00:00:00There's a lot of training and notices about the reality of not being able to cast magic
00:00:05in the marketplace anymore, which wasn't the case even a year ago. Walking into the office
00:00:13of your captain, Edrian Fazir of the Arcane Marshals, you see that Edrian looks up at
00:00:21you, and there's someone seated in his office already, Sir Harrandus Einfazen of the Council
00:00:29of the Chamber of Lords Advisory. Your captain, Edrian, looks at you. Older man, big belly, rotund,
00:00:36he's got a strap of white around his chin, human man, looks up and goes,
00:00:44Azernay, good to see you, Milan. Have you met Sir Einfazen?
00:00:49I turn to take this stranger in. Have I met him before?
00:00:54You recognize him as a knighted lord of the House Einfazen.
00:00:59Mm-hmm.
00:01:01He looks to you and says, it is a pleasure to meet you. You are Azernay Nayar.
00:01:08I stiffen up and become very formal, taking my job very seriously, and I give him a nod,
00:01:14and I say, at your pleasure, Sir Harrandus.
00:01:17It is an honor. I understand that you were stationed to the execution yesterday.
00:01:23I was indeed.
00:01:27I understand the complexities of someone who enjoyed the mixed reputation of the Azifeng.
00:01:35There are many in the city that were the victims of his criminality, but also there are many who saw
00:01:44within him a hero, especially of this town of which he was born. A complicated figure, I think we
00:01:50can all agree, yes?
00:01:51Yes, sir.
00:01:52I am meeting with your captain, Fazir, simply to engage in the offering of resources.
00:02:07It has come to the attention of the House Einfazen, in its seat on the Chamber of Lords advisory to the
00:02:14Revolutionary Council, that the public funds have been somewhat diminished of late, and it is the
00:02:27opinion of myself, as a member of the Chamber of the Lords advisory, that the Revolutionary Guard has
00:02:36for too long been tasked with the sole duty of protecting the city and its peoples. I would hate to
00:02:43think that your important tasks would go, shall we say, interrupted, or that you would not have the
00:02:53resources you need to be able to do what you must. We are discussing ways in which certain struggling
00:03:00offices of the Revolutionary Guard can be closed to see those resources better served elsewhere, and
00:03:08in my estimation, there is no group within the city that compares to the arcane marshals. Your services
00:03:14are absolutely necessary and vital for the continued safety of the city.
00:03:18I'm glad to hear that, sir.
00:03:24If there is any use I can be to you, you need only call on me and my house. We would be only too happy to
00:03:31serve. A question, if I may.
00:03:33A question, if I may. Of course.
00:03:35A question, if I may. These offices that you
00:03:37foresee would close.
00:03:42Is there...
00:03:45Whatever little resources have been dedicated to them, what would that mean for those resources if
00:03:49those offices are closed?
00:03:51Those resources would be reassigned to offices of the Revolutionary Guard that are,
00:03:57shall we say, more efficient in their use of those resources.
00:04:01You start?
00:04:02The arcane marshals is extremely effective at a,
00:04:10shall we say, type of safety of the peoples of Dolmachyar that cannot be easily recreated by any other
00:04:17division, whereas gate guardians or Revolutionary Guard patrolmen, those tasks can absolutely be handled by
00:04:27by men-at-arms of the various houses of the Chamber of Lords Advisory.
00:04:35And what role will you play in that?
00:04:36A security overseer.
00:04:39Understood.
00:04:40As a Lord Knight, it would be my honor to join you side by side in keeping this city safe.
00:04:48It will be an honor to work side by side with such an esteemed person.
00:04:57Ah, you see that he snappily salutes a gauntleted hand, bows to you, says,
00:05:03It is important work you are doing here. You have the loyalty and commitment of House Einfassen by your side.
00:05:08I have been studying this man from the second that he has been looking at me,
00:05:18and I smell, I'm just suspicious, of course.
00:05:28How hungry does he look now that he seems to be positioning himself in quite a powerful place?
00:05:37That's what I'm digging for behind his eyes, I suppose.
00:05:41What are you looking for specifically?
00:05:43I'm just looking, there's something about people who are power hungry.
00:05:48Yeah.
00:05:48When they finally pulled enough strings and positioned themselves for this very moment where he just
00:05:53looked at me and said, I'm your new boss.
00:05:55And I just want to see how much pleasure there was behind his eyes,
00:06:00because if there is a hunger there for that kind of power,
00:06:02Yeah. then it's just tasted something very sweet,
00:06:05maybe, and I want to see if I can notice.
00:06:07Give me an insight check.
00:06:13I just critted that.
00:06:14Nat 20!
00:06:16There you go!
00:06:17Yes!
00:06:18Different sundered houses move differently.
00:06:27This guy is coming to you with a tone of
00:06:32respectfulness and zeal and flattery that lets you know that this guy is truly dangerous.
00:06:39The hunger behind his eyes.
00:06:46I think what you see too is there's different, you've talked to power hungry people in the past.
00:06:53Some of them are nakedly contemptuous, some of them are cruel or bilious.
00:06:58You don't see any kind of arch malevolence in this guy.
00:07:02You see a person whose entire core philosophy, rather than being brickwork,
00:07:10is a solid monolithic cube of,
00:07:15of course I should be in charge.
00:07:17Oh.
00:07:20And everything else gets built on top of that.
00:07:27Okay.
00:07:27Lieutenant, Captain, I wish you all the best for a fruitful collaboration in the years to come.
00:07:38And you see his nods, and you see Captain Edrian says,
00:07:41unto you, Lord Knight, thank you very much for your help in this endeavor.
00:07:46And as the Lord leaves, you see Edrian looks over at you.
00:07:50Well, looks like we're all getting bonuses.
00:08:02So long as he finds us useful.
00:08:06I guess the men-at-arms of the House Einfazen don't know how to detect magic with their eyes.
00:08:13Let's hope that stays that way.
00:08:14Well, let's hope it does, because I think they're also visiting the Penteveral today.
00:08:22I'm not surprised.
00:08:23Uh-oh.
00:08:26Uh-oh.
00:08:27Uh-oh.
00:08:29No!
00:08:30Do you?
00:08:31No privatizing government sanctions organizations!
00:08:35No!
00:08:37Which college needs?
00:08:38Okay.
00:08:39No!
00:08:39With that, so much moves through my mind,
00:08:46as I immediately become concerned for some of my friends.
00:08:49Yeah.
00:08:52I go to where the schedule is, basically, and I'm eager to leave him there, kind of spinning on this,
00:09:00because I have other matters that I need to attend to, and I'm going to go to the schedule.
00:09:04Specifically, I'm going to go to where whoever's in charge of where the Crow Keepers area is.
00:09:10Whoever's meant to patrol that area, I'm switching our names so that I'm on that patrol.
00:09:15Hell yeah, gotcha.
