00:00Considered acceptable for all ages.
00:11Ivanhoe, North Carolina.
00:12Beautiful little place.
00:14Perfect little cabin.
00:15About 700 square feet.
00:17The floor was in bad shape.
00:19I turned right to got into it.
00:21The roof we were planning on replacing next year.
00:24The decks are in shambles.
00:30Timber!
00:31We lifted it up to take the posts out, and the posts just fell down.
00:36So it's a good thing we're replacing that.
00:40We've got to put these strips 16 on center across this whole thing and go around the window.
00:44That way the siding can go up.
00:48Lifty finally made it to the party.
00:50Yesterday, I was as sick as I have been ever in my life.
00:53Wow.
00:54Wow.
00:54Did it change?
00:56Oh, my gosh.
00:57They have been knocking it out of the park, man.
00:58Crew's been after it?
01:00Been after it.
01:00Inside, outside, all around.
01:16Hey, bud.
01:17I think you've noticed that we were one short this morning.
01:21You know, with my 30-some years of construction experience,
01:24renovation hunters is unlike anything I've ever experienced before.
01:29It is physically and mentally demanding for everybody.
01:33Sometimes it's a little more than what people are used to, and that's understandable.
01:37You know, we've had the unfortunate separation of a crew member.
01:41She's been a great crew member for the first two seasons, and we wish Christy Miller the best, understand completely.
01:53You know, I hate losing one of the family, but, you know, people watch what these guys do.
01:58You can't get stuff built in a day or two days, and it comes with a pressure that's pretty intense.
02:04We'll get back on track and keep the family together as much as we can.
02:08She's been with us since the first one.
02:10It's not part of the family we want to lose.
02:12We're going to, you know, tighten up the shoestrings, get the elbows up, and we're going to work.
02:16Tiny towns in the middle of nowhere
02:21You'd never hear about unless you've been there
02:25Little dogs on the big hat
02:27Keepin' the train on the track
02:29Carryin' the road on the back
02:32These tiny towns make the world go round
02:38Yeah, these tiny towns
02:41Renovation Hunters is presented by Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods
02:53All right, let's go, let's go, let's go
03:23Well, it's down to just me for the shiplap, but, fortunately, there's not too much left to do, and I'm tall enough to reach the ceiling, so I think it'll be all right.
03:42It's day four. I'm still working on the shiplap in the living room and kitchen area, and then I know the inspector is coming tomorrow morning.
03:53So I'm pretty sure it's going to be all hands on deck framing this new addition after lunch.
04:02After talking with Kevin, making sure everything was in line, moving forward, my main task was habitat, habitat, habitat.
04:10And we had quite a large task in front of us, but I had Kerry Tonnelly in from Wildlife Farming. What a worker he is.
04:18Does it get any prettier than this?
04:22It's beautiful.
04:23Can you imagine those three toms rolling in here all strutted up in this beautiful green field? Come on.
04:30Let's go look at this timber.
04:32Let's check it out.
04:32Because this is already done. We don't have to mess with this. We're going back here.
04:36I had met Hal years ago, and he felt like what we did with wildlife farming would be a great fit for the habitat side of renovation hunters.
04:47This is going to be a really, really good staging area.
04:51And, like we were talking, this is thick.
04:54Super thick.
04:55Yeah, unpressured. These deer are going to take this path in.
04:59They're going to graze on their way in.
05:00It's going to allow to get some of those mature deer in the staging area that you're not going to see out here in these fields so early.
05:06So my thought is to spray a lot of this, but then let's bring the monster mower in here and just hammer all this down.
05:14And I want to take some of this out of here, but I want to leave select trees to be licking branch.
05:21You know what I'm saying?
05:22Let's take away all of them and give them select ones so we can concentrate.
05:26Right, push them to one spot.
05:28Yep.
05:28So Hal has been a delight to be with this week.
05:33His passion for the food plot habitat side of these builds, I don't think people get to see that as much.
05:40I think he truly loves the outdoors, the habitat, and creating something out of nothing.
05:47It's very fulfilling to work with a guy that has as much passion as I do about this kind of stuff.
05:54I mean, we're going to get to work out.
05:55We're going to see what that monster mower is made of because...
05:58We're going to find out.
05:59Because you're going to have to cut.
06:01But if you look at this, between that over there and what we've got to do down here, we've got a few acres to plant.
06:07Yeah, we've got some time.
06:08Yeah.
06:08And so we've got a lot of work to do.
06:10That's what it is.
