00:00Grandmothers are safe, sweet, loving, the ones you trust most.
00:11Lois Reese, Midwestern grandmother to five kids, seemed no different.
00:17But what if this granny wasn't trustworthy at all?
00:20What if behind that smile was not just a con artist, but a killer?
00:26A 911 call came in to the Lee County Sheriff's Office from Marina Village at Snug Harbor.
00:34An innocent woman is found murdered while on vacation in Florida.
00:39The girl I know there said, my God, Barb, didn't you know Pam was murdered?
00:43It just made me sick.
00:45The victim is captured on camera with a suspect that looks just like her.
00:50It showed her with like a female companion or a female friend.
00:54And they're walking through the parking lot together, going up the elevator, walking down the hallway into the unit together.
01:01And from that point forward, I never saw the victim on surveillance footage again.
01:10I never would have thought that this is who my suspect was in this case.
01:15We believe that she was on the run.
01:17Our grandmas are the people that you can go to and be comforted when bad things happen.
01:24She was that for her grandchildren.
01:27Her grandchildren and my children were the same age and we took them everywhere together.
01:31You would never in a million years think that she could commit a crime like that.
01:35My biggest fear was, I don't want her to do this again.
01:38I don't want her to do this again.
02:08The county investigators rushed to the condo complex to respond to the incident.
02:15Initially, when I made entrance into the unit, I did smell something that was foul.
02:20I also noticed that the air in the unit was turned down, like it was cold in there.
02:26I noticed then at the door that separates the bedroom from the master bathroom was closed.
02:33But at the base of the door, there appeared to be towels jammed at the bottom of it.
02:38That may be to keep a smell in or out or to muffle the sound of something.
02:42And once we go in, we find that that's where the body was.
02:46The decedent was on the floor, feet towards the door.
02:56A towel was draped over the decedent's arms and head area.
03:01We were unable to see any wounds on her.
03:03It was hard to see if there was any kind of struggle.
03:06I was still up in the air with it.
03:07When the medical examiner arrives, they start lifting the sheets and towels off.
03:14You could tell that it was a female.
03:17There is a pillow near the body with what appears to be a gunshot hole through it.
03:22There's some soot on the outside of it.
03:24That was possibly used to muffle the sound of a gun being shot at close range.
03:29The female was older, I would say 60s.
03:34We saw a probable bullet wound.
03:38We then realized that it turned into a full-blown homicide that she had been killed.
03:45At that point, we did not locate a weapon.
03:49There was no indication of a struggle.
03:51There was no defensive marks, as far as we could tell, on the decedent.
03:55It looked as if she had just been taken by surprise.
03:59Marina Village at Snug Harbor is the apartment and condo complex.
04:04It's used as timeshare, so it does kind of have a transient occupancy a little bit.
04:10We got the name from the complainant of,
04:14hey, this lady is the one who checked in.
04:16We checked her driver's license.
04:18She had checked in as Pamela Hutchinson.
04:21But no one felt comfortable enough at that time, at least,
04:24to make a positive identification
04:26because of the decom to the face and the bloating and everything.
04:29I knew I had another female.
04:32She was supposedly there by herself.
04:35I'm thinking to myself, maybe someone followed her home,
04:38tried to rob her.
04:39It turned bad.
04:39I just didn't know at that point.
04:41With their investigation stretching through the night,
04:46detectives hope an autopsy can give them some new information.
04:50They decide to wait to tell the family
04:53until they can be sure that the body is Pam Hutchinson.
04:57It was a small caliber round that killed our victim, possibly a .22 caliber.
05:04We were able to identify her through dental records.
05:08The victim in the bathroom was identified as Pamela Hutchinson.
05:11So we start making phone calls to next of kin.
05:15I was at a local bar restaurant when Pam's cousin-in-law called me
05:29to inform me that Pam had been murdered.
05:32I was devastated.
05:35I mean, you hear about things like that happening every day to somebody else,
05:42but you don't think that can ever happen to somebody you know.
05:46I live in Bradenton, Florida, and I met Pam Hutchinson in late 2015.
05:59She was somebody that would strike up a conversation with anybody.
06:05Pam kind of had that southern hospitality.
06:09I felt like he knew her all my life.
06:11She was raised down south, and her family used to have a peanut stand
06:19where they'd sell peanuts along the road.
06:22She was from Virginia Beach.
06:25Her father died when she was real young,
06:27but she was really close to her mother.
06:30Then the mother passed away not too long
06:33before she came down here seeking a new life
06:36after she broke up with her husband.
06:39While I was searching for a place to purchase,
06:43I ran into Pam, and she said,
06:46Why don't you move in with me for a while?
06:48From the start, we just clicked.
06:50We liked the same things.
06:51We liked to bake.
06:52We both believed in God.
06:54We both jabbered a lot.
06:58The detectives reach out to Pam's family and friends
07:02to pick up the details about Pam's trip to Fort Myers Beach.
