00:00I like to do all the things that needs to be done.
00:02Help! Help, guys! Help, guys!
00:04Guys, come on!
00:07It's already getting really dark and very cold.
00:10Temperatures are dropping really fast.
00:14Days are shorter, so you spend more time alone in the cabin.
00:19This is one of these moments I would love to have someone close by to help me out.
00:24Yeah, I'm alone.
00:26Okay, no, this isn't working.
00:30I know you're never going to admit that you're cold.
00:32No.
00:33Back in the day around here, they just built with whatever the hell they had.
00:36They made it work, and I need to do the same.
00:38Or else before you know it, I'll be back in the city working a real job.
00:56The cold is the most dangerous thing in the Yukon in the winter.
01:14If you're not prepared for it, it can be a pretty situation pretty fast.
01:30Firewood is the most important thing here.
01:32If I don't have wood, I'm freezing.
01:38I always have a big pie ready just in case I break my leg and I can't go outside and cut firewood.
01:43Or if it drops to minus 50, the chancel won't start.
01:46You always have to make sure you have a safety pile.
01:50I'm planning on trying to find a little more efficient way of getting firewood.
01:59Right now, I'm just putting firewood in my dog sled, but I can't hold a lot of wood in one trip.
02:06So I want to build a little sleigh that I can pull behind me so I can double my load and I can be more efficient.
02:13A big fire took place on the trapline a few years ago, so there's a huge section that is burned.
02:29When I first came here and I saw the burn, I was like, oh, frick, there is nothing here.
02:32It's just this big dead land, but it's actually perfect.
02:36I have an endless supply of firewood and a lot of building material.
02:57It's essential for this lifestyle to know how to build things out of nothing.
03:03I can't just bring planes with all the lumber I need.
03:07It would be way too much money and it's just not possible.
03:11And building something from nothing, just a couple burnt poles, it's pretty rewarding.
03:28Looks more like a sleigh now.
03:31Looks good.
03:34I always think about my dad when I'm building stuff like this.
03:38I learned a lot of things from him.
03:41We used to build things like this together.
03:45He thinks it's a beautiful life that I chose and he's happy for me.
03:50It's hard when we can't be together all the time, but I'm happy I can do things that I know he would love to do.
03:56Hey, bud. Hey, bud. Hello. Okay.
04:02I'm using the plastic runners that are made for dog sled, so it's super, super, it's perfect.
04:09Nice.
04:10I think that's the weakest part of the sleigh here. If something breaks, I think that's going to be that. All the weight is going to be on here.
04:30I'm excited to try this. I think it's going to be fun, even if it's a disaster.
04:36That's a disaster.
04:39Say it.
04:43Come here.
04:44Hey, baby.
04:46Oh, you're so happy to go.
04:49You have a lot of things to say today.
04:52These dogs are Alaskans.
04:55Timber, it's not your turn.
04:57And they've been sled dogs for generations and generations.
05:02Yes, Lumi, we're going to go.
05:04Running and pulling, it's a big part of their identity. If they wouldn't run, they wouldn't be as happy.
05:12Guys, line up, line up, line up, line up.
05:16Okay, well, we'll try that.
05:24Okay.
05:26The trails around here are very curvy and hilly.
05:29Good boys.
05:31That's the part I'm a little bit worried about.
05:34Up, up.
05:36Oh, yeah, that's heavy.
05:42Up, up, up, up, up, up.
05:46Come on, up.
05:49Come on, Gabe.
05:50Up, let's go.
05:52Okay.
05:54Okay.
05:56Good boys.
06:02Hola.
06:04Hola, guys.
06:08Oh, that was pretty, pretty good.
06:10That curve was actually pretty chill, so it's more solid than I thought.
06:15It does look good, but tomorrow I'm going to cut a bunch of firewood and see how it goes when I'm loaded.
06:20That's the true test.
06:21This is winter at the log cabin.
06:34It's windy, it's cold.
06:37There is so much snow.
06:38And it's pretty hard to move around, but I love it.
06:44Okay, so that will be the floor.
