00:11gorgeous look at the waves coming in over the rocks Wow what a treat I was dreaming of this

00:19I was actually just sat in a pool of my own sweat on the back a sleepy beach town in western El

00:27Salvador El Zonte a haven for surfers chasing warm water swells what do you think of this spot it's

00:36absolutely incredible it's stunning this coastal landscape is defined by the rugged cliffs that

00:43shape the shoreline carved over millions of years by the power of the Pacific Ocean and intense

00:49volcanic activity oh yeah yeah okay it's Molly you're not well do you know what it must have

00:57been something she's eating or something no yeah send her our love I hope she gets better quickly

01:02thank you guys I've said Molly's ill actually she's revising the route that's what she's doing in the

01:07room oh this is nice isn't it nice after Guatemala yeah man that was tough some things there's nothing

01:16you can do bus breaks down there's roadblocks if you can't do something out there why worry because

01:21you can't do anything about it I love that I won't lie to you it was interesting to see that we had made

01:27up some ground on you because we were worried that we're going to start having two different races the

01:31three of us and then just you on your own while race positions remain unchanged the 23 hour lead for

01:37Anita and Bal has reduced to just three and a half hours it's time that we take those those front runner

01:44positions definitely I think you guys nip up to second we'll take that oh is it is that how it's

01:50gonna happen not first then oh they're so far ahead though you're too kind with two legs completed Roman

02:00and Harley Moon have the healthiest looking budget whilst Molly and Tyler hold the least money I think

02:06anything that helps the budget will be a priority going into this leg maybe pick up some work along the

02:11way keeping it cheap and prove to ourselves that we can be better than third place now you're doing

02:18the budgeting for this yeah I'm the banker what's the what's the secrets I'm not telling you he's a

02:24Yorkshireman and a Punjabi he never spends anything now it feels like all right it's anyone's right bring it

02:41here we go again I've got butterflies at the moment hi how you doing just for you guys thank you very

02:54much your third checkpoint is valley the angels Angeles the valley of the angels yeah very good

03:03touch English hopefully on our side okay map let's do it right Hawkeye let's get in there value angels

03:18valley the angels I found there you go we're going to Honduras baby marking the halfway point for the

03:28race valley de Angeles Honduras the most mountainous country in Central America seated within this alpine

03:38terrain it's a former 16th century mining town and now a popular weekend getaway from the capital

03:45to reach this third checkpoint teams will continue their journey through El Salvador known as the

03:52land of volcanoes with over 20 forming the country's spine having suffered a devastating 12-year civil war

03:59followed by a rise in gang violence a recent government crackdown means El Salvador has become safer for

04:06tourists who travel after dark is still widely discouraged and rarely exists

04:11this looks good to me conchagua volcano I've never been on top of a volcano for a start it's my most

04:20favorite thing in the world to wake up in a foreign country sunrise over a unique landscape it's when I

04:27feel at my most calm it's on the road as well and it's on the right direction let's go for it then yeah

04:31yeah I feel like we've had this amazing trip but it's been very and also my life is intense honestly

04:41dad I really want to just have a bit of peace and quiet I've worked since I was 14 like I've just

04:48worked all the time even when I was at uni I had three jobs and it's taken a lot to kind of get to this

04:53point but actually now I feel at 47 quite nice to like lower the frequency a little bit camping on top

05:01of a volcano that is a bit of me all right just get me there let's go taking advantage of the early

05:08start the pair aim to travel 185 kilometers to reach San Miguel just shy of conchagua volcano

05:16okay she said no don't know maybe half an hour leaving El Zonte travel timetables are elusive if

05:28there's a nice big juicy looking vehicle I might flag it down that teams must journey like locals hailing

05:34oncoming transport or hitching in daylight in the hope of a free ride well there's a bus the bus

05:40behind two buses one coming behind it dad grab that bus grab that bus ask him as well there's a bus

05:50there ask grab it grab it leave your bag that might just grab the bus okay I'll ask it this go to San

05:59Salvador see okay one moment please for a vote on a moment oh there's this but no okay

06:07no no no what was that one going he's not waiting please wait wait wait wait that was the bus how did

06:21he just drive off I just got off and then he drove off because we were dilly dallying I was on it I was

06:28on the bus oh yeah okay I'm gonna either flag down a bus or flag down somebody let's go all right

06:39Honduras here we come which way next to leave three hours and 35 minutes after the leaders siblings Roman

