00:58Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Sophie Fernanda from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:03We'll begin with the news, stay with us!
01:06In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro offered a balance of the base assemblies ahead of the constituent Congress of the Working Class,
01:22where he highlighted the workers' living role in the construction of the nation.
01:26During the balance section, the head of state Nicolás Maduro emphasized that more than 10,000 base assemblies of the labor movement has been held,
01:35and more than 30,000 delegates have been elected.
01:38On the other hand, the head of state highlighted that the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC,
01:44projects and economic growth of 6% of Venezuela's GDPD,
01:48which reaffirms the sovereignty and strength of the country's real economy,
01:52despite the blockade and aggression by the U.S. government.
02:03It creates solutions, it creates proposals,
02:06and it is a vital force in the new economy of the 13 engines that the country is driving forward.
02:12This year, Oxford Economics and CELIC are projecting economic growth of 6% of the country's real gross domestic product.
02:26Economists call it gross domestic product.
02:29Not because it is gross, the product, but because it is internal to the global economy,
02:39when one speaks of the concept of gross domestic product, one is speaking of the entire economy.
02:46Last year it grew by 9%.
02:52We have had 18 consecutive quarters, 18 consecutive quarters of growth.
02:58The Venezuelan president also announced that the Bolivarian nation has increased its gas production,
03:05and reaffirmed that the first export of that industry to Colombia is ready.
03:10To increase gas production.
03:15We are making so much progress in the production of gas that the first export to Colombia is ready,
03:20it's at the border waiting for some technical issues to be solved,
03:23so that Venezuela can begin selling gas to Colombia.
03:27Keep that secret for me too.
03:29The gas is ready at the border to be sent to Colombia.
03:35Some technical and economic elements are still needed, and then the gas will be ready to go,
03:41that will be our first shipment of gas, and then we won't stop because Colombia and Venezuela must be united,
03:47increasingly united in an increasingly integrated and prosperous economy.
03:54With a growing trade, as we already have with our growing bi-national investments.
03:59Venezuela and Colombia must be united in Bolivar's idea of emancipation, freedom, peace,
04:06and mutual respect between governments and peoples.
04:10Caracas is known for its dynamism, its rhythms, its flavors, and of course,
04:32for its iconic transportation system, the metro.
04:35Next, our correspondent Andrea Jaramera will show us a place that has transformed the routine,
04:39of those who travel on this means of transport into a unique gastronomic experience.
04:44At Estación Arepa, they don't just serve arepas. Each arepa comes with a creative and innovative touch.
04:55The concept for this restaurant is an innovation, paying tribute to our main mode of transport here in Venezuela.
05:05The Caracas Metro, the number one transport for all Venezuelans, used by so many to get to work.
05:18With this new location, we're bringing a new homage to our main public transport.
05:24But this restaurant is not just an homage to the metro. It also reinvents the classic Venezuelan dish, arepa.
05:34How do they mix tradition and creativity?
05:37For example, the arepas are named after stations.
05:44The Savana Grande arepa has yellow cheese and shredded beef.
05:49The capital has shredded cheese and other fillings.
05:52And there's another innovation. The arepas are square.
05:59A detail that stands out is the shape. Instead of the classic round arepa, here, the dough is made into a square.
06:07Because we are doing something different from the traditional round arepa.
06:14Customers, when they come to the table to eat, they always ask, why are the arepas square?
06:18And, well, we wanted to offer something new. And since corn, one of our staple foods, is so central, we created a square arepa to surprise people.
06:26Square arepas have been a huge hit. And what stands out is that the creativity goes beyond just the idea.
06:35The arepas are square, made to order, and named after Caracas metro stations, Mamera, Capitolio, Savana Grande, and Plaza Venezuela.
06:45We do things the traditional way, like making Venezuelan arepas start with water.
06:50Many think it's flour first, but it's water. Salt, then flour, knead, and we have a mold to make them since the arepa has the concept of the metro of Caracas.
06:59What is more Venezuelan than the metro of Caracas, which is the Venezuelan's main mode of transportation.
07:05And the arepa is something that us Venezuelans have under our arms since birth, as the saying says.
07:11It's something that is typical from our land.
07:14Estacion Arepa has won over Caracas diners who don't just enjoy the different shape of the classic dish, but also reaffirm what the arepa means to them.
07:24This one I'm eating is really good. You know, the arepa is Venezuelan, and the shredded beef is delicious.
07:33I love arepas. For me, it's the best. I really don't think I could live without arepas.
07:42It's part of our culture. It's arepa. I love it. It's tradition.
07:51This initiative is a clear example of the creativity and economic movement that drives our country.
07:59And now we have a short break coming up. But first, remember, you can join us on TikTok and tell us what English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and more.
08:07We'll be right back. Stay with us.
08:21Welcome back.
08:22Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz announced on Thursday the closure of the Ministry of Justice, describing it as a ministry of persecution, injustice, and selling sentences.
08:32At a press conference, the president dismissed the minister, Freddy Vicovich, with just 11 days after he took office, arguing that he had a final judgment against him.
08:42He appointed Deputy Minister Jorge Garcia as his replacement, a nomination question by Vice President Edman Lara, who pointed out that Garcia has a long list of lawsuits against him that make him unfit for the position.
08:55The closure of the Ministry of Justice is unprecedented in Bolivian institutional history and raises questions about compliance with the principles of separation of powers and the continuity of judicial guarantees.
09:08Meanwhile, in Argentina, more than 276,000 production-related jobs have been cut in the country since President Javier Millet took office.
09:21The information was provided by a study conducted by the Center for Argentine Political Economy, CEPA, which covered the period from November 2023 to August 2025.
09:33The report shows a contradiction in formal employment, the closure of 19,164 companies, and a decrease in the number of workers employed in the productive units by 276,624, representing an average of more than 432 jobs lost per day.
09:54The report concludes that smaller companies with up to 500 employees accounted for the majority of closures, representing 99.63% of the companies lost.
10:09Moving on to Brazil, a fire broke out on Thursday in one of the Bolivians hosting the 30th Conference of the Parties, COP30, to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in the Brazilian city of Belém do Pará.
10:22The fire started at 2.30 p.m. local time in the Blue Zone, administrated by the UN, secured the personnel cordoned off the area and evacuated dozens of people.
10:33The governor of Pará and Brazil's Minister of Tourism reported that firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and that there were no injuries.
10:42Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started in the Indian pavilion, but the causes and origin are unknown.
10:48The fire occurred on a key day for breaking the deadlock in negotiations on climate adaptation and roadmasts for phasing out fossil fuels.
10:57In other news, in the United States, a federal court ruled against President Donald Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., under the pretext of fighting crime.
11:12District Just Jacob ruled that the intervention ordered by the White House is unconstitutional and exceeds the President's powers.
11:20According to the ruling, the President cannot mobilize the forces unless there is a specific legal basis in the current regulations to support it.
11:29Last August, Trump ordered the deployment of over 300 National Guard soldiers, which led to tension between the federal government and the local administration.
11:38Several international organizations have stated that the livelihoods of more than 230 million people are at risk due to extreme heat.
12:04According to the report on extreme heat and agriculture presented at the UN Climate Change Conference COP30, this phenomenon affects food production by damaging crops, affecting livestock health and reducing fishing availability.
12:19The study also reported that rural workers are 30 times more likely to die from exposure to extreme heat than workers in other sectors.
12:29On the other hand, meteorological and hydrological services emphasize that the combination of preemptive alerts, protections, plans for agricultural workers and sustainable adaptation measures is the most effective formula for protecting lives and crops from extreme heat.
12:45Meanwhile, Indonesian authorities reported the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people, including more than 100 climbers, following the eruption of Mount Semeru on the island of Haba last Wednesday.
13:01The volcano, one of the most active in the archipelago, remains constantly active and has generated multiple explosions in the last 24 hours.
13:09The alert level was raised to level 4, the maximum on the local scale, after pyroclastic flows were recorded on the mountainside.
13:19An exclusion zone of 8 km from the crater was established, a measure that seeks to ensure the safety of surrounding communities.
13:27The volcano has emitted large columns of ash and projected lava and rocks up to 15.5 km down their slope during the last 24 hours.