06:48This is going to be at least 20 feet high.
06:50I'm going to build a solar panel system.
06:52Having electricity here on my land, it will just change everything.
06:56Oh, there's so much noise stuck there.
06:59For me, it's not a sin to be more modern, to use solar panel.
07:05For years, I used to light candles only.
07:09I know candles.
07:10I've done it.
07:11I've done it.
07:12Yeah, yeah.
07:13I've done it.
07:14I've done it.
07:38Five feet I would say.
07:41It's so important to keep busy, mostly in the wintertime, because days are shorter,
07:48so you spend more time alone in the cabin.
07:52So yeah, keeping busy, it's very good for the mental health.
07:57That's good enough.
08:00Those branches are in the way.
08:03I need to cut them off.
08:0920 feet from the ground, at least.
08:24All righty, yep, that's high enough.
08:30I'm dreaming about, you know, a radio, lights, everything will be somewhat comfortable inside.
08:38It's life-changing, actually.
08:45Parfait!
08:49Hey, man.
08:50Woo-hoo-hoo!
08:51Hey, the first one is done.
08:53Very relieved.
08:54Great.
08:55Okay, next one.
09:00This is one of these moments I would love to have someone close by to help me out.
09:04But, yeah, I'm a load.
09:11We depend a lot on food off the land.
09:24It's what we mainly feed our family.
09:26But you never know what you're going to get.
09:29You really need to work for it.
09:33The trip to Holly Lake is very long and it's a very cold ride.
09:40In the wintertime, it can take anywhere between four to six hours to travel to.
09:46We're very far from home here, but there's a reason why we travel very far.
09:53There's really big lake trout here.
09:54There's pike.
09:55Minus 40 and it takes a while for everything to start.
10:05Oh, wow.
10:08All right, ready?
10:11It's very cold and it's been cold for multiple days.
10:17Minus 45 to minus 52 with wind chill.
10:21We're going to put the first pole.
10:24It's brutal.
10:25But, you know, food is medicine and it's important to fuel our bodies with good food.
10:30It's way better to eat brook trout, you know, from the river than eating a fish stick from a box.
10:36How many?
10:37I think we need 12 holes.
10:39Okay.
10:40Okay.
10:48All right, go.
10:49The plan today is that we're going to put a stick through the ice and then we're going to get two white sticks
10:55and we're going to guide the stick under the ice with a rope attached behind that stick until the rope is on the other side.
11:03And then we tie the net after we're done that.
11:08Now, bro, who taught you to do this?
11:11Both your mom or your dad?
11:12Both.
11:13Sometimes in modern day world it's really hard to keep some traditions going, but doing it is keeping it alive and I think this is a great way to do it.
11:22All right, now I'm going to push it in like this.
11:29You see it?
11:31It's hard because it keeps freezing over and it's really deep in there, right?
11:36Yeah.
11:37Can you wiggle it around a bit?
11:40Okay, I think I'm holding it right now.
11:42All right.
11:43I'm going to push it.
11:44Okay, I feel it.
11:45Yeah.
11:46I'll put it there and I'll go to the next hole.
11:49Okay, I already lost it.
11:51I'm just trying to feel for it.
11:57Yeah.
11:58I don't see it.
11:59Do you still have it?
12:00Nope.
12:01Okay, no, this isn't working.
12:04I know you're never going to admit that you're cold.
12:06No.
12:07I don't mind putting my hand in there.
12:10It was probably not a good idea to do that.
12:12All day.
12:13All right.
12:14We'll have to go to Plan B.
12:28Living on a little island out the coast of Newfoundland.
12:31Boats are everything.
12:33All in your supplies, getting firewood.
12:36Everything out here happens by water.
12:42Having a motorboat out here, wintertime, full-time job.
12:45Every day I got to come down here, bail her out.
12:48Make sure it's not frozen.
12:53Yep.
12:54Almost out of the gas again.
12:55Story of my life around here.
12:57One of the biggest costs out here is gas.
12:59Not just burning gas to do things.