07:07So I was living with Pam at the time she decided
07:11that she was going to go to Sanibel Island at Fort Myers Beach.
07:15She had come down to the area to be with a friend
07:19whose husband had passed,
07:20and they were going to scatter his ashes on Sanibel Island,
07:23which is an island in the area.
07:27We did text when she arrived at Fort Myers Beach.
07:30Yeah, I made it.
07:30Okay, good, go.
07:32Have a good time.
07:33Just relax.
07:36Life is short.
07:38And then I didn't hear from her after that.
07:47I owned a timeshare at Marina Village for many years.
07:51So I called Marina Village at Snug Harbor,
07:54and I said, what's going on?
07:57The girl I know there said, my God, Barb,
07:59didn't you know Pam was murdered?
08:02And I'm just like, what?
08:06It just made me sick.
08:08I never recalled Pam having any enemies
08:16that would ever consider doing her harm.
08:21She was actually what I considered
08:24my best friend at the time.
08:27It's still hard to get over, you know?
08:31Word of Pam's death gets around fast,
08:42but her poor family doesn't have any idea
08:44who might have done it.
08:46The Fort Myers detectives keep digging,
08:48hoping they can find anything
08:50that'll point to who's behind this awful crime.
08:54The Lee County Sheriff's Office knew that
08:56Pam had come down on vacation
08:57to help a friend of hers
08:59whose husband had just died shortly before.
09:03At that point,
09:04they didn't really have a suspect.
09:06They started to look at the surveillance videos
09:09to try and see who maybe
09:11had been with Pamela at that point.
09:13When we were collecting all the evidence
09:15in the unit,
09:16we found a receipt for the Smokin' Oyster Brewery.
09:19It had a date and time stamp on it.
09:22We sent detectives to the restaurant,
09:24and they collected the video for that time stamp.
09:28We also made contact with the complainant
09:30from Marina Village at Snug Harbor
09:32and asked to review her surveillance footage.
09:38We were starting to go back
09:40to the day that our victim arrived,
09:42and watching her come in,
09:44we see what kind of car she was driving,
09:46a white Acura four-door vehicle.
09:53They were made it by the bell.
09:54The footage shows that Pam is alone
10:09at the condo from April 3rd to April 5th.
10:12But what about after that?
10:15Detectives decide to take a gander
10:17at the footage they collected
10:19from April 6th
10:20at the Smokin' Oyster Brewery.
10:23And that's where we see footage
10:25of our victim,
10:27but it also showed her
10:28with, like, a female companion
10:30or a female friend.
10:32The female was very talkative,
10:34very jovial,
10:35like, easy to get along with.
10:37She was talking to everybody
10:39that got close to her.
10:41So after finishing their meal
10:43at Smokin' Oyster Brewery,
10:45they both left the area together.
10:47So did Pam go back
10:50to her condo
10:51with her new friend?
10:53The investigators checked the footage
10:55from the complex
10:56to find out.
10:57About an hour after
10:59both of them were seen
11:01walking to the room together,
11:05they're walking
11:06through the parking lot together,
11:07going up the elevator,
11:08walking down the hallway
11:09into the unit together.
11:11A short time later,
11:15the female,
11:16which she entered with,
11:17came out kind of looking distraught.
11:20So it was concerning
11:22at that point.
11:23It looked as if
11:24she was almost talking to herself.
11:26She was walking around,
11:27she was leaning over.
11:29Again, it looked like
11:29she was upset emotionally.
11:32And from that point forward,
11:33I never saw the victim
11:35on surveillance footage again.
11:38At that point,
11:39then we knew
11:39who we were looking for.
11:41A white female,
11:42I would guesstimate
11:43between 50, 60 years of age.
11:45I was surprised.
11:47I'm thinking,
11:48wow, this reminds me
11:50of my grandma.
11:54Her facade
11:55was probably
11:56of an innocent lady.
11:58You can tell
11:59something was changing in her.
12:01She had a love
12:02for the casinos,
12:04a love for gambling.
12:05It has become
12:06this odd crime spree
12:09of the most
12:10unassuming-looking grandmother.
12:13I was concerned
12:14about her
12:15trying to go to Mexico.
12:17I was like,
12:17this is a problem.
12:18when poor Pam Hutchinson
12:35is discovered
12:36shot to death
12:37in her Fort Myers rental,
12:39investigators sift
12:40through hours
12:40and hours of footage
12:42looking for one
12:43unusual suspect
12:44in particular.
12:45I never would have thought
12:47that this is who
12:48my suspect was
12:48in this case.
12:50She had blonde hair.
12:52She wasn't very tall,
12:53maybe 5'5", 5'6".
12:55And those, again,
12:56are characteristics
12:57that were somewhat
12:58similar to our victim.
13:00At that point,
13:02I wasn't sure
13:02if it was a friend,
13:04but to me,
13:05it appeared as if
13:06she had just met
13:07this person.
