00:23Venezuela rejects U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean Sea and what the South American country describes as a misinformation machine.
00:36And hospitals in Gaza reported on Sunday that at least 11 people, including two children, have died of starvation and severe malnutrition in the last 24 hours.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from Vincelso Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:56We begin with the information following Election Day in Bolivia.
01:14The Supreme Electoral Tribunal has announced their preliminary results with 91.32 of the tallies counted.
01:22Right-wing candidate Rodrigo Paz of the Christian Democrat Party was in the lead with 32.08 percent of the votes.
01:31That is 1,546,892 votes.
01:36In second place was the candidate of the Free Alliance Party, Jorge Tuto Quiroga, with 26.94 percent of the votes.
01:44Both candidates will go to the second round on October 19th.
01:48The Supreme Electoral Tribunal President, Oscar Jacenteufeo, said that the word pledge was kept and that the preliminary results attest to it.
01:58And after this election results in Bolivia that were released, let's review the profile of the Christian Democrat Party candidate Rodrigo Paz Pereira.
02:13Rodrigo Paz was born on September 22nd in 1967 in the city of Santiago de Compostela in Spain,
02:19while his family was in exile during a time of military dictatorships in the country.
02:24Paz is the son of former President Jaime Paz Zamora, who governed under the auspices of dictator Hugo Banzer.
02:33He began his political career in 2002 as a deputy for two terms and later became first a councilman and then mayor of the city of Carijá in the south of the country in 2015.
02:45His time as mayor is one of the most controversial chapters of his career due to the fact that the several works promoted by him were questioned for alleged overpricing and execution failures.
02:57During his campaign, he has issued sexist statements and against laws in defense of women victims of gender-based violence.
03:05In addition, his running mate, Edman Lara, former police captain, was dismissed in 2024 for disciplinary proceedings, despite presenting himself as a corruption whistleblower.
03:22And now a little more about the candidate of the Free Democratic Alliance, Jorge Tuto Quiroga.
03:28Let's see more.
03:29Jorge Tuto Quiroga Ramírez, born in Cochabamba on May 5, 1960, is an engineer and business administrator who studied at several U.S. universities.
03:39After working with the multinational IBM, Quiroga began his political career under the mentorship of Hugo Banzer, Bolivia's military dictator from 1971 to 1978.
03:52Years later, Banzer ran for president again, assuming office in 1997 with Quiroga as his vice president.
04:02At 65, Quiroga remains a neoliberal politician advocating for the privatization of public enterprises, a policy that he first implemented in the year 2001 when he served as interim president, replacing Banzer.
04:16During his brief presidency, he enforced the privatization of state-owned companies and adopted radical neoliberal economic measures, which many argue led the widespread poverty in Bolivia.
04:29Quiroga has run for president multiple times, including in 2005, 2014, and 2020, but was unsuccessful on each of those occasions.
04:40In 2019, he took part in the coup d'etat that deposed the government of Evo Morales.
04:46And in this context, the president of the plurian national state of Bolivia, Luis Arce, posted on his social media account X after the presidential election voting concluded.
05:02He said,
05:02I salute and congratulate every Bolivian woman and men who went to the polls today to exercise their civic right and duty to our country and democratically elect the next president of our plurian national state of Bolivia.
05:16As the national government, we have made every effort to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, despite constant internal and external attacks aimed at sabotaging it.
05:28We have succeeded.
05:29Now, the Bolivian people have the floor.
05:31We are confident that in the second round, our population will once again reaffirm that Bolivians resolve our problems peacefully, demonstrating once again the democratic vocation that has always characterized us.
05:44Democracy has prevailed.
05:46Long live Bolivia in its bicentennial.

08:36Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
08:39Venezuela's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López rejected the United States military deployment in the Caribbean Sea
08:45and what he describes as the Nazi-style disinformation machine.
08:50The head of the Bolivarian Defense stated that his country is facing a battle between the truth and the lies
08:56created by Washington's warmongering media machine in reference to the U.S. allegations
09:01about the presence of drug cartels in the Caribbean Sea, specifically in Venezuelan territory.
09:08According to the government official, Washington ignores the United Nations report
09:12clarifying that Venezuela is a country free of illicit crops and laboratories for processing them
09:19and stressed that 90 percent of drug trafficking is carried out in the Pacific Ocean towards the United States.
