00:00I am Michelle Gale. I'm the co-founder and CEO of The World Reimagined and this Friday the 21st
00:06at Hyde Park Picturehouse we will be premiering Community Becoming Black and British Leeds.
00:13This is a five-part documentary which goes across different cities in the UK and this time we
00:20managed to tell the Leeds story about the heroes and the pioneers of Leeds, usually children of
00:28Windrush generation who really helped form Black British culture by setting up these wonderful
00:35community organizations which exposed their peers and younger people to the arts. We speak to Arthur
00:41France MBE who started Leeds West Indian Carnival which is not just you know a remarkable thing for
00:49Leeds it was the first carnival in Europe and I'm a Londoner and I always felt Notting Hill Carnival
00:56started it all when in fact you know Leeds has not been given the the credit that it deserves.
01:02We speak to other people like Dr Khadija Ibrahim, RJC Dance, David Hamilton who started Phoenix Dance
01:11and we get to finally hear their stories of how they came to be, how they managed to set up these
01:18wonderful organizations, what was the the climate around them that that made them say I'm going to
01:25start these organizations because context is always important to know what were they trying to prove,
01:31who were they around and we really really believe it's a love letter to Leeds and specifically
01:39Chapel Town. So many of the people we spoke to just said how they felt about Chapel Town and it's
01:47really emotive language you know how safe they felt, how community orientated it was. The whole
01:55evening is in conjunction with We Are Parable and Doma and We Are Parable have curated some films
01:59from some local Leeds filmmakers which is why we say we're really celebrating Leeds culture. We have
02:05some local Leeds filmmakers and also be premiering the film about David Oluwale as well and then the
02:11evening is also followed by something called Maestro Still Rising which is an interview with me
02:16putting my old music career hat on and I'm having an interview and song feature with another 90s musical
02:26singer called Kelly LaRock. You might know her from Basement Jack's fame but she had her own solo career as well
02:33and what we do with Maestro Still Rising is we really talk about that journey again of how you came into music, how you did the 90s music industry which
02:42really is called surviving the 90s music industry. Anyone who came through the 90s music industry will have a story to tell.
02:52So this Friday the 21st of November Hyde Park Picture House, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to mix and mingle with the community.
03:00our host is the producer of the 50th of December Hyde Park.
