00:40Kid Tricks!
00:44Let me ask you a question. How many of you get the newspaper at home, right?
00:46Everyone gets the newspaper. You've got all kinds of stories in the newspaper.
00:49You've got sports stories and stories about business.
00:52Your moms will clip out coupons, right? Your moms will clip out coupons.
00:55Well, every once in a while, you'll get a story in the paper
00:59about somebody who says they have some kind of a power.
01:02In other words, they say that they can read your mind.
01:05In other words, if you thought of something, they can tell you exactly what you're thinking.
01:08Or, somebody will say that they can predict the future.
01:11In other words, they can tell you what's going to happen before it happens.
01:15Well, as an investigator of people who say that they have different types of powers,
01:19you know what I do? I have to take all the pieces of the puzzle and try and put them together.
01:25And I have to try and figure out if what we're seeing is either a trick or if it's a power.
01:32And I think this one was actually a pretty good trick. Don't you?
01:37Is that pretty good? Thank you.
01:41With a push of the button, I can make most anything disappear from sight.
01:46But becoming a good magician isn't quite that simple.
01:49It takes a lot of skill and a lot of practice.
01:51Hi. I'm Danny Corum.
01:53And you know one question people always ask me?
01:55Danny, are there any magicians who really have powers?
01:58I mean, is everything that you do a trick?
02:01Well, I can tell you there aren't any magicians who really have powers
02:04because everything that we do is a trick.
02:06But unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there who say they have powers who don't.
02:10In my work, I try to find out what's real and what isn't.
02:14This man, James Hydra, claimed to have special mind powers
02:18where he could move things without touching them, like pencils.
02:21Later, we'll find out how he fooled scientists into believing that he had powers.
02:26Today, most of my time is spent as a journalist, which is kind of like a TV reporter.
02:31I take my camera crew and we go out and film people who say they have powers to check out the facts.
02:36It's my job to find out if they really have powers or if they're just faking it.
02:40If they really do have powers, well, we'll be able to see their powers on camera.
02:44So there's no chance of making a mistake.
02:47And of course, if they're faking it, well, they get caught.
02:50So this is what we're going to take a look at.
02:52How can people trick us into believing in powers that they don't have?
02:56Let's find out by starting in Dallas, Texas, where I live.
03:00Texas is the second biggest state in the U.S., and Dallas is one of its biggest cities.
03:05At this luxurious hotel, a psychic fair was held.
03:08Over a thousand people on a Sunday afternoon came out to see what are called psychics,
03:13people who say they have special mind powers.
03:16Every person pays $5 to get in, and then they have to pay each psychic that they want to see.
03:22I know you're probably thinking, what exactly is a psychic?
03:26Well, a psychic is a person who thinks they have special mind powers.
03:29Some say they can tell you what you're thinking without you telling them, like reading your mind.
03:33Others will tell you that they can predict the future, which means they can tell you what's going to happen before it actually happens,
03:39like telling you the score of a football game before it's played.
03:42And some psychics say they can move objects without touching them.
03:45Are their powers real, or are they just faking it?
03:48Let's look at some footage we shot at the psychic fair and find out what they're doing.
03:53This person says that by looking at the lines in your hands, she can tell you what is going to happen to you.
03:58She is called a palm reader. Here's another one.
04:02This person takes weird and bizarre looking cards called tarot cards that look like this.
04:08She thinks that by turning them over and explaining what they mean, she can also tell you what will happen before it happens.
04:17You'll notice that the people who go to these psychics are pretty normal looking.
04:21Most believe that the psychics really have powers.
04:24They come to see the psychics because they're just curious, or they have a problem they hope the psychic can help them solve.
04:30Now the question is, do they really have powers?
04:33Scientists for over 50 years have tried to find out if our brain really has these kinds of powers.
04:38And you know what? They've never found any powers like the psychics say they have.
04:42You see, the psychics are faking it. They don't really have powers.
04:46And by using clever tricks, they can fool people into believing in powers that they don't have.
04:51Watch this next trick I did for some adults where I use these symbols that scientists have used for years in their experiments
04:58to find out if you and I really have ESP, which stands for extrasensory perception.
05:03It means the same thing as psychic mind powers.
05:06I am going to deal out ten symbols.
05:09A star, three wavy lines, a bacon strip or a guy burning rubber.
05:12A cross, a square, a circle.
05:15And we'll repeat this.