00:09:17You switch your names, you get out there, you will be on patrol in Caravan Hill, and with that, you head out.
00:09:22Speaking of the Pentavril.
00:09:26Oh!
00:09:26Hey!
00:09:29A gorgeous series of buildings at the border of the neighborhood of Rosagar, and a place called
00:09:36The Embers, which is the dwarven neighborhood built into the side of the Kavrosi Mountains,
00:09:42that here you see is basically gorgeous red sandstone, and then colorful pink quartz from the sunset
00:09:58mountains, there's alabaster, the Pentavril is a rare bit of color, and there's also plastered and
00:10:04thatched conical towers, or plastered and shingled conical towers.
00:10:10The Pentavril is also much like a campus in a city.
00:10:15It's almost hard to tell you've walked into a college until you're way in it, and you're like,
00:10:20oh, this is, there's people that are getting snacks at this little street cart thing by showing a student
00:10:26badge rather than, you know what I'm saying, so it's like, oh, suddenly, it's almost like a secret
00:10:31college that you just suddenly you're in, noted by many covered sky bridges in that kind of almost
00:10:38tam-o-shantory or like, it's like the white plaster and like the little, the moss covered shingles,
00:10:43they are sky bridges that are only about this big across because they are sky bridges for familiars
00:10:49to walk from building to building. So there's tons of little familiar bridges throughout the different
00:10:54buildings of the Pentavril, and you see all throughout this beautiful little glyph
00:11:02with five sort of stations around it, almost like a pentagram. And you are walking through at Murray,
00:11:11and as you walk through, you see that nearby sort of racing past you is a young gnomish lad who's a
00:11:19grad student. His name is Gallant, and you see he looks over, and he's running by with a bunch of scrolls.
00:11:24He looks like he's sweating and panting. He looks over and goes, Murray.
00:11:27Yeah, what's, what's got, what's going on? They just sacked Tallbarrel.
00:11:34What? Tallbarrel's, he's resigned. They didn't sack him, but they fucking sacked him.
00:11:40They sacked him. Who did? Is this these damn houses? Who was it? Which one? Give me names, boy!
00:11:46I, I, I, I, I, I think Einfoss and Cormorant, Hellevar, Royce, and, and, uh,
00:11:51Did I just palm him and start, like, heading?
00:11:53It's all five! Um, uh, boom, you're out of the way. Um,
00:11:58you rush over, uh, in a beautiful office, appointed with a massive desk,
00:12:07you know, this ancient red wood varnish, uh, with wooden gargoyles. You see there's these, like,
00:12:15two sort of panther heads. They're a little bit more angular, and they have grapes hanging out of their
00:12:20mouths. And up above, you see there are these gorgeous elven muses with flowering plants sort of
00:12:26popping out of the top planter top of their head. You see there's a weird little
00:12:31tooting, steaming gem sort of bubbling in the middle of a beaker's neck as nothing,
00:12:37there's no water, but it just somehow produces steam from air underneath it. On top of this
00:12:42massive desk is a much smaller desk. And at that desk,
00:12:50with a small staircase on the side, uh, is the, uh, the halfling, uh, professor, or sorry,
00:12:56I should say dean, um, uh, illipides tall barrel, um, slightly pointed ears, white curly hair,
00:13:05little white curly sideburns, uh, looks over, little vest, uh, bare feet and britches, looks over,
00:13:13and goes, Murray! What did they do to you? What happened? What did they do to you? Why didn't you stand up to them?
00:13:20What do you mean? This wasn't supposed to happen yet. I just heard the news from Galen that they, that they, that they're,
00:13:25that you got sacked. That you're stepping down. Was it, I,
00:13:31Murray, I'm not. Illipides.
00:13:38I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Murray. I really am. You said, you said we were going to stand up to these greedy ass
00:13:46fucking houses. What did you, what, what are you doing?
00:13:51I no longer believe it is possible to do the work that is necessary to do here in this place.
00:14:02What do you mean? Our work is incredibly important.
00:14:07Of course it is, Murray, of course it is. I know that.
00:14:11But then, if I had tried to fight them, you see, he just shudders and he puts a sort of paper across to you.
00:14:31What's this?
00:14:33It's a letter
00:14:36affirming the decision from the Revolutionary Council
00:14:41to accept the advisement from the Chamber of Lords
00:14:47to revoke the license to cast arcane magic on student grounds here.
00:14:53And they're not going to do it if I resign.
00:15:01They...
00:15:05They prefer Cora.
00:15:07Of course they do.
00:15:09She's one of them.
00:15:10She's not one of them.
00:15:12Okay, well.
00:15:15Heavier the pockets that is the snake, I guess. She might as well be one of them.
00:15:22Sorry, you have a snake in your pockets?
00:15:24No, I'm saying Cora is...
00:15:26She's a snake. She's a dirty, little, greedy, grubby, backhand alley dealmaker.
00:15:32She's got the house.
00:15:33She's in their pockets.
00:15:35So wait, you're trying to say that they're coming in and they're trying to shut down
00:15:48the ability to cast magic at a magic school?
00:15:56That was... that's their angle here? That's what they're trying to do?
00:15:59It was the feeling of the Chamber of Lords advisory to the Revolutionary Council
00:16:04that casting magic is not necessary for the study of wizardry.
00:16:10That is the most batshit thing. You hear it coming out of your...
00:16:15What? If they are going to try and push you out, they might as well have been creative about it.
00:16:19That felt pretty creative to me.
00:16:22You think that's creative?
00:16:26If I stay and they revoke the ability of the Penteveril to practice actual practical magic casting,
00:16:34what happens to the next generation of students?
00:16:40Tall Barrel, I understand. You don't have to explain to me the ramifications. That is deeply clear.
00:16:48I am upset at... I'm upset. And I'm allowed to be upset.
00:16:56If you want the faux talk of the Candescent Creed to walk in here and say that this is how it's going to be,
00:17:02do you want me to say, how about, how do you like these lightning bolts? And shoot her in the face?
00:17:10Shoot her in the face.
00:17:12Kaplow.
00:17:13You're considering it, and that lets me...
00:17:18That would have been epic, yes!
00:17:20Look, all right, I understand. I understand. I just don't understand.
00:17:28It's just this slippery slope that we have all been subjected to trying and climb for the past
00:17:35months, years even, and it's like they're sitting at the top of it with just soap and water,
00:17:43pouring it down this slippery slope until we all just smack onto our faces, bust our teeth out,
00:17:48and go sliding all the way back down to the bottom, right where they want us to be, which is under their
00:17:54big fucking feet. At the bottom of their hill. The analogy got away from me, but you understand what
00:18:00I'm saying, right? I'm still on the snake in the pockets.
00:18:02Wait, there was no snake in the pockets!
00:18:07Murray, I'm...
00:18:09Who's going to go to bat for me?
00:18:12You brought me into this.
