Two fifths of Parcels made their way to Genius to break down their song “Sorry,” off their album LOVED. The duo each tap into their own interpretations of the track, from why they fought so hard to keep it alive, to the emotional tug-of-war that makes love feel painful in the best and worst ways. They open up about what the song means to them while reflecting on their own creative process and how it all came together.

00:00There's a lot said without any words when we're writing together.
00:03I think I really like not knowing specifically what you're talking about in a song.
00:07And sometimes you can't actually pinpoint it yourself.
00:09Trying to work it out or trying to talk about it can ruin it.
00:13That's the whole concept of this show.
00:15Yeah, so I'm not going to say anything more.
00:24We're kind of deep into the album, writing the songs.
00:27And I remember we're at my house and we're like, okay, sorry, that's going to be the one.
00:32And we went into the studio and tracked it with the band with live drums and stuff.
00:38It wasn't landing.
00:39It was like Afrobeat but live.
00:42It was terrible, yeah.
00:43It wasn't good.
00:44We were not hitting it.
00:45No.
00:46And it was like one evening in that studio with all the synths and drums.
00:50We're like, let's go one more time.
00:52Track a bunch of drums.
00:53See if we can find a new groove and feeling.
00:55And it's like, we saved it.
00:56Some songs are a real fight like that.
00:58You're really like fighting for it.
01:00And for some reason inside you, you want to fight for it.
01:03We wanted to fight for that one.
01:05I'm sorry for the climb all the way up.
01:10I'm sorry for the fall on the way back down.
01:14I'm sorry for the time that we gave up.
01:19I'm sorry for the fire and the shaky ground.
01:23Take all this with a grain of salt because I don't know what I'm talking about.
01:27Every verse is getting more confusing.
01:30I'm questioning the thing more and more with every verse.
01:33The first one is like actually just apologizing.
01:35And I think I'm like, it's talking about a relationship.
01:38Being in love with somebody.
01:39And the time that we gave up.
01:41Feel with somebody for a long time and it doesn't work out.
01:43I feel genuinely sorry for the time that both people put in.
01:48That's all we have is time.
01:49So that's tough.
01:50On one hand, I genuinely wanted to say sorry to somebody.
02:11There's a relationship and I'm talking about all the pain that comes with that for better
02:16or worse.
02:16But I think I'm also talking to myself and I think I'm also talking to just everybody.
02:21I wanted it to be about how love is painful.
02:25When it's good and when it's bad.
02:26There's an element of heartbreak to it all in a way.
02:28I'm sorry that the world isn't easy.
02:34I'm sorry for the mess that your mother made.
02:39I'm sorry for the lies and the leaving.
02:43I'm sorry for the games and the way we play.
02:48We're not in the relationship.
02:49We're talking about just the external and it's like maybe everything that's out of our
02:53control.
02:54The world isn't easy.
02:55Our parents fuck us up.
02:56They make mistakes.
02:57We lie.
02:58We leave.
02:58We're maybe zooming out there to the world.
03:01I get the feeling that it's towards yourself at the same time.
03:05It's like inward outward at the same time.
03:07That's my interpretation of it.
03:08It's like you're speaking to yourself at the same time as speaking outwards.
03:15I'm sorry that I want you to feel love.
03:19I'm sorry that I want you to be okay.
03:24I'm sorry that I fear what you think of.
03:27I'm sorry that it's hard when you go away.
03:33I just don't know with that song.
03:34I feel like sometimes it's a bit petty.
03:36If you read it in the right tone, it's like, sorry that I want you to feel good.
03:39Sorry that I want you to be okay.
03:42I'm doing my best here kind of thing.
03:44I feel that sometimes.
03:45Maybe I sense within myself a little bit of anger towards somebody in that.
03:50Again, maybe just the feeling of it hurts to be loved.
03:52I feel love and that's hard.
03:54I want you to be okay and that can be hard in certain situations.
03:58I fear what you think of.
03:59I'm spinning on what somebody else is thinking because I love them.
04:03I'm sorry that it's hard when you go away.
04:05I always just think I'm the one that's always going away.
04:08No, that was like way too much just talking about ourselves.
04:16It's like to hate myself.
04:17No, it was actually interesting.
04:19It's interesting to talk about lyrics.
04:21We don't do it much.
04:22It's like forcing you to think about it and I wouldn't usually, I guess.
04:26Yeah, just cool.
