00:00:00deep a special two-hour premiere oh looks like we broke the ledge in the solution channel oh yeah
00:00:05that's it for sure if we're gonna hit this is the one that should pay whoo who's that it could be a
00:00:10gold or a silver coin in the original money pit found this item on the drill bit in 1849 and i
00:00:14believe this is your one thing rick this may be what lies below that's a game changer fiona just
00:00:20found this no way early stuff we're changing notice course in history really hit something
00:00:25hard so i'm gonna pull it up please do could we hit a vault we're hoping to find a coin something
00:00:29what is that that's a chunk of metal it's very thick no we may be onto something see how shiny
00:00:33that is oh my god i can confirm that it is silver likely from 1367 to 1383. does that look like a
00:00:39templar cross yeah it does yeah it's real there is an island in the north atlantic where people have
00:00:48been looking for an incredible treasure for more than 200 years so far they have found a stone slab
00:00:56with strange symbols carved into it man-made workings that date to medieval times and a lead cross
00:01:03whose origin may be connected to the knights templar to date six men have died trying to solve the mystery
00:01:11and according to legend one more will have to die before the treasure can be found
00:01:31so here we are again on our way to oak island how y'all feeling well it's exciting because i'm basically
00:01:38satisfied that something happened on oak island that's outside of recorded history we're finding
00:01:44more things that say that the legend is true absolutely for brothers rick and marty lagina
00:01:50their partner craig tester and the members of their team a new chapter in the world's longest running
00:01:56treasure hunt is about to begin on oak island for me i just want it solved and i do believe there'll be
00:02:04success this year yeah beginning in 1795 when three young men first discovered an ingeniously
00:02:12designed shaft that reached more than 90 feet deep known as the money pit generations of treasure hunters
00:02:21have tried and failed to uncover a legendary fortune and now after spending more than a decade
00:02:28finding clues that suggest a vast treasure is indeed hiding deep below ground rick marty craig and their
00:02:36team are determined to write the definitive chapter of the oak island mystery and away we go
00:02:45we begin the new year with this mission statement let's solve it let's find the answers we're here
00:02:53our hopes are as high as they've ever been then i'm really and truthfully pretty excited about it hey
00:02:59everybody we're back hey we walk into the museum everyone's smiling there's a certain energy in the room
00:03:09there's a sense of commitment hey partner and i draw inspiration from them welcome everybody
00:03:16back to the quest right yeah so let's start with this if you try and make sense out of everything
00:03:23other people have done and what we've done the last 12 years what makes sense is that the treasure has
00:03:28gone even deeper than the money pit and it's now in the solution channel that's right in 1804 a large
00:03:36stone bearing strange carved symbols was discovered in the center of an oak platform exactly 90 feet deep
00:03:43in the money pit upon its removal the shaft flooded with seawater that was fed from a reported
00:03:50cobblestone tunnel that originated 500 feet away at smith's cove over the next two centuries numerous
00:03:58companies of treasure hunters dug more than a dozen adjacent shafts and tunnels all in the hoax
00:04:04of bypassing the belief booby trap and recovering whatever had been so skillfully buried at the bottom of
00:04:10the money pit each one fell victim to flooding and cave-ins this resulted in the ground across the
00:04:18money pit area becoming unstable and prone to collapse one year ago rick marty craig and the team
00:04:27believed that their efforts to solve the mystery would finally pay off after groundwater testing pinpointed
00:04:34a large source of precious metals more than 100 feet underground they began digging a series of seven
00:04:42foot diameter steel shafts what is that but while recovering numerous artifacts including digging tools
00:04:48that predated 1795 we found this concrete and also obtaining possible evidence of a treasure vault nearly 160 feet deep
00:04:58stop it's caving it's caving all the way back the earth beneath two of the shafts known as tv1
00:05:08and tot1 suddenly collapsed this has led the team to suspect that the treasure has now fallen to more than 200
00:05:17feet deep and now lies in a natural feature in the bedrock known as the solution channel a geological term
00:05:24for a large cavity that forms over time due to limestone dissolving in groundwater i am just really
00:05:31really enthusiastic that it resides deeper and with that scott you've been doing a ton of work on that
00:05:36why don't you tell us the thoughts on that so as you know we want to look in the solution channel to
00:05:41try to find the treasure yeah so steve and i sat with rick and we've came up with a drill program this year
00:05:46so steve you want to bring up the map there and we'll talk about the holes that we want to do okay
00:05:51so now we're looking at a map of the solution channel the green is the solution channel yes
00:05:57so my understanding of the solution channel is between anywhere between 150 and 220 feet
00:06:02is a moving mud river with different different depths yes so it's not a mud river it's a gold river
00:06:10now the total area in the solution channel is less than five percent that we've actually explored
00:06:15so scott nine rick sat and discussed this and this is what that map looks like
00:06:21so we're going to start the boreholes this year in around top one okay well these are the holes rick
00:06:27you want to drill the green things yep what i want to do is systematic drilling we're going to drive the
00:06:33casing down around 210 feet because we want to explore the solution channel at depth so if we found
00:06:41something with the drilling program we would then turn over to this gleeful planning of a recovery
00:06:47of absolutely that would be fabulous okay so that wraps up the first part of this discussion about the
00:06:51money pit now i think that is the focus of treasure but fiona and laird would say wait a minute there's a
00:06:58lot more to this story as far as what actually happened on this island so laird i'll kick it over to
00:07:05you and why don't you pick up and summarize all that yeah we're really excited about getting back
00:07:09to lot five given all of the artifacts we found and we're starting to see that story on lot five expand
00:07:16within itself the soils from the round feature and feature two the rectangular feature that matched the
00:07:24soils from the area of the money pit at depth and to me that's huge absolutely after acquiring lot five
00:07:33from the estate of robert young in 2022 the oak island team discovered a rounded stone foundation
00:07:40near the shoreline and another rectangular feature several yards to the south both had been deliberately
00:07:48buried and have produced astonishing clues that suggest they were related to the money pit and were
00:07:54used by multiple groups as base camps between the 14th and the 18th centuries these finds include a
00:08:01mortar-like substance matching soil samples unearthed from more than 100 feet deep in the money pit area
00:08:09a lead barter token which just like the 14th century lead cross that was recovered at smith's cove
00:08:15in 2017 may be connected to the medieval order of the knights templar several venetian trade beads
00:08:24as well as two garment buttons that have been matched to the kinds worn by members of the knights of malta
00:08:30a group who descended from the templar order and were known to have inhabited parts of nova scotia
00:08:36as early as the 1630s we haven't been able to find another feature in nova scotia that matches what's
00:08:44happening on lot five yeah so this year we're hoping to expand our excavations around the round feature
00:08:52that will give us even more insights into the who what where and why on lot five right
00:08:59look everybody knows that i think the research is an important facet of our work so we have been
00:09:06actively engaged in following the clues we have come to learn of to date that includes possible templar