00:18:16I was just a shitty little squatter dwarf out in the gutters. You gave me a job. You gave me purpose.
00:18:23This institution was born of scrappy little folks from the gutter, and
00:18:38those original five, the first deans,
00:18:45they were just poets and academics until a couple of little street urchins from the shadows of Dol
00:18:51Makyar said. Well, if these words of creation are written
00:18:57in the foundations of our earth, then let's go find them.
00:19:03It is not lost on me that bravery is the better part of wizardry,
00:19:09but I am not a warrior, and I'm not a politician.
00:19:14I've tried to spend my days studying the craft of magic, and I turned around, and I can speak words that make
00:19:25things that never existed come into being, and I turned around and found that there was a power
00:19:29greater than that, and it was whatever was written in this letter.
00:19:33I'm sorry. I am sorry.
00:19:38It was so well-worded, what you just said, which makes it hurt that much more.
00:19:45Look, you understand what this means, right? This institution that was made and created for those
00:19:53that were willing to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, crack open spines of books,
00:19:58and just work hard. No matter where they came from, or what wealth was bestowed upon them from
00:20:04whatever silver spooned matron that they came from, it's not going to be for them anymore.
00:20:15Just like everything else in this city,
00:20:17we're going to get pushed out of the way for the wealthy, for the noble houses, the sundered houses,
00:20:27and they're going to continue to push and take and take, just like they took the Aussie,
00:20:33and just like they're taking you.
00:20:38I'm sorry.
00:20:41I haven't slept all night, and now my emotions and my hormones are completely
00:20:47unregulated.
00:20:51You see Illipides just with this half-packed bag next to him, looks out and says,
00:20:59I've spent my life looking for answers,
00:21:04and today, my last day at the Penteveril, I'm afraid I have none.
00:21:10Today's your last day?
00:21:13I have to leave.
00:21:13I just give him a big hug.
00:21:19He gives you a big hug.
00:21:21As he does, you hear the noise of boots approaching
00:21:27in the doorway. Shadows grow long,
00:21:32effortless magic.
00:21:35Magic inherited as the shadows lengthen.
00:21:39Marie just cracks her knuckles a little bit, cracks her neck, and then just looks at Tallbarrel.
00:21:48Tallbarrel turns.
00:21:50Smiles.
00:21:50A woman enters the room ahead, a dwarven woman, much like yourself, clean-shaven, platinum blonde hair,
00:22:00Dean's robes looking very official, walks in and says,
00:22:07Dean Tallbarrel, dare you say, someone here to see you, a benefactor and patron.
00:22:15The door darkens, and a tall, grave figure of sallow skin enters the Lord Primus Toconus.
00:22:32I'm looking for my son.
00:22:34I believe he studies at this place.
00:22:43And we're going to leave there, and I will ask everybody at Hal's house to jump on in.
00:22:47Whoa!
00:22:50Big tradesies?
00:22:51Alex, I'm fucking coming for you, man.
00:22:53Bro!
00:22:54Oh no.
00:22:56What did you do to piss off Eddie?
00:22:58That is Primus Toconus.
00:23:00Primus Toconus.
00:23:02Da, da, da, da.
00:23:03Wow.
00:23:04Cool.
00:23:06Cool.
00:23:08I may call people in at a moment's notice, cool?
00:23:12Okay.
00:23:17How hot is your dad?
00:23:19Do we want someone to jump over to the other side, just as we're open?
00:23:22Oh, I'll do it.
00:23:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:23:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:23:24Oh, yeah.
00:23:29Okay.
00:23:30So, the morning of the next day, all of you awaken, and I'll ask, Thimble and Octus,
00:23:41where are you sleeping in the house that night, if you sleep at all?
00:23:45I did, but I fell asleep on Thiazzi, so.
00:23:49Oh.
00:23:50I, like.
00:23:51Falling asleep on Thiazzi, just a small, as you awaken, the small mound of pixie dust that has surrounded you,
00:23:59glowing on his chest.
00:24:04I think I, um, I took whatever room you were, that was available for him to sleep in,
00:24:12but Pin stayed downstairs at the feet of Thiazzi in case Thimble needed anything.
00:24:20Okay.
00:24:22Um, uh, awaken, Hal and Thiazzi, um, I think you guys awaken, um.
00:24:31I would say that, uh, Hal barely slept.
00:24:34Yes.
00:24:35Um, and, um, years ago, when we had children together, obviously we shared the, like, the master bedroom in this place that we built, um, but once you left following your convictions into the world,
00:24:50the room that was your study, your, um, quiet place in the house, um, I continued to tend and kept it full of greenery and put a bed there.
00:25:00And not to say that we haven't, um.
00:25:02Say it.
00:25:04Enjoyed each other's company, uh, on and off throughout the years.
00:25:07It's never assumed, and I've preserved this room for you, and I've barely slept.
00:25:13So I'm coming to this room now to find you.
00:25:17Yeah.
00:25:18Um, by the way, I think, Octus, uh, it probably would have been, like, this room.
00:25:23I think we're used to, like, splitting rooms.
00:25:26So, uh, up incredibly early by the time you leave.
00:25:31Hi.
00:25:31Hi.
00:25:32Good morning.
00:25:33Is he awake?
00:25:34Hi.
00:25:34I'm still asleep.
00:25:35No.
00:25:37No, he'll be up at the crack of noon.
00:25:40Go upstairs.
00:25:41Are you sleeping in the same room as them, or in a different room?
00:25:43I'm sleeping in the same room as Taisha was in this room.
00:25:46I just stayed in whatever room she was in, we're using that.
00:25:49Um, uh, I think there's a moment the night previous when you're like, I'm gonna sleep in the foot of their room,
00:25:55where you see Shadia, who has her whole own room, is like, got it.
00:26:01She's like, she looks at you, and she's like, do I not?
00:26:04I, look, I don't know.
00:26:06I didn't think about this.
00:26:07I wasn't.
00:26:08I thought, he's not necessarily my type, but I just.
00:26:11No, I, I, make a move, girl.
00:26:13Yeah.
00:26:14Make a move.
00:26:14He's weird, but it's fine.
00:26:15I'm not gonna make a move.
00:26:16Do something.
00:26:17He's like your, is he your protege?
00:26:20No, I didn't, I work, I work with him.
00:26:24A little, not that much.
00:26:26Okay.
00:26:27He's never had sex.
00:26:29That's an overshot.
00:26:33Up to the roof of this place, where you can look out over all of the neighborhood of the Rookery.
00:26:39Yeah.
00:26:41And the sun is just barely coming up, and there are magpies sort of warbling to each other
00:26:47from different rooftops up here.
00:26:49Did you sleep?
00:26:50No.
00:26:51No.
00:26:52No.
00:26:53No.
00:26:54No.
00:26:55God, how are you?
00:26:57There's a lot to do today.
00:26:59I, okay, you look great, terrible.