13:09It was my belief
13:10that the homicide
13:11probably had occurred
13:13on April 5th,
13:14just before
13:15we saw the suspect
13:16exit the room
13:18and appear distraught.
13:21On surveillance footage,
13:23on April 6th, 2018,
13:25I no longer see
13:26our victim coming
13:27and going.
13:27I only see
13:28our suspect
13:28coming and going
13:29from the victim's room.
13:31It appeared
13:32as if she took
13:33a lot of evidence
13:34from the unit itself.
13:36She was also
13:37adorning herself
13:38in the victim's clothing,
13:40specifically a hat,
13:41I remember,
13:42and sunglasses.
13:43And it was almost
13:44as if she was
13:44assuming her identity.
13:48And we see her
13:50driving away
13:51in our victim's car
13:51at this point.
13:54Once we saw her leave
13:56with the victim's vehicle,
13:57and we no longer
13:59had her on any
13:59surveillance footage,
14:01we believed that
14:02she was on the run.
14:03She had a head start
14:04from us.
14:06From the time
14:07we last saw
14:07the suspect
14:08on surveillance
14:09to the time
14:10of the 911 call,
14:12it was about four days.
14:14We've got to figure out
14:15where she's at.
14:16We start looking
14:17for our victim's car.
14:19We're putting
14:20license plates
14:21into our license plate
14:23reader system,
14:24flagging them
14:25as a homicide suspect.
14:26At that point,
14:28we knew of no witnesses.
14:30We did an extensive
14:31canvas of everyone
14:32that was in the building.
14:34Some had already
14:35come and gone.
14:35Again, this is spring break.
14:36But there's no obvious way
14:43that Pam
14:44and the gray-haired
14:45mystery lady
14:46would know each other.
14:47The only clue
14:48the guys have to work with
14:50are the two cars
14:51caught on tape
14:52at the crime scene,
14:53Pam's Acura
14:54and the other lady's
14:56Escalade.
14:57They check recent
14:58police reports
14:59to see if anything
15:00comes up.
15:01Before we found the body,
15:03our units on the beach
15:04were provided information
15:06to be on the lookout
15:07for Lois Reese
15:08from Minnesota
15:09because they believed
15:11that she had been
15:11in the area
15:12in her white Escalade.
15:14Lois Reese
15:15had a warrant
15:16for her arrest
15:17out of Blooming Prairie,
15:18Minnesota
15:19in reference
15:19to a fraud case.
15:21Now there's
15:22an aha moment.
15:24Their suspect
15:24was in a white Escalade too.
15:26Could it be the same one
15:28Lois Reese
15:29was driving?
15:29It was just,
15:32let me just take a chance.
15:34Let me just see.
15:36I called the local
15:37jurisdiction up in Minnesota
15:38but this one just kind of
15:40took me by surprise.
15:42They had a murder investigation
15:44on going there.
15:46Lois Reese
15:47was a person of interest
15:48at the time.
15:49They didn't have charges
15:50on her for murder
15:51but her husband,
15:52David Reese,
15:53was killed.
15:53So they were looking for her.
15:56The Dodge County Sheriff's Office
15:57had mentioned
15:57that they had secured
15:58an arrest warrant
15:59for her
16:00because she withdrew
16:01approximately $11,000
16:03from David Reese's
16:04bank account
16:05after she had fled the area.
16:07Even though the police
16:09in Minnesota
16:09figured that Lois Reese
16:11had flipped
16:11from kindly grandmother
16:13to husband killer,
16:14they could only get
16:15a warrant
16:16for the money
16:16she stole
16:17from his account.
16:19I asked them
16:20for a photo
16:20of the person of interest
16:22that they had up
16:23in Minnesota
16:23and I took that photo,
16:25I printed it off
16:26and as I'm watching
16:27the surveillance footage,
16:28I put it right up
16:29next to the screen
16:30and I paused it
16:31and I said,
16:33that's her.
16:36I spoke specifically
16:37and directly
16:38with the detectives
16:39involved
16:39with the murder
16:40investigation
16:41and the grand theft
16:42investigation
16:42and they relayed
16:44the scene
16:45that they encountered
16:46in that area.
16:47They told me
16:48they received a call
16:49to do a welfare check
16:50on David Reese.
16:51Dave's employees
17:01had not seen him
17:02for almost two weeks
17:04and Lois had been
17:05telling them
17:06that he was ill.
17:08On the 22nd,
17:10they saw Lois
17:11driving out
17:12in Dave's
17:14white Escalade.
17:16The employees said,
17:17something's up.
17:18So they called
17:20the local police
17:21to come and do
17:22a welfare check.
17:25Blooming Prairie police
17:27went to the house,
17:28knocked,
17:29couldn't get anybody,
17:30walked around,
17:31found an open window
17:32in the back,
17:32which is unusual
17:33because it's March
17:34in Minnesota.
17:36And they saw a body
17:38through the window
17:40that was open.
17:40They were able
17:43to make entry,
17:44get inside the house,
17:46made their way
17:47to the master bath
17:48and the door was closed,
17:50things up against the door.
