Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
00:14
Welcome back to Amazed by the Qur'an
00:15
A series in which I try to share with you what I find amazing about the Qur'an
00:19
Today I want to start this conversation briefly with a description of the difference between nouns and verbs
00:24
That will help you appreciate the ayat that I want to talk about
00:27
So by definition nouns like apple, tree, happiness, etc
00:32
Nouns don't have a tense, they're not past or present or future
00:35
They're timeless in that sense
00:37
So rhetorically speaking a noun is considered timeless
00:40
Verbs on the other hand have tense, past tense or present tense or future tense
00:44
Even the imperative is in the present tense in the sense
00:46
So tenses or verbs are temporary because they are caged in time
00:53
So nouns are timeless and verbs are caged in time
00:56
Now what happens in the Arabic language interestingly is sometimes when you're talking about an act
01:02
You can actually use a noun or a verb
01:05
And when you translate that into the English language
01:08
When you translate it in the Qur'an for example
01:10
An average translation
01:11
We don't have that luxury in English
01:14
So we always translate it as a verb
01:16
So you don't get to see that sometimes what we're thinking is a verb
01:20
Was actually used as a noun in the Qur'an
01:23
Because they're just exactly the same way that would be translated
01:26
So for instance not in the Qur'an but in regular Arabic
01:29
ุฃุฌูุณู, I'm sitting
01:30
ุฃูุง ุฌุงูุณ, I'm sitting
01:32
While ุฃุฌูุณู is a verb and ุฌุงูุณ is a noun
01:36
So you wouldn't tell, you'd translate the same way I'm sitting
01:38
Now let's appreciate the rhetorical difference as is used in the Qur'an
01:44
It's very subtle
01:45
So I'll give you three examples of that in order of complexity
01:48
The first example is about hypocrites talked about in Surah Al-Baqarah
01:53
And Allah says that when they come to believers
01:57
They say that they believe
01:59
ููุฅูุฐูุง ูููููุง ุงูููุฐูููู ุขู ููููุง ููุงูููุง ุขู ููููุง
02:01
When they are in the company of believers
02:03
They would say that they have believed
02:04
ููุฅูุฐูุง ุฎูููููุง ุฅูููููฐ ุดูููุงุทููููููู ู ููุงูููุง ุฅููููุง ู ูุนูููู ู ุฅููููู ูุง ููุญูู ู ู ูุณูุชูููุฒูุฆูููู
02:09
When they're in the company of their devils
02:11
Their shayateen
02:12
They say we're with you, we're just joking
02:14
So now you've got we believe and we're joking
02:18
Which in the English language are both verbs
02:21
Interestingly enough in the Arabic though
02:23
We believe is said as ุขู ูููู
02:26
Which is a verb
02:27
Now remember verbs are temporary
02:28
And joking is ู ูุณูุชูููุฒูุฆูููู
02:31
Which is a noun
02:32
Like you wouldn't see that in translation
02:34
It'll just say joking
02:34
And you'll think it's a verb
02:36
But it's a noun
02:36
Now what does that imply?
