00:00So how does it all start? Allah, nothing else. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam he says,
First there was Allah and there was absolutely nothing
00:27else. No throne, no pen, no water, no clouds, no skies, no nothing. And Abu Razeen, there's
00:35an authentic hadith in Sunnah Tirmidhi where Abu Razeen, he asked the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
00:40wa sallam, he says, well where was Allah before all of this? And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
00:45wa sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says,
00:48There was no air beneath him, no air above him. It was just Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
00:54And you think about that and how amazing that is. And actually there's a sign in that where
00:59the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he basically tells us that there is nothing but Allah
01:02that's worth it. Creation needs Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and nothing else because in the beginning
01:08there was Allah and there was nothing else. And so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
01:12he says that the أصدق بيت قاله الشاعر, he said that the most truthful poem that a poet
That verily everything but Allah
01:24subhanahu wa ta'ala is disposable. Because it was just Allah and nothing else. Now a lot of times, you know what
01:30Abu Razeen radiya Allah ta'ala anhu was doing when he asked the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that and what we do
01:34at times when we see various ahadith where Allah is described, we try to limit Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala by our human dimension. So for example,
01:44Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala descends in the last third of the night and he asks,
01:50The very famous hadith, is there anyone seeking forgiveness so I may forgive him? Is there anyone calling upon me so that I may answer him?
01:57And we start to think to ourselves, well wait a minute, the last third of the night here is different from the last third of the night there.
02:02And so how is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala hearing everyone and how is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, you know, how does he judge what's the last third of the night?
02:09And what about Laylatul Qadr? And how does that all work? The problem is you're limiting Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala by your human dimensions.
02:16Allah is not subject to your time, Allah created time. So when you say, can Allah really hear everyone's prayers? Right?
02:23I mean on the day of Arafah, think about that momentous occasion of Arafah, you've got millions of people in one location, all calling upon Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in different languages.
02:32And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is hearing each and every single one of their prayers. Why? Because that's Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
02:39He is the creator of time subhanahu wa ta'ala, so he is not subject to our dimensions of time. He's not subject to our human dimensions of anything.
02:48And that's why the ulamat, the scholars, they have a very important principle that they say,
02:53Every time you think of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, anything that comes to your head in terms of an image or in terms of trying to assign a human quality,
03:05just know that Allah is different from what you just imagined. You're not going to be able to do it.
03:10You won't be able to actually grasp Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala cannot be grasped by our human minds.
03:18So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he makes a beautiful du'a on the basis of this,
First it was Allah and there was nothing but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
03:29The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he taught us to say,
03:34Oh Allah, you are the first and so there is nothing before you.
03:41And you are the last and so there is nothing after you.
03:47And you are the manifest, the apparent and so nothing is above you.
03:54But at the same time you are the hidden and so nothing is beyond you.
03:58And so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, what he's teaching us here is that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the first,
04:03but he's also the last.
04:05And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the manifest, but he's also the hidden.
04:08And that's why you have the very famous ayah in Surah Al-Hadeed which actually combines these names together where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
04:23That he is the first and the last.
04:25And the presence of the letter, wow here, the ulema, the scholars they say,
04:29that what Allah is telling us is that he's the first despite being the last.
04:34He is the manifest despite being the hidden at the same time.
04:38And so when you get this presence of, or when you get this idea of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala being so mighty,
04:46of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala being the almighty and being the king,
04:48and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala being all of these things that he describes himself with,
04:54you might start to think that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is disconnected.
04:57Like a king is usually disconnected from the lowest subjects.
05:01A king usually doesn't really know what's going on except by what he's informed with.
05:06So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, right after he describes himself,
05:09and he describes the creation of the heavens and the earth,
05:11and he describes the creation of the throne, and he describes all of these things,
05:15Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, but listen,
05:20Allah is so aware that he knows what goes into the earth and what comes out of it.
05:24He knows everything, right?
05:26Now the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he also taught us,
05:29and there are many names that we can take from this beautiful hadith of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam here,
05:34and many attributes. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
05:36he also taught us to call upon Allah with his greatest name,
05:40اسم الله الأعظم, the greatest name of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
05:44And the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he didn't share what that name was,
05:47but he said Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that the greatest name of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
05:51is found in Surat Al-Baqarah, it's found in Surat Ali Imran,
05:56and it's found in Surat At-Taha, okay, in Surat At-Taha.
05:59So the first one, what we can take from that,
06:05Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the greatest ayah in Surat Al-Baqarah,
06:08the greatest ayah of the Qur'an, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
06:10Allah, there is no God besides Him, الحي القيوم,
06:14the ever-living and the ever-sustaining.
06:17That same name is found in the beginning of Surat Ali Imran,
06:22Once again, the ever-living, the ever-sustaining.
06:25And then in Surat At-Taha, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
06:31That everything perishes, that the faces,
06:33that everything perishes and everything is presented to,
06:38Once again, the ever-living and the ever-sustaining.
06:41And what the ulama say are so powerful about those two names.
06:44Number one, all of the صفات الذاتية,
06:47which are the attributes that describe the essence of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
06:51they all come from His being الحي,
06:54from His being ever-living.
06:55And all of the صفات الفعلية,
06:57all of the attributes that describe the actions of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
07:01come from His being القيوم,
07:03which is ever-sustaining.
07:05Because usually what you think of a person,
07:07or if you think of a human being,
07:09as they get older, they start to become less capable.
07:12But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala never is rendered incapable.
07:15Allah is ever-living, He always was, He always is, He always will be.
07:19And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is always
07:23He's always in control.
07:24Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not age,
07:26Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not become incapable.
07:31Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala never becomes tired,
07:33never has to take a nap,
07:35never becomes drowsy.
07:37Allah is always in control.
07:39So Al-Hay, He is the ever-living,
07:41and all life is derived from Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.
07:44Al-Qayyum, He is always sustaining,
07:47and everything, and anything,
07:49and everything will only be sustained by Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.
07:56So it just starts off with that.
07:57It was Allah, and there was absolutely nothing else.
08:00It was the infinite, and then everything finite came after that.
08:03It was the one who needs no cause,
08:05and then everything that needs a cause,
08:07that is created, comes after that.
08:09We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
08:11may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to derive,
08:13to have eternal life on the day of judgment.
08:16Allahumma amin.
08:19As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