13:01I got to burn gas just to go get more gas to burn.
13:04Put me in a poor house before I know it.
13:08It'd be really beneficial to me if I had a boat
13:11I was able to get around in and do some work in
13:13that didn't require any gas at all.
13:15Just like the old timers back in the day.
13:18So I've been working on a special litter project.
13:20So many hours here to put into this tedious as hell and dusty.
13:35But it's going to be worth it in the end.
13:37It's like a new take on a traditional boat.
13:41Traditional Newfoundland Dory built in a modern way.
13:44Traditional Newfoundland Dory is a working boat.
13:47And back in the day around here that's how all the fishermen would travel.
13:51That's how they get all their supplies.
13:53That's how they make their money.
13:54Old skippers around here have been using dories forever.
13:57Really good in the rough water.
13:59And yeah, this thing would be a little workhorse for me.
14:01The outside of the boat would be done with fiberglass and epoxy.
14:07Traditionally this boat would have taken an entire winter to build.
14:12To do it like this I could knock it out in maybe a month.
14:17This little piece right here is going to be what's going to hold yours.
14:20Normally you buy little metal doohickeys here to hold yours.
14:24Back in the day around here they didn't have a store to buy metal doohickeys at.
14:28So they just used just a couple sticks.
14:32They just built with whatever the hell they had.
14:34They made it work and I need to do the same.
14:36Or else before you know it I'll be back in the city working a real job.
14:48That's the boat right there sir.
14:50It is like a giggly feeling to see it all come together.
14:54And this thing started like a pile of plywood and some paper plans.
14:58Now it's a living thing.
15:00Very, very happy the way it turned out.
15:02The big hurdle now will be getting it out of here.
15:05We are on the second story of the house.
15:07It's kind of like a ship in a bottle.
15:09It's stuck in here.
15:10The only way to get it out is to blow a hole inside the house somewhere to get it out.
15:14And this is where I'm thinking.
15:20And long term, the only thing I'm really worried about is the roof sagging down on that wall.
15:26Let's get some 2x4s and brace this up.
15:29It's not much of a brace job.
15:31It should hold.
15:32It's not much of a brace job.
15:33It should hold.
15:34Woo!
15:35We got daylight.
15:36Woo!
15:37That came out perfect.
15:39No problem getting a bone out of here now.
15:40It's a whole different house all of a sudden.
15:41What a view.
15:42All right, let's get this girl out of here.
15:44All right, let's get this girl out of here.
15:51Days are short.
16:14days are short in the Yukon in the winter you don't have a lot of daylight to do all
16:25the things that needs to be done so if you can save time it's gonna help you
16:44it's been pretty cold it's a little bit stubborn the priority for me in the winter is to stay warm
16:57so cutting firewood is the number one chore that I have to do I want to be more efficient and bring
17:06big loads of firewood so I don't have to travel so much working with a chance on the deep snow
17:13um I'm just careful because I don't see where my feet are so I don't want to get my feet down there
17:21hey buddies so it's slow process but uh we'll get there
17:28number one
17:31I don't want to go through too heavy for the first time I'm trying the sled so I'm just gonna go like
17:35yeah five or six logs in the sleigh just to try it out
17:43that's my work to get the logs out and then it will be their work to pull us out of here
17:56that's the last tree I'm cutting for today I think I have enough for one load I want to solve that tree
18:02as close to the trail as I can because I'm pretty down with that snow but I don't want to land it on the dog
18:10so I'll be careful
18:11oh boys
18:21well
18:28now we can try it but I think I'm a little bit optimistic
18:35I think it's gonna be a little too heavy
18:40oh maybe not
18:44I think we'll give it a go
18:47enough
18:50it's gonna be very heavy for the dogs
19:02there's a couple big hills to climb to go back home so that's the part where we'll see if we're too heavy
19:10or not
19:11hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop
19:12hop guys, hop, come on
19:13come on
19:14come on boys
19:15hop
19:16hop
19:17hop
19:18hop
19:19come on guys
19:20I know it's hard
19:21hop
19:22come on
19:24hop
19:25come on
19:26hop
19:27hop, let's go
19:28hop
19:30hop
19:31hop
19:32when I get tired of loneliness I just keep myself busy because it's not the equation
19:46of body it's mostly your mind so you've got to take care of your mind
19:53Well, today, the support is done, so now it's the platform.