09:31War is built up aggressively. Firstly, public opinion is created, which is what they're doing right now,
09:37with a strong positioning.
09:42Yesterday, they said they were going to carry out a deployment in the Caribbean Sea to fight the cartels.
09:49I asked the United States, aren't you going to deploy forces in the Pacific Ocean
09:53where almost 90 percent of the drugs pass through to the United States?
09:58Is the Caribbean the problem? Is it Venezuela?
10:02Are the cartels then in Venezuela?
10:04Are the coca crops in Venezuela? I asked myself.
10:08It's just a narrative that they want to impose in order to attack Venezuela
10:11by constructing lies to turn them into truths.
10:15In the best style of Goebbels, the head of the Nazi propaganda,
10:18it is the truth against the lie.
10:21They have a great communication apparatus to spread their lies and construct false positives.
10:27Anyone who wants to fabricate a lie can do so,
10:30and nothing happens, because there is no law.
10:33There is no international rule of law,
10:35because the international law is headless.
10:38And in this context, the Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter
10:45issued a statement condemning the latest United States threat against Venezuela,
10:50warning of the threat of the use of force
10:52in an attempt to undermine Venezuelan sovereignty and independence.
10:56The member states of the group noted that with great concern,
11:00the reported intention of the government of the United States of America
11:04to initiate military actions in Latin America,
11:08using the fight against drugs as an excuse for an open military intervention in the region.
11:14They reaffirmed their unwavering solidarity with Venezuela
11:17while rejecting in the strongest terms any policy,
11:21including through covert or overt actions,
11:24as well as the vindication of anachronic doctrines
11:26that seek regime change in sovereign states under any pretext,
11:30including in Venezuela.
11:34And in this regard, the Venezuelan government thanked on Friday
11:39the support of the international organization
11:42precisely through a post on his Telegram account.
11:45The Venezuelan foreign minister, Ivan Gil,
11:48shared on behalf of the President Nicolás Maduro,
11:50we extend our sincere gratitude to the Group of Friends
11:54in Defense of the UN Charter for their solidarity with Venezuela
11:58and their steadfast rejection of U.S. military threats
12:01and defabricated, unfounded narratives used to justify them.
12:12And in Argentina, the Taxi Drivers' Union demonstrated on Sunday
12:16in support of former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
12:20The taxi drivers gathered outside her home in Buenos Aires.
12:23The former president is currently under house arrest,
12:27waiting for a decision on her appeal request.
12:29The taxi drivers expressed their support and called for her release,
12:33claiming that she had been a victim of political, media,
12:37and judicial persecution orchestrated by concentrated economic powers.
12:42The former president saluted the crowd,
12:44waving from her balcony amid chants and applause in support of her.
12:48And what we wanted to do today is to express,
12:56in principle our gratitude to Cristina,
12:58because in the cab, in our activity,
13:01the cab workers have class consciousness.
13:04We have lived the best years in the history of the cab.
13:07I will give you average data.
13:09Every three and a half years the 0 km cars were renewed,
13:13today you cannot change a car.
13:15Secondly, you had to open six or seven hours,
13:18and you had enough and enough to live well,
13:20the first one, and the second one,
13:23which is the most important,
13:24that we absolutely consider that the sentence is arbitrary,
13:28that she needs immediate freedom,
13:30because she is innocent.
13:31There are many of our comrades who belong to Peronism,
13:39and we recognize that the best years we had
13:41with the three or four years old cars,
13:44we had a good level of revenue that allowed us
13:46to have an activity in full progress.
13:49A good job stability.
13:51And, well, no liberalism came with its usual policies,
13:54even in Ober's paperwork it appeared how they wanted
13:57to enter the continent, when the right wing won.
13:59Because before it was not politically convenient for them,
14:03they were going to have many obstacles,
14:05and the regulation really affected our activity
14:07to a greater extent.
14:11And now we have a second short break coming up,
14:14but first remember you can join us on Facebook
14:16at Tell Us Your English.

14:29now we wanted to look forward to writing the show,
14:32it's important,
14:34and it's great to learn how to figure out
14:34what we want to learn about,
14:52but goals and races.