00:09:12connections certainly the knights of malta connection yep ever since the laginas and craig tester began their
00:09:20quest to solve the oak island mystery in 2006 they have been investigating the incredible theory that
00:09:28the order of the knights templar and related groups began transporting priceless religious treasures from
00:09:34europe to oak island as much as 800 years ago oh wow and during the past several years they have visited
00:09:43numerous former templar strongholds in countries such as france scotland portugal italy and malta where
00:09:54they have seen amazing evidence that it could be true there's something there that you might recognize
00:10:00yeah four dot cross evidence such as symbols meant to represent religious artifacts that have also
00:10:06been found over the years on oak island it's just absolutely incredible tunnels that match the reported
00:10:14design of those found deep underground in the money pit area the stone path looks exactly like this and
00:10:21even a stone road in portugal that is nearly identical to one they themselves unearthed in the oak island swamp
00:10:27back in 2020. so the research continues to evolve and i think there's a real chance that it will be
00:10:36highly enlightening i love it i'm very enthused because i think there is potentially an answer this
00:10:44year as to why we haven't found this treasure at least in the money pit i want to get to the bottom of
00:10:49that so we got a lot to do we got the team to do it yeah yep so i'm eager to get started jack's eager to
00:10:55get started he's got some stuff at home he's finishing up on i see a lot of eager faces yeah
00:11:00for me it's always about you guys about the people we cannot throw science at this we can throw
00:11:06technology at this but look at each other and realize that within each of us that's where the
00:11:11real importance lies let's figure out who what when where why and how let's really commit ourselves to
00:11:17doing that all set yep i do know one thing the answers aren't in this room well let's get going
00:11:24you're here let's do it let's make it so
00:11:30hola i see we're drilling following the team's meeting in the interpretive center rick lagina and
00:11:38craig tester join other members of the team in the money pit area as their first core drilling operation
00:11:45of the summer has begun in borehole j6 a borehole located just five feet south of the seven foot
00:11:53diameter tot1 shaft which was dug one year ago it was at that location where the team recovered pickaxe
00:12:01more than 160 feet deep that was dated to as early as the 16th century and it was also where a massive
00:12:09cave in occurred at nearly 180 feet that caused tons of earth and possible valuables to fall into
00:12:16the solution channel more than 200 feet underground we're down only about eight feet just the very
00:12:23first run it's the beginning but i mean i think this is a really good bet we're going to find some
00:12:27treasure in this solution channel what you gotta do is find one thing one thing the strategy this
00:12:33year for the money pit is to figure out where that treasure went way deep where did it fall into
00:12:40the so-called solution channel and what is also different from the other years is we are absolutely
00:12:44going deep with every one of them 200 feet maybe even more if everything works out we got a good
00:12:50chance of finding something here we're about to find artifacts and be searching at a level well below
00:12:54where any seeker has gone all the more reason to keep a really close eye on these course because
00:13:00the slightest thing might be the most important thing time's going to tell us a little deeper
00:13:07as the core drilling operation continues in the money pit area later that afternoon hey hey how are
00:13:16you all right rick lagina his nephew peter fernetti and a metal detection expert katya drayton arrive on lot
00:13:25five where archaeologist laird niven and alex lagina are investigating the mysterious rounded
00:13:32feature near the shoreline we thought we'd come over and see if we can help yeah the artifacts we
00:13:39found there are all concentrated on the west side between the rectangular feature and the round feature
00:13:45so i'd be really interested in having to go carefully over the east side i'm excited to see what we
00:13:51could find here thank you laird you're welcome there's always the hope that you will find some
00:13:56piece of the puzzle that will tell you the whole story of what happened as to when this occupation
00:14:01occurred who was here and what were they doing i would say that's one i would say right in there
00:14:21let's try it with the pin pointer now that we're deeper come out come out
00:14:33let's try that's the last of it yeah
00:14:48heavy what do you think heavy it's got some weight to it yeah it's not light some sort of fastener
00:14:58not modern no no it's interesting to be that far away right yeah because they're looking for clues
00:15:03as to what else might be here lot five is certainly interesting this faster is it possible that it's
00:15:13evidence of a structure or structures sure the story of lot five continues to expand i don't
00:15:20know that we're even close to having an answer yet a possible iron fastener because the team has made
00:15:27similar discoveries in both of the nearby foundations could rick's notion that this may be evidence of
00:15:33another potential structure be correct so that's a bag and tag for sure and that's a ct scan object
00:15:41and i will tell us what that is no question about it sounds great good fun easy all right good digging
00:15:46thank you go see if there's anything else in there as the investigation on lot five continues
00:15:53here we go down into the solution chamber and while the core drilling operation proceeds deeper
00:16:00in the money pit area over on the eastern end of the island at smith's cove let's go find something
00:16:07guys billy billy's here marty lagina craig tester and metal detection expert gary drayton join billy
00:16:15gearhart to further investigate the massive collection of spoils from last year's excavations in the money pit
00:16:21area hey billy this whole pile came out of the caissons what we know is though it came from deep in
00:16:28the money pit area yeah and we found that old iron i mean that old iron went back to the 1600s yeah
00:16:35what is that this looks like it's part of a tool after finding the potentially 16th century pickaxe
00:16:41during the excavation of tot1 at the end of last year's search that could be a really old tool
00:16:47mate yeah the team began scouring through the money pit spoils that were deposited here at smith's
00:16:52cove and incredibly they found an iron chisel that was dated to the same approximate era
00:17:00whenever there's a lot of iron there's a possibility of iron masking there could be a gold or a silver
00:17:04coin waiting for us mate all right well let's get going yeah now the team is continuing to search the
00:17:12remaining spoils in the hopes of recovering more artifacts or evidence of treasure this might be
00:17:19some thing i can see it just can't pull it out try and get over there yeah you can see it sticking out
00:17:31the hole where is it right there yep got him there it is what you got marty what is it what's that
00:17:46woohoo well that's interesting
00:17:48what you got marty a pin i don't know if it's older yeah craig that looks old yeah that's smith's
00:18:00cove while searching spoils excavated for more than 180 feet deep in the money pit area last year
00:18:07marty lagina and other members of the team have just uncovered another potentially important clue
00:18:14yeah that's wrought iron i think yeah it's old i don't know i wonder if it's a possible cribbing
00:18:21spike no i think it is like when you're building cribbing like cribbing for a shaft or something
00:18:26yeah a possible cribbing spike potentially used to connect large beams of wood together
00:18:34because no previous searchers were known to have built shafts that deep underground could the team have
00:18:40found more evidence of the original money pit if so what else is still waiting to be discovered in
00:18:47these spoils so this should be good yeah i'll probably need this digging out it might be on edge
00:18:54we're all on edge right right right there
00:18:58see that area there try pinpointing