06:49and harley moon you've got to make up that time because Anita and Bal they're already on their way

06:54I really don't want them to be fair they're gonna get the hat trick ball please please please here we go

07:02oh are you going to San Salvador hello yeah muchas gracias you're a lifesaver you really are thank you

07:11let's go daddy oh could be strategically quite good to be close to a border sure yeah so we get to

07:17Honduras as quickly as possible and you've got the option of the Union which can take you up to the

07:22capital that's close to valley the Angus we could be the first ones in Honduras to leave El Salvador

07:27teams could depart by sea from the port of La Union although they can cover good distance by boat they

07:33must surrender themselves to the timing of the tide alternatively they could enter Honduras via the main

07:40land border crossing El Amatillo a spot that is well connected but often congested since we've been in El

07:48Horizonte it's obvious that you know there's a lot more tourists a lot more people that speak English

07:52sticking by the coast the route looks it looks so easy clear yeah let's hug the coast then going on

07:58the main touristy track we've got more chance of running into people that can help us I'm happy if

08:03you're happy are you happy I don't know but something's just telling me if we could be the

08:09first ones into Honduras it could be good yeah okay baby just see how far down we can get before it

08:17gets dark oh a bus stop it must stop hopefully all buses lead to Honduras yeah I think this is up

08:23yeah let's go the siblings plan to bus hop through the region of Surf City to reach La Union and enter

08:31Honduras by sea where are we going I don't actually know what you mean we jumped on the first bus we

08:40could find we don't know if it's going in the right direction it's going inland and that doesn't feel

08:47right what's your final destination oh you can speak English sure we're trying to hug the coastline as

08:53much as possible to get to La Union is it possible you're sure but you are here right so we're not going

09:00along the coast okay Holly I think get off okay to avoid heading inland the siblings hop off I mean

09:1011 kilometers away from the checkpoint all right we have not moved very far I hope it's not a bad omen

09:16let's do this my nana always used to say a bit of sea that makes you feel better

09:22setting off almost four hours after the race leaders the two remaining teams

09:34Molly and Tyler with a four-minute lead on their fellow stragglers oh man I feel the worst I've felt in a long

09:45time it has been a rough 24 hours I don't know if we ate something dodgy but we got a bit of food

09:52poisoning I'm not feeling sick anymore but Ty's been ill today so we just got to take it easy and I just

10:01want us to get moving right Valley De Anguilles where do you think it is so you need to carry on for a

10:10second my throat yeah haven't eaten Connie can't keep it down Molly's absolutely gonna need to carry the

10:23both of us because I don't know what I've got to offer aside from carrying my own backpack at this

10:28moment I feel sick now let's go to San Salvador we know it's a good transport hub and then we'll work

10:36out a plan all right yeah yeah we'll be all right okay found it you found it right there it's in

10:45Honduras well done Dylan have it the coastal routes I am a bit worried about being on boats and seasick

10:54let's go in land again then yeah it's more north that checkpoint whereas if we're going south it might

10:59be a bit tougher to get up so it does look more direct we want to we want to get ahead of some people so

11:04this looks like the quickest route to me also maybe we can try and find something that we could

11:10just share together and experience together yeah and that'd be special yeah it'd be nice to go to an

11:15actual beautiful town so which you total is here it's on the waters near the water that sounds fun

11:21okay okay let's try and find the bus he's off again my son quick March Dylan and Jackie plan to use

11:33the capital for quick onward connections north to Suchitoto in the mountainous heartland oh

11:39oh there's a bus it might not be the right one it says San Salvador there on the bottom right

11:47really good that one on the road yeah we need to catch up with everyone

11:53oh my days those are right off

11:58this the bus I think this is the bus that this or not

12:04you're gonna have to carry us I'm sorry yeah you're my hero I know just 15 minutes farther east as dusk

12:21descends do we want to find a bus that got us a little bit further down the code or do we find

12:26somewhere to stay here a cheap hostel hey we'd like to get to the union yeah is it possible to

12:35get a bus from here to the yeah you can take a bus or taxi from here to the union and you do it on

12:42the way for a beach do you think we're better off finding a cheap hostel here that's a night yeah you

12:48can do it today it was in an hour yeah okay thank you so much my man really appreciate it thank you

13:35distracted you were like hey everyone here is outrageously good looking yeah yeah and you do the

13:43rest of the race on your own I don't know how you do it sometimes you know we're in this race you're

