00:00here's the story developing in detroit the tigers have now successfully brought back a second key
00:06player from their 2025 playoff team all within two weeks this new one-year contract is with
00:11second baseman glaber torres and his acceptance marks a franchise first no tiger had ever before
00:18accepted a qualifying offer now let's talk about the deal itself it's a one-year contract worth
00:2522 000 and 25 000 what's interesting here is that this is actually a raise from the one-year
00:3215 million dollar contract he signed with detroit just last december it's not the long-term security
00:38he was probably hoping for after having such a great rebound season but it does bring the soon
00:43to be 29 year old back to the team where he put together an all-star campaign you'll remember that
00:49campaign was slowed down the stretch by a mid-summer sports hernia injury he did have surgery last month
00:54but the good news is he's expected to be fully ready for spring training when he was healthy
00:59torres really became the spark plug at the top of the tigers batting order and a quiet leader in the
01:04clubhouse let me break down his numbers for you his 256 batting average was actually a point down from
01:10his 22nd son in distance or done spent for bunsen skandron 44 clip but he drew 85 walks that was the
01:20fourth most among all american league hitters and it earned him a career best 358 on base percentage
01:26he also raised his slugging percentage to 387 which boosted him to a 108 ops plus and here's a key
01:33stat for you his 16.1 strikeout rate was the second lowest of his entire career while his average exit
01:40velocity of 90.0 mph was just barely off his career best mark of 90.1 from back in 2022
01:48when you look at his overall value his 2.9 bwar marked a full win over his 2023 value and it
01:55actually tied him with zach mckinstry for third on the tigers the only players ahead of him were the
02:00al cy young award winner tarik skubal and the gold glove award winning catcher dylan dingler now you
02:07might be wondering what exactly is a qualifying offer well it gave torres a pretty simple choice this
02:13offseason he could decline the offer if he was confident he could get a lucrative long-term contract on the
02:18open market or he could accept this nice salary bump if the multi-year offers from other teams
02:22weren't that impressive and here's an important rule players can only receive a qualifying offer
02:28once in their career so this means torres will have another chance to go back into free agency
02:33next winter without any draft pick compensation attached which is a big deal for the tigers presenting
02:39this offer which was their first since 2014 was a real win-win situation they would either keep
02:45torres for another year if he accepted or they would get a first or second round pick in next
02:50summer's draft if he declined and signed with another team by keeping torres the tigers now have a
02:55chance to solidify their infield for next season and really focus on strengthening their pitching
03:00they can still look for opportunities to add offense on the market but they don't have the pressure
03:05to make a signing just to fill a giant hole the general manager jeff greenberg told reporters last
03:10week that torres decision inevitably affects the rest of the offseason it will affect the rest of
03:17the infield the outlook of the offseason so what does this mean for the team's lineup torres's return
03:23to second base shifts colt keith over to third base which is where he played a lot of his games in the
03:29second half of the season fellow all-star infielders javier bias and zach mckinstry are also back and will
03:35likely split time at shortstop now looking at the prospects top prospect kevin mcgonigal who's fresh
03:41off winning arizona fall league mvp honors faces a longer shot to make detroit's opening day roster
03:47but he is still expected to get a long look in spring training at both shortstop and third base
03:53and he's very likely to make his mlb debut at some point next season another name to watch is their
03:58number nine prospect max anderson he hit 447 in the afl after batting 296 between triple a toledo
04:06and double a erie and he has a chance to work into the mix at third base as a righty hitting option
04:12the same goes for their number six prospect how you lee this move fits perfectly with the tigers
04:18philosophy ever since scott harris took over as president of baseball operations back in 2022
04:24which has been to prioritize opportunities for young players torres's return gives the tigers
04:29that valuable veteran presence in their infield for another year but without blocking a position
04:34for any of their young guys in the long term so what are your thoughts on this one-year deal for
04:39the tigers and glaber torres