00:19:06now it's there that was a little bit off oh here we go that's more like it
00:19:11that is a tool of some kind look at that yeah wow that is unusual
00:19:20that's got the look of being old as well yeah it is there's no question it's not new
00:19:26definitely has some heft to it i thought it was like a chisel when i first picked it up it could
00:19:30be yeah chiseled in the tunnels and yeah i'm not surprised at all at what came out of that spoils
00:19:36pile that could be very significant once again possible proof that somebody other than searchers
00:19:42were way deep in the money pit still we have to keep going through the spoils carefully because
00:19:47anything here could be something that could be very significant
00:19:50and we've picked up where we left off last year we were finding great old tools artifacts in these
00:19:56spoils and we have just pulled up another one which could potentially go back to 1600s or older
00:20:02yeah okay i'll bag it nice one billy another good artifact right finally a decent fight not bad
00:20:11not bad not bad at all good digging guys yeah i mean the gold's still in there right oh yeah it is
00:20:18that's the hope
00:20:24the following day while the drilling operation continues in the money pit area
00:20:32there are moments around this table that have been really quite impactful in terms of our understanding
00:20:37of this mystery and today is one of those days in the war room doug kroll has arranged for the
00:20:43laginas and members of the team to meet with a man he has been corresponding with for several months
00:20:48named steve solomon oh i'm really excited to say we have a really special guest with us today
00:20:54steve solomon steve is prepared to present what doug believes could be a major breakthrough
00:21:00in the 230 year old treasure mystery well steve's got something to reveal to us today
00:21:06about the gentleman by the name of james hit blade oak and a really prominent oak island family
00:21:11the archibald family well steve is a member of that archibald family interesting charles you and
00:21:17i have talked about this so-called pibleto incident forever right so tell everyone what the pibleto
00:21:24incident is about well james pibleto was a foreman with the true company and they were here from about
00:21:301849 to 1851 and there was an incident that happened in the original money pit
00:21:36in the summer of 1849 members of the true rope company conducted the first major excavation of
00:21:45the money pit since it had flooded after the removal of the 90-foot stone back in 1804
00:21:52after constructing a platform nearly 30 feet deep in the shaft which was still flooded below company
00:21:58foreman james pibleto oversaw a drilling operation to find out what might be buried below the 90-foot level
00:22:06incredibly at 98 feet a hard wooden surface was penetrated before the auger bit passed through
00:22:14what was described as nearly two feet of loose metal pieces another hard wooden surface and then another
00:22:21two feet of loose metal the workers excitedly suspected the two stacked treasure chests were buried some 100
00:22:29feet deep in the money pit upon extracting the auger bed james pibleto was seen removing a reported
00:22:37shiny object from its tip but when confronted he would not reveal what it was to anyone on the island
00:22:45so pibleto approached a gentleman by the name of charles archibald and they attempted to buy the eastern end of the island
00:22:53so whatever was found on that auger enticed him to leave his job and attempt to purchase the eastern
00:23:00end of the island so it had to be something really significant wow charles dixon archibald was a
00:23:07businessman from londonderry nova scotia who served as the manager of a mining company named acadian ironworks
00:23:14curiously members of his family had helped to finance an earlier search for treasure on oak island
00:23:20in 1804 after meeting with james pitt blado the two approached landowner john smith one of the three
00:23:27young men who originally discovered the money pit in 1795 and offered him a considerable sum to acquire
00:23:35the eastern end of oak island the proposal was refused and no one has ever confirmed what was found
00:23:42by james pitt blado after that incident they went to the town of lunenburg and put in an application
00:23:49and this is an excerpt out of that application to dig on oak island having been represented to me
00:23:55that certain persons have discovered the situation of certain hidden treasure beneath the surface of
00:23:59the earth on oak island and then it goes on with the legal stuff for the town person to sign it and
00:24:04and it's on this particular day charles archibald this was from 1849 interesting so i want to talk a
00:24:11little bit more about the family but first i would like to show you what contributed to this uh application
00:24:16and i believe this is your one thing rick i know you've been looking for this for years wow i am on
00:24:21the edge of my seat i'll hold it up so marty can see it oh this is a coin this is a silver portuguese
00:24:35coin that's what came out of the hole yes this was a coin that was passed on from the archibald family
00:24:42my mother-in-law was given this by great nana edith archibald and it was given to me from my own
00:24:47research i believe it's from about 1367. i mean that's incredible right like in every sense of the
00:24:55word yes in the war room steve solomon a man with historic family ties to the oak island treasure hunt
00:25:03has just presented rick marty and the team with a potentially 14th century silver portuguese coin
00:25:09a coin that he believes was retrieved from some 100 feet deep in the money pit back in 1849.
00:25:17how big is that what's the diameter say a little bigger than a quarter i mean i was just wondering
00:25:23how such a thing would be carried up by the auger but that easily could be yeah over the winter marty
00:25:28we researched what a pod auger looked like and its dimensions are more than enough to allow a coin to
00:25:34settle into the mouth of the bed the coin is spectacular it's quite beautiful artfully made
00:25:42hand struck well that certainly raises an eyebrow doesn't it it's a very smallish coin it's the kind
00:25:49of thing that would get stuck in a drill bed we want to confirm what type of coin it is of course but
00:25:55the condition of that coin is quite remarkable for something that's been around since the late 1300s
00:26:00yeah thinking about the treasure being deposited way back it's also if it was in circulation it
00:26:05would be all worn off right it just looks to be it's in really good shape yeah the fact that it is
00:26:11in such good condition might represent that it came up out of say one of the sealed cases where it's been
00:26:16sealed for many years and has not been subject to any of the water dirt elements i mean what caught my
00:26:22imagination was that this coin was portuguese right and and what theories that we've been looking at
00:26:27that might involve the portuguese we're of course we're looking at the templars finding sanctuary
00:26:32in portugal and and christ involving into the knights of christ yeah of course the catholic military
00:26:40order known as the knights templar were formed in the early 12th century to fight for christian
00:26:46interests in the holy land during the crusades they amassed great wealth by establishing an elaborate
00:26:53banking system but were also rumored to have discovered priceless religious artifacts including
00:26:59the holy grail and the ark of the covenant in 1307 they were disbanded and persecuted by king philip
00:27:06the fourth of france and pope clement v on charges of heresy many were arrested and executed but much of
00:27:14their treasures were never found the order rebranded themselves where they could find refuge in countries
00:27:21such as portugal where they were known as the knights of christ in 2021 when rick lagina and other
00:27:28members of the team visited former templar related strongholds across portugal the circle and the dot
00:27:34in the center of the cross that's one of our symbols on the joe stone they were stunned to see numerous
00:27:40stone carvings matching symbols that have been found on oak island is it possible that after nearly two
00:27:47decades into their quest for answers the team is finally looking at a genuine piece of the treasure