00:27:04I'm gonna, I, I'll, I'll take care of it.
00:27:09Oh, let me take care of it, please.
00:27:10I am glad you are here.
00:27:13I'm glad you're here.
00:27:18I've been anxious for, since it happened, terrified that someone in his orbit was going to
00:27:26try some harebrained scheme to pull him out of that spot, and including you.
00:27:33Yeah, you weren't inaccurate.
00:27:35Right, right.
00:27:36And I, I, I didn't want my brother to be a refugee, and never see him again, and I was convinced,
00:27:43convinced that I could handle back channels.
00:27:46I had Arnessa, I had the, the Haliver boy as a failsafe, and it all failed, and I'm a fool.
00:27:54You're not a fool. You are hopeful, and that's not a bad thing. We were the fallback mechanism if
00:28:04all else failed. The glyph was supposed to fire, and we would get him out, and
00:28:11better alive, and in the world, and gone, but.
00:28:16I couldn't even talk at all yesterday, and had a thousand thoughts rattling around inside my head,
00:28:25and there were just too many people, and for every person in the house who was there to pay respects,
00:28:29and missed my brother, it seemed like there was another person with an axe to grind,
00:28:33and I don't know who to trust, other than you.
00:28:38Love, to be clear, there were maybe a handful of people who had a word of truly bad things to say
00:28:52about your brother. I don't know why Julian showed his face,
00:28:57but everyone else there knew him, and loved him, and I'm sorry, I will just keep rambling.
00:29:13You know, I was in the crowd, and Azune made it so that he and I could talk.
00:29:27So to speak. A little.
00:29:32And he, I'm going to break all these chairs.
00:29:38He saw something at the final moments out over the crowd. I don't know, I don't even know what I
00:29:45mean. He saw something, and then he spoke in a fever to me. He told me
00:29:52that I need to be looking out for Marais the Pentevril. He told me that
00:30:01Belair has paints waiting in. He wants me to look after
00:30:07Thimble, I would have done that anyway.
00:30:08Of course.
00:30:09There's a lot to figure out, and I don't like the way the wind is blowing in this city, and I
00:30:17certainly don't like it that trouble has washed up at our children's feet.
00:30:22Yeah.
00:30:25I don't know where to start.
00:30:26We start with the things that we know we can do.
00:30:34Let's put your brother to rest.
00:30:36And figure out what happened.
00:30:41Thimble was jumped by a bunch of
00:30:45Crowkeepers, or people trying to pin their actions on the Crowkeepers.
00:30:50We follow a clue, and look, Yazzie had a lot of irons in the fire at all times.
00:31:03It'll take years to unpack everything he was doing, but it's not on here to figure it all out right now.
00:31:13Ty, do you know what he was doing with that box?
00:31:20I wish I was the kind of person that asked more questions, but I trusted him.
00:31:34I told him I was on my way to Venatus.
00:31:38I asked him if he needed me to pick up anything for him, and that was the request.
00:31:43I spent weeks walking back with Octus,
00:31:50threatening him and cajoling him and begging him not to open that box, and then I'm the one that did it.
00:31:55I brought danger into your house.
00:32:05I'm sorry.
00:32:09Danger has chased my brother around his entire life.
00:32:13Or I got that backwards.
00:32:15But we've always worked so hard to keep it as far from you as possible.
00:32:25Well, we've got a lot to figure out, a lot of people to talk to.
00:32:30Yeah.
00:32:32Peel off a little time for Shadi today.
00:32:34Yeah, she seems mad at her.
00:32:46I understand.
00:32:47To spend time.
00:32:50That's all she wants.
00:32:50Yeah.
00:32:54You and Hiro playing that song last night.
00:32:56It made me miss all of the things I missed so much.
00:33:04But every time I hear you play or I hear your stories,
00:33:11it becomes so clear how important it is to fix this world.
00:33:17Our people, our parents' parents.
00:33:24We started a war that freed us and threw the rest of the world into chaos.
00:33:30We owe it to the world to fix what we can.
00:33:35We do what we do.
00:33:35Yeah.
00:33:37One page at a time.
00:33:41Yeah.
00:33:42Yeah.
00:33:43Let's go look after our house guests.
00:33:44Okay, okay.
00:33:47Downstairs, Thimble, you awaken.
00:33:57The Aussie.
00:33:59You have a moment here in the morning,
00:34:04and this bad dream doesn't go away.
00:34:09I look at my handiwork from last night,
00:34:14and I had spent the night after everybody else
00:34:16and gone to bed.
00:34:17Mm-hmm.
00:34:19Arranging his clothes perfectly,
00:34:21and I braided a couple locks of his hair
00:34:24and made it lay out.
00:34:26He looks pristine.
00:34:33I took a couple of the treasures people left for him.
00:34:38He would have wanted it to go to use.
00:34:40And I set pixie dust all around him so he glows.
00:34:55He's golden.
00:34:55I'm going to find you did this.
00:35:09As you whisper that promise,
00:35:13the pixie dust ripples with light.
00:35:17A promise from a fairy is no small thing,
00:35:21even from a fairy so small.
00:35:27At the door, you hear the rasping of claws on wood,
00:35:32and at the little window,
00:35:34a wolf's head pops up and looks inside.
00:35:37Robbie, you want to come out?
00:35:38What is this wolf's goddamn vibe?
00:35:49Have you seen the scariest guy or a good boy?
00:35:51I cannot tell.
00:35:52All right.
00:35:54Wait, wait, you don't need to scooch.
00:35:56No, you just need to scooch, Alex.
00:35:57I'm sorry.
00:35:58We can all scooch together.
00:35:59There's no one on the table.
00:36:04Cadigan arrives at Howl's house.
00:36:06So the wolf's head pops up in the window, you say?
00:36:10Yeah.
00:36:11Yeah, he just sort of
00:36:13and sort of mausles the windowsill open a little bit,
00:36:17and then slinks inside.
00:36:20And then I imagine it's sort of a step up,
00:36:23if there's like a brownstone, like there's steps up.
00:36:26So all you see are two bandaged hands
00:36:29grab onto the windowsill and you go,
00:36:30oh, fuck, ow, ow.
00:36:33He's got like a little splinter,
00:36:35and Cadigan just boosts himself up into the windowsill.
00:36:38I fly up to the windowsill as your head pops up.
00:36:42You know, there is a door.
00:36:44Oh, yeah.
00:36:45Sorry, I just followed the dog.
00:36:47You still smell like alcohol.
00:36:50Then I burp and it smells more like alcohol.
00:36:52That envelops me.
00:36:56He slings himself into the room.
00:36:58Fly backwards.
00:36:59Hello.
00:36:59How are you?
00:37:01Hi.
00:37:01Good morning.
00:37:02What?
00:37:03There's a door.
00:37:04Sorry, sorry.
00:37:06Hair of the dog for you and the dog.