13:52trying to find somewhere to stay and you're still able to just go oh look we're on holiday oh there's

13:56some fit guys or something like that I just feel like life is so short and I want to know that I've

14:03really enjoyed it and I do try to actively be happy I do get jealous of that you know you feel it's a

14:12choice that you feel happy because I always think like you were born with like a happy level that's

14:18here and my ceiling was like here you know even with my tablets I can't fully get there do you know

14:28what I mean I've been on antidepressants for for over 15 years for me they help definitely you know

14:38for some people it's therapy for some people it's just going down to the pub and having a pint with

14:42their mates like that can be their thing it's not one shoe fits all I've been through some horrible times

14:49but I've made the decision now to to come off them um because I feel like I'm in a good place in life

14:56now that I'm at a point where I've stopped taking the antidepressants it's trying to discover what my

15:04actual emotions are and don't get me wrong they really helped me through a really bad part of my life

15:10yeah but I've not known since I was 15 who I am do you know what I mean like what what makes me sad or

15:17what makes me emotional or what makes me happy yeah but I I'm finding it hard I'm discovering like

15:27panic attacks again or like anxiety attacks like doing something like this for me is such a test of how I'm

15:35gonna react emotionally prior to this trip I guess I just thought you were just a bit of a worrier for

15:47the sake of worrying and I know it's only been a couple of weeks but I do feel like I'm really

15:57getting to understand you better I do massively appreciate that you've been much more understanding

16:03of my thought process yeah because I know it can be confusing I would have haven't spent this much

16:09time together yeah thank you have a safe trip thank you so much having hitched a free ride Molly and

16:23Tyler are halfway to the capital and planning to restrict expenditure with some creative tactics it's

16:32like either available or not right yeah the greens available but how do we pay please connect three

16:41hours 11.99 our additional 4.99 and there's a condom I now suddenly don't want to stay on this bed

16:53wait there's a music button are you killing me babe don't even get I'll throw up on you I promise you

17:06now I feel like death just grateful that we've got a bed to rest in tonight Molly's doing a phenomenal job

17:13and looking after me but I can't make decisions so it's not an ideal situation considering how close the

17:19teams are on the leaderboard right now at least like you've got a little bit of vomit around your

17:25mouth or you need to blow your nose there's a tissue dispenser right

17:29having travelled only 11 kilometers this leg Roman and Harley Moon are making an early start

17:58aiming for the port of La Union to get to Honduras as quickly as possible

18:08and now we wait

18:12Dad I'm like a kid on Christmas Day whilst Anita and Bal are more than halfway across El Salvador on their way to

18:19Conchagua volcano I'm really looking forward because I've never been on a volcano have you ever slept in a tent never I've

18:26slept in somebody's garage I was a little bit tipsy then I didn't know where I was

18:33start to come out city a bit more now 130 kilometers behind them and leaving San Salvador

18:41Dylan and Jackie are heading for the mountains of Cordillera del Balsamo seeking a taste of tradition

18:47I want to try one of those with pooses oh yeah yeah yeah that's meant to be a local El Salvador Doreen dish

18:55sounds good

18:57okay San Salvador all right finally reaching the capital Molly and Tyler need to plan their next move

19:04let's get the map out because last night we were in no state to make a plan no still don't feel 100%

19:11I can't lie about like going long distance it's a bit treacherous like when I'm feeling like this

19:16I understand so I feel like if we rest up today taking a bit of San Salvador then when we feel 100% we

19:25can absolutely just go for the checkpoint visit yeah time today is my day to make some decisions for the

19:32both of us and yeah just lead us in the right direction feels like a little pressure today

19:39there is a lake called lake Ilopango yeah just outside of San Salvador I feel like I'm quite a

19:47confident person on like the surface but deep down I have a lot of doubt and that comes in when I'm

19:55making decisions because you don't want to make the wrong one that sounds the perfect line of what

20:01I need right now let's go let's go I definitely think it's because I started in this industry so

20:08young that all my decisions were always discussed with management my parents I wasn't allowed to be

20:15independent I was always very like sheltered before this one it's too packed there's no seats I'm going

20:21to make an executive decision that the buses that come through here are all going to be too full

20:27maybe we should just get cabs okay let's just do it I'll back it all right we just need to negotiate

20:33the price I just want to be able to like trust my gut and my instincts a little bit more excuse me