00:27:53that people have been seeking for 230 years so i i think what happened was people found this item on
00:28:01the drill bit and he goes to charles dixon archibald who had the acadian mining company at the time he
00:28:08says listen there's treasure on that island and here's the proof and then we know
00:28:13by the paperwork that steve has that it is charles dixon archibald that was approached by pit blado
00:28:21pit blado went to him and he showed him something so convincing that he took these steps to try and
00:28:26take over the treasure hunt on the island yep the only thing that got in their way was they were given
00:28:32the right to hunt for treasure on oak island on unoccupied lands well we know the true company maintained
00:28:38their license on the money pit so while they gained right to hunt on the island they didn't gain right to
00:28:42hunting the money pen this is a really thrilling and exciting thing that's happened on oak island
00:28:48and the story all makes sense it really does it's difficult to make up a story like the pit blado
00:28:55story itself this coin is singularly unique in terms of its importance for one simple reason there is a
00:29:02narrative associated with the coin we have an artifact and we have a possible association with that famed
00:29:10incident the pit blado incident that's quite convincing to give him obviously more credibility
00:29:16the way this coin ended up in my possession is the direct line from the archibald family so when steve
00:29:23approached us we wanted to see if the framework was truly there for this coin to have been passed down
00:29:27from pip blado to steve's branch of the family that you see in this chart
00:29:32charles dixon maybe was left with that coin because he had to go to the government and secure a treasure trove
00:29:40license and all of that charles dixon archibald was related to thomas archibald and when charles dixon
00:29:47archibald kind of left the province pretty much for good in the 1850s and he died in 1868 if he had
00:29:54left that coin behind with the members of the family that are still here in the province then it's very
00:29:58plausible that it came down through steve's family and the pit blado family members of that family
00:30:04were actually married into the archibald's over time they were yeah this is quite something this coin
00:30:11has been with the family for three years i think it came up in 1849 i do
00:30:20and it's bent too yeah it is slightly bent my question is can the heat that's generated by that auger
00:30:27could this have been picked up and by a slight amount of heat potentially have curled having
00:30:32drilled a lot of stuff anything powerful enough to drill through oak and a cask is powerful enough
00:30:38to bend the coin yeah yeah it adds credence to the story yeah i think this all makes sense and it has
00:30:44a high likelihood of being the object that was found if anybody's head isn't reeling like mine as to
00:30:52what theory this fits yeah i mean come on yep if it's true about the loose metal there could be a
00:30:59coin in there from 1307 right after the knights templar disband or even earlier crusade times right
00:31:06because there's nothing that precludes them from adding to their treasure cache over time we know
00:31:12the work the carbon dates here on the island we call it a multi-generational attempt but there might have
00:31:17been a series of operations needed to set this in motion this could be part of a generational event
00:31:25correct yeah our modern minds think we can traverse half the globe in an afternoon back then if there
00:31:32was a plan initiated to save or protect something they they understood that it was a transatlantic voyage
00:31:40months just in the sailing months again if not years in the final completion of the task my biggest
00:31:48problem with it is i wish i had seen it come out of the drill bit of course my favorite thing about
00:31:53it is that everything if we just assume that all of it is true then that really focuses our dig we believe
00:31:59the area we're investigating this year could we bring it to the lab and have emma do some metallurgy look at
00:32:05it and render an opinion of course is that coin 51 likely or better that that's the coin that could
00:32:12blado found i on the jury would vote yes i think the data is it compelling let's go aggressively look
00:32:20for this treasure down deep because that's where it must have gone i agree yep if this coin were 100
00:32:27known to be what came out of the money pit it's the strongest thing we've ever found and i think we're
00:32:32looking at with a high degree of probability the coin that was found that day so many years ago to me
00:32:39it's proof that something is at the bottom of the money pit there's nothing like that moment you see
00:32:48it you hold it in your hand you know how close you are to the one thing it's a real reason to be hopeful
00:32:56this even though there's some blanks that have to be filled in this very possibly is what lies at
00:33:04the depth of the money pit and how many years have we spent talking about what lies below
00:33:10this may be what lies below yeah we can't say thank you enough big time yes very much so thank you
00:33:19appreciate it yeah thank you let's move forward we hit the bedrock plateau in j6 we're down to 178
00:33:28right now we're still in bedrock we haven't popped out into the open solution channel let's hope we're
00:33:33going to pop out short yeah yeah after the incredible revelation of the 14th century portuguese coin
00:33:41in the money pit area operations manager scott barlow charles barkhouse geologist terry matheson
00:33:48and surveyor steve copptill eagerly monitor the progress of borehole j6 so we've hit the ledge
00:33:55we're going to hopefully get down through the ledge we're going to get back down into the solution
00:33:59channel and look for that treasure hopefully we find something down below because as we saw with
00:34:03the ot1 we found material made by man deeper absolutely because the drill has passed through
00:34:10the ground soil and is currently cutting through rock it is terry's belief that they're drilling
00:34:16through an outcropping or ledge of bedrock and that the solution channel will hopefully be encountered
00:34:22several feet deeper below we came into this year not so much looking today to collect anymore but treasure
00:34:29hunt absolutely yeah you know steve solomon brought a portuguese point to the island right
00:34:35yeah i'm excited about that coin i mean if we find a coin deep in the solution channel predating
00:34:40searchers that's huge right yeah absolutely if there's something down there this is where we're
00:34:45going to find it yeah we got to cross our fingers oh did we break through i don't know
00:34:53it looks like we broke through the ledge into the solution channel the rods just started going down
00:35:01pretty quick there oh yeah that's it for sure that's it as the drill comes down and encounters a bedrock
00:35:07ledge it really pushed through there it fell down deeper so we know the solution channel has got some
00:35:13hidden cavities in it on our ledges we're waiting for that next core to come up hopefully containing
00:35:17some treasure so the rest of this should be very interesting we'll see if there's any of that debris
00:35:21field that we're looking for the falling treasure yeah okay guys i've got some other things i got
00:35:26to go check on so please keep me informed what's gonna happen i'm really excited about what may be
00:35:29down here of course i think we're only in the infancy of trying to understand the solution channel
00:35:35i don't know what's in there i know what we found to date in it it is quite compelling we have to have
00:35:41patience because we believe whatever was above fell to those depths thank you 178 178
00:35:51thank you so here's the bedrock from 168 down to 178 and here's the little bit of mud where we opened
00:36:04up into the solution channel where we popped out let me a scaffold thank you every hole is a little mini
00:36:13treasure hunt in and of itself what i would like to do is to find something the one thing and then
00:36:20immediately turn our resources to a large scale recovery effort clear anyway we're gonna go another
00:36:2620 feet uh now from 178 to probably finish at 198 and we'll see what we got then we'll have an artifact