00:37:09One sec.
00:37:10I go and I bring out
00:37:14shepherd's pie from the kitchen and some ale
00:37:19and just set it out.
00:37:21If it's wanted.
00:37:22Do you want to drink more or not be?
00:37:27And he just starts eating the shepherd's pie
00:37:29with his hand.
00:37:30No silverware.
00:37:31Just kind of scooping it in his mouth.
00:37:33Daddy, honey, have you been?
00:37:34He's scooping it down to the dog at the same time.
00:37:36Dog's eating out of his hand
00:37:38and he's going right back into the pot.
00:37:39Just sort of looking at everyone.
00:37:42You've been inside around people, yeah?
00:37:45He didn't raise you?
00:37:46I love people, I love people.
00:37:47Great.
00:37:48Okay.
00:37:50There's a glass drawer of honey down on the same table.
00:37:53Octas wasn't asleep.
00:37:54He couldn't hear either of you
00:37:56because his consciousness was inside Pinn downstairs
00:37:59the All Might.
00:38:01So as soon as this starts happening,
00:38:03he cancels it and comes down and sees you eating
00:38:07and just goes,
00:38:09Lord, what a way to eat.
00:38:11Yeah.
00:38:13Oh.
00:38:13Pie's gone.
00:38:15That was so fast.
00:38:17Good morning.
00:38:17Do you want more?
00:38:19Sure, that'd be, thank you.
00:38:20Yes.
00:38:21I got it, I got it, I got it.
00:38:23And you see that there is a fundamental tension in Taisha
00:38:27that's like, need a thing to do
00:38:29and just starts buzzing around the house.
00:38:32Speaking of buzzing, are you airborne or are you?
00:38:35Yeah, Wilfrick is just sort of like,
00:38:38not nipping at you, but you know how a dog gets interested
00:38:40in something in the sky, a fly or anything?
00:38:42He's just sort of got you tracked
00:38:44and he's bopping around.
00:38:45And I'm tracking him the entire time.
00:38:47Yeah, yeah.
00:38:48Keeping up just high enough out of his range.
00:38:50It's definitely not that playful.
00:38:53Yeah, no, I can tell.
00:38:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:38:57Thimble, you know that it's, you know,
00:39:00the funeral went late.
00:39:03The amount of time it'll take to get to Caravan Hill,
00:39:07you know that the tavern will be open
00:39:11and the Crowkeepers will probably be present
00:39:13by the time you get there.
00:39:14We gotta get going.
00:39:16Going where?
00:39:18I'm in head of the Crowkeepers.
00:39:19Oh, Crowkeepers.
00:39:22You ever dealt with them before?
00:39:24Of course I have, have you?
00:39:25Well, so much attitude.
00:39:27I don't know what we're doing.
00:39:29I'm sorry, we didn't even speak last night.
00:39:31Did you leave something here?
00:39:32No, no, I just.
00:39:36Oh yeah, I didn't ask.
00:39:37As I come out bringing you more food.
00:39:39Why are you here?
00:39:40It's fine.
00:39:41Do you?
00:39:42Oh, sweetie, I got you.
00:39:43I'm sorry.
00:39:44You're okay.
00:39:45Cadigan, are you?
00:39:45Hmm?
00:39:48Oh.
00:39:49Are you gonna help?
00:39:50Yeah, I think so.
00:39:54Oh.
00:39:55Oh.
00:39:55It depends on what we're doing, I suppose.
00:39:57He looks creepy as hell.
00:39:59He's perfect for this.
00:40:00Yeah.
00:40:01You want to come with me?
00:40:03I need backup.
00:40:04Fantastic.
00:40:05Oh, is there any, I'll save it.
00:40:08And he looks at the ale for a minute.
00:40:13And the minute turns into a real minute.
00:40:17And then he unlocks and leaves it sit.
00:40:20And then, so I'm sorry, I missed a little bit last night.
00:40:26I just remember you, and you're Thiazzi's brother.
00:40:32I see it.
00:40:33Yeah.
00:40:37You served together.
00:40:39Oh, is this a broad term for a band of mercenaries?
00:40:42Fought with each other.
00:40:43Fought near each other.
00:40:43Fought shoulder to shoulder.
00:40:46He was a bit more like a non-commissioned officer.
00:40:48And I was more like in the trenches,
00:40:51fucking it up, if you know what I mean.
00:40:52But he's a good guy all along.
00:40:54I'm sorry, by the way.
00:40:56I didn't get a chance to properly pay my respects.
00:40:58It was a busy night.
00:40:59Yeah.
00:41:00Yes, it was.
00:41:01Well, he's still right there if you want to, Kat.
00:41:03Oh, yeah.
00:41:03And I'm gonna walk up to him, and I'm gonna look at him.
00:41:06And as he's resting and dead, I think Katigan's seen a lot of death in all of its forms.
00:41:15And when you see a person lying in repose, they have a resting face.
00:41:19And Thiazzi's, to me, looks mischievous still, as I remember him in my youth.
00:41:26And then, uh, while nobody's looking, just out of curiosity, I'm gonna say,
00:41:32I'm gonna grab a little pinch and a little flick to where no one can see it.
00:41:39And I just want to cast really quick, just to check, Spare the Dying.
00:41:46Because I figure if there's one last gambit he might have in his pocket,
00:41:50it could be that he's not really dead, just to check.
00:41:55You cast Spare the Dying here.
00:41:58Give me insight in this moment.
00:42:00Like an insight check?
00:42:03An insight check.
00:42:04Okay.
00:42:04He's been alive this whole time.
00:42:06Gotcha.
00:42:07Look.
00:42:08Now imagine if you called that year.
00:42:10Yeah.
00:42:10What was that, what'd you roll?
00:42:11It's a dirty 20.
00:42:12Dirty 20.
00:42:13You look, Spare the Dying, you cast it.
00:42:21You do not feel the spell take hold, as it has in the past, perhaps on Thiazzi himself.
00:42:26You wonder if that mischievous half grin on his face is that the trick he's smiling at
00:42:38is that the life he lived led you to believe he might be fooling even about this.
00:42:44I think Cadigan looking at his body here, he is golden, gleaming, surrounded by treasures from the
00:42:54many lives he lived.
00:42:56It is not an exaggeration to say in the lives of mortals, though he had so much more time left,
00:43:09this is the best you can hope for, to be left like this.
00:43:15Yeah, I looked at him and just quietly to himself saying,
00:43:22yeah, it's too bad.
00:43:27Well,
00:43:31let's get after it then.
00:43:32While he was talking to him, I'm just gonna be
00:43:37flying next to Octus.
00:43:38Can you come?
00:43:44Or is that stupid?
00:43:46No, you mean to,
00:43:50yes, yes, I can come with you, yeah.
00:43:56Will you get in trouble?
00:43:57I mean, I don't know how in with your fam you still are, I don't.
