00:00At the end of last season, you know, Ray gives Renee the opportunity to tell him about Jorge's death, but she doesn't do it.
00:07In his eyes, what does that tell him about their relationship?
00:14Well, you know, it's when you're dealing when you're kind of a shady person, I notice you don't trust other people.
00:22You know what I mean? So it's kind of like the baggage of all these lies.
00:26The way that I look at Ray is like, you know, Ray has gotten himself into such an entanglement.
00:32He can't get it out of his he can't get out of his own way, you know, and, you know, Riley and I's relationship has always been complicated as our characters have like kind of like done this dance.
00:45But what I think is kind of cool is that there's a reckoning coming and that Ray and Renee have to really get honest with each other.
00:56Riley, I was going to ask you, why doesn't she tell him, you know, does she ultimately not trust him?
01:04You know, I think at the end of the day, there's a part of both Renee and Ray that will maybe never trust each other until possibly a reckoning.
01:15You know, if you look at how their relationship started, it was based on lies and using each other and back and forth.
01:22And there's like they're playing house now.
01:25But I think the old Renee and the old Ray still live within them.
01:30And there is just this level of like, can I actually trust this person?
01:35And so I think why she doesn't, one, it's a very big secret and it's a very scary secret to tell anyone.
01:42I think she's hoping it will just all go away.
01:46And two, I think she is concerned in his reaction.
01:51He is a cop.
01:52He's very engulfed in his work.
01:54Like, does he, would he help her?
01:57Would he understand?
01:58Can she trust him?
02:00I think all those questions are kind of weighing on her.
02:04So, yeah.
02:05Yeah.
02:05It was an accident.
02:06I will say that, like, she didn't do it like.
02:09It was an accident.
02:11Intentionally.
02:12Yes.
02:13So the cleanup was messy, but it was accidental.
02:18Yes.
02:18James, when it comes to Ray, he's not exactly someone who lets things go very easily.
02:24Is he going to continue to dig about Jorge's death?
02:30Ray, you know, Ray's going to dig a lot of things and maybe it's his own hole.
02:37Right.
02:37You know, the thing about Ray is Ray's also so narcissistic and self-involved.
02:43He kind of just glazes over a lot of other things.
02:47But, you know, where we're coming from, it's not, I think it's only the difference between season two and season three time-wise.
02:57It's not that much.
02:58So, yeah, the death of Jorge is still a big part of our driving storyline.
03:04You know, Renee was pregnant at the end of last season.
03:07You know, Riley, how is she sort of navigating being a mom again in the midst of just, you know, just a vault of secrets?
03:17So much stuff going on.
03:18There's the Frankie element.
03:19That's a lot for her to have to deal with.
03:21It's a lot.
03:22It's a lot for her to navigate.
03:25She has a bunch of deep, dark secrets that she's having to navigate while living with her cop boyfriend, who is now the father of her new baby.
03:33And so she's, you know, at the beginning of the season, we find her at home with the kids, you know, Ray's kind of engulfed in his work, her usual.
03:44And on the surface, I think it almost represents the life that she really was fighting for, which is possibly a stable life, a lot more safe.
03:55But I think we also see a part of her that maybe misses the rush of her old life, maybe misses the power.
04:06You know, she's been made to be kind of powerless by men and like throughout her life.
04:12And I think there's a part of her that feels like she needs to fill this void that she's missing.
04:19Maybe this housewife life isn't exactly what she's really, really did want.
04:25She's kind of convinced herself she did.
04:27But is it what she really wants or really needs or really is?
04:30I was going to like to follow up on that, you know, do you think Renee feels more in control of her life with Ray or is it a different kind of unpredictability than what she had with Frankie?
04:42There was a certain power with with Frankie, even though he was he terrified her on so many levels.
04:47Yes.
04:49Like you said, a rush, a power there.
04:51There was.
04:52And I think, you know, she spent especially all of season two trying her best to get away from that, away from that danger.
05:01She was constantly, you know, saying, I just want a normal life.
05:04I want what's best for me and my kids.
05:07But I think with all these characters in Hightown, we see they're all flawed.
05:11And I think that kind of comes to the surface with Renee this season where we see, you know, maybe she does have a little bit of an addiction to the power that that feeling of being someone and being a boss.
05:26And when she's at home, you know, in her pajamas with her kids, it's kind of takes away the glamour.
05:34It takes away all of that that she was used to.
05:37And even though it's stable and she's now with someone that she can, you know, be a lot more safe with.
05:44I think there's there's something that she's still missing.
05:48Yeah.
05:48There's a yearning there.
05:50Yes.
05:51James, we see from the trailer that Frankie is still alive.
05:55I thought for sure that man was a goner.
05:58He's somehow still kicking.
05:59How will he continue to cause problems for these two?
06:04Because he always manages to do so, even if he's behind bars.
06:09One of my favorite things on the show is that, you know, the bad guys are good guys.
06:15The good guys are bad guys.
06:17And and what a Maori has done to Frankie.
06:19Frankie is such an amazing, complicated, beautiful character that is also empathetic, you know.
06:25So get ready for Frankie this year because he ain't going down without a fight, you know.
06:32I feel like we've been read like every single time this man can't do anything else.
06:39Add another twist in there.
06:41He manages.
06:42He manages to have more control behind bars than anyone else I know.
06:45So, you know, this is true.
06:47This is true.
06:49He's unstoppable.
06:50And with Ray getting his job back, obviously, that caused a lot of tension with Alan and there's the Jackie element.
06:58You know, how is he?
07:00Does he have that power rush?
07:01How's how's he doing back at work?
07:04You know, it's you know, the show deals in a lot of with a lot of addictions to a lot of different things.
07:12And I think Ray is someone who's obsessed with his work and he's addicted to his job and he's addicted to that rush.
07:19You know, I think it's a it gives him a sense of purpose.
07:23And, you know, I think that's to a fault because you you really especially when the season starts, you're going to you're going to see a lot of a lot of the holes in the other side of his life that he historically has not been good at.
07:37Well, with Jackie, one of the things that there's so many relationships that I love on the show and I love the dynamic between Jackie and Ray, you know, she calls him at the end of last season and he's like, I'll come get you like I'll come be with you like, you know, if you need me and he keeps telling her just go inside, just go inside the house and not understanding that it was a drug dealer's house.
07:59You know, is he going to pick up on that maybe she's sort of fallen off the wagon?
08:06You know, is it something that he's sort of always cognizant of?
08:09I think I think Ray, the Ray and Jackie relationship is kind of one of the pure relationships in this in the show where they've found this kind of common ground that that they don't cross each other that much.
08:24You know, so, you know, Ray cares.
08:27I care.
08:28And, you know, Jackie is as we begin the third and final season, she's in the throes of it.
08:38She's gone off the rails hard.
08:41You know.
08:42I cannot wait to see what twists and turns this season throws at us.
08:47You guys always manage to shock me in many, many ways.
08:52And it's been such a ride so far.
08:54And thank you guys so much for taking the time to speak with me about these two crazy kids.