00:36:33of three could be the one thing charles you never know yeah what we're really looking for is treasure
00:36:39that could be sitting in a pocket at the bottom of solution channel in around 210 feet
00:36:43so every sloppy mess we see in those cores becomes exciting wait
00:36:56so yeah it's soft and i hit something hard yeah this is the pay zone we're really very hopeful about
00:37:02very good recovery in this zone okay that's good how deep what's your what's your depth kyle uh 188
00:37:08188. excellent
00:37:15he's hung up right now on something hard at that 188 level i mean that's the whole reason
00:37:20we're drilling right here absolutely the next core samples it will it will what i'd really like to see
00:37:27as a coin or an artifact that says treasure that's what we need your mind goes to all kinds of
00:37:34possibilities that as we're drilling down in the money pit area going to the solution channel could
00:37:39we hit a vault we're hoping to find a jewel a coin something that changes the ball game here completely
00:37:45we have a core gentlemen hopefully we get something here here's hoping
00:37:49what we got kyle 188 188. thank you see what we got
00:37:59as the drill goes down if it hits something hard the hope is that we will find the mad made obstruction
00:38:05the actual vaulter treasure i mean that's always the hope every single time and i hope at some point
00:38:11it comes to fruition gypsum boulder here at about 185 it's pretty tight not likely what we might run
00:38:20into gypsum is a naturally occurring rocky mineral that is often used in the production of plaster and
00:38:27cement however due to its relatively soft composition it is geologist terry matheson's opinion that it would
00:38:35not explain the obstruction that the drill encountered now's the time we can find an artifact or two absolutely
00:38:50very loose material if we're going to find an artifact it's going to be in something like that
00:38:55absolutely it's a little cakey but anyway okay thank you fellas thanks a lot
00:39:06slush right there so there's some debris that fell off of the wall this is actually bedding so that's
00:39:13not what we really want we did something that was a little harder it's hard to say what we might have
00:39:17run into perhaps the bit pushed it deeper because the team is not finding evidence of the obstruction
00:39:25is it possible that the drill bit made contact with a hard object and perhaps pushed it deeper into the sludge
00:39:32and water filled solution channel if so what was it and might they encounter it again at a greater depth
00:39:39and we're only at 194 so we'll see what happens we're planning on going at least 210 yeah at least 210
00:39:44yeah yeah all right guys i'll get in your way normally when we're drilling if you hit something you can
00:39:50still deflect off but hopefully the drill rod it was able to keep its verticality we're trying to go deep
00:39:57to the bottom of the solution channel and if we can find something then it's a whole different ball game
00:40:05hey guys how are you doing charles terry welcome anything so far no yeah we hit something solid
00:40:13at 190 feet down that may have pushed into the solution channel we have a core what's going on
00:40:22how far did you get 213 213 did you hit bedrock yes sir wow okay this is the whole angelata then okay
00:40:34okay okay let's cut this right about here
00:40:42it's a little firm yeah more than i'd like
00:40:51just a little too dense yeah that's nothing i hope we don't have to drill every inch of that
00:40:59solution channel i hope we find the one thing here shortly but you have to cover the solution channel
00:41:05in its entirety you just got to get after it it's disappointing but we're going to keep mapping out
00:41:11the bottom of that solution channel until we find what we hope we're going to find yep and we'll move on to
00:41:15the next hole that's right a new day begins on oak island and while the core drilling operation
00:41:26continues in the money pit area nearly half a mile to the west on lot five these are the spoil piles
00:41:34from last year of the round feature so i'm really excited to see what we can find here metal detection
00:41:39expert gary drayton and peter frenetti join the archaeology team as they continue to investigate
00:41:46the large stone foundation near the shoreline i mean they're using sifters but sometimes some stuff
00:41:53can go through that quarter inch screen oh give it one last shot today gary and peter have been
00:42:00directed to search through a pile of spoils that were removed last year from the mysterious round feature
00:42:06for any clues that could help determine who occupied it and most importantly why
00:42:15yeah this could be something pete this sounds like it's non-ferrous
00:42:23well i know the rules is we have to stand down for the archaeologists to dig these targets because
00:42:28we're in this special area let me call fiona fiona we got a target oh great
00:42:37because the round feature was designated by the government of nova scotia as a special place
00:42:42in 2024 gary and peter must obtain permission from one of the team's accredited archaeologists
00:42:50before digging up any targets in this area
00:42:53we've got a target here fiona you think it's non-ferrous
00:43:00yeah a little piece of non-ferrous there it's ringing up loud and clear yeah just there please
00:43:05i'm out
00:43:12you know what this you can tell this is in between the spoils pile so
00:43:15this would be something probably more in situ well it's looking like it so far so
00:43:20an in situ target meaning that it is not in the previously removed spoils but rather in the ground
00:43:26near them all right i'll try to pinpoint see what we got
00:43:34if so could gary have identified a new area outside the rounded feature that contains potential clues or
00:43:41evidence of treasure
00:43:46oh look at this yeah i had a feeling it was going to be a little bit of lead
00:43:50tiny little bit of squash lead shot a lead shot or bullet
00:43:55ever since acquiring lot five three years ago the oak island team has unearthed a number of gun related
00:44:02artifacts such as musket balls and a ramrod guide from a rifle that could all date as far back as
00:44:09the 17th century more than 100 years before the discovery of the money pit
00:44:16that probably created somebody's supper one day yeah yeah could the team have just found more evidence
00:44:22of people who may have used this site as a camp while possibly hiding valuables in the money pit
00:44:28if so who were they if that had been a gold nugget now we'd all be dancing should we flag this little
00:44:36area as well yeah i mean that was on the ground so that's great do we last search this yeah no
00:44:41absolutely i think we're just going to try and stay away from any of the perimeter of the features
00:44:45because we're going to still dig there but i think it really would be good to detect on this
00:44:48side because realistically most of the artifacts have all been kind of on the the west side of the
00:44:52feature i find it very strange that we're not finding as many artifacts right here find some
00:44:57treasure in this area go for it no this is perfect so i'm going to get back over here anything we can
00:45:02do to help you guys awesome cheers
00:45:11got something yeah it's iron let's take this out and see what we've got okay just there please
00:45:19hopefully it's a chunky old thing i like my chunky old things especially on lot five lot five is the
00:45:32lot that keeps on giving we're finding artifacts that were here well before the discovery of the money
00:45:38pit so we want to work together with the archaeologists to metal detect and my number one objective for lot
00:45:44five is to get some answers to help the archaeologists tell the story about what's happening in the
00:45:49future and how that relates to the money pit
00:45:58what was making all that noise
00:46:02oh here it is oh what the heck is that
00:46:08that is something i mean look at the shape of it yeah yeah look you see it's got these bumps on it i don't
00:46:14if these are corrosion and it's just encrustation on it or not yeah it looks like it has some sort of
00:46:23shape to it yeah like a design of sorts my first thought was like door hinge almost like the the
00:46:28locking mechanism a piece of a possible door hinge if so could it be related to the nearby rounded feature