06:20This was our first build as far as bringing equipment here.
06:24We didn't have anything to work with.
06:25This is go into the brush, into the woods, and let's create something.
06:29So we just decided to bring some of our mulching equipment, some of our forestry equipment, the drill.
06:34We needed to spread some lime and some fertilizer.
06:36So we kind of just brought what we needed according to Hal's recommendations.
06:43They have this thing called a brush monster.
06:47And I'm telling you, it lives up to the name.
06:50That thing is wicked.
06:52It cuts down trees that are 10 inches around and takes them right to the ground.
06:57We would not have got it done in a week's time for what we got done in a day's time with that brush monster.
07:03I took down trees that most people wouldn't tackle with any kind of disc mulcher, and it did it with ease.
07:10Seeing an area that is nothing but brush, sticks, leaves turn into a wide-open plot, the aspect of that's really cool.
07:18Hal got sick, and he was delayed, but I thought he wanted to come back to us here on the build.
07:24But there's a big food plot set up, and Carrie from Wildlife Farming, all these cool tools.
07:30But it's a lot of work, and he had his hands full.
07:34So, hey, buddy, we're going to keep plugging away.
07:37We got this.
07:45In a fun turn of events, I got to leave the job, and I got to go visit the boys from Stone Coat.
07:51So I went down the road, and Scott and Mitch were pouring some beautiful countertops, and so we worked on it for a little bit.
07:57What are you boys working on?
07:58They've requested a soapstone, but with a twist.
08:01With a twist? What's our twist?
08:02Our twist is going to be a couple accent colors.
08:05We're going to add a little bit of blue earth to the base.
08:07All right.
08:07And then, oftentimes, I am not adding any shine or sparkle to it.
08:12It's just my black dye and white dye, but I'm going to add some black mica to give it a shine.
08:17Sounds good.
08:18I spent a decade in the granite industry, installing granite across southern Oregon,
08:22and Stone Coat Epoxy mimics high-end stone at an affordable price.
08:26What would our cost-saving be if we did a natural stone versus poured?
08:32Oh, easily 10 times your money.
08:34You take an MBF panel, you can pour over existing countertops, and it's just epoxy that goes over top of it,
08:39but it's affordable, so anybody can do it.
08:41It is durable.
08:42You can set heat on it.
08:43You can do all kinds of stuff, and you're not paying thousands of dollars.
08:46So it's a great DIY product.
08:48So on this, we're kind of just going to not overdone, just boom, boom, boom.
08:55So these are some pretty fast builds.
08:58We're doing a complete home renovation in seven days.
09:01Go talk to a granite shop, and they're going to say, see me in seven weeks.
09:05So we're able to come on site.
09:07We port our countertops in the Airbnb garage, and then three days later,
09:11we're installing those countertops in the customer's home.
09:14We're going to stick around and get rid of all the air, make sure this is finishing up good.
09:17We've got one more to make, but then we'll be up north in a couple days to wrap this whole project up.
09:22Perfect.
09:23It's looking good.
09:23They're going to love it.
09:24Soapstone with a twist.
09:26Back with you.
09:28So Graybar Electric has come on as a partner this year for renovation hunters.
09:32You know, they brought so many new products to this build that's going to be just terrific.
09:38We have an electrical panel being replaced in there.
09:41They also have cell phone boosters, which is something that is necessitated here on this property.
09:45You guys from Graybar, this is absolutely amazing.
09:50For when you're out in remote locations, I hunt all over the world, right?
09:54And to be able to go and take this instrument and tell people before they buy a piece of property
09:59or lease a piece of land, this is the communication brand you need to have with you, that is crazy.
10:05How does it work?
10:05So what this does is we're actually looking for the strongest signal in the best direction that we can pull it from.
10:12We can't magnify it, boost it, or manufacture it.
10:16We've got to take what's outside to get it inside.
10:18So we're trying to figure out directionally which signal is the strongest.
10:22By which brand?
10:23Well, by all brands.
10:24By all carriers.
10:25This is all carriers.
10:26They're going to put this up on top of the flagpole, or we are, at the exact degree they gave us,
10:32and then it's going to feed down into the house, and once it gets in the house,
10:36it's going to magnify their cell phone service to where they don't have the problems that they have here now.
10:42Can't get a text, can't make a phone call, can't send a picture to the wives showing,
10:47hey, I killed a great big deer, or the boy's got a turkey.
10:50Where have y'all been the last 25 years of my life?
10:53Perfectly.
