to figure out how to
03:55make it across the highway
03:56to get to a Cracker Barrel, because that was literally the only thing around on a day off.
04:02And we finally made it there.
04:03It was, like, a triumph.
04:04And then we just stayed at the Cracker Barrel, like, playing checkers and, you know, ordering snacks.
04:11Ignoramus.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Ignoramus came.
04:13Remember that one?
04:13The little pegs.
04:14Yeah.
04:14Yeah.
04:15I remember you guys posted a video, too.
04:17You just went to some random dive karaoke bar, and you just started singing karaoke.
04:21Like, that's fun.
04:22I mean, I'm just sitting there having a drink,
04:25and you guys walk in.
04:27Like, that just must be amazing, just for the random.
04:29I'm sure there were some Hailstorm fans there.
04:32There were.
04:32And it's always surprising, because we'll be, like I said, in the middle of nowhere.
04:37And one of our favorite things to do on days off with us,
04:40and, like, there's some of the crew of our crew that really gets into it as well,
04:43is go to karaoke bars.
04:45And, yeah, I'm always surprised that, like, there's a handful of people that are,
04:50maybe they don't notice it first, and then, like, as the night goes on,
04:53and I'm like, wait, are you, you know?
04:56And then sometimes they start badgering me into singing our own songs,
05:01which feels so self-serving and really weird, but it's always, it's a good time.
05:05Yeah.
05:05Is there a go-to karaoke song for you, Lizzie?
05:08It's always in rotation.
05:10If I want to, I try to play to the audience.
05:13If we're in, like, you know, kind of a mellower, like, more kind of country bar,
05:16I'll do some Bonnie Raitt to start out, and then I'll kick it up with some Pat Benatar,
05:21maybe some ACDC after that.
05:22You've got to ease them into it every, you know.
05:25And then, yeah, sometimes I'll, like, once things get rolling,
05:30so we're like, oh, can you do this?
05:31Or, hey, do you want to do a duet with me?
05:34And so, like, sometimes it just turns out hanging, you know, with some locals
05:37and just throwing stuff at the wall, so it's fun.
05:40When you end up on that Bad Company tribute album, like you did, like a shooting star,
05:46like, is that a song that you used to perform, or is it just a song that you decided to
05:49do?
05:50Because, you know, we're around the same age, and, like, Bad Company has,
05:53Bad Company's been around our entire lives before we were born.
05:56So they were always there.
05:58You were born into Bad Company already being around.
06:01So it's like, there wasn't a point, like, at some point,
06:05Limp Bizkit came out when we were, you know, whatever.
06:07But, like, Bad Company have always been around.
06:10So what's it like to, you know, be on that album,
06:13and then, like, Paul Rogers was actually in the video with you guys and everything?
06:17Like, what was that like?
06:18It was so amazing.
06:20We had never covered it previous to that.
06:22It was always just in our DNA, and, like, we knew the song,
06:25and we loved the story, and, you know, wanted to give it a little juice.
06:28And what an honor to be on that album.
06:33And then, yeah, I just kept having to, like, pinch myself because Paul Rogers is on,
06:38and I kept saying, that means that Paul Rogers knows who we are.
06:41Like, that's amazing to me.
06:43Like, as a singer, are you kidding me?
06:45Yeah, he actually came out to our show up in Canada.
06:47He lives up there now.
06:48And he came and said hi, and he's such a sweetheart.
06:51Yeah, he's so nice.
06:53I can't wait.
06:53We're going to see him this weekend, Lizzie singing with him in Palm Springs.
06:57Yeah, I'm doing the Sound and Vision Awards, and it's honoring Paul Rogers and Geezer Butler.
07:03And so I'm doing two Sabbath songs and two Bad Company songs.
07:06And I'll tell you, man, to sing Bad Company, like, I know everybody wants to, like,
07:11go out and karaoke, but to actually truly, like, immerse yourself into all of the timing
07:16and the soul that he puts into everything, that's a difficult thing to do, you know?
07:21You know, it's as a crazy, you know, chick from Pennsylvania, it's a challenge.
07:27But, yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun.