00:46:37this could still tell a story and help solve the mystery yeah we're not too far from the around feature
00:46:44the people on lot five would have had locks of some kind they could have had chests and doors that
00:46:51needed locking and i'm looking forward to seeing what the archaeologists dig up about this find
00:46:57got something yeah bigger piece of iron fiona when you get a chance can you come over here
00:47:12sure thank you yeah we're close to the ram feature i like your location over here we haven't found a lot
00:47:18over this side of this round feature well i'm hoping this is something interesting it's an iron it but
00:47:27it's substantial go for it
00:47:29oh that's going to be tricky
00:47:45oh well done wow that's really deep i wonder if i should grab my trowel just i was thinking yeah
00:47:51okay maybe a good idea to trail it out i mean we're in worm tickler territory now
00:47:58okay i'll pinpoint it for you fiona okay
00:48:02oh it's a streamer right there it's really deep yeah it is that's about 10 inches
00:48:11yeah i can see it right here it's and it is a substantial size i just don't want to break it right
00:48:17here's a piece if that looks like glass that's glass that's older stuff then look at the color of
00:48:29it and that's pretty green that's looking like older glass
00:48:39you know what there's all sorts of things down here to be honest i'm seeing some coarse earthenware
00:48:44now too so the fact that the fact that we've got coarse earthenware you've got glass and a big piece
00:48:50of iron i think we need to um not dig this up right now yeah i want to take out just a bit of
00:48:56the roots i think we'll just make it a little bit bigger this may just be a pile of something that
00:49:00got thrown here but what if it's something else yeah what if this is another part of a foundation
00:49:06we are not that far away from this feature because we found the starburst button right over here
00:49:11and which is literally four feet away from us we found the spiral button right over here and that's
00:49:16really really close to to this oh wow this could potentially be part of whatever's going on over
00:49:21this feature another potential section of the mysterious round feature on lot five and mere feet
00:49:29from where the team uncovered two ornate buttons that may be connected to the 17th century order known as
00:49:35the knights of malta a religious order who just like the portuguese knights of christ descended from
00:49:41the knights templar we're in total agreement and a new knows what else is standing well that's what i'm
00:49:48thinking too so we'll we'll hold this for now and if you're okay to keep going with the rest of it for
00:49:53sure due to provincial regulations because fiona believes that gary and peter may have found another part
00:50:00of the rounded feature she and the archaeology team must now perform further excavations of this site
00:50:06to locate the large metal object and whatever else may be buried here now we've found this who knows
00:50:13what else is waiting for us over here this is really encouraging it's treasure time yep as the
00:50:22investigations continue in the money pit area this is just starting to hit gravel and on lot five
00:50:28okay everybody this is the first of what are going to be hopefully a whole bunch of sessions
00:50:34in the lab yeah rick and marty lagina along with other members of the team meet with archaeologist
00:50:40laird niven and archaeometallurgist emma culligan in the oak island laboratory while emma is still
00:50:47conducting scientific analysis of the 14th century silver coin she has prepared a report on the chisel
00:50:55that was recently found in the muddy pits oils from last year's large-scale excavations
00:51:01what did you find out emma all right so the chisel did get a good strip of bare metal from this
00:51:06area right here so i have the compositions up here earlier today emma scanned the iron artifact
00:51:13using an x-ray fluorescence or xrf device a device that emits non-destructive radiation
00:51:20to identify an object's chemical composition which can help determine when it may have been created
00:51:28i think lacks any modern alloying element like manganese or any other element that we normally find
00:51:34which indicate older earlier this is definitively not modern
00:51:40so we would comfortably put it in the 1700s sweet yeah and it could potentially be older
00:51:45well i love those days yeah the chisel is actually very exciting that's before
00:51:51the story of the first treasure hunt efforts on oak island so it could be part of an original deposit
00:51:57it gets interesting it's a great find to start off the year like this you have an old tool
00:52:04found at depth in the money pit this is not the one thing but we're getting there all right
00:52:10i'm satisfied well done we'll get you some more there's gonna be some more fines coming and i'm
00:52:16hoping it's made of gold and silver well as rick always says we gotta go find it yep see you later thank you
00:52:28the following morning
00:52:29hey terry charles hey alex in the money pit area alex flagina joins geologist terry matheson and oak
00:52:38island historian charles barkhouse as they continue monitoring the drawing operation in borehole h.5 8.5
00:52:48what death are we at what they're going to bring up in a second here is from 168 to 170. okay and
00:52:53anything so far or what's coming up right now should be a good clean run there oh here we go come here
00:52:59could be something in the barrel there something sticking out it looks like what you got adam
00:53:06what is that that looks like some steel to me that does that's a chunk of metal yeah
00:53:15a large metal object extracted from nearly 180 feet deep in the solution channel you know finding
00:53:23this piece of metal i mean he's very excited because we're not sure what it is anything below 150
00:53:28is a really interesting level for us to search because we don't know the exact location of the
00:53:34original money pit i don't know i don't know what that is interesting hey scott check that out
00:53:41very thick i agree it's really substantial you know we may be on to something yeah let's spit it out
00:53:53spit it out yep we're drilling down pretty deep here at this point in the solution channel
00:53:59first thing we need to do is get it out of there and have a look and see what it is
00:54:06it's still sitting right there
00:54:07that's another piece that's another piece
00:54:16see what it is we can take a look on the table yeah
00:54:22a second metal object found in the solution channel the questions that now arise are just
00:54:29what could they be and who may have left them buried in the money pit area
00:54:35what's the depth got 178. so let's have a look here this is the bottom this is where the chunk was
00:54:43sticking right out that looks like a chunk of old drill rod yeah it does that was projecting out the
00:54:53bottom that was what we were looking at just twisted up there pretty tight yeah yeah look at that another
00:54:58chunk yeah i'd say you're you may be looking at the whole piece right there though full enchilada the
00:55:06whole chunk you know what i mean like it was very small then it's buckled a couple of ways yeah this
00:55:10is good somebody else was here in this area we know other treasure hunters throughout the search
00:55:15have come really really close to the point that they got indications that they had hit something yeah
00:55:19and i love finding old drill steel especially here in the money pit because like i said they didn't
00:55:23get the recovery back from that so they never got to check what's below that yeah interesting it's about
00:55:27the right size to be a two inch diameter casing which could have been the casing for that pot auger
00:55:32potentially brought back that silver coin we saw yeah yeah so actually james pitflato he was seen
00:55:38taking something out of the pot auger he put it in his pocket he didn't show up the next day hey and
00:55:43you know another reason for casing to still be in the ground is if your driller quits and walks off
00:55:47the site because it found something that's right look i think emma's going to be able to test this
00:55:53and tell us whether this dates to the 1840s right on if it does and it means we're we're in the same
