00:00Warner Bros. is heading back into The Matrix with a new movie in the works.
00:04This will be the first Matrix film to not directly involve the Wachowskis,
00:08and instead Drew Goddard is leading the charge.
00:11Warner's announced on Wednesday that the fan-favorite writer and director,
00:14whose credits include The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and World War Z,
00:18has been tapped to write and direct a new Matrix feature for the studio.
00:22Lana Wachowski, meanwhile, will act as an executive producer on the new installment.
00:26Plot details are being kept under wraps,
00:28though the studio said Goddard approached the company with a new take to extend the franchise.
00:33Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement,
00:37Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue The Matrix world,
00:43by both honoring what Lana and Lily began over 25 years ago,
00:47and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.
00:52Released just over 25 years ago, The Matrix was revolutionary,
00:55and a pop culture touchstone for years to come.
00:59Co-written and co-directed by the Wachowskis,
01:01the film revealed how our world was a simulated reality,
01:04with humans actually being used as batteries for intelligent machines,
01:08and how one messiah-like figure named Neo was chosen to lead a rebellion.
01:12Goddard said in a statement,
01:13It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.
01:18Lana and Lily's exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis,
01:21and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.