07:28I want to talk about Everest in a second.
07:30But when you look at your catalog of not your latest song, but all your other songs, you know,
07:35there's some deep cuts from Hailstorm that your casual fans will never know about, right?
07:40What do you think are those songs that the casual Hailstorm fans should just go take?
07:47Like, for instance, I love Danzig, right?
07:49So, like, I'll be like, hey, listen to Blood and Tears or something.
07:52Like, there's these deep cuts that I feel like if people would just hear that song,
07:56it would really get them into, like, all of your music.
07:59I mean, it depends on, like, if you go on, like, the softer side and listen to maybe The Silence,
08:05which is the last track on Vicious, it's a good acoustic song.
08:08Yeah.
08:09Like, oh, that's what her, like, her voice is insane.
08:12That's a good one.
08:13Or off that album, too, there's also Buzz.
08:15Remember Buzz?
08:16Oh, yeah.
08:17Like, I feel like we've played it maybe twice out live because, like, nobody ever talks about that one.
08:22Or, like, Skulls.
08:22That was a lot of fun.
08:23Oh, yeah, Skulls is a good one, too.
08:24Skulls is a good ripper on that one.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Yeah, I don't know.
08:27And then there's also, like, we put out a lot of B-sides and stuff, like, just things that, like,
08:31didn't necessarily, like, go with the concept of the record, but we'll throw them out there.
08:36And, like, there's a song called Alien that we had out there after Back From The Dead.
08:41And every now and again, we'll get, like, a request.
08:43Like, one person in the meet and greet line will be like, can you play that song?
08:46Like, oh, my God.
08:48So, yeah.
08:49No, it's crazy.
08:51It's, like, what people don't realize is that it's not like you just write 12 songs,
08:5610 songs for a record.
08:58You write 60 songs so you can narrow it down to 12 or 10, you know?
09:02And so it's, like, there's so much that nobody's actually heard.
09:06Yeah, we've been doing this a while.
09:07Our catalog is starting to get a little deep.
09:09We're six records in, right?
09:11Yeah.
09:11Six?
09:11Yeah.
09:12Jeez.
09:13Yeah.
09:13Then that post...
09:14You have hundreds of unreleased songs, you're saying?
09:17Probably.
09:18Probably.
09:18Yeah.
09:18We should really do a count.
09:19Most of them are probably unreleased for a reason.
09:23That's true.
09:24Well, 60 years from now, when you guys are gone, someone's going to put out that music.
09:27I know.
09:28Someone's going to dig it all up.
09:29I'm going to burn this hard drive.
09:31Yeah.
09:31Burn that hard drive.
09:32Not that one.
09:33Not that one.
09:34Yeah.
09:34Hey, it sounds like you should put Buzz back into the set list.
09:37We should.
09:38We should.
09:38I don't even remember how to...
09:39I think it's in B.
09:40I don't know.
09:41Yeah.
09:42I'd have to...
09:42When you listen to it, is it about having a buzz from a beer or is it about a vibrator?
09:46You got to just tell me.
09:48Figure it out.
09:49Figure it out.
09:49That's a choose your own adventure.
09:53So you guys are actually going to South America.
09:56Those are the most insane crowds, right?
09:58Yeah.
09:59They really are.
10:00What is it about them?
10:01Is it just they appreciate it more than we do?
10:04They're not as jaded as we are?
10:05What is it?
10:06It's got to be...
10:07There's a passion that runs deep and it's like this beautiful, desperate passion.
10:14They're waiting for you at the airport.
10:16They're camped outside the hotel room, like singing at night and like, it's wild.
10:21It's a...
10:22I love it.
10:23I mean, maybe, you know, not that many bands.
10:25Bands get down there kind of all the time, but like, it's not like a U.S. tour, you know,
10:30like you're touring the U.S. once a year.
10:31We haven't been down there in 10 years.
10:33So it's just, I think it's a rare commodity.
10:38But I remember the first time we ever went down there.
10:40What year was that?
10:41That was...
10:422013.
10:42Yeah, 2013.
10:43And, you know, we got off the airplane and they had assigned us these like four strapping
10:49lads as our security people.