00:55:58vicinity if that dates to 1849 yeah yeah the fact that the team has found pieces of what appeared to
00:56:05be drilling rods from previous searcher activity may actually be a critical clue that they are now
00:56:11drilling down through the original money pit we might be able to determine which company it came from
00:56:16if it's 1815 earlier earlier searchers knew where the money pit was that means we could be on to
00:56:21something there could be something below it it could be the remains of the vault and then of course
00:56:26178 feet we still have you know 30 plus feet to drill and we really don't know what's at the bottom
00:56:32of the solution channel in this area yet well let's keep our fingers crossed yeah all right exciting good day
00:56:41while the drilling operation continues in the money pit area this is one aid later that afternoon
00:56:51what do you think kenzie have you called anything uh not much over here rick and alex lagina arrive
00:56:59on lot five as members of the team continue investigating the mysterious round feature you still have iron
00:57:06left yeah and a possible new section of it where a large metal object was detected just one day ago
00:57:14there's definitely more in here that's it almost looks like an iron bar what a weird looking artifact
00:57:25would they just have like metal around that they could use to fashion tools with a blacksmith would
00:57:31have a stock it is an odd looking piece so i think we keep it dirty and take it to ammo well it's still
00:57:40pretty cool i'm excited to see what else might be in here good stuff i think lot five continues to
00:57:46evolve we're all quite puzzled by the uniqueness of the structure and it continues to grow larger so all
00:57:53of these artifacts could be highly relevant we have to bring them to the lab we need more of these finds
00:57:58to hopefully fill in those gaps and give us those answers oh what's this hey look at this oh that looks
00:58:11good i don't think i've seen anything like this before i can tell you what it is really yeah
00:58:19stuff is your slipware oh i've heard of that yep yep and this is one of the earliest pieces we haven't
00:58:25found any more of this before so when you say early how early are you talking stuff just slipware is
00:58:30like 1675 to 1770. well that's a game changer alex rick yeah we've got something to show you all right
00:58:42so fiona just found this this is what we call staffer just slipware it dates 1675 to 1770. that's
00:58:52pretty good that's really exciting actually so early stuff we know we're not done here on lot
00:58:58five by a long shot we're finding these earlier artifacts that are hinting at an occupation in the
00:59:031600s in this whole new test pit all of which seem to predate the treasure hunt in the money pit
00:59:10we're going to expand the pit dig down deeper and hopefully we can find more artifacts like that
00:59:15or better who knows what we're going to learn well you can tell our work here is definitely not done
00:59:19on lot five i mean this is starting to intrigue me when you're looking at these date ranges
00:59:23that's really encouraging to me i have to remember this feature is completely undocumented yeah we're
00:59:28changing nova scotian history really oh absolutely i have long believed that the 1750 and onward date
00:59:35is searcher era because of the preponderance of fines if you're a searcher you don't care that people
00:59:41make note of your activity we have the earliest dates around 1200 and then we have that middle ground
00:59:48right the 14 15 early 1600s when you think of it long ago they viewed time differently than we do
00:59:57oh yeah all the big projects like castles cathedrals and all that stuff if you look at generations
01:00:03and so that's what i think happened here could rick's notion be correct is it possible that this
01:00:09potentially 17th century pottery was left by one of several groups who may have occupied lot five
01:00:15while also hiding something of great value in the money pit if so what else might those mysterious
01:00:22people have left here for the team to uncover that's really cool i hope i can find one of those
01:00:28yeah find a big piece i'll work on it believe me i've been trying hopefully we'll find more
01:00:44alex yeah i think i found a no way how in the heck did you find that
01:01:01how in the heck did you find that that's a bead hey laird tansy found a bead oh really yeah
01:01:07oh while excavating the round feature on lot five archaeology assistant tansy rudnicki has just
01:01:16uncovered another potentially important clue honestly i can't believe she even found it it's tiny
01:01:22excellent wow you want me to hand it to him yeah oh drop it
01:01:28there you go oh look at that tansy you found it pretty deep right i mean you're getting close to
01:01:34sterile soil there it looks like yeah moya had found a similar bead almost at the similar depth
01:01:39that you're going to and she found it right over here in what we call the yard but we've also found
01:01:43two other venetian beads which were the striped ones it had blue and red stripes on it those two
01:01:48venetian yeah those are venetians but the other one that to me is the most interesting is the green
01:01:53wound bead that we found over in the test bit over there who found that i found that one yeah
01:01:58that was exciting because that was one that you said had a really old age range or date range on it
01:02:03it's walled glass uh which means forest glass and it was produced in forests in northern europe it was
01:02:09like 1200 to 1500 i mean it was old this believe it or not this is what we call a seed bead i can see
01:02:18why yeah like is it so small for that very reason yeah probably not worn as you would think beads are
01:02:24it's probably embroidered which is pretty cool is there a way to get like an age or a date on it we can
01:02:31probably find if it's most likely venetian but the venetians just kept that tradition up over
01:02:36hundreds of years probably on the earlier side of what we're finding here yeah
01:02:41in 1291 artisans in venice italy began producing decorative glass beads that soon became a highly
01:02:48sought form of currency as well as status symbols used to adorn ceremonial garments jewelry and religious
01:02:56artifacts over the past two years the oak island team has found four venetian trade beads in and
01:03:03around this stone foundation on lot five that could date back to between the 16th and 17th centuries
01:03:10two of which may even be connected to the knights of malta however they have also recovered a so-called
01:03:18forest glass bead in this location which scientific analysis determined could date as far back as the
01:03:2510th century is it getting to the point that it's an unusual amount of beads for a site like this the
01:03:32number of beads and the variety we have seems to be unusual well and they're scattered yeah everywhere
01:03:36i know i know given the number of potentially ancient and valuable trade beads as well as the 14th
01:03:44century barter token that the team has found in this feature is it possible that it may have been used
01:03:51not only as a base camp long ago by different groups of people but also as a place to hide valuables
01:03:58if so what else might the team find as they continue to excavate it hey rick hey i know one thing when
01:04:07people are standing here talking something's been found take a look oh my gosh it's a little
01:04:13seed bead class well congratulations well done yeah one thing that's curious when you speak about going
01:04:21back in time we now have this possible connection to a 1360 1380 portuguese coin can that the date of
01:04:30that go back to that time it could before i think we've investigated who could have come here now we have
01:04:38what appears to be pretty good hints of connected tissue in the form of the coin and we're looking for
01:04:42other things that we might help that connection so like the beads would be one if we can trace these
01:04:47beads back to a portuguese merchant yeah then that helps us have more confidence in in what the coin
01:04:52might be telling us you can see how they're finding that little thing's kind of the tip of the iceberg
01:04:56yeah really the bottom line is there's probably more here yeah and that's cool cool all right you
01:05:01guys can go back to work and take this back to emma okay see what we can find out fair enough try to