05:17What I am going to do is deal one card at a time from the bottom, one symbol at a time.
05:21Now, Kathy, if you think the card is going to match, I want you to, you know, make a guess.
05:25Okay.
05:26Then I will deal the card flush across the cards like this.
05:29Mike, if you don't think the card is going to match, you know, in your guess, I'll deal across the cards like this.
05:34You ready?
05:35Okay.
05:36Here we go.
05:37So we speak up when we think it's going to match?
05:38Yes.
05:39So right here, Kathy, do you think it will match or not match?
05:41Not match.
05:42It won't match?
05:43Okay.
05:44Mike?
05:45Next, this one.
05:46Match.
05:47You think this one will match?
05:48Okay.
05:49Match.
05:50Match?
05:51Mm-hmm.
05:52This one?
05:53No.
05:54This one won't.
05:55And this one?
05:56No.
05:57You don't think this will?
05:58No.
05:59Next one?
06:00Mm-hmm.
06:01You think this will match?
06:02Yes.
06:03This one?
06:04No.
06:05You don't think it will match?
06:06No.
06:07This one?
06:08Yes.
06:09Yes?
06:10Yes.
06:11And the last one?
06:12No.
06:13No.
06:14All right.
06:15You're pretty decisive in that one.
06:16Oh, yes.
06:17I'm very sure of that last one.
06:18Almost got a hernia.
06:20Look.
06:21Well, let's take a look at the ones that you said wouldn't match.
06:24Okay.
06:25If they don't, that's no big deal.
06:27Those don't match.
06:29None of those match.
06:31Still, that's pretty good that none of them match.
06:34Notice the ones that you said wouldn't match.
06:36Let's see how the ones that you said would match.
06:38Let's see how you fared.
06:39Those two matched.
06:41That's incredible.
06:42Those two matched.
06:43And so did the last one.
06:45Now, am I on a roll off?
06:47Are we on a roll off?
06:48The reason everyone's laughing is because they know that what they're seeing is a trick.
06:52I wouldn't lie to them and say that I had a power that I really didn't have.
06:55Now, remember the folks at the psychic fair?
06:57The men and women who said they are psychics?
07:00Well, they want people to believe they have power so they can make money.
07:04Although some of them do it because they want to feel important and special by pretending
07:08to have powers that they don't have.
07:10I offered to pay any psychic at the fair $5,000 if they would tell me what I was thinking
07:16or predict the future before it happened or move something with only mind powers.
07:20The only catch was they had to do it on camera.
07:23Why?
07:24Because the camera doesn't lie.
07:26It shows us what's really there.
07:28If the psychics really have powers, you'd think they would want to do something to get the $5,000.
07:33Watch what happened.
07:34They got angry and asked us to leave.
07:37Why is that?
07:38Why am I not welcome, sir?
07:39I am asking you to leave, sir.
07:40Why?
07:41Because.
07:42Crazy hell.
07:43That's good enough.
07:44Just leave.
07:45Why is that?
07:46I'm asking you two to leave also.
07:51Okay, do me a favor.
07:52Just get a last shot right there.
07:54You want to let them shoot a picture of the solicitation sign?
07:57Why do you think they forced us to leave?
08:00The answer is simple.
08:01They don't really have powers.
08:03In 15 years of watching people who say they have psychic mind powers, I've never found a real psychic.
08:09As a matter of fact, in every case, the person was either faking it, there really wasn't a power, or the person's mind wasn't well and they only thought they had a power that they didn't have.
08:18Well, you may ask, if the psychics don't really have powers, why do people go to see them?
08:24And that's a good question.
08:25First, most people don't know that they can be tricked by someone who says they have powers.
08:30And second, most people want to believe that somehow our brains can have special powers.
08:36There are even games people play where they pretend to have powers, evil powers that aren't good games to play.
08:43One game is called the Ouija board.
08:45When people use the Ouija board, they put their hands on what is called the planchette.
08:49Then, they move their hands around on the board that has letters and the words yes and no.
08:54People believe that a spirit will help them spell out words that will tell them something important and answer yes and no questions.
09:01Scientists know it is the person moving the planchette and not a spirit, but it's dangerous to pretend that a spirit is in you.
09:09Another game that's best to leave alone is Dungeons and Dragons.
09:14In this game, people pretend they're witches and sorcerers and that they kill and hurt people.
09:19You might ask why you shouldn't play with one of these games, say in your home or at a friend's house.