17:53They found
17:54who they believed
17:55to be David Reese
17:56in the bathroom.
17:59It did not look
18:00like the body had moved.
18:01It looked like
18:02Dave laid where he fell
18:04after he got shot twice,
18:06again covered
18:07with a towel.
18:08According to the
18:10Dodge County Sheriff's Office,
18:12David had been dead
18:12for at least a few days.
18:15And at that point,
18:16Lois was nowhere
18:17to be found.
18:22It sounded very similar
18:23to what I had found
18:25in the unit down here.
18:27The victim up in Minnesota
18:29was killed in the bathroom.
18:30It appeared to be
18:31a small caliber round.
18:33And then also a towel
18:34was draped over
18:35the decedent up in Minnesota,
18:37same as down here.
18:39The bathroom window
18:40was open
18:41to again let in cold air,
18:43again similar to Lois
18:44dropping the air
18:45in the unit.
18:46She turned the air down,
18:49tried to keep the smell out.
18:51I was shocked.
18:52I would have never
18:52just thought
18:53walking down the street,
18:55oh, that lady's responsible
18:56for the deaths
18:56of two people.
18:58Everything we put out
18:59at that point
19:00was she's wanted
19:01and she's considered
19:02armed and dangerous.
19:03We needed to find her
19:06as soon as possible
19:07because my biggest fear
19:08was I don't want her
19:09to do this again.
19:10Investigators in Florida
19:26find out that their suspect,
19:27Lois Reese,
19:28likely shot her poor husband
19:30in Minnesota
19:31two weeks before
19:33she did the same thing
19:34to Pam Hutchinson.
19:35They put the word out
19:37all over the state
19:38to be on the lookout
19:38for Lois
19:39and then pry into her past
19:42to see if they can figure out
19:43why she did it.
19:47Lois and Dave
19:48moved to Blooming Prairie
19:50about 2005 or 6,
19:52somewhere in there.
19:54Dave and Lois
19:55were really a friendly couple.
19:56Everybody loved
19:57to hang out with them
19:58and laugh with them.
19:59Lois was born and raised
20:02in Rochester, Minnesota.
20:05Dave also grew up
20:06in Rochester.
20:08Lois dropped out
20:09of high school
20:09as a junior
20:10and was already dating Dave.
20:13They got married
20:13and had three children
20:16very quickly.
20:18Lois, she just had
20:20this instant draw.
20:22She was just super fun,
20:24very sweet,
20:26great laugh,
20:27and just makes you feel
20:28very comfortable.
20:30Lois, for many years,
20:32while her children were young,
20:33especially,
20:34had a daycare in her home.
20:36If you went to Lois' daycare,
20:39you were privileged.
20:40Like, she,
20:41everybody wanted Lois
20:42to watch her kids.
20:43She was phenomenal.
20:45She was a good mom
20:47and a good grandmother
20:48and did the things
20:50that good moms
20:51and grandmas
20:51are supposed to do.
20:54Our grandmas are the people
20:55that you can go to
20:57and be comforted
20:59when bad things happen.
21:01Lois was bad
21:02for her grandchildren.
21:04Her grandchildren
21:05and my children
21:06were the same age
21:07and we took them
21:08everywhere together,
21:09bringing them to, like,
21:11the zoo and the beach
21:13and just doing
21:13lots of fun stuff.
21:15She's just, like,
21:16the sweetest little grandma.
21:17Dave was a jolly,
21:22fun guy.
21:24If you were in a bad mood,
21:25sit by Dave
21:26because he'd have you
21:27laughing in a minute.
21:28He had this infectious,
21:30deep laugh.
21:31Always told jokes,
21:32loved to talk about fishing.
21:34That was his favorite
21:35thing to do.
21:37Dave ran a waxworm business,
21:40so he actually grew waxworms
21:42from nothing
21:44and they would sell them
21:45at fisheries,
21:47bait shops,
21:47stuff like that.
21:50Lois seemed very happy.
21:52So did Dave.
21:54Never would have guessed
21:55there was, like,
21:56deeper problems involved.
21:58I think it wasn't until
22:03later on in the years
22:04where you can tell
22:06something was changing
22:07in her.
22:08Everyone knew that
22:10Lois and Dave
22:11liked to go to the casino,
22:13especially Lois.
22:15It was something that
22:16a lot of the
22:17Blooming Prairie people
22:18their age did
22:20on the weekends.
22:22Later on,
22:23when she would call me
22:25and be like,
22:26hey, can I use you
22:27for an excuse?
22:29I'm going to the casino
22:30and I don't want Dave
22:31to know.
22:32That's when I kind of
22:34realized that maybe
22:35it was getting a little,
22:37a little too much.
22:40She had confided
22:41a couple times,
22:41just exhausted,
22:43and I said to her,
22:44I'm like,
22:45you're going to snap.