02:38
The rhetorical implication thus is
02:40
That these hypocrites
02:41
Their long term permanent allegiances
02:44
Lie with those who they speak in the long term sense
02:48
Meaning they're devils
02:50
Yes they try to have loyalties on both sides
02:53
But they're long loyalties
02:54
And their constancy is with the shayateen
02:57
With the devils
02:57
SubhanAllah
02:58
And that's how Allah exposes where they lean
03:00
More
03:01
Now the second case
03:03
This is about declaring Allah's perfection
03:06
Doing tasbih
03:07
As most Muslims know it as doing tasbih
03:09
We can't always do tasbih
03:11
Tasbih is not something that I can do constantly
03:14
After we do it after salah
03:15
We do it when we're remembering Allah etc
03:17
Which is why it's understandable that in the Quran
03:20
When tasbih
03:21
Declaring Allah's perfection
03:22
Is talked about
03:23
It is talked about as a verb
03:24
Allah did not expect us to be
03:27
ู ูุณูุจููุนููู
03:28
People who do the declaration of Allah's perfection constantly
03:32
It's impossible for us
03:33
Right
03:33
Which is why even Allah says
03:35
The entire heavens and the earth
03:37
Declare Allah's perfection
03:39
And He uses a verb
03:40
Because we're included in it
03:42
Shaytan
03:42
Or the jinns are included in it
03:44
Even if not Shaytan
03:44
The jinns are included
03:45
And we don't do declaring of Allah's perfection
03:48
Constantly
03:49
Okay
03:49
Now
03:50
There are two exceptions to that
03:52
The first exception is the prophet Yunus
03:54
And the second exception is the angels
03:57
Talked about in the Quran
03:57
Both in the 37th surah
03:59
Safat
04:00
Allah talks about when Yunus
04:03
Was in the belly of the whale
04:05
The biblical name Jonah
04:06
Right
04:06
When he was in the belly of the whale
04:07
And Allah says
04:08
ููููููููุง ุฃูููููู ููุงูู ู ููู ุงููู ูุณูุจููุญูููู
04:11
Had it not been the case
04:12
That he was from those
04:14
Who constantly declared perfection
04:17
You know
04:19
He would have remained in the belly of the whale
04:20
Now
04:21
How do I know
04:22
He constantly declared perfection
04:24
Because unlike everywhere else in the Quran
04:26
Here Allah decided to use a noun
04:28
The permanence
04:29
Is articulated
04:30
It's awesome
04:30
To suggest he has nothing else to think about
04:33
When he's in the belly of the whale
04:34
As long as he's there
04:35
He's just
04:36
How perfect you are
04:37
How perfect you are
04:38
How perfect you are
04:39
How perfect you are
04:39
Constantly
04:40
Constantly
04:41
Constantly
04:41
Declaring Allah's perfection
04:43
SubhanAllah
04:44
This also gives you an idea
04:46
Of how the standards for prophets
04:47
Are so much higher than for
04:49
Everybody else
04:50
Like when a Muslim gets in trouble
04:51
They ask Allah for a little bit of forgiveness
04:52
Allah pulls them out of trouble
04:53
But when prophets
04:55
Who Allah expects so much more from
04:56
If they ever make a mistake
04:58
Then the expectations from them
05:00
Are way way way higher
05:01
It makes us appreciate the status
05:03
Of those prophets
05:03
Of course the other example
05:05
Also in Surah As-Safat
05:06
Is the angels
05:07
ุฅููููุง ููููุญููู ุงููู ูุณูุจููุญูููู
05:09
We are the ones who declare perfection
05:10
That's how it's translated
05:11
Except the
05:12
Who declare perfection
05:14
Is a noun
05:15
ู ูุณูุจููุญูููู
05:16
In the Arabic
05:17
Suggesting the angels
05:18
Are constantly
05:19
Constantly
05:20
Engaged in the declaration
05:21
Of Allah's perfection
05:22
Here's the last one
05:24
And this is the one that
05:25
I think is
05:25
The one that baffles me
05:27
And I hope I'm able to
05:28
Articulate it clearly to you
05:29
Okay
05:29
I want you to think about punishment
05:31
And forgiveness
05:32
Seeking forgiveness
05:33
And keep those two things in mind
05:35
As you read this ayah
05:36
I'll give you the Arabic
05:37
And then the English in easy language
05:39
ููู ูุง ููุงูู ุงูููููู ููููุนูุฐููุจูููู ู ููุฃูููุชู ูููููู ู
05:42
ููู ูุง ููุงูู ุงูููููู ู ูุนูุฐููุจูููู ู ููููู ู ููุณูุชูุบูููุฑูููู
05:45
Allah would not be one
05:47
To punish them
05:48
So long as you're in their company
05:50
The Prophet is being told
05:52
That he will not destroy Quraysh
05:53
So long as he is among them
05:55
Part one
05:55
Part two
05:56
Allah would never destroy them
05:58
Allah would not be one to punish them
05:59
So long as they are asking for forgiveness
06:01
Now once again
06:03
I'll reiterate those two parts
06:04
Allah will not destroy them until
06:06
So long as you're among them
06:08
And Allah will not destroy them
06:10
So long as they're asking for forgiveness
06:12
Those are the two parts
06:13
Now
06:14
The thing that these two parts have in common
06:17
Is Allah would not destroy
06:18
Except in the Arabic
06:20
The first case of Allah would not destroy
06:22
Is mentioned as a verb
06:24
And in the second case
06:26
Allah would not destroy
06:27
Is mentioned as a noun
06:28
And what does that mean?