21:29195 kilometers to the east wow you are not kidding me the volcano of conchagua

21:47a name taken from the indigenous Lenka people meaning flying jaguar

21:53formed by two stratovolcanoes the summit soars to over 1200 meters

21:59offering unparalleled views of the bay of fonseca on the pacific ocean this doesn't look real it

22:05doesn't it looks like a painting it's one of those moments when you're like am i actually here

22:11surrounded by a coastal forest home to numerous exotic avian species including el salvador's national

22:19bird the mot mot what a place to say you did your first camping experience there's a door here but

22:26how do you get into the door under the zip here i want some planks at the moment i think i need a

22:31mattress but i'll tell you something a view from here is amazing

22:40and i hope it doesn't tickle oh my god you look like a boy scout dad oh yes with a boggle

22:47very old boy scout king gang golly golly ging gang goo ging gang goo this is magnificent isn't it

22:57i feel quite at peace up here but when it's time to move i cannot explain how my brain works it just

23:04goes into okay let's figure out how we get from a to b and just make it happen i do the same sort of

23:11thing i'm always thinking two steps ahead yeah same same the way you brought us up there was no time

23:17for rest it was like get up do get up and do something don't waste the day it's a mindset it's

23:25a mindset and part of me is like that because i've seen you and mum work really hard we're an immigrant

23:30community that we came here with nothing yeah weren't you one of the first indian families in bradford

23:38in your back-to-back house and your cobbled street cobbled street and tin bath yeah i mean

23:43my granddad how much money did he have when he came from india nothing that was like 1950s and

23:48couldn't speak in english yeah and also you worked really hard well we wanted you to be better than

23:53us and not struggle as hard as we did and have a better life yeah i grew up in a very aspirational

24:00household one thing i was given by my parents is that i was just made to believe that i could achieve

24:05anything but also there is this huge expectation that if you're going to do something you better

24:09do it to the best of your ability there was a lot of expectation to not let everyone down and i guess

24:14everything about me is about showing that actually i am fully capable but yeah that gets exhausting

24:24i feel like i'm in a race with myself yeah just a constant race what's the end goal exactly i feel like

24:31i've never really known what the end goal is other than just keep going and i think there's more to

24:36me than just someone who wants to achieve maybe be more compassionate towards myself and that's it

24:42we know how hard you work to get to where you are yeah and we're proud of that thanks dad nice chat

24:47yeah why not we haven't chat like this for ages ever yeah do you know what's gonna do it that sunrise

24:55tomorrow morning yeah wow oh my days oh moses perfect also in pursuit of some respite from the race molly and

25:12tyler are just outside the capital at lake elopango this is unreal i've never seen anything like it

25:24a vast volcanic caldera with a depth of more than 230 meters i just can't get over the fact this is in

25:31the middle of a volcano it was formed over 1500 years ago by the tierra blanca hoven eruption which

25:38blanketed the whole of central america in ash are you feeling better after yesterday yes i feel like

25:44this is the bit of peace we needed with their strength returning buenos dias they spot a chance

25:50to ease their money worries these boats need cleaning right yeah do you put our flip-flops on yeah that

25:57makes sense i reckon we do all high surfaces first and then we'll do the floor after yeah sounds like

26:04we're in our kitchen miles i can't lie i think you've absolutely smashed this choosing to come here

26:11and we're not really feeling 100 is the best thing that we could have done i know today didn't see like

26:18a big decision but it's just like i don't want to ever be the reason we're not progressing or something

26:24yeah if you were to make a decision yeah and we don't progress in the race what like the world's not

26:29ending yeah i know even earlier when we were bartering for that taxi the knock-on that scares me

26:39it's like we could have had five more dollars for our budget that now we don't have and then i think

26:44oh no does that mean we won't eat as well today or or will we not be able to get anywhere else today you

26:51know it's just my i just spiral yeah i don't want to let anyone down you could never let me down i

26:57guess making the wrong decision in a place that's so public is really exaggerated like it's blown up yeah

27:06i know that this industry is so like cutthroat and so if i make the wrong decision you can lose it

27:13all in a heartbeat and i feel like that definitely plays on my mind all the time

27:17i always feel a little bit like you know an imposter and like i don't know i just feel like

27:26is it all down to luck and actually i don't think so i don't think so i think like you decided to

27:32carry on pursuing a career and doing the things that you want to do you decided to go for an audition