22:50I panicked
22:51because then we find out
22:52Dave's dead
22:53and Lois is nowhere
22:55to be found.
22:56She's not answering
22:57my phone calls,
22:58not texting me back.
22:59So then I'm like,
23:00oh my gosh,
23:01did something happen
23:02to her?
23:02Was she kidnapped?
23:03Was she murdered
23:05and taken away?
23:05Like, I had no idea.
23:12Two weeks later,
23:14Lois has managed
23:15to avoid Minnesota police
23:17for killing her husband
23:18and Florida police
23:20and Florida police
23:20for killing Pam.
23:22And the cops realized
23:23that she could already
23:24be days and miles
23:26ahead of them.
23:27So while they look for her,
23:28they try to figure out
23:29what she was up to
23:31right before she killed Pam.
23:33So prior to the homicide,
23:36we had learned
23:37that Lois Reese
23:38was spotted
23:39on Fort Myers Beach
23:40by Tess Coster,
23:42a part-time resident
23:43of Florida.
23:45We were part-time here
23:47and part-time in Minnesota.
23:50Tess was from
23:50Blooming Prairie,
23:51and so she was aware
23:52of the murder investigation
23:53that was happening
23:54up in that area
23:55at the time
23:56and knew about
23:58Lois Reese
23:58and what she may
23:59be wanted for.
24:07On April 2nd,
24:09I was cleaning my garage.
24:11Then I saw this
24:13pearl-colored Cadillac Escalade
24:15pull up in our driveway,
24:16and someone got out,
24:18looked at the house number,
24:19and so I stepped out
24:20of the garage and said,
24:21Can I help you?
24:23And she looked up
24:24and just shock
24:25was in her eyes,
24:26and she said,
24:26Wrong house,
24:27wrong house,
24:27and looked down like this
24:29and shook her head
24:29and went around
24:31to her Escalade
24:32and got in
24:33and drove away.
24:36Well, my heart
24:37just started pounding
24:38because here was
24:40Lois Reese
24:41in my driveway.
24:44When she saw
24:45the person
24:46who she believed
24:47to be Lois
24:48in the driveway,
24:48it scared her,
24:49and she wanted
24:50to make, you know,
24:51the sheriff's office
24:52aware down here,
24:53which she did,
24:54but unfortunately,
24:56she was able
24:57to stay hidden
24:57from us.
24:59A few days later,
25:00Lois Reese
25:01killed our victim.
25:04I'm thinking,
25:05she was after me first.
25:07She got fouled out
25:08because I saw her
25:09and called 911 on her.
25:11She had a plan in mind,
25:13but Tess interrupted that,
25:15and so instead
25:16of moving forward
25:17at that point,
25:17she just took a step back
25:19and went another way.
25:21The detectives figured
25:23that Lois switched gears
25:24and decided
25:25that someone like Pam
25:27wouldn't see her coming.
25:30Lois was clearly desperate.
25:33She was definitely
25:33looking for more money
25:35and more options.
25:37In homicides
25:39that I've worked,
25:40everything has a reason,
25:41and this reason
25:43in my mind
25:44was to assume
25:44the identity
25:45of the victim
25:46and use it
25:48for what she could.
25:50I think she targeted her
25:52because they were similar.
25:54Someone like-minded,
25:56similar characteristics,
25:57skin color,
25:58hair, age.
26:00She's already committed
26:01two murders,
26:02and she's still in the wind.
26:04We did search warrants
26:08on her cell phone.
26:09We did search warrants
26:09on the financial information
26:11for Lois,
26:12but then also
26:12for our victim as well.
26:14She had made
26:15several withdrawals
26:16from ATMs
26:17using the victim's information
26:19a couple days
26:21after the murder.
26:23We also have her on video
26:25up in the Ocala area,
26:26central Florida,
26:27checking into a hotel
26:29under the identity
26:30of our victim,
26:31wearing the same hat
26:32that our victim had
26:32in her room.
26:34However,
26:34by the time I found this,
26:36Lois had already
26:37come and gone.
26:38We know we have you.
26:40We just got to find you,
26:41and you're assuming
26:42the identity
26:43of our victim.
26:54Double-murdering granny
26:56Lois Reese
26:57has a jump
26:58on Lee County cops,
26:59so they cast
27:00a wider net
27:01across the South
27:02to see if they can
27:04catch back up.
27:06Sure enough,
27:06another clue turns up.
27:12We had tracked her
27:13to a casino
27:14in Louisiana
27:15and found out
27:16that she hit
27:17a jackpot
27:18for $1,500.
27:20She actually used
27:21her own name and ID
27:22to claim the winnings.
27:25She did have a gambling addiction,
27:26and that may very well
27:28be a good reason
27:29as to why Lois used
27:30her own information
27:32to collect the winning.
27:33She felt proud.
27:36It made me mad
27:37that she just seemed
27:39to be out there
27:40enjoying herself
27:41and just continuing
27:42to live her life,
27:43knowing that she had committed
27:45one murder in Florida
27:46and most likely
27:48another one in Minnesota.