14:29Welcome back.
14:30The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths of two young people during an Israeli military raid with snipers deployed in the town of Karf Aqab, West Bank.
14:40According to the organization, Israeli snipers opened direct fire on two young men aged 18 and 16 who tried to confront the occupation.
14:49The occupation army deployed a large number of troops in the streets and on the roofs of residential buildings to carry out the attack,
14:56which unleashed a state of extreme tension throughout the city.
14:59Witnesses reported the continued deployment of Israeli forces in and around the city,
15:04as well as violent raids and indiscriminate shooting against young people who tried to resist the incursion.
15:09Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Israeli forces extended the yellow line in eastern Gaza city by over 300 meters in an operation carried out without prior warning.
15:26Israeli tanks entered the eastern neighborhoods of Al Shaf, Al-Nasas and Baghdad, blocking exit routes and pushing concrete barriers into inhabited areas.
15:37The expansion of the yellow line established by the US-mediated ceasefire agreement implies a territorial advance that violates the agreed terms.
15:45The Israeli advance came after a deadly attack on Wednesday against neighbors in Gaza city and Yehan Yunis,
15:52which left 34 people killed, including at least 17 children and women.
16:02For its part, the Palestinian-resistant movement Hamas has denounced Israel's violation of the ceasefire following the massacres in Gaza and Han Yunis.
16:11Hamas condemned the massacre perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in the cities of Gaza and Han Yunis,
16:17which resulted in the assassination of 33 Palestinians, including 12 children and 8 women.
16:23In this regard, the persistent movement held the Sinus entity responsible for violating the ceasefire agreement by killing and injuring civilians.
16:31Hamas described the massacre as a dangerous escalation,
16:34which will the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to resume the genocide against the Palestinian people,
16:41in addition to mentioning the ongoing policy of demolition and destruction of homes,
16:46as well as the closure of the Hrafa border crossing.
16:49In other news, African ministers adopted the Hrabat Declaration on Thursday,
17:01in the capital of Morocco, to combat the recruitment of child soldiers.
17:05The African Ministerial Conference on Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of Children in Conflict
17:11ended with a consensus that reaffirms the continent's determination to combat this problem.
17:17The final document expresses serious concerns about the increasing violations such as recruitment, sexual violence and kidnapping.
17:25The declaration underlines the need to create protective environments that address the root causes of recruitment.
17:31To this end, community resilience and early warning mechanisms are considered fundamental as part of a comprehensive pre-empting strategy.
17:40In Colombia, the 42nd edition of the Bogota Film Festival kicked off,
18:04an event that reaffirms its commitment to independent film and new voices in Latin American cinema.

18:39to promote emerging talent and provide free spaces for students and film lovers, democratizing access to art house cinema.
18:46And speaking of films, we continue in Russia, where the 16th edition of the Brazilian Film Festival is taking place.
19:00The event, which will run until December 7, is being held in four Russian cities.
19:06The program includes the screening of I'm Still Here by Walter Salis, and six new films, including dramas and documentaries,

19:27pointing out that this cultural exchange strands deep ties between the two countries.
19:32And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