06:30
That means Allah not destroying
06:32
In the first case
06:33
Is a temporary clause
06:34
Because verbs by definition
06:36
Are temporary
06:37
It's not a constant thing
06:39
Allah will never ever ever destroy them
06:40
It's not like that
06:41
Allah will not destroy them
06:42
Allah will not be one to destroy them
06:43
So long as
06:45
You're in their company
06:46
Now the Prophet
06:47
Being in their company
06:49
Is that a permanent thing
06:49
Or a temporary thing?
06:51
It's temporary
06:51
So it coincides with
06:53
Look this clause isn't permanent
06:55
It is temporary
06:56
So it coincides with the temporary
06:58
Disclaimer
06:58
Now
06:59
What about the second case?
07:00
He says
07:01
Allah will never ever ever destroy them
07:05
That actually is a permanent clause
07:08
He didn't say
07:09
Temporarily
07:10
For now I won't destroy them
07:12
No, no, no
07:12
He will never ever destroy them
07:14
How do we know that?
07:15
The noun is being used
07:16
ููู ูุง ููุงูู ุงูููููู ู ูุนูุฐููุจูููู ู
07:18
Okay so what do they have to do
07:20
To be permanently saved
07:22
From Allah's destruction?
07:25
He says
07:25
ููููู ู ููุณูุชูุบูููุฑูููู
07:26
So long as they are asking for forgiveness
07:29
Now here's the kicker
07:30
Them asking for forgiveness
07:32
Could have been said as a noun
07:33
And could have been said as a verb
07:35
If you said it as a noun
07:37
You would have said
07:38
ููููู ู ู ูุณูุชูุบูููุฑูููู
07:39
If you said it as a verb
07:41
Which Allah did
07:41
ููููู ู ููุณูุชูุบูููุฑูููู
07:43
What does that mean?
07:44
That means they're not always asking for forgiveness
07:46
So long as once in a while
07:48
They ask for forgiveness
07:49
And they're not constantly begging for forgiveness
07:51
I won't destroy them
07:52
Had that been a noun
07:55
The condition from Allah would have been
07:57
Unless you are in the constant engagement
08:00
Of begging me for forgiveness
08:01
I'm gonna destroy you
08:03
But he said
08:04
At least give me some istighfar
08:06
There's a mercy of Allah
08:08
That he used a verb here
08:09
ููููู ู ููุณูุชูุบูููุฑูููู
08:10
Look at the flip side
08:12
ููู ูุง ูููููุง ู ููููููู ุงููููุฑูุงุกู
08:14
ุฅููููุง ููุฃูููููููุง ุธูุงููู ูููู
08:15
So awesome
08:15
Allah talks about history
08:17
This was about what he would never do in the future
08:18
So we'll wrap it up with history
08:20
Allah has destroyed towns
08:22
We know that
08:23
How does he describe it?
08:25
We would never ever ever destroy towns
08:27
ููู ูุง ูููููุง ู ููููููู ุงููููุฑูุงุกู
08:29
We would never ever ever destroy towns
08:31
ู ููููููู ุงููููุฑูุงุกู
08:32
Destroyers of towns
08:34
That's a noun
08:34
We've never done it ever ever
08:36
Until what?
08:38
ุฅููููุง ููุฃูููููููุง ุธูุงููู ูููู
08:39
Accept that its people do wrong
08:42
Accept that its people do wrong
08:44
Now the doing wrong
08:46
In this ayah is actually a noun
08:48
Remember seeking forgiveness was a verb
08:50
So it's temporary
08:52
So long as they do some seeking for forgiveness
08:54
They're saved
08:55
But doing wrong in this ayah is a noun
08:58
Which means
08:59
Until its people
09:00
Were constantly immersed in wrong
09:03
I wouldn't destroy them
09:05
I didn't just destroy nations when they did wrong
09:08
I destroyed nations when they demonstrated
09:10
A constant pursuit of the wrong
09:13
ุฅููููุง ููุฃูููููููุง ุธูุงููู ูููู
09:14
Not ูุธูู ูู
09:15
ุธูุงููู ูููู
09:16
Constant pursuit of wrong
09:17
So something as small as the difference between nouns and verbs
09:20
Wallahi I've given you like three samplers from this
09:23
There are literally thousands and thousands of examples of this in the Quran
09:27
This subject alone leaves me amazed
09:30
I hope you guys enjoyed this series