10:54Well, there you go.
10:55Well, we appreciate the opportunity to come out here and be a part of this.
10:58Two-in-one, cell service, flagpole.
11:02Keep that pole close enough to the house.
11:03We've got about 70 feet of cable to work with to get from that top of that pole,
11:07down the pole, and into the house, and you'll be good to go.
11:10Now, communication will be at its best thanks to the technology of Graybar.
11:25So the biggest thing that we have this week is making sure that we get the deck set up perfectly ready, built to code,
11:37because we cannot afford to have the inspector come out here and have to come back.
11:43So we have taken the time to make sure that all of our Strongtie products are on the rafters.
11:49They're underneath, so when the inspector comes, we are all set.
11:53We can get the stone coat floor in, and we can move on to just finishing out the inside and finishing out the siding on the back.
12:00We are finally on to the addition portion of our build.
12:06It's been a long time coming.
12:08We had to get footing inspections, and of course that happens late, but we got the footings in.
12:15We went ahead and pre-built the deck.
12:17That was easy to do with all of our Simpson straps.
12:20Now we just have to wait until this footing sets up, put our anchors in, band all this together.
12:28Here's the bad news.
12:29We got framing inspection tomorrow on this, so we got some work to do tonight.
12:35Don't bring a trim hammer on framing day because everyone is going to laugh at you.
12:41But, you know, I got to help put some walls up, and that was awesome.
12:45So I guess I've got that tucked in my tool belt for the next build.
12:49Hopefully I'll get to do it again.
12:53For this build, one of the things that we needed to do was fix the roof.
12:57So I have a partner that I work with, John Truitt from Grove Park Fine Homes.
13:01Our roofing company, DLV Roofing, contacted me and said, hey, we would love to come do a roof for one of your shows.
13:09He came out here, I think, with 10 guys.
13:13Now they came by to take a look at the place.
13:15Tuesday night, I think at 7 o'clock, they started ripping the roof off.
13:20And everybody's just watching him like, wow, these guys are just tearing into it.
13:27The roofing crew came in.
13:29They were like ants on an ant mound.
13:31People everywhere, metal flying.
13:33Of course, we're on the back end, so there's wood flying, sawdust in the air.
13:37Guys here, guys there, guys everywhere.
13:40It was amazing.
13:40These are the moments that are the most fun on a job site like this.
13:45We've made amazing progress on this rear porch, but unfortunately, we're not quite there.
13:51We're staying late.
13:52We're going to be burning the midnight oil.
13:55Luckily, we've got Streamlight as a sponsor because otherwise, we would be in the dark.
14:10I'm an outdoorsman myself, and any time you can give back to the community, I think you should.
14:17Back home, we try to do one or two roofs a year, donate roofs for people who are needing.
14:23So we just enjoy getting out and helping the community.
14:26Have them show up at 7 a.m. and start running metal pans for the standing seam roof.
14:31And in the time they did, you know how they say that you run your race according to your competition?
14:37We're already beat.
14:38We're already tired.
14:39They come in like they just hit the star in Mario, and they're flying.
14:45It's like a circus up there.
14:46They're tossing things up.
14:47They're tossing things down.
14:49We're below.
14:50They never hit us, which was pretty impressive.
14:52When those guys took off and started putting that roof on, the rest of our renovation hunters were like, all right.
15:00How are we not to be pumped up and motivated to see these guys?
15:04But we have to get this roof on the addition because they are coming up to finish in the old roof.
15:12And if we don't finish the new roof, then they're just going to be standing there looking at us.
15:17Despite being here till quarter of 10 and up early the next morning, they kicked it into high gear.
15:24And the amount of work that got done was just incredible.
15:28We figured we would bring a different profile to it.
15:32So the standing seam roof is the absolute best metal roof that you could put on a house.
15:38It's what I would consider a forever roof.
15:42Mr. Ball, we've enjoyed it.
15:46Looks like there's a new roof on the old cabin.
15:48There is.
15:48It looks good.
15:49Yeah, that looks fantastic.
15:50I think it looks great.
15:51You guys did an awesome job.
15:53Can't believe how quick it went.
15:54We appreciate you inviting us down and having us.
15:56We enjoyed it.
15:58This means a lot to all of us.
16:00We appreciate it.
16:00Safe travels back to the mountains.
16:02Take care.
16:08Man.
16:09Boy, you're going to be proud.
16:12You ought to see that place over there.
16:14It is going to be a wildlife mecca.
16:17We have changed it.