09:24Well, any time that you pretend that there's an evil spirit in you or that you're killing somebody else,
09:28you run the risk that you might be messing up your own mind or someone else's.
09:33And in many cases, kids have either killed each other or killed themselves by pretending to play these kinds of games.
09:40If you or a friend have a game like this in your house, throw it out and get rid of it.
09:44When you have to pretend that you have an evil power in order to play a game,
09:48it's not the kind of game you should play.
09:50There are plenty of other games to play.
09:52Games that are lots of fun and no chance of anyone getting hurt or hurting others.
09:57Remember this man who claimed he could move things without touching them?
10:00Well, he told me that he used to pretend that he had an imaginary Chinese teacher who taught him how to have mind powers.
10:07You see, everything he did was a clever trick.
10:10I produced a television special, Psychic Confession, in which I showed how he made pencils move,
10:16caused pages of a telephone book to turn over, and even made a dollar bill rotate on the head of a pin under a glass fish tank.
10:23How did he do it? By blowing little puffs of air that no one could see.
10:28The pencil, which is balanced on the edge of the table, turns by exhaling a gentle puff of air on the tabletop.
10:34By the time the air moves along the table and hits the pencil, his head is already turned.
10:39The puff of air is also what made the pages of the telephone book turn over.
10:44The turning bill under the glass fish tank was the cleverest of his tricks.
10:48Heydrich did it by blowing on the tabletop.
10:50The air slipped under a crack where the tank didn't meet the table flush, causing the bill to turn.
10:56His tricks were so convincing that he fooled most everyone.
11:00Newspaper reporters, lawyers, doctors, and even a scientist who wrote a paper stating that Heydrich really had powers.
11:09This is the reason we should never believe someone has a power just because we hear about them on television or read about them in the newspaper.
11:16Remember, even good reporters can be fooled.
11:18That's the reason I take a camera crew and we film people who say that they have powers.
11:23If they really have powers, we'll actually be able to see their powers on camera.
11:27And if not, they get caught cheating and sometimes go to jail.
11:32Now let's watch some good tricks where nobody pretends to have a power.
11:37What I'd like you to do is to take this salt shaker and take off the top.
11:42Remove the top.
11:43That's good.
11:44Those hands do that perfectly.
11:46Give her another hand for doing that.
11:48That was great.
11:49And I want you to poke your thumb down in the middle of the handkerchief.
11:53Poke it down.
11:54All the way in.
11:55You can take it out now.
11:56That's right.
11:57As a matter of fact, take this back with you.
11:59There you go.
12:00Go ahead.
12:01Pour a little bit of salt in the center of the handkerchief.
12:04Go ahead.
12:05A little bit more.
12:07Go ahead.
12:08Pour some more in.
12:09A little bit more.
12:11Okay.
12:12That's good.
12:13Make sure it's all in the center.
12:14As a matter of fact, you pour two grains too many in there.
12:17One, two.
12:18As a matter of fact, there's three.
12:19We'll give you the third one back.
12:20What I'd like you to do is to blow lightly on the handkerchief.
12:26Blow.
12:27I said blow, not spit.
12:29Go ahead and do it again.
12:31Very good.
12:32And you know what happens to the salt?
12:34It vanishes.
12:36It's gone.
12:38Now do you know where it is, Trace?
12:40Do you have any idea where it is?
12:41No.
12:42No idea at all?
12:43Would you like to know?
12:44Yeah.
12:45It's right up here.
12:46Now look, right here.
12:47Oh.
12:48Can you see the zipper?
12:49Yeah.
12:50See, there's a zipper.
12:51You unzip the pocket of air and you reach in and you take it out like that.
12:53Did you see me take it out?
12:54Yeah.
12:55Put your hand out.
12:56Like this.
12:58And we pour it into your hand.
13:01Like that.
13:03Look at that.
13:04Exactly.
13:05I have a little guy here.
13:10Can you hear him?
13:12No.
13:13That's because he's not there.
13:15Fold him in like this and this and like this.
13:18Wake him up.
13:19You go ahead.
13:20Pat him.
13:21Wake him up.
13:22Say wake up.
13:23Wake up.
13:24Did you feel him wake up?
13:25You didn't?
13:26Nope.
13:27Watch.
13:28Something's going to happen.
13:29Now there's nothing under there, is there?
13:30No.
13:31No magnets.