00:44:00Right, I haven't even, oh god.
00:44:02I can make myself look different.
00:44:10Yeah?
00:44:10And hopefully that'll work.
00:44:12Yeah, no, I'm, I'm, I'm coming with you.
00:44:15Okay.
00:44:16Yeah.
00:44:18We gotta go.
00:44:19Thimble, you look, Cadigan's been with you, Octus is coming with you.
00:44:25I think I'm better served
00:44:29finding Murray and Azunei.
00:44:31Oh fuck, Murray, uh, wait, Belair, the letter.
00:44:36And I go fly down and I give it to you.
00:44:38Hal, this has to get to them.
00:44:40Oh, all right.
00:44:40To Belair, right?
00:44:41Or to Murray, yeah.
00:44:42It's a matter.
00:44:43Murray, you know what I mean.
00:44:44Bah!
00:44:45It says Murray on it.
00:44:46Okay, I'll run to Murray.
00:44:50There's a letter that says Belair on it,
00:44:52that the letter says Belair,
00:44:54and Thimble is saying, this is for Murray.
00:44:58Yep, that tracks for the last 24 hours, I'm on it.
00:45:01He had a present for you.
00:45:04Did you get it?
00:45:06I, yes.
00:45:09Yes.
00:45:10Okay.
00:45:10Are you gonna use it?
00:45:14Give me one hour a week.
00:45:16Um, be careful.
00:45:21I'm always careful.
00:45:23Are you, though?
00:45:24Um, listen, I know I'm not my brother,
00:45:32and I'm no replacement for my brother,
00:45:34but I know how much you meant to each other,
00:45:37and as far as I'm concerned, your family.
00:45:38I know how much you're doing.
00:45:40So if you ever need somewhere to go, it's here.
00:45:45And, um,
00:45:49I was able to talk to him at the end.
00:45:52Are you bullshitting me?
00:45:53Because Azuna said the same shit.
00:45:57And then he said he was lying, so.
00:45:59I'm not bullshitting you.
00:46:00Okay.
00:46:01What'd he say?
00:46:08He said to tell you not to be afraid.
00:46:09And I didn't need him to tell me that he thought the world of you.
00:46:23And, therefore, so do I.
00:46:27He was always so stupid.
00:46:28Yes, he was.
00:46:29I'm never afraid.
00:46:37Thimble, do you want me to?
00:46:40Do you want me to come with you,
00:46:41or are you good with a pair of spooky boys?
00:46:45We got this.
00:46:46We got this.
00:46:47What don't we?
00:46:48Don't we, Wolfric?
00:46:48He's a good boy.
00:46:49I don't know if you need to be in with the thieves.
00:46:52Taisha.
00:46:54You're respectable.
00:46:57Who's that?
00:46:58True?
00:46:58I don't know.
00:46:59What context?
00:47:02I respect you.
00:47:04I respect you, too.
00:47:06You didn't tell me you were respectable.
00:47:08Okay, come on.
00:47:09Come on, yeah.
00:47:13As Taisha and Hal remain here at home with their daughter,
00:47:19Thimble, you head out with Cadogan and Octus.
00:47:23Disguise self.
00:47:25Before we leave the house.
00:47:27Look shady.
00:47:29Shadier than you already look.
00:47:30I don't look shady.
00:47:35I make myself look very much realizing who I'm with.
00:47:41An approximation of someone who looks like Cadogan.
00:47:44I'm just nudging the shit out of Shadier like, huh?
00:47:49You see that Shadier goes,
00:47:54It's nice to meet you.
00:47:56Nice to meet you, too.
00:47:59Nice to meet you, too.
00:48:00That's good, that's good.
00:48:01Wow.
00:48:02That's good.
00:48:03Can you make yourself stink like him?
00:48:03Is that your real, yeah.
00:48:06It's a musk.
00:48:09I feel like that's a waste of magic.
00:48:12As you head up, let me know how long disguise self lasts.
00:48:14In less than an hour.
00:48:15I will need to duck away at some point to refresh it.
00:48:18Yes, so you go ahead.
00:48:19I think you get there on a second casting.
00:48:22Yeah, got it.
00:48:23You'll get far enough in the city that you arrive there.
00:48:25Thimble, as you head out through the city,
00:48:29you see it before you.
00:48:31There is a
00:48:35tavern, a sign, no letters on it,
00:48:38but a sign with just a scratched picture
00:48:41of a tall stone masonry tower.
00:48:46See, this is in Caravan Hill.
00:48:48Caravan Hill is one of the lower neighborhoods of the city,
00:48:51so named because this is where all
00:48:53of the goods and wealth of Cahad,
00:48:56all that orcish food and produce and wealth
00:49:00and abundance goes funneling out into the rest of Passatar.
00:49:05You see that there is a,
00:49:10so there's merchant caravans and wagons and everything
00:49:13heading up to Sir Ogrammock's Market,
00:49:15and the tavern sign swings.
00:49:19There's a sputtering torchlight.
00:49:20As you enter, it's always like a late morning tavern,
00:49:25always has a vibe, sort of like the circus just left.
00:49:32It's a, it's a, from a guy who used to do opening work at a lot of bars.
00:49:37It's a tough, it's a tough vibe.
00:49:40Yeah.
00:49:41As you approach and enter,
00:49:44you walk in, and sort of right in this little hallway that leads out to the main,
00:49:48kind of where the bar is, and there's circular tables around the sputtering torchlight.
00:49:53Even, like, Dolmachiar is gray enough that, like, some places in some neighborhoods need to burn
00:49:57torches during the day even to have enough, like, light to see and do things.
00:50:02Uh, you walk in, and you see that there's two kind of, like,
00:50:09wiry-looking, uh, human sort of, you know,
00:50:16I think you see a couple of crow feathers on a twine earring,
00:50:19and another one's got some crow feathers on the inside of a hood.
00:50:21As you walk in, smile.
00:50:26Hello?
00:50:29Welcome. Looking for a drink?
00:50:31I'm looking for any bit of recognition in any of their eyes from me.
00:50:38I'm looking for somebody that looks like they might have been in that room.
00:50:47You don't see any from this person.
00:50:48Or are you here to speak with somebody?
00:50:54Yeah.
00:50:55I fly down and get close to them.
00:50:59Where's Kaz?
00:51:04Where's Kaz?
00:51:05You hear a voice from inside say,
00:51:09Send her in.
00:51:12In the bar, wearing a sort of
00:51:15brimmed, double-ridged hat,
00:51:21black felt, long black coat,
00:51:24thin silver chain.
00:51:25It's an older figure.
00:51:27You would recognize this as a gentleman.
00:51:30You don't know if it's his name, but people call him Solomon.
00:51:37You.
00:51:41Thimble.
00:51:42Is that right?
00:51:43So.
00:51:44Good to see you, my friend.
00:51:45You too.
