00:14Welcome back to Amazed by the Qur'an
00:15A series in which I try to share with you what I find amazing about the Qur'an
00:19Today I want to start this conversation briefly with a description of the difference between nouns and verbs
00:24That will help you appreciate the ayat that I want to talk about
00:27So by definition nouns like apple, tree, happiness, etc
00:32Nouns don't have a tense, they're not past or present or future
00:35They're timeless in that sense
00:37So rhetorically speaking a noun is considered timeless
00:40Verbs on the other hand have tense, past tense or present tense or future tense
00:44Even the imperative is in the present tense in the sense
00:46So tenses or verbs are temporary because they are caged in time
00:53So nouns are timeless and verbs are caged in time
00:56Now what happens in the Arabic language interestingly is sometimes when you're talking about an act
01:02You can actually use a noun or a verb
01:05And when you translate that into the English language
01:08When you translate it in the Qur'an for example
01:10An average translation
01:11We don't have that luxury in English
01:14So we always translate it as a verb
01:16So you don't get to see that sometimes what we're thinking is a verb
01:20Was actually used as a noun in the Qur'an
01:23Because they're just exactly the same way that would be translated
01:26So for instance not in the Qur'an but in regular Arabic
01:29ุฃุฌู„ุณูˆ, I'm sitting
01:30ุฃู†ุง ุฌุงู„ุณ, I'm sitting
01:32While ุฃุฌู„ุณูˆ is a verb and ุฌุงู„ุณ is a noun
01:36So you wouldn't tell, you'd translate the same way I'm sitting
01:38Now let's appreciate the rhetorical difference as is used in the Qur'an
01:44It's very subtle
01:45So I'll give you three examples of that in order of complexity
01:48The first example is about hypocrites talked about in Surah Al-Baqarah
01:53And Allah says that when they come to believers
01:57They say that they believe
01:59ูˆูŽุฅูุฐูŽุง ู„ูŽู‚ููˆุง ุงู„ูŽู‘ุฐููŠู†ูŽ ุขู…ูŽู†ููˆุง ู‚ูŽุงู„ููˆุง ุขู…ูŽู†ูŽู‘ุง
02:01When they are in the company of believers
02:03They would say that they have believed
02:04ูˆูŽุฅูุฐูŽุง ุฎูŽู„ูŽูˆู’ุง ุฅูู„ูŽู‰ูฐ ุดูŽูŠูŽุงุทููŠู†ูู‡ูู…ู’ ู‚ูŽุงู„ููˆุง ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ุง ู…ูŽุนูŽูƒูู…ู’ ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ู…ูŽุง ู†ูŽุญู’ู…ู ู…ูุณู’ุชูŽู‡ู’ุฒูุฆููˆู†ูŽ
02:09When they're in the company of their devils
02:11Their shayateen
02:12They say we're with you, we're just joking
02:14So now you've got we believe and we're joking
02:18Which in the English language are both verbs
02:21Interestingly enough in the Arabic though
02:23We believe is said as ุขู…ูŽู†ูŽู‘
02:26Which is a verb
02:27Now remember verbs are temporary
02:28And joking is ู…ูุณู’ุชูŽู‡ู’ุฒูุฆููˆู†ูŽ
02:31Which is a noun
02:32Like you wouldn't see that in translation
02:34It'll just say joking
02:34And you'll think it's a verb
02:36But it's a noun
02:36Now what does that imply?
02:38The rhetorical implication thus is
02:40That these hypocrites
02:41Their long term permanent allegiances
02:44Lie with those who they speak in the long term sense
02:48Meaning they're devils
02:50Yes they try to have loyalties on both sides
02:53But they're long loyalties
02:54And their constancy is with the shayateen
02:57With the devils
02:57SubhanAllah
02:58And that's how Allah exposes where they lean
03:00More
03:01Now the second case
03:03This is about declaring Allah's perfection
03:06Doing tasbih
03:07As most Muslims know it as doing tasbih
03:09We can't always do tasbih
03:11Tasbih is not something that I can do constantly
03:14After we do it after salah
03:15We do it when we're remembering Allah etc
03:17Which is why it's understandable that in the Quran
03:20When tasbih
03:21Declaring Allah's perfection
03:22Is talked about
03:23It is talked about as a verb
03:24Allah did not expect us to be
03:27ู…ูุณูŽุจูู‘ุนููŠู†
03:28People who do the declaration of Allah's perfection constantly
03:32It's impossible for us
03:33Right
03:33Which is why even Allah says
03:35The entire heavens and the earth
03:37Declare Allah's perfection
03:39And He uses a verb
03:40Because we're included in it
03:42Shaytan
03:42Or the jinns are included in it
03:44Even if not Shaytan
03:44The jinns are included
03:45And we don't do declaring of Allah's perfection
03:48Constantly
03:49Okay
03:49Now
03:50There are two exceptions to that
03:52The first exception is the prophet Yunus
03:54And the second exception is the angels
03:57Talked about in the Quran
03:57Both in the 37th surah
03:59Safat
04:00Allah talks about when Yunus
04:03Was in the belly of the whale
04:05The biblical name Jonah
04:06Right
04:06When he was in the belly of the whale
04:07And Allah says
04:08ููŽู„ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽุง ุฃูŽู†ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูƒูŽุงู†ูŽ ู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ู’ู…ูุณูŽุจูู‘ุญููŠู†ูŽ
04:11Had it not been the case
04:12That he was from those
04:14Who constantly declared perfection
04:17You know
04:19He would have remained in the belly of the whale
04:20Now
04:21How do I know
04:22He constantly declared perfection
04:24Because unlike everywhere else in the Quran
04:26Here Allah decided to use a noun
04:28The permanence
04:29Is articulated
04:30It's awesome
04:30To suggest he has nothing else to think about
04:33When he's in the belly of the whale
04:34As long as he's there
04:35He's just
04:36How perfect you are
04:37How perfect you are
04:38How perfect you are
04:39How perfect you are
04:39Constantly
04:40Constantly
04:41Constantly
04:41Declaring Allah's perfection
04:43SubhanAllah
04:44This also gives you an idea
04:46Of how the standards for prophets
04:47Are so much higher than for
04:49Everybody else
04:50Like when a Muslim gets in trouble
04:51They ask Allah for a little bit of forgiveness
04:52Allah pulls them out of trouble
04:53But when prophets
04:55Who Allah expects so much more from
04:56If they ever make a mistake
04:58Then the expectations from them
05:00Are way way way higher
05:01It makes us appreciate the status
05:03Of those prophets
05:03Of course the other example
05:05Also in Surah As-Safat
05:06Is the angels
05:07ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ุง ู„ูŽู†ูŽุญู’ู†ู ุงู„ู’ู…ูุณูŽุจูู‘ุญููˆู†ูŽ
05:09We are the ones who declare perfection
05:10That's how it's translated
05:11Except the
05:12Who declare perfection
05:14Is a noun
05:15ู…ูุณูŽุจูู‘ุญููˆู†ูŽ
05:16In the Arabic
05:17Suggesting the angels
05:18Are constantly
05:19Constantly
05:20Engaged in the declaration
05:21Of Allah's perfection
05:22Here's the last one
05:24And this is the one that
05:25I think is
05:25The one that baffles me
05:27And I hope I'm able to
05:28Articulate it clearly to you
05:29Okay
05:29I want you to think about punishment
05:31And forgiveness
05:32Seeking forgiveness
05:33And keep those two things in mind
05:35As you read this ayah
05:36I'll give you the Arabic
05:37And then the English in easy language