13:32No threads.
13:36No koala bears.
13:41Something's beginning to grow.
13:45It's growing.
13:49I think it's getting bigger.
13:52What is your name again?
13:53Ashley.
13:54Ashley, I want to make sure you don't forget it during this thing.
13:56Because this is weird.
13:57It's growing.
13:58Look at how big it's getting.
13:59As a matter of fact, he looks real big, doesn't he?
14:02But you know what?
14:04There's nothing there.
14:05He's gone.
14:10I'll tell you what.
14:11Let's do something with time.
14:13I want you to think of an hour on the clock face.
14:16In other words, if you're thinking of two o'clock, you'd remove two cards from the deck.
14:21Now I haven't asked you to select a particular hour, have I?
14:24No.
14:25You've selected the one that you wanted.
14:26I want you to take the cards underneath the table.
14:28Go ahead.
14:29And remove the number of cards that corresponds, that matches the hour that you're thinking of.
14:34When you got it, let me know and hand me the cards.
14:37You got it?
14:38Yeah.
14:39Let me have the cards.
14:40Now if you thought of three o'clock, you would have removed three cards, right?
14:43Right.
14:44On a clock face, Ash, how many hours are there?
14:47Twelve.
14:48There's twelve.
14:49One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.
14:55I'll deal them out in the shape of a clock, just like a clock face.
15:00It's four o'clock, five o'clock, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve o'clock.
15:08I'll pass my hand over the clock like this.
15:12And when I come to the hour, I'll place my hand down.
15:19Is that it?
15:22Honest, was it eleven o'clock?
15:24Yes.
15:25It was eleven o'clock.
15:26Take your cards out.
15:27Count them on the table.
15:28One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven.
15:36Now wait.
15:37We're not through yet.
15:38We're not through.
15:40Each one of these hours is represented by a different card.
15:44Isn't that right?
15:45Each one's different.
15:46Would you turn that one over, Ashley?
15:49And let us see what it is.
15:51It's the nine of hearts.
15:53I wonder what this card is.
15:55Nine of hearts?
15:58The nine of hearts.
16:05And now, let's learn some good tricks.
16:07You know, there are people that'll say that they have a power,
16:10and they'll try and trick us by doing some kind of a trick,
16:12you know, making us think they have some sort of a mental power or whatever.
16:15Amy's learned a trick that makes it look like she's got real big muscles,
16:19and she's going to tackle big Eric Logan.
16:22Now, Eric, I want you to put one hand on top of the other like this,
16:25and with just Amy's two fingers, she's going to push them apart.
16:29Now, press as hard as you can, Eric.
16:30Ready?
16:31Go.
16:32What do you think?
16:33Amy, why don't you let him have a try now?
16:36Go on, Eric.
16:42Now, Amy, why don't you show him how you did it?
16:45Well, I put my thumb in the center of my hand so you couldn't do it.
16:48Right.
16:49So, when her hand was like this, and she tried to push him, it wouldn't go.
16:52And anybody can do that, right?
16:54Amy, would you stand up, and we're going to show him that strength test.
16:57Now, Eric, put your hands down at your side.
16:59Sit up tall like a soldier, feet on the floor, feet together.
17:03With one finger, Amy is going to put her finger on the center of your forehead,
17:09and you're not going to be able to stand up.
17:11You ready?
17:12Go.
17:13Now, try and stand up.
17:16Okay, that's pretty good.
17:21Now, the reason Eric couldn't stand up was because he's off balance,
17:25and all it takes is one finger on the middle of the forehead to keep him off balance so he can't stand up.
17:30But the most important part is when you have your friend do the trick,
17:33you have them keep their hands at their sides, the feet together, and the feet flat on the floor.
17:38And you can't cheat and try and lean forward like this.
17:41They have to try and stand straight up, and it's impossible.
17:44Amy, thanks for that trick, and now Trace is going to do a trick for us.
17:48As a matter of fact, it's kind of like that clock trick I did, wasn't it?
17:51Mm-hmm.
17:52Where, you know, we had you count the cards with an hour.
17:54Right.
17:55You're going to do this trick for Tracee, aren't you?
17:58Yeah.
17:59Why don't you do it for her?
18:00Now, what I want you to do, Tracee, is right now think of a number between 6 and 15.
18:04Okay, I got it.