20:03But man, that's trickier, because it's bigger, it's huge.
20:13These clouds, they're not good.
20:15There is no wind, even the birds, they're just hiding because there will be a big storm
20:20coming in.
20:21So, I've got to do it fast.
20:25Doing the solar panel system in the winter, well, this is maybe not the best time of the
20:29year to do it, but I don't have the luxury, you know, to wait and wait and wait until
20:33it gets warm.
20:35It's Quebec, half a year, it's winter, so you've got to work your way around and do what needs
20:42to be done.
20:43Oh, that's not too bad.
20:49Come on, big guy.
20:54Hey, man, I really don't want it to fall over me.
21:04That's pretty good.
21:06Oh!
21:07Holy smoke!
21:08That was close.
21:10Pushing yourself too hard can be dangerous, because nobody's around here.
21:14I am by myself.
21:15Man, I lost my grip.
21:20Man!
21:21Yeah!
21:21Woohoo!
21:22Yeah!
21:23Man!
21:24Yeah!
21:25Man!
21:26Yeah!
21:27Man!
21:28Yeah!
21:29Oh!
21:30Man!
21:31Yeah!
21:32This!
21:33Oh!
21:34Okay.
21:35Yeah!
21:36Oh!
21:37Okay.
21:38I need a board here.
21:39It will be like a safety rail.
21:42As the day goes, you get more than a safety rail.
21:45Oh!
21:46Yeah!
21:47Oh!
21:48Yeah!
21:49Oh!
21:50Oh!
21:51Oh!
21:52Oh!
21:53Oh!
21:54Oh!
21:55Oh!
21:56Oh!
21:57Oh!
21:58Oh!
21:59Oh!
22:00Oh!
22:01Oh!
22:02Oh!
22:03Oh!
22:04Oh!
22:05Oh!
22:06Oh!
22:07Oh, oh!
22:08As the day goes, you get more tired, so it's easier, you know, to do a mistake.
22:17You know, when I get tired, frustrated, I just think about a very good moment I've had
22:22on this land, and it just helps me to get through.
22:26Okay, when I first, you know, thought about it, I said to myself, ah, easy.
22:33Never easy.
22:37But still, this is why I like it here.
22:40I'm running always new stuff, so every effort, every job you do here, there is a reward.
22:47Last nail.
22:48This is a very big reward, this one.
22:55This is so great, man.
22:58It's very steady.
23:05First thing that will be the solar panel to set it up.
23:08Put in the light inside and make it, you know, make it like home.
23:14When you're out here on the land, you really have to adapt because not everything goes according
23:27to your plan.
23:30This is going to go like that every time we release the rope, it's going to look like
23:35this.
23:36And we're going to pull the rope, it's going to crawl forward.
23:39And then we release the rope, it's going to keep doing this, so it's going to keep crawling
23:44all the way to the end there.
23:48Oh yeah, it fits.
23:50Just right.
23:51Just right.
23:52Just right.
23:53It was meant to be.
23:54See?
23:55All right.
23:56Let go.
23:57Here it goes.
23:58See?
23:59It's crawling.
24:00Yeah.
24:01It's so cool.
24:02Oh, I hear it.
24:03This is a lot quicker than moving a pole under the ice.
24:13OK, it should be at the end now.
24:15All right.
24:16Right here.
24:17Do you see it?
24:21No.
24:22I think instead of doing another hole, just bring your chainsaw, let's make this one longer
24:43and we'll pull it out sideways.
24:44Like that, you'll have more chance of finding it.
24:47I'll go get my chainsaw.
24:48What?
24:49I forgot at the camp, it was warming up because of the ice.
24:52Are you serious?
24:53Yeah.
24:54Shh.