00:51:47Who are you looking for?
00:51:53I'm looking for Kazimir.
00:51:55Has he been around?
00:51:57The last few days?
00:51:59Last day?
00:52:02Give me a persuasion check.
00:52:04Let's fucking go, Tinker Hell.
00:52:05Shh!
00:52:06Shh!
00:52:09Ooh, that ain't good.
00:52:10That ain't good at all.
00:52:10That's a five.
00:52:12Hey, Laura.
00:52:14Roll initiative.
00:52:17And we're going to say goodbye to you.
00:52:19Actually, give me three initiative rolls right here.
00:52:21I'm going to mark them down.
00:52:23Shit.
00:52:23Oh, I'm going to give you a big one.
00:52:25Don't want to give you a big one.
00:52:25Don't want to give you a big one.
00:52:27I bet they won't get it.
00:52:28Okay.
00:52:2925.
00:52:3025 for Thimble.
00:52:33Okay, 25 for Thimble.
00:52:34Damn!
00:52:35That is 21.
00:52:37Oh my god, come on.
00:52:3821 for Octus.
00:52:40What did we get here?
00:52:40I'm just lollygagging by the ball.
00:52:42I got a 12.
00:52:4312?
00:52:4412 for Cadigan?
00:52:46Hell yeah!
00:52:48Thimble, these people are not creative.
00:52:51And as many times before,
00:52:53you hear the whistling right behind you
00:52:56of someone with a burlap sack.
00:52:58And that's where we're going to say goodbye!
00:52:59Oh no!
00:53:01Oh no!
00:53:02Oh no!
00:53:03See you guys next time!
00:53:04Can we get Sam and Whitney out here?
00:53:07Okay.
00:53:07Nope.
00:53:08Yeah.
00:53:09Everybody else vacate, right?
00:53:10Everybody else vacate.
00:53:11Bye bye!
00:53:12Yeah, bye!
00:53:13That was close.
00:53:14Let's go.
00:53:16Almost first combat.
00:53:18That's so close!
00:53:20Hal and Tysha are just making breakfast.
00:53:22Yeah.
00:53:23That's it.
00:53:23That's its own kind of combat.
00:53:24Yeah.
00:53:25Great.
00:53:27Bye.
00:53:27Bye bye.
00:53:29Bye bye.
00:53:31Great.
00:53:39I love it.
00:53:40I love it.
00:53:40Good boy.
00:53:41Good boy.
00:53:42Should we be on different?
00:53:44Should we? Do you want to be?
00:53:45Should we?
00:53:51Having been watered and fed,
00:53:55Teor Pridesire has been ushered out of the Via Aurora,
00:54:00and after much business,
00:54:04dealing with a quick meeting with House Einfassen
00:54:08and some comings and goings.
00:54:10Sam, what do you think Wickandre would get up to
00:54:13in a normal day after having signed up for Teor
00:54:16to maybe begin to be your assigned bodyguard,
00:54:19this holy man?
00:54:20But just in a normal day,
00:54:21what do you think you would get up to?
00:54:22Oh, well, in a normal day,
00:54:26I would, this isn't a normal day.
00:54:30Or on this day, what do you think you'd get up to?
00:54:31Yeah.
00:54:31In a normal day, I think I would,
00:54:36I have duties.
00:54:37I have things to take care of at the various temples,
00:54:43and there is the matter of that shipment of filament
00:54:48that was outside, this glowing liquid
00:54:51that was sort of being jostled around.
00:54:54I want to make sure that that is being cared for
00:54:59and delivered to the right place.
00:55:02And there's always the teaching of Tyranny
00:55:04and making sure that she is being brought to the light
00:55:11and making sure that she is doing her studies.
00:55:17I don't know if she's with me now or not.
00:55:18I believe she is.
00:55:19Okay, yes.
00:55:20After a long day dealing with the accident,
00:55:24there is a knock at your study door as the sun begins to set.
00:55:27Maybe I'm in the middle of explaining to her.
00:55:30As you know, the Candacean Creed believes
00:55:33that the universe is a river of light,
00:55:35and we are but vessels riding in this river.
00:55:40We have solved the ancient secrets, though,
00:55:42and we can distill the light energy into liquid filament,
00:55:47and that filament can be used in rituals and...
00:55:51How?
00:55:53It's very crucial to our faith that that filament can be used
00:55:58to empower people, to cast magic.
00:56:02So you don't know?
00:56:03I don't know exactly how it works,
00:56:06but I do know that that filament can even be ingested by people.
00:56:10Why, you see the markings on my face,
00:56:12these beautiful glowing tattoos are actually pure filament.
00:56:16That's the bottled down essence of the universe tattooed on my face.
00:56:21But you don't know what it is or where it comes from?
00:56:25Yes, I do. It is part of the universe.
00:56:26It is the candescence that we all exist within and without us.
00:56:30It makes the universe, and we are carried along its current.
00:56:35And many say that we can sip of it from the great radiant chalice.
00:56:40Yes.
00:56:41Okay, I understand.
00:56:42Um, let me ask you something.
00:56:44What did you think about that Teor guy?
00:56:46Oh, he was very strong.
00:56:49He was really strong, yeah.
00:56:51Yes, and sort of had a swagger about him, don't you think?
00:56:56Yeah, yeah.
00:56:57Sort of confidence.
00:56:58Well, let's stay pure.
00:56:59Of course, you're right.
00:57:01Uh...
00:57:02He seemed to wield the light without even knowing how or what it is, which is rare.
00:57:09Impressive, really.
00:57:10And you trust him?
00:57:15Well, I did, but then my grandmother said to sort of get rid of him.
00:57:20I don't know what that means.
00:57:21Your grandma said to get rid of him?
00:57:22I don't know if that means usher him out or kill him.
00:57:26I can't kill him.
00:57:27You can't kill him.
00:57:27No, I can't kill him.
00:57:29No, but could you if push came to shove?
00:57:32I mean, yeah, I think so, but I don't think I should.
00:57:38No, I don't want to.
00:57:39It's not my job to be up on the politics of your stuff.
00:57:43Of course not, but you know, if the Photarch commanded us to, I suppose we'd have no other choice.
00:57:52Yeah, I don't want to do that.
00:57:54I don't want to do that, either.
00:57:56Oh, yes, yes, go by the door, please.
00:58:00The door opens.
00:58:02Your father, and behind him, Aspirin and Middy, these two towering figures appear.
00:58:10Your father, again blindfolded, looks to you.
00:58:15Wickenda, come, and turns to begin to walk away.
00:58:21You should be present for all official, what if I need protection, yes.
00:58:32Yes, yes, yes, father.
00:58:34We'll join along.
00:58:36I want to sidebar with Enmody really quick.
00:58:40I just get up, clomp right up next to her and say,
00:58:44Enmody, what's going on?
00:58:49The Photarch has made a decision.