18:05Okay, now what I want you to do is start at the first of your number, and count down and around,
18:10and then stop at your number, and then with the next coin being as number one,
18:13count back around the circle, and then touch the coin which you land on.
18:17Okay?
18:18Go ahead.
18:20Okay, now my first finger is very sensitive, and it can sense the heat that you gave off when you touched that coin.
18:33So here I go.
18:42That one.
18:45That was really good.
18:46Can we show them how we do it?
18:47Sure.
18:48Okay.
18:49What you do is you take the pennies and you make a circle of nine.
18:53One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and then nine.
19:00Then you take the other five pennies and you make a tail.
19:03So depending upon where you're looking, it could look like a six or a nine.
19:06The secret is no matter what number they select, it will always end up on the same penny.
19:11Tracy, what was the number that you selected?
19:13The number I chose was seven.
19:14Seven.
19:15So if we count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and then you have to count back around the circle,
19:22one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, it ends on this penny.
19:27Let's try nine.
19:28One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
19:32One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
19:37Did you notice what Trace did at the very end?
19:39As soon as this trick was over, what did he do?
19:41He scooped up the pennies, didn't he?
19:43Now, why did you do that, Trace?
19:44Because if I did and someone would count back with a different number and try to figure out the trick.
19:49Then they'd know that you'd always end up on the same penny.
19:52Right.
19:53So what you do is when you gather the pennies up and you make your circle again, leave one penny out and it won't end up on the same penny.
20:00Now, when you do this trick for your friends, are you going to tell them it's a trick or it's a power?
20:05Trick.
20:06Okay.
20:07Tricks are okay when you tell people they are tricks.
20:10This next story is a fascinating one about tricks and powers.
20:14How many of you have an older brother?
20:16Anybody have an older brother?
20:17Eric, you have an older brother?
20:19Yes.
20:20You do? How old is he?
20:21Eleven.
20:22Does he play baseball?
20:23Yes.
20:24He does?
20:25Is he pretty good?
20:26Yeah.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Well, imagine you have an older brother and he's kind of a klutz when he plays baseball and he has a broken arm.
20:34Now you have another older brother and he comes home from college and he has a friend that he said scientists are actually testing him to see if he actually has some kind of a psychic mind power.
20:45So let's say this fellow comes over for dinner.
20:48You're probably going to want to ask him if he's got some kind of a power or not.
20:51Let's suppose you ask him and he says, well, the scientists think that somehow my mind can manipulate matter and cause it to change.
20:58And you say, well, what do you mean?
20:59And so everyone's sitting around the table and he takes out a little glass of water and he sets it down.
21:03He places his hands over and he starts moving his hand over it like this and he closes his eyes and he's concentrating and all of a sudden his hands start shaking and the water starts bubbling and it, boom, it changes to yellow.
21:15And he says, it's now ginger ale.
21:17Now, if you went ahead and drank it and it was ginger ale, what would you think?
21:22Kyle, what would you think it was?
21:23Would you think it was a trick or it's a power?
21:25It's a trick.
21:27A trick?
21:28Very good.
21:29So now you go over and you're sitting and thinking, you think, I'm going to ask him to do something else.
21:34So he says, okay, I can think of something else I can do.
21:37And he tells your brother to come over and he's the one that has the cast on the arm.
21:40He reaches over, puts the hand on your brother's cast.
21:44Your brother's kind of the klutz, remember, he slid into third base, broke his elbow and so he's got this cast on his arm.
21:50He puts his hand on the cast and he closes his eyes and he's concentrating and his hands start shaking and all of a sudden everyone hears a little pop.
21:59And your brother goes, oh, I felt something.
22:02And you say, what happened?
22:04And he says, I don't know, I felt something.
22:06And then the man says, your arm's now healed.
22:09Well, I don't know about you, but I'd want to check it out and go to who?
22:12What would be the best place to go?
22:14A doctor.
22:15Or go to a doctor, right?
22:16So you go to the doctor and the doctor takes the x-ray and you find out the arm is healed.
22:21Now what would you think?
22:22Ooh, that's kind of weird, right?
22:24So you talk to him a little bit more and he says, you know what?
22:27The scientists actually think that if I was to die and my brain was in a certain state,
22:33in other words, I was thinking about certain things, the doctor said that they believe I might actually be able to bring myself back to life.
22:40I don't know about you, but I would tell them, look, I'll believe you if you'll die first and then you come back to life and then I'll believe you.