27:38and start acting i think my fear comes from the fact that i've been handed such an amazing card to be

27:45able to like live a dream career from so young that you feel like

27:53surely this is gonna run out soon this luck

27:59also though think about how many good decisions you've made in your lifetime compared to the bad

28:04decision true you completely like the balancing scales are outweighed entirely you've made some

28:09wicked decisions since we've been out i'm proud of you thank you what's great about the race is that

28:16you can see when a decision pays off and when it doesn't and i think that's quite reassuring i feel

28:21like i'm growing with the race look at that that is cleanest boat in the whole of el salvador

28:29just woke up from being half asleep and thought are we going all the way to la union for a boat and

28:42we don't even know the boat timetables having traveled for over eight hours across the country

28:47roman and harley moon are approaching the transport hub of san miguel where the road forks south to the

28:53port of la union the ferry departure point for honduras or north to el amatillo the main land border

29:01crossing someone then wondering if we get out of san miguel and head to el amatillo and to try and

29:07cross the border today is this san miguel yeah i think we should do it okay jump out yeah

29:12in the midst of anxiety we have jumped off the bus roman was feeling like we should get off and we

29:22can find 10 minutes to regroup feel very special like it was a decision of let's stop and reassess

29:30because there's a fork in the road that goes to to this border or to la union and in a panic i just

29:38kind of said right let's just get to that fort figure out which one we're going to take how long

29:44from here to la union like one hour one hour and at la union one time for honduras one hour on the boat

30:02i'm sorry to pull us off yeah if i thought we were going to cross the border in the north

30:07i'd say yeah but the fact that i don't know if we will what by sundown yeah i just don't think we

30:14will your gut's telling you the union i i'll go with you yeah yeah i'll go with you worst case

30:19scenario if tomorrow there's no boat we might be able to jump in another bus that takes yeah yeah yeah

30:25let's do it right let's start again okay so we're back on the same route

30:31this whole race is such a game of have i made the right choice and unfortunately i'm not a very good

30:38choice maker the hardest thing is realizing that you are going to have to stop and go to bed you

30:44know you just want to be there now but it's that thing of being okay with the fact that we're going

30:49to stay in the union tonight but we're going to do everything we can to get away from there as

30:55quickly as possible tomorrow nestled in the northern highlands overlooking the lempa river suci toto

31:08an ancient aztec word meaning the place of flowers and birds sweet town isn't it really pretty deeply

31:15scarred from its days as a battleground in the civil war the city used to sit close to the

31:20guerrilla groups fighting the government in the surrounding jungle dylan today it's a more tranquil

31:28town drawing visitors to its colonial architecture and vibrant markets look all the different herbs

31:35and spices look at the cinnamon here dylan how long it is oh wow i use cinnamon sticks in our christmas

31:41pudding ice cream oh yeah that's so nice yeah with ginger biscuits and raisins and cream i fancy some

31:47of that now don't you oh big time no cooked chocolate cake that's a good one i won a gold medal for my

31:53bakewell tart in the village pretty cool oh this is just what we need yeah it really is love for me came

32:04straight away with dylan i just adored him straight away he was cheeky up to mischief all the time

32:11with bows and arrows and water pistols ah pupusas p-p-p-p-p-p-p-pusa he brought a lot of laughter

32:23up until dylan was 25 and left home i knew him really well but i think in the past eight years he

32:31leads a different life gracias are you feeling hungry i am pretty hungry maybe a nice spot for the sunset

32:41Sometimes days can drift by and I don't hear from you and you just leave voice notes.

35:28Having prioritised leaving El Salvador quickly, Roman and Harley Moon are the first team to enter Honduras.

35:37This is what it's all about.

35:43Yesterday, there was a lot of anxiety around whether we've gone the right way.

35:47But look where we are. This is really special.

35:51Named by Europeans after the Archbishop Fonseca, a nemesis of Christopher Columbus, the gulf is surrounded by three countries.

36:00El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

36:03Breathtaking to see it.

36:04And it's not like anything I've ever seen before.

36:07I feel like I'm in Jurassic Park.

36:09We could have gone bus to bus to bus to bus to bus all the way around.

36:12It would have been stressful.

36:14We would have saved money.

36:15But this is my kind of travel.

36:23The largest Pacific island in Honduras.

36:27Tiger Island was established as a major port by the Germans in the late 19th century.

36:34Today, it is a peaceful fishing community and receives scant foreign visitors.