00:58:54You won't have to keep any terrible little secrets for much longer.
00:59:00You, by the way, Enmody is committing a dimming in this moment by speaking in the language of demons,
00:59:10so that you don't understand that last part.
00:59:12Did I?
00:59:12You heard a little demonic, yeah.
00:59:14All right, I shoot them a little bit of a side-eye.
00:59:21You see Goddard, your father, says,
00:59:23Don, and points to the staircase.
00:59:26Right away, follow.
00:59:28You begin to walk, Enmody speaking, rather than your father, just goes,
00:59:34My lord Wickenda, your father is gleeful and merry beyond measure.
00:59:43I can tell, yes.
00:59:45To show you the inner workings of the prismatic retort.
00:59:50Oh, oh, by the beam, the inner workings,
00:59:57The prismatic retort is what we use to change light energy,
01:00:06distill it from the cosmos into liquid form, into liquid filament.
01:00:10Its mysteries are unknown.
01:00:15If this is true, this could be my promotion.
01:00:19This could be the moment I reveal the secrets.
01:00:25Yes, your radiance.
01:00:28I mean, I know you're being humble and demure, because that's what you should be, but you could be a little happy.
01:00:34You approach at the bottom of the staircase, going down farther. This is now deep in the rock,
01:00:44underneath the Via Aurora, a massive set of stone double doors, the symbol of the Candescent Creed on them.
01:00:54You can see there's writing, however, here in Celestial, ancient Obra Demian,
01:01:01this lost runes of this empire of fallen worshipers of Tan-sul, god of the sun.
01:01:10The letters don't reference him, but you recognize them as part of that ancient alphabet.
01:01:15But of course, Tan-sul was a false god, so doors begin to crack open,
01:01:24and a beam of light moves through and quickly diminishes. You see within, chained to either side of the wall,
01:01:35are enormous war hounds. You see that each of them, their slavering drool glowing bioluminescently as they,
01:01:48. You see that each of them barks, and as they do,
01:01:56you see that you feel a pulse of some innate spell from them, and you feel, not harming anything,
01:02:04but dispel magic cast over you. Do I know these creatures?
01:02:10They look maybe of a similar kind to your Uncle Felonius's. He has got some war dogs, but
01:02:17these ones are much bigger, and you see that each of them... Do not be afraid.
01:02:23Thank you. My eyes are locked on Wick, and also occasionally staring daggers at enmity.
01:02:31You look at the word house, and as you look over
01:02:35their eyes, you see that there are golden plates affixed over their eyes, solid.
01:02:42As you walk forward, another set of doors opens. Have I ever been this far deep now?
01:02:52This is all brand new. Oh my goodness.
01:02:58The fourth tenet of the Seven Shining Tenets. The beam is only seen by the anointed. The sacred glyphs
01:03:03shimmer only to the Family of Flame. They will be revealed to me tonight.
01:03:07Hey, can I say something really quick before we go further, please?
01:03:10Yes, but make it quick.
01:03:12Yeah, I just wanted to say that I know I haven't been really easy to work with
01:03:16these past couple months, and I'm really sorry about that.
01:03:22Oh, thank you. Thank you for that. You've made great progress, and I'm proud of what you've
01:03:31accomplished. You can't wait for more.
01:03:35Wickie! You see the faux tark is down here. You see that she's dressed not in sort of like outer
01:03:44regalia, but like a simple sort of white gown. She looks like she's very comfortable down here.
01:03:51She smiles and says, oh, my little lovey, it's good to see you. Hello, Tiffany. Welcome.
01:03:57Behold. Candles light in this almost cathedral-esque basement, like a windowless cathedral here in the
01:04:07basin, and you see that there is an enormous stone sarcophagus that is set in with these massive,
01:04:21fibrous, what look like, almost like massive ropes or threads coming off of it, but you see that they
01:04:31are shuddering and gleaming bright. The sarcophagus is pitched up. It is easily 40 feet tall overhead.
01:04:44Stones and sigils carved throughout it.
01:04:46You see that Goddard is walking over and twisting these places where these essentially fibrous tubes
01:04:56plunge into the sarcophagus and tightening them up. As he does, you see his hands are smoking a little
01:05:01bit. Yanesa looks at you and says, Wickenda, there's no two ways about it.
01:05:09The love I hold for you is as true as the foundations of the earth, and I need you to know that because
01:05:26that love is true. However, some of the things I have told you in your life have not been true,
01:05:41and so I suspect that there may be some points where you feel
01:05:48rattled, unsure, your legs taken out from under you. You see a tiny, papery old hand touches your cheek.
01:06:01So the thing I need you to hold on to when everything else goes away is I love you.
01:06:10I love you too, grandmother.
01:06:11Your ability to wield the light is a gift from the cosmos itself, yes.
01:06:27We all must carry the light as clerics of the Candescent Creed.
01:06:34It's less a gift of the cosmos than it is a gift of our family, and it's less from any given creed
01:06:49than it is from... Faith? Belief?
01:06:57Goodness. Justice.
01:07:01Goddard, open the retort.
01:07:04The machine. This is the machine that distills the light into filament.
01:07:10As you wish, mother.
01:07:14Goddard goes to undo his blindfold, takes it off.
01:07:22Beams of light emerge unbidden from his lidless eyes as two beams of light funnel into the base of the
01:07:32the prismatic retort.
01:07:33The runes of the sarcophagus alight, and they begin to open.
01:07:50Give both of you, I need a strength saving throw.
01:07:54Oh, sure, that's what we do.
01:07:58Hey, pretty good.
01:08:0130, 20.
01:08:0115.
01:08:0215.
01:08:05Tyranny, you stand strong.
01:08:08Wickander, you are thrown back 10 feet.
01:08:10Sure.
01:08:13Oh.
01:08:13It's all right, I can see better back here.
01:08:17I go and I, um, hold on, it's okay, it's okay.
01:08:20You're welcome.
01:08:21You look up, and as your eyes adjust, you see your father kneeling, reasserting,
01:08:28and re-fixing the blindfold on his face, as the retort opens, gleaming light.
01:08:35This is not a sarcophagus, it's an Iron Maiden, and within it is a 30-foot-tall angel chained
01:08:49with taps like that that removes the sap from maple trees, gushing blood out as the angel chained
01:09:01with its head against the inner workings, its featherless wings spread out and splayed against
01:09:06the inside of the machine, roars out like a screaming titan.
01:09:15As rows and rows of un-pointed teeth within its mouth gnash furiously, it blasts forth bilious,
01:09:26gleaming blood over its shining body, claws and feet reaching forward against the chains,
01:09:36Ynessa turns to you.
01:09:38Wiki, I'd like you to meet your grandfather.
01:09:43That's all for this episode of Critical Role.
01:09:47Wait, no, no, no, go.
01:09:51And we'll see you next week.
01:09:52No, no, no, don't cut.