22:48Am I right? In other words, you wouldn't want to just believe it because somebody said it.
22:51This story that I just told you is the exact same story that took place 2,000 years ago.
22:58Jesus was able to change what? Water into wine.
23:02He was able to heal the sick and he actually brought himself back to life.
23:06But you know what? Jesus knew that there are people out there who will try to trick us.
23:10So he said, look, I know for some of you it may be hard to believe that I really am the Son of God
23:16and that I really rose from the grave and that the only way you can get to heaven is if you believe in me.
23:21So he wanted us to use our mind and heart to think about who he really was.
23:28There are a lot of people who say they have powers who are faking it.
23:32We've not only learned how some tricks work that look like their powers, but we've also seen that all of us can be fooled.
23:39That's the reason it's important that we don't believe something just because we see it on television or read about it in the newspaper.
23:45We have to check out the facts. And when we don't know how to check out the facts, we have to find someone we trust who can help us.
23:52Remember, in over 15 years, I have never found a person who has real mind powers, what some people call psychic powers or ESP.
24:01And kids, games where people pretend to have spirits in them or kill people, get rid of them.
24:07Throw them out. There are plenty of other great games to play.
24:10But you know what? I do believe there are real supernatural powers.
24:14Powers that don't come from our mind, but powers that come from God or Satan.
24:18You see, God's powers are good. He knows what we're thinking, and he also knows what's going to happen to us in the future.
24:24Now, some people will try and trick us and tell us their powers come from God.
24:29Before we believe them, we have to check it out. Ask your pastor or Sunday school teacher.
24:34They'll be glad to help you, because you see, Satan will try and trick us.
24:38He can't read our minds, and he can't predict the future.
24:41But through people like psychics, he'll try and trick us.
24:44But when we have Jesus in our hearts, we don't have to be afraid of Satan's powers, because God will protect us.
24:50When Jesus died and came back to life and then went back to heaven,
24:54he knew that it would be hard for some of us to believe that he really came back to life,
24:58because there are so many people out there faking that they really have powers.
25:02That's why he said that if you want to believe in him, he wants us to check out the facts
25:06and find out how he died and came back to life.
25:09I did, and that's why I asked him into my heart.
25:12And he's always been a friend that I can trust.
25:14And the Bible, well, it's never steered me wrong on how to live my life and love and help others.
25:19After you watch this last trick, why don't you give it some thought and check out the facts about Jesus.
25:25Until the next time, I'm your friend, Danny Coram.
25:30Now, we've already learned that there are a lot of people that say they can read our minds and have powers that don't.
25:35This last trick that we're going to do, and it is a trick, even though it won't look like it's a trick,
25:40will look just like I can read your mind, in other words, tell you what you're thinking,
25:44or predict what is going to happen before it happens.
25:48Are you ready?
25:50You have five symbols, Eric.
25:52You have a circle, a square, a cross, three wavy lines, and a star.
25:57I want you to look them over.
25:58Now, let me ask you, look at me first.
26:00Did I tell you which one of these to think of?
26:03And you don't even know at this time which one you're going to think of.
26:06So, I didn't discuss any of this with you before we began, did we?
26:09Ready?
26:10Go ahead, look at the symbols.
26:12Now, look at me.
26:13I'm going to try and guess which one of these you selected.
26:15Now, when I write on the board, I'm going to move my hand around so you can't really tell what I'm writing.
26:19Okay?
26:20Let me have a card.
26:22We'll place a card over my selection.
26:24You don't know what it is that I've written down.
26:26Now, Eric, would you tell us which one you chose?
26:30And speak up so we can hear you.
26:32The square.
26:33You chose the square.
26:34Point to it, please.
26:35You chose that one.
26:36Would you draw a square underneath mine?
26:38Draw a big square right underneath there.
26:41Very good.
26:42That kind of hurt.
26:46Your name is Barrett.
26:48Barrett, we have a book that's a big favorite around our house.
26:51It's The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis.
26:54It's from The Chronicles of Narny by C.S. Lewis.
26:57Here's what I want you to do.
26:59I'm going to try and guess on a letter now.
27:01Just a letter.
27:02And there's what?
27:03Twelve letters in the alphabet, right?
27:05Mm-hmm.
27:06No, there's 26.
27:07You're shaking your head?
27:08Yes, there's 26.
27:09Let me think.
27:10All right, I'm going to write something down.
27:13Okay, let me have another card.