27:51But Lois is slippery.
27:53She's long gone
27:55days before police
27:56get the alert,
27:57and they're once again
27:58left chasing her shadow.
27:59I was able to present
28:02the case
28:03to the state attorney's office
28:04and walked a warrant
28:06through for the murder,
28:08at which point
28:08then that went nationwide.
28:11We alerted everybody
28:13that we could,
28:14federal agencies,
28:15state law enforcement,
28:16local agencies,
28:18anywhere and everywhere
28:18that we think
28:19she may be going.
28:20We made them aware
28:21to be on the lookout
28:22for, one,
28:23Lois Reese herself,
28:24but then also the vehicle
28:25that she was driving.
28:27It became an all-points bullet
28:29and across the United States.
28:31They put up bulletin boards
28:32around lots of different areas,
28:34Texas, Louisiana, Florida,
28:36with Pamela's picture
28:37and information on it.
28:39So it became more
28:40than just a Florida
28:41or a Minnesota story.
28:43It became a coast-to-coast story.
28:45Lois became known,
28:46very well known,
28:47as the killer grandma.
28:51With Lois' escape route
28:53now crossing state lines,
28:55the heat gets turned way up.
28:58The hunt for granny
28:58is now nationwide.
29:02People wanted answers
29:03and people needed to know.
29:04I mean,
29:06she knew a lot of people
29:07in that town.
29:09Do you think she's around here?
29:10Do you think she might
29:11shoot anybody else?
29:14The whole entire community
29:15was completely shocked
29:17and very sad,
29:19very sad.
29:20Like I said,
29:20everybody loved Dave,
29:21everybody loved Lois,
29:23so it was mad at Lois,
29:26it was sad about Dave,
29:27it was a very crazy dynamic
29:29that was going on there.
29:31I had to actually
29:33turn the TVs off
29:34and not let anyone
29:35turn them on
29:36because my sons were small
29:38and Dave and Lois
29:40were grandma and grandpa
29:41to them.
29:46My thoughts
29:47on seeing Lois
29:48wearing Pam's clothes,
29:50I can't hardly comprehend it
29:53right now
29:53because it really bothers me.
29:57It's just so abusive.
29:59It's just a terrible reminder
30:03of what happened to Pam.
30:06I definitely wanted her caught.
30:09Please God,
30:10get her before she kills
30:11another woman.
30:14Killer granny Lois
30:15is just leaving chaos
30:17in her wake,
30:18but the search stretches
30:19into another week
30:21without the cops
30:21catching up to her.
30:23However,
30:23they do catch the news
30:25that she's headed south.
30:27There were several
30:29other license plate reader
30:31hits along a route
30:33to Texas
30:34heading south.
30:37I had a thought
30:38that she would be
30:39trying to leave
30:40the country.
30:42Who knows
30:43where she's going next,
30:44but I think we know
30:45she could kill someone again
30:46because that's already
30:47happened twice.
30:49We were tracking Lois
30:50through license plate readers
30:52on the victim's car.
30:55Eventually,
30:55it came to South Padre Islands.
30:57South Padre Island, Texas,
31:01very close to the border.
31:05On April 19th,
31:07we received information
31:08from the U.S. Marshals Service
31:09that she had went into
31:12a bar and restaurant
31:14called Dirty Owls
31:15and basically was looking
31:16at a menu,
31:17and the manager there
31:18actually recognized her
31:19and called in a tip
31:21to the local police department
31:22or the Marshals Service.
31:23When the Marshals got
31:27to South Padre,
31:28they canvassed the area
31:29and actually located
31:30the vehicle
31:30at a restaurant
31:32right adjacent
31:33to Dirty Owls.
31:35They got the Marshals
31:36rallied and trooped up,
31:38and Lois was by then
31:41sitting in the bar
31:42and yucking it up
31:44like she didn't have
31:45a care in the world.
31:47I was elated.
31:48She wasn't going to be able
31:49to keep this up forever.
31:50Cops have been looking
31:58everywhere for double-murdering
32:04grandma Lois Reese.
32:06But the U.S. Marshals
32:07finally catch up,
32:09and she's just sitting there
32:10sipping a drink
32:11in South Padre,
32:13just a hop, skip,
32:14and a jump from Mexico.
32:16This cadre of Marshals
32:18moved in,
32:19four or five of them,
32:20and said,
32:21we're going to take you outside.
32:23Don't make a scene.
32:25There was no resistance
32:26from Lois,
32:27and it was very interesting
32:29to me how just calm,
32:31cool, and collected she was.
32:32She didn't fight.
32:33She didn't resist.
32:33She didn't ask
32:34a bunch of questions.
32:36She got up off her chair,
32:38and out they went.
32:42She almost just went
32:43willingly with the authorities.
32:46I think Lois knew
32:48that she was caught,
32:49that it was done.
32:51There was a bulletin
32:52over the Associated Press
32:54that she had been arrested.