01:05:05find more everybody get ready to pull out the gold coins as the investigation on lot five continues
01:05:12all right here we go h.5 8.5 178 to 188 we're going at it right now guys here we go
01:05:22over in the money pit area other members of the team closely monitor the core drilling operation
01:05:27in borehole h.5 8.5 as it reaches deeper into the mysterious solution channel this is a very hot
01:05:35spot for drilling 186 is deeper than any surgeon that we know of has been exactly that's why we're
01:05:41going to look at these areas in much more detail that's a dark water looks like we've got a sample
01:05:51here comes the core here comes see what's in store what you got adam 188 thank you
01:06:09somewhat bedded and firm unfortunately look at that
01:06:14come here at the top thank you very tight clay rich material slightly looser here
01:06:21look at that now this material is different that is loose material
01:06:27although much of the core is made up of hard clay-like material which terry believes is undisturbed
01:06:34the looser soils in the core could suggest evidence of the solution channel which means
01:06:39they could potentially contain something of value i'm going to run over with the metal detector go ahead
01:06:45charles
01:06:50you know thanks steve
01:06:53oh you have something there's something in here right here okay
01:06:57i got a hit right here guys it's in here somewhere
01:07:05look at it it's all shiny there's all that stuff you see how shiny that is okay that's shiny
01:07:11what is that
01:07:12that's it right there yeah that looks like steel
01:07:17does it we'll bag it anyway it looks like bag it yep yep
01:07:23upon drilling to a depth of some 190 feet in the money pit area members of the oak island team have
01:07:30just unearthed another potentially significant clue from the mysterious solution channel okay let's
01:07:35start breaking her down okay this will be a broken piece of metal from what air i don't know
01:07:41something in here and there okay that's it that's it right there more pieces of metal could the team have
01:07:52found additional evidence of previous searcher activity or could this be a clue connected to
01:07:58someone who buried valuables in the original money pit centuries ago so we'll be sure to get every
01:08:04little fragment we're going to bag it all take it back to the left okay guys i'm going to go check on
01:08:09a couple of things here around the island i'll be back if something in that last bar give me a call
01:08:13would you please we'll do take care right now we've got another cork coming up here you know over
01:08:21the years we've looked at a lot of cores we've run the pinpointer over a lot of cores full-on anaconda
01:08:26here but after seeing the coin that steve solomon has 214 right there i mean your mind just kind of
01:08:33goes to the possibility that are we going to get another one of those and that that would be amazing
01:08:37to find the one thing to put in rick's hand okay there we are there's the bedrock interface right
01:08:43there where we go into solid bedrock at 212 but from 201 down to about 208 i think we got a lot of
01:08:51slushing material yeah okay that's clear this material is not what we're looking for yeah not what we're
01:09:02hoping to find let's get a sample of those loose materials back to the lab so that emma can tell us
01:09:06exactly what's in there although the team did not recover clear evidence of treasure in this borehole
01:09:13they will collect samples of the soil from the bottom of the solution channel so that they can be
01:09:17tested for traces of precious metals back in the lab finding those metals that great depth beyond which
01:09:24searchers at least recorded searchers have been to it proves that the collapse is real and that's the
01:09:31enterprise this year to explore those depths to hopefully find what we believe has fallen okay
01:09:38i'll get some pictures and write this up we'll move on charles okay more information from the bottom of the
01:09:44solution champ the following morning while the drilling of a new pore hole begins in the money pit area
01:09:54and the archaeological dig proceeds on lot five you know as everyone knows steve solomon was kind enough
01:10:02to bring this coin to the war room meeting the other day rick lagina and other members of the team
01:10:08meet with archaeometallurgist emma culligan and steve solomon in the lab we turn to emma as we always do
01:10:15to see what the coin is saying to us emma has just completed her scientific analysis
01:10:21of the believed 14th century portuguese coin that was reportedly recovered from the original money
01:10:26pit back in 1849. okay so i've done a full report on the coin it's made of 0.375 silver it's got a high
01:10:37copper high silver content it's got a slight bend right but other than that it's in perfect condition
01:10:44beautiful coin yeah so i can confirm that it is a real portuguese coin it is consistent with every
01:10:53coin that i've compared it to that is confirmed okay support is the escudo of ferdinand the first
01:11:00from portugal most likely from 1367 to 1383 it's real that's called yeah ferdinand the first also known
01:11:09as the handsome reigned as the king of portugal from 1367 to 1383 it was a period when the knights
01:11:18of christ a rebranded order of the knights templar maintained numerous strongholds across
01:11:24the country and had meaningful influence on the crown due to their economic power and military might
01:11:31is it possible that this coin reportedly found deep in the original money pit back in 1849
01:11:40could be another clue linking a vast templar treasure to the oak island mystery
01:11:47emma would you get it larger the bottom of the coin a little bit to the left
01:11:53that looks like a templar cross does it to you guys yeah good catch that's an interesting catch judy
01:12:02because if that's a templar cross the knights of christ they're of course one of our suspects for
01:12:06deposition here on the island a possible templar cross has judy rudibush just made a critical
01:12:13observation that offers more evidence to suggest that the knights of christ may have been one of the
01:12:19templar related groups who buried something of great value on oak island between the 12th and 17th
01:12:25centuries there's a lot of interesting things about the coin that i think we can push further
01:12:34what do you make of a six-pointed star on the sides
01:12:38von der kata von der kata over top of the doorway von der kata over the doorway we might be looking at
01:12:44what i think is you know the oldest templar commandery or place in portugal maybe in europe
01:12:50wow during the team's visit to portugal in 2021 oh wow one of the most profound sites they toured
01:12:57was a 12th century church in the town of front arcana that once served as a house of worship for
01:13:02the knights templar and later the knights of christ we will find symbolism in some details of the church
01:13:10there they not only saw a carving of a star that matches the one on the 14th century coin this
01:13:17symbol is definitely on the 90 foot stone but also a symbol inside the church that was reportedly etched
01:13:23into the legendary 90-foot stone haven't we learned over these many years that the smallest clue relays
01:13:31some really important information there is something that that coin is saying this is incredibly
01:13:36interesting fascinating really this coin strongly hints to me supporting the idea of a multi-generational
01:13:43attempt because for one simple reason we have dates that precede this 1367 date supported by hard
01:13:51science that's quite significant to me the likely presence of this coin at depth years ago means that
01:13:58there's a lot more like it down there and if there's a lot more like it it's quite likely to be deep
01:14:04and i think we're on to a very rational effort this year to get down into the solutionship
01:14:09so we're not going home without doing that yeah look we're all quite fascinated with it well i don't
01:14:14know about all of you but it'd be nice to talk to a coin expert absolutely for sure and you know what
01:14:19steve solomon we owe you a debt of gratitude we're very grateful that you're now unfortunately for you
01:14:24you're part of the family yeah thank you i appreciate being here there are probably a lot more ancient
01:14:31coins to be fun so let's get going