27:18Now, Barrett, I'd like you to go ahead and open your book.
27:23To any page.
27:24Now, do you want to use that one or do you want to change?
27:26It's fine.
27:27That one's fine?
27:28I'd like you to take your finger like this and anywhere you want to push it down on a word.
27:34What word did you pick?
27:35But.
27:36Excuse me?
27:37But.
27:38But.
27:39Is that what it says?
27:40Does it say that?
27:41Oh, B-U-T.
27:42I see.
27:43But.
27:44Big capital B-U-T.
27:45Which one of the letters do you want to choose?
27:46B, U, or T?
27:47B.
27:48B.
27:49B.
27:50B.
27:51Very good.
27:52And I want you to write a B right underneath mine.
27:54Right?
27:55Okay, and that's a capital B.
27:57Now, the last one's Nicole's.
27:59I'm going to try.
28:01This is the toughest one.
28:02Let's see.
28:03I'm going to try and make a guess on this.
28:05All right.
28:06And if I can have this.
28:08Mm-hmm.
28:09And we'll cover it like that.
28:13Place it on the easel so everyone could see it.
28:16We have a deck of cards here.
28:18Would you step forward, please?
28:19Mm-hmm.
28:20And I'm going to push this forward over here.
28:23This is a giant deck of cards, isn't it?
28:25Mm-hmm.
28:26The reason we're using big cards is, one, so we know that I can't do anything funny with the cards,
28:29you know, like palming the cards like I showed before.
28:32And also so everyone can see that these cards are all different.
28:36They're all different, aren't they?
28:37Mm-hmm.
28:38Go ahead.
28:39Take a look at them.
28:40Make sure they're all different.
28:41Just spread through them.
28:42Right?
28:43Now square them up.
28:44If you'll step behind the easel, Nicole.
28:45Okay.
28:46I'm going to spread these out.
28:47Just like we were, say, at a dinner table when I had borrowed your deck of cards.
28:51I want you to take your right forefinger.
28:53Hold it above the cards like this.
28:55Mm-hmm.
28:56Slowly move your hand across the cards.
28:57And anytime you want, I want you to push your finger down on a card.
29:01Anywhere.
29:02Right there?
29:04Mm-hmm.
29:05Now had you gone one further, you would have selected the three of spades.
29:08Let's slide this back.
29:10Which one did you pick?
29:11Turn it over so they can see it.
29:13Uh-huh.
29:14Turn it over.
29:15Which one is it?
29:16The six of spades.
29:17The one before it was the queen of diamonds.
29:18Uh-huh.
29:19But you chose the six of spades.
29:20Did you know you were going to pick the six of spades from the 52 in the deck?
29:23No.
29:24I didn't either.
29:25Now if you'll, or maybe I didn't, if you'll go ahead and write your card down underneath
29:31where I had written a card down before.
29:33A six?
29:34Six of spades.
29:35Uh-huh.
29:36Just write six S.
29:37Oh, that's a neat way to do it.
29:39I've never seen it done like that.
29:41It looks like six to the S power.
29:43Yeah.
29:44Six of spades.
29:45That's your card.
29:46If you'll hold that in front of you.
29:47You selected the word but.
29:48And the letter?
29:49B.
29:50B.
29:51Capital B.
29:52And you selected?
29:53Square.
29:54The square.
29:55Now if I guess yours, that's not really that big of a deal because you have how many?
30:00Selections.
30:01One out of five, right?
30:02Let's see how I did.
30:05Did I get it?
30:06Yeah.
30:07Huh?
30:08Is that the square?
30:09Uh-huh.
30:10The next one.
30:11Now Barrett, this one's tough.
30:13Because not only did you pick a B, you picked a what kind of B?
30:16Capital B.
30:17A capital B.
30:18Let's see how we did.
30:22Capital B.
30:24My handwriting looks just about as bad as yours does, right?
30:27The last one's the six of spades.
30:29Now, how many cards are in a deck of cards?
30:3152.
30:3252.
30:33That would be totally what?
30:35Awesome.
30:36Am I right if we got that one right?
30:38You picked the six of spades.
30:39You wrote down the six of spades.
30:40Would you remove your card?
30:42Six of spades.
30:44How about it?
30:45And key question, key question coming up.
30:48Was it a trick or a power?
30:50A trick.
30:51A trick.
30:52Very good.
30:53Don't forget it.