10:51And I'm like, this is a little overkill, guys.
10:52We've never been here before.
10:53No one's going to...
10:54No, and good Lord, was I wrong.
10:56Like, these guys had to carry me into the venue by my elbows because everyone kept trying
11:01to take my clothes and like...
11:02Oh my God, it's like the Potty Guard with Whitney Houston.
11:04It was wild.
11:06I'm like, Jesus.
11:06Okay, you were right.
11:07This is amazing.
11:08And then we played like one of our first shows that we played and it was every single song
11:14they had a sign.
11:15Like, everybody had signs for every single song in the set list.
11:19Oh, here's I Miss the Misery.
11:20Here's the O's.
11:20Here's Freak Like Me.
11:21Here's Freak.
11:22And then at the end of the night, we played Here's to Us.
11:24And I don't know where they were hiding balloons, like under the seats or in their backpacks
11:28or whatever.
11:28But everybody just threw balloons up in the air.
11:30I'm like, this is amazing.
11:31It's like...
11:32They brought their own production.
11:32Yeah, exactly.
11:33So I love it.
11:35And I can't wait to go back.
11:36And they set fires that don't like burn stuff down somehow.
11:39Like they have fires everywhere, but they don't hear it either.
11:43Yeah.
11:43Oh, is it flares?
11:44Okay.
11:44But they're massive.
11:45Yeah, it's crazy.
11:47Yeah, they're not afraid of the flames.
11:49Shooting fireworks in the middle of the show.
11:51Like, what are you guys doing?
11:53All right, cool, man.
11:53What could go wrong?
11:55Okay, so the new album, Everest.
11:57And Like A Woman Can, I feel like the structure of that song is beautifully put together.
12:03It kind of describes a woman to me because it's gentle, but it's powerful, the song.
12:11I feel like you structured the song perfectly for the title of the song.
12:15Oh, thank you so much.
12:17I appreciate that.
12:18But it's, you know, I feel that too.
12:20It embodies the, you know, the feeling that you get from being loved by a woman.
12:25And there's nothing like that.
12:27And so, yeah, asking your counterpart, like, man, meet me in the middle.
12:31Let's go.
12:32I need you.
12:33You need me.
12:33Let's make it happen.
12:35I appreciate that.
12:36That's awesome.
12:37And get the album, Everest.
12:39Buy it on vinyl.
12:40Because if you have, it's just so much better to have it.
12:43Like, the artwork.
12:44Yeah.
12:45Digital to me.
12:46I mean, I listen, honestly, mostly at digital.
12:49But to hold, because, like, if you're, like, when you guys are wearing your headphones, you can't be carrying around
12:54a turntable.
12:55But it's just so much better just to look at, like, when I was a kid, reading the lyrics, looking
13:00at the artwork, it was a big part of it.
13:04So, vinyl's back.
13:05So, buy the vinyl.
13:07Absolutely.
13:07Buy the vinyl.
13:08And that's something that we paid a lot of attention to when we were making this record and making the
13:12artwork.
13:12It's, like, we wanted it to be an experience that you can have tangibly and listen to the whole story
13:18front to back.
13:19And, yeah.
13:21And we hired a great artist that covers off.
13:22It's nice to see the cover big, you know, in 12 by 12.
13:26And it flips open.
13:28So, there's actually, like, it's way bigger than just the front cover.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Yeah.
13:33Vinyl's always cool, man.
13:34I'm, like, I mean, I think we have, like, 1,500 records here at home.
13:38Yeah, we have a problem.
13:39We're just collectors.
13:40We tour with a tour.
13:42It's a record player that opens up.
13:44Oh, wow.
13:44And there's a whiskey bar.
13:46And it's, like, our party starter when we're on the road in the U.S.
13:50And so, come out.
13:52We always leave for a tour with, like, four or five records and come home with, like, you know, hit
13:56record shops all over the country and come home with, like, 20 or 30.
13:59And after 10 years of that, it's kind of built up into a collection.
14:03We need more shelf space.
14:04Yeah.
14:05Thank you guys so much.
14:06That was great.
14:07So much for having us, man.