24:55It's really annoying.
24:56We need to not be out in this temperature.
25:01It hurts my face.
25:04I can't see it anywhere here.
25:10Like, I'm not going to keep making a whole bunch of holes.
25:13So maybe I'll try to back it up a little bit and see where it is.
25:17Oh my God.
25:18Oh my God.
25:19I think we lost the jig.
25:20Oh my God.
25:21Gilbert attached part of the string in the sled and I guess he forgot about it when he
25:36took off and then the jig followed him.
25:43Oh.
25:44What happened?
25:45Oh.
25:46You had it tight in the sled?
25:47Oh.
25:48Oh, that felt really funny.
25:49The sled felt funny?
25:50Yeah.
25:51Yeah.
25:52This would be why.
25:53Oh, look at that.
25:54Okay.
25:55All right.
25:56It's going to go in.
25:57Try to aim for the holes that we made.
25:58I guess that's the best we can do.
25:59Yeah.
26:00All right.
26:01Yeah.
26:02It's moving now.
26:03Gilbert?
26:04Huh?
26:05Once the rope is through, is it going to be pretty fast to put the net in?
26:20Uh, I don't know.
26:21Maybe another, an hour maybe?
26:24Oh my God.
26:25We don't have an hour.
26:27It's already getting really dark and very cold.
26:32Temperatures are dropping really fast.
26:34Okay.
26:35It should be about there.
26:37Yeah.
26:38Right here.
26:39I think I hit something there.
26:40You have it.
26:41I think I hit it.
26:42Let me check.
26:43Oh .
26:44There it is.
26:45Yeah.
26:46Finally.
26:47I'm going to feel relieved when I see it coming out of the ice.
26:50It's not out yet.
26:52Yeah.
26:53Yeah.
26:54Yeah.
26:55Yeah.
26:56Finally.
26:57I'm going to feel relieved when I see it coming out of the ice.
26:59It's not out yet.
27:00Yeah.
27:01Yeah.
27:02Yeah.
27:03All right, Pardis, it's done.
27:24So you want to go warm up?
27:27Yeah.
27:30So tomorrow morning, we'll just throw in the net, and we'll get some fish in the afternoon.
27:37I hope so.
27:48If I was living in the city, I could never afford a home, let alone an old home and a big old boat.
27:54There's a dream come true, but also a little bit nerve-wracking and sketchy.
28:00She was a priest.
28:10It's definitely steeper than I thought.
28:12I should have cut these poles longer, then it would have been a more gentle slope.
28:16Worst case scenario, she'll come crashing into the second story like a freight train.
28:20I think she'll take the drop, honestly, but who knows.
28:23I'll probably leave a bit of paint behind.
28:24Living out here like this, I've really gotten used to just getting to work and getting the work done.
28:35That does come back to play your n**** sometimes.
28:40That's your hole, boy.
28:41All right.
28:44Only one thing left to do, and that's hook up some ropes.
28:47I need some way to hold the boat back from just sliding down, crushing itself or crushing me.
28:56Ooh, I'm life.
28:57Now that I'm down here underneath this boat, I'm starting to wonder how good an idea this really is.
29:16One of these is supposed to pull on, and the other one is supposed to hold the a** in back.
29:20But, let's see.
29:21I forgot one thing.
29:24The last, the most important thing.
29:29They say it's bad luck to put a boat in the water that's not christened.
29:32God bless this boat.
29:34God bless Gallows Harbor.
29:37That's bad luck.
29:39That goes...
29:41Ooh!
29:44Let me try that again.
29:47God bless this boat.
29:48God bless Gallows Harbor.
29:52Well, we're cursed.
29:54We're going to the bottom.
29:56It's going to be a wet one.
29:59All right, little girl.
30:00This is it.
30:02We hope it works.
30:03There are no here in a sec.
30:04Okay.
30:18It's working.
30:19I need to see the little friend.
30:24I need to see the little friend.
30:29I need to see the little friend.
30:34Whoo!
30:36Hell yeah.
30:37Look at that.