16:18I am so excited about that.
16:21Man, that roof looks good.
16:22I wonder what happened to you.
16:25Oh, it was 8,000 pounds of lime and fertilizer unloading, loading, and pouring in an opera.
16:29But other than that, it really looks good.
16:32How about you?
16:32How's it been going?
16:33What?
16:34What's wrong?
16:35The inspection that we needed first thing this morning, why we stayed till 10 o'clock last night.
16:39Right.
16:40Never happened.
16:41Didn't happen this morning.
16:42Didn't happen today.
16:43It's not like they're busy.
16:44It missed the system.
16:45Hopefully, tomorrow morning, I can convince them to come out.
16:49What can we not?
16:50We can finish the siding, right?
16:51He doesn't want the siding done because he wants to verify the nailing patterns.
16:54The what?
16:55The nailing patterns of our siding.
16:58I'm glad your food plots worked out for you.
16:59I'm sorry, bud.
17:00But I'm going to tell you this.
17:02Next build, I'm doing food plots.
17:04You're staying here.
17:05So finally, after days of hard work on the reno, Mike and I got to do what we love to do the most.
17:27We got to set up the on-the-spot blind.
17:30We got the solar panels on there.
17:32We got all the electrical hooked up.
17:34We put a little bit of touch-up paint on there now.
17:38Make it look all pretty light.
17:39All the wall control's in.
17:40Everything's hung.
17:41We have fridges in there.
17:42We have fans, heaters if they want them in the winter.
17:46Everything's ready to go on there.
17:47Totally soundproof again.
17:49Shingled roof.
17:50It helps when you number things so you know where it goes.
17:53It's made to tuck in the corner.
17:55So we did a five-by-five.
17:57And it sits perfect right where they wanted it.
18:00And it's literally just tucked in the tree line.
18:02Overlooking a huge food plot and a feeder and everything else.
18:06These guys are going to love this blind.
18:09One of the great things about the cabin is that it is very close by to a hunting property that we have just down the road.
18:17And that has taken up all of my free time in trying to figure it out, trying to figure out how to improve it.
18:24So today we planted the food plots with the pH Outdoors G5.
18:32We chose that because the sandy conditions, we didn't want to disc, we didn't want to till these plots at all.
18:38They're already so dry that if we were to work the plots up, we were going to lose that much moisture.
18:43So we calibrated the drill today for 85 pounds per acre and calibrated for the green cover seed.
18:49And the food plots are done.
18:51They planted themselves basically with this drill.
18:53We have truly changed the whole look of this property.
18:56It is going to hunt better.
18:58And the food that we're going to have there will be year-round food.
19:01So the neighbor's deer are going to now become his deer.
19:04Hopefully they can take this template that we've given them and expand over their whole property to do exactly the same thing.
19:10So this is my second trip out with the Renovation Hunters crew.
19:20Did Hawassie, Virginia last year.
19:23And then Hal and Kev let me know they're going to be down a couple guys on the crew.
19:26And with my background in construction and plumbing, electrical, needing and air, figured I'd be a good fit for the crew.
19:32All right.
19:33Well, now that's done.
19:35We're going to get started running some water and power out here to these shipping containers.
19:38This is a new and upgraded skinning shack is what we're going with.
19:45We're going to put in some new lights outside, some new lights inside, a new place to hang your deer up.
19:50It's going to be first class when we get it done.
19:54Got our inspection today.
19:56The inspection department realized that they made a mistake and did not schedule for yesterday morning.
20:01He did come out this morning.
20:02He passed everything.
20:03We had to make a few minor adjustments.
20:07Not a big deal.
20:08Thought we can go ahead and get started on this siding.
20:11Here we go.
20:1541 and 3 quarter.
20:17Richard, 41 and 3 quarter.
20:19All right.
20:19So what we've got here is this forever barn wood in this room.
20:22Got Mike.
20:23You got Richard.
20:24They're cutting for us, keeping us flowing.
20:26It's getting late in the evening, but this stuff is going up quick now.
20:30We're in a rhythm.
20:31And we're going to try to get the ceiling done tonight.
20:33Kevin, I don't think, will let us go until that's done.
20:35I think we're going to get this stuff wrapped up.
20:39This is the last of the siding.
20:41We've got to bang out the paint.
20:42Kevin's going to get in here, start rolling on that.
20:45It's got to be finished up because Stone Coat's going to come finish up the inside.
20:49The family's coming in a day and a half.
20:51The family's coming in a day and a half.