32:57When I heard that
32:58they had caught her
33:00at South Padre Island,
33:02it was really a relief.
33:04It was like,
33:05this is one closure.
33:08They caught her.
33:10The grandma killer.
33:11Arrangements were made
33:15for us to fly out
33:16to South Padre Island.
33:18We knew we wanted
33:19to speak with her,
33:20and we were hoping
33:21that she would speak with us.
33:23I remember her being led
33:25from the holding cell
33:27into the interview room,
33:28and she kind of just
33:29looked right through me.
33:31And so instead of her
33:33being the outgoing,
33:34jovial person that we see,
33:36once she was caught,
33:37her whole demeanor changed.
33:39She was defeated almost.
33:42And without saying
33:44another word,
33:44she said she wanted
33:45an attorney.
33:48With Lois lawyered up,
33:49there's no way
33:50she's going to confess.
33:52So it's up to the cops
33:54to find some physical evidence
33:56that can tie this granny
33:57to the two murders.
33:58She had secured a hotel room
34:02at a Motel 6
34:04just down the street.
34:06According to hotel receipts,
34:08Lois checked in
34:09on April 9th.
34:11She lived a good life
34:12for 10 days
34:13before they caught up to her.
34:15We were able
34:16to secure search warrants
34:17for the motel room
34:18where she was staying at,
34:20and we found two handguns,
34:21a 9mm and a .22 caliber.
34:24The .22 caliber,
34:26specifically,
34:27we believe to be
34:27the murder weapon.
34:30We found the victim's clothing
34:33and specifically the hat
34:35that was shown
34:36on surveillance footage
34:37of her wearing
34:38at the bank
34:39at the hotel
34:40after she had committed
34:41the murder.
34:42Also, something of note
34:43was a black bag,
34:45kind of like a go bag,
34:46and inside,
34:47there was latex gloves,
34:49there was duct tape,
34:50there was our victim's
34:51personal information,
34:53her wallet,
34:54driver's license.
34:58I think that Lois,
35:01in her desperation,
35:02because she was,
35:03I'm sure, getting antsy
35:05wanting to gamble
35:05with this addiction of hers,
35:08I think she knew
35:09that Pam had money.
35:12I think she killed Pamela
35:14to get another car
35:16and to get more money.
35:17And so she clearly
35:19had a bit of a pattern.
35:21So she gets to
35:23South Padre Island,
35:25she goes and finds herself
35:27a spot to sit
35:28and kind of blend in
35:30and start hunting.
35:34We did an extensive canvas
35:36and we spoke with
35:37numerous people
35:38that she came into contact with.
35:40We were able to confirm
35:42with a lot of witnesses.
35:44She was just having
35:45a great time
35:45hanging with people,
35:47having drinks at the bar,
35:48hanging out by the pool.
35:50She told some people
35:51that she was a grandmother,
35:52she had kids, grandkids,
35:54that she was a widow,
35:56that her husband died recently.
35:59Her facade was probably
36:00of an innocent lady.
36:02Anybody will talk to her.
36:06I came across a lady
36:08who said that she interacted
36:09often with Lois.
36:11They went to dinner together.
36:13She actually invited her
36:14at one point back
36:15to her own house.
36:17She had kind of befriended Lois.
36:20I remember specifically
36:21she had different color hair.
36:23But I also know that
36:24in the search warrant
36:25at the motel room
36:26there was hair dye
36:27that we collected.
36:28It was a dark color,
36:30just like the witness out there.
36:33And she possibly thought
36:34that she might be
36:35her next victim.
36:36I do think she was planning
36:41on killing somebody
36:42in South Padre also
36:43and getting a new identity
36:45to go across the border.
36:47So between this gal
36:49in South Padre and myself,
36:50we're very lucky
36:52that we're still here.
36:54It was a relief
36:55that she'd been caught,
36:57that this so-called manhunt
36:58for the killer grandma
36:59was over,
37:00and now came a hard part,
37:02the court case.
37:03This was a seminal moment
37:06for this case.
37:07The court proceedings
37:08facing here in Florida
37:09and in Minnesota as well.
37:20After she led the cops
37:22on a many-state wild goose chase,
37:25killer granny Lois Reese
37:26has to face the music
37:28for killing Pam Hutchinson
37:30in Florida
37:30and her husband David Reese
37:33was in Minnesota.
37:35So in Florida,
37:36she was charged
37:37with first-degree homicide.
37:38She was also charged
37:40in Minnesota
37:41with first-degree homicide.
37:43Based on the crime,
37:45death penalty
37:46was on the table for her.
37:48Once Lois is locked up
37:50and staring down
37:51the consequences,
37:52including the possibility
37:54of the death penalty,
37:56she suddenly has
37:57a change of heart.
37:59I eventually heard
38:00that Lois pled guilty
38:02to the crime of murder
38:03down here
38:03in exchange for
38:05the death penalty
38:06being taken off the table.