30:39Soon as she's out in the wild, she looks like a whole different crap all of a sudden.
30:44I'm not an artist, but I mean, look at that.
30:46That's poetry. That's real-life poetry.
30:48An old, traditional, built Dory, modern times,
30:51built in a hundred-year-old saltbox house that was about to fall down.
30:56Now she's starting to spit out Dory's out of her.
30:59Doesn't get much better than that.
31:01This house is living the dream right now.
31:03So am I.
31:04I know, it's heavy. Come on.
31:16Come on, boys.
31:17It was very heavy for me. It was pretty steep there.
31:22I had to pull first so the dogs would get the pressure release on the harness
31:26and feel that they could go again.
31:28I'm not going to do it alone.
31:31Up, guys. Good job.
31:34Okay.
31:35Okay.
31:37Good boys.
31:43Having the dogs with me here is a big upgrade,
31:45but they are also very unpredictable.
31:50They're not.
31:52You have to be ready to, at some point, they can be like...
31:55Up, up, guys.
31:56Start doing whatever they want to do.
31:58Come on.
32:00Come on, Ico. Stop me.
32:02Okay, up.
32:05Come on.
32:05Okay, up.
32:06Some days they're off.
32:07Some days they're happy.
32:09Good job, guys.
32:11They're not machines.
32:12Huh.
32:13They're animals.
32:18Hey!
32:22Enough!
32:25Guys, come on!
32:26Hey!
32:28Hey!
32:29Mirak!
32:30Guys!
32:30Hey!
32:33Enough!
32:34Enough!
32:39Guys, enough!
32:41Get out of here!
32:44Enough!
32:45No question.
32:46What the f***, Len?
32:47No question.
32:48What the f***, Len?
33:15Enough.
33:16Enough, f*** now.
33:18Okay.
33:25It was pretty stressful.
33:27Mihak wants to be the boss and Jake wants to be the boss.
33:30If they decide they want to kill each other,
33:32they will in a couple of minutes.
33:34So you have to...
33:35Almost home.
33:36...react very fast and try to separate them.
33:39Hi boys, come on.
33:41They're wild animals,
33:43so it's good for what I want them to do
33:46and they're very good at their job.
33:48Almost home.
33:49But, uh...
33:51Almost home.
33:53It can be challenging.
33:59Hop, hop, hop.
34:00Hop, hop, hop.
34:01Good boys.
34:08That was quite the rodeo.
34:10It was almost a perfect run until these guys decided to f*** me up.
34:17But the sled is good.
34:19It worked in the uphill even though it was pretty heavy.
34:22I think I loaded up a little too much.
34:25But it worked.
34:26Yeah, I'm happy I can use that now to do firewood and pull heavy loads.
34:31So, that's the good part.
34:33And the dogs.
34:34I'm a little bit disappointed.
34:37But it's smashing.
34:39It happens.
34:40Well, I woke up this morning and, man, there is so much snow.
34:58One of the biggest snowstorms in this century.
35:02Hey, man!
35:05There's so much snow.
35:06It's crazy.
35:07Got to get my solar panel.
35:12There we go.
35:16Okay.
35:18All right.
35:27Oh.
35:28So much snow.
35:30So I'm glad I put some gaps between the boards.
35:34That was...
35:35That was wise.
35:37There we go.
35:43The screws cannot get through this frozen wood.
35:47It's like steel.
35:48This is not the perfect time to build this kind of platform, but this is the perfect time for me because I want my battery and I want my electricity.
36:07I need a goal. I need a purpose. I need a motivation.
36:09If you don't have a purpose here, you can get mentally lost, honestly.
36:15Yeah!
36:19Woo!
36:20That's good.
36:22Honestly, I have no clue what I'm doing.
36:24But I like to improvise.
36:26Even if it's not maybe the best idea ever.
36:29I just, you know, I like a good challenge.
36:36I feel excited.
36:40Give it a try.
36:42Okay.
36:43Oh, it's working.
36:54But, man, it's heavy.
36:56Oh, man.