05:52That he will not destroy Quraysh
05:53So long as he is among them

05:59So long as they are asking for forgiveness

06:03I'll reiterate those two parts
06:04Allah will not destroy them until
06:06So long as you're among them

06:13Now
06:14The thing that these two parts have in common
06:17Is Allah would not destroy
06:18Except in the Arabic
06:20The first case of Allah would not destroy
06:22Is mentioned as a verb
06:24And in the second case
06:26Allah would not destroy
06:27Is mentioned as a noun
06:28And what does that mean?
06:30That means Allah not destroying
06:32In the first case
06:33Is a temporary clause
06:34Because verbs by definition
06:36Are temporary
06:37It's not a constant thing
06:39Allah will never ever ever destroy them
06:40It's not like that
06:41Allah will not destroy them
06:42Allah will not be one to destroy them
06:43So long as
06:45You're in their company
06:46Now the Prophet
06:47Being in their company
06:49Is that a permanent thing
06:49Or a temporary thing?
06:51It's temporary
06:51So it coincides with
06:53Look this clause isn't permanent
06:55It is temporary
06:56So it coincides with the temporary
06:58Disclaimer

06:59What about the second case?
07:00He says
07:01Allah will never ever ever destroy them
07:05That actually is a permanent clause
07:08He didn't say
07:09Temporarily
07:10For now I won't destroy them

07:14How do we know that?
07:15The noun is being used

07:18Okay so what do they have to do
07:20To be permanently saved
07:22From Allah's destruction?

07:26So long as they are asking for forgiveness
07:29Now here's the kicker
07:30Them asking for forgiveness
07:32Could have been said as a noun
07:33And could have been said as a verb
07:35If you said it as a noun
07:37You would have said
07:38ูˆูŽู‡ูู…ู’ ู…ูุณู’ุชูŽุบู’ููุฑููˆู†ูŽ
07:39If you said it as a verb
07:41Which Allah did
07:41ูˆูŽู‡ูู…ู’ ูŠูŽุณู’ุชูŽุบู’ููุฑููˆู†ูŽ
07:43What does that mean?
07:44That means they're not always asking for forgiveness
07:46So long as once in a while
07:48They ask for forgiveness
07:49And they're not constantly begging for forgiveness
07:51I won't destroy them
07:52Had that been a noun
07:55The condition from Allah would have been
07:57Unless you are in the constant engagement
08:00Of begging me for forgiveness
08:01I'm gonna destroy you
08:03But he said
08:04At least give me some istighfar
08:06There's a mercy of Allah
08:08That he used a verb here

08:52So long as they do some seeking for forgiveness

08:55But doing wrong in this ayah is a noun

09:00Were constantly immersed in wrong
09:03I wouldn't destroy them
09:05I didn't just destroy nations when they did wrong
09:08I destroyed nations when they demonstrated
09:10A constant pursuit of the wrong