38:14I wanted it to go to trial.
38:17They claimed that
38:18they didn't want to put
38:19the family through
38:20any extra whatever,
38:22murder, but I'd have been
38:23in court every day.
38:25I wanted no mercy for her.
38:29On December 18, 2019,
38:31in Lee County Court,
38:33Lois pled guilty
38:34to murder.
38:36It became a huge story.
38:39Major breaking news.
38:40who is the so-called
38:41killer grandma
38:42on Fort Myers Beach
38:42will spend the rest
38:43of her life in prison
38:44after pleading guilty.
38:46Once the case
38:46was wrapped up in Florida,
38:48she was then transported
38:50up to Minnesota,
38:50where she also entered
38:52a plea of guilty up there.
38:55All investigators can hope
38:57is that Lois' statement
38:59just shows us all
39:00how she went
39:01from loving grandmother
39:02to husband killer.
39:04And everything spiraled
39:06from there
39:06down a path
39:07of fraud and murder.
39:12Lois' story is that
39:13he was mad
39:14and they had argued
39:15and that he walked
39:16into their bedroom
39:17and he had a .22
39:19in his bedroom,
39:21handed her the gun
39:22and said,
39:25well, why don't you
39:25just kill yourself?
39:28She claims
39:29that that just set her off
39:31and she said,
39:34I aimed right at his heart
39:35and I pulled the trigger.
39:40I didn't believe that.
39:42Based on where he was
39:43in the bathroom,
39:44I mean,
39:44if she did have that argument
39:46outside of the bathroom
39:47where the guns were kept,
39:49she's not moving that man
39:50into the bathroom.
39:51That's why I think
39:52she snuck up on him
39:53just like she probably did
39:55our victim
39:56in Fort Myers Beach.
39:58Everything's a lie with her.
40:01Lois' addiction
40:05from what the authorities
40:06in Minnesota told me
40:07was gambling.
40:08She had a love
40:09for the casinos,
40:10a love for gambling
40:11and that was part
40:13of the problem
40:14that she had
40:15with her husband
40:15from what I was told.
40:16The waxworm farm
40:19was successful
40:19but it was
40:21not making money
40:22because Lois
40:23was spending it all
40:25and asking Dave
40:27for more money
40:28and not terribly long
40:29before he was killed,
40:31he said,
40:31I'm done.
40:32I'm cutting her off.
40:34And I just think
40:35that everything
40:36caught up with her.
40:37That's the only thing
40:38I could think of
40:39why she would do
40:40any of this
40:42is just a legit
40:43mental breakdown.
40:44She finally reached
40:48a breaking point
40:48and she chose
40:50the most drastic route.
40:54In Florida,
40:55she got a life sentence
40:56and eventually
40:58she got the same
40:59in Minnesota.
41:00It was just
41:05so sad
41:06that, you know,
41:07to lose a friend
41:08and lose Dave
41:10and lose her
41:11and you want to
41:13still love them
41:14because you're your friend
41:15but what she did
41:16was so horrible.
41:20And to this day,
41:21it's still crazy to me.
41:22Like, I just don't,
41:24I still can't
41:24wrap my head around it.
41:25Dave was fantastic.
41:34His laugh
41:35was so contagious.
41:36If you ever heard
41:37his laugh,
41:38you will never forget it.
41:39Super friendly.
41:41He loved to, like,
41:42give hugs
41:43and he was just
41:45so great.
41:48One of my favorite
41:49memories of Pam,
41:51when she would come home,
41:53if I wasn't up,
41:54she'd wake me up
41:55and we'd sit there
41:56and talk
41:57for two, three hours
41:58until I'd finally say,
41:59Pam, I've got to go to bed.
42:02And we would jabber-jabber
42:04for hours,
42:04just talk and laugh
42:06and joke.
42:07She just had a good heart.
42:09She had a very good heart.
42:14I mean,
42:14the ripple effects
42:16of not only her,
42:17her murder victims
42:19but people who love them,
42:21her own children,
42:23her own grandchildren.
42:25I mean,
42:26oh, God, the pain.
42:29I feel like Lois
42:30kind of tainted
42:31the grandmother image
42:32for all of us.
42:33I have 10 grandkids myself.
42:36Love them all dearly.
42:37Talk about them all the time
42:39just like she does.
42:40And as a grandmother myself,
42:42I can't imagine
42:43being less than
42:45the best example
42:46I can be
42:46for my grandchildren.
42:48And that's how it should be.
42:50That's just how it should be.
42:52I don't care.
42:55I don't care.
42:55We'll be at some of those
42:56things.
42:57We can't have
42:59you,
43:00we won't do it again.
43:01Bye-bye.
43:01Iすג
43:04I love you
43:07I love you,
43:08I'm
43:08I really
43:10love you,
43:11I love you.
43:11For me,
43:12I love you,
43:12I love you.
43:13I love you
43:14I love you.
43:14I love you,
43:16I love you,
43:16I love you,