36:5860 pounds.
37:01There we go.
37:03Yippee.
37:04There we go, man.
37:14It looks nice.
37:20Just in time for the sunshine.
37:24The battery is on.
37:25And now the last step.
37:27This is pretty cool.
37:293, 2, 1.
37:31Oh, yeah.
37:34Oh, I see some lights.
37:36Oh, yeah.
37:37Christmas tree.
37:38It's working.
37:41This is, wow, such an improvement of this cabin.
37:46It's like everything is now possible here.
37:49Lights, fridge, music, radio, bring it on.
37:54But not too much, though, you know?
37:56Because, man, it's still a cabin.
37:58I really want to keep it simple also.
38:02Simple, but easy living.
38:07Oh, wow.
38:09This is beautiful.
38:11You know, the more I work on this cabin,
38:14the more it gets beautiful.
38:16This is great.
38:18Yeah.
38:20It's magic.
38:21The ice is around four inches thick just from overnight.
38:22This is the way it is when you're out on the land.
38:23It's never just comfortable.
38:24You're always going to be uncomfortable and facing the harsh elements.
38:25This is the price that you've got to pay to be able to eat off the ground.
38:26You're always going to be uncomfortable and facing the harsh elements.
38:27This is the price that you've got to pay to be able to eat off the ground.
38:31And harvest.
38:32Hopefully, we'll get something.
38:34I can't really be of much use to you.
38:35The ice is around four inches thick just from overnight.
38:42This is the way it is when you're out on the land.
38:45It's never just comfortable.
38:47You're always going to be uncomfortable and facing the harsh elements.
38:51This is the price you got to pay to be able to eat off the land and harvest.
38:56Hopefully we'll get something.
38:58I can't really be of much use to you.
39:00Yep.
39:01I'll just tie it.
39:03Because I'm not indigenous and I don't have a commercial fishing license, I'm not allowed
39:07to put in a fishnet.
39:11That's something that Gilbert is allowed to do as an indigenous person.
39:17Right here is good.
39:19I'm very respectful towards that.
39:21I warm up my hands first.
39:22Here, come here.
39:24This one's frozen.
39:26But I do wish I could help Gilbert more.
39:29Yeah.
39:30Is it warming up?
39:31Yeah, it's warming up.
39:33Because I'm trying to feed my family.
39:37And this is a part of Ontario that you can't rely on the store to feed your family.
39:43Just tie it like this.
39:45Good.
39:46It's ready.
39:47Shit, it's already frozen here.
39:48I know.
39:49You're going to pull the rope?
39:50Why don't you just tell me if it tangles up and I'll come back?
40:03I'll show you right now.
40:05I'm going to take the bottom here.
40:06I'm going to put it in here.
40:07I'll show you all the time.
40:08I'm going to put it in here.
40:10So, I'm going to tie the bottom here.
40:12there you go that's it that's it that's all we just wait that was a lot of work
40:42we're gonna create this little shelter that's gonna block the wind from coming in
40:54we've been out here already in the minus 40s and now it's that much colder it's minus 52
41:03there's wind and gilbert's gonna be pulling out really cold fish out of the water
41:08so you're just helping you so that's gonna take a while and the risk of him having a frostbite on
41:18his hands are pretty high so you know we want to make sure to try to keep warm as best we can
41:23it's a nice spot we just put the net there I'm gonna start the here oh there's a fish already
41:35oh my god that's a huge one oh my god oh my god
41:43oh
41:47what
41:49oh wow wow look at the face
41:57whoa I'm like scared to gut that thing
42:02I don't know if I've ever seen a trout that thing
42:08I don't know if Sparky's shaking because he's cold or excited
42:12are your hands okay
42:15we're almost done the net so we got three damn I thought we were up there you go we started off
42:29strong I'm happy it's a successful netting we didn't get quite as much as we thought but we
42:39didn't get zero so the one big fish probably gonna feed us for a couple days food off the
42:45land like it's medicine it's really important that our kids eat that because that's what's
42:51gonna keep them strong and healthy
