00:01I feel so little sometimes in this vast world.
00:04Come on guys, hop, hop.
00:06There's so many places to explore, it's like a huge playground.
00:09Woohoo!
00:10I'm so in love with the idea of living here and being here.
00:13Hop, hop!
00:14Hunting and trapping.
00:15It's a part of life up here.
00:17We got one!
00:18Oh yeah!
00:19It's not everyone who get a chance to live this kind of adventure.
00:23I'm about to venture into the unknown.
00:27The life can be very rewarding.
00:29Beautiful.
00:30But the land can also be very dangerous.
00:34I'm wet, I'm wet.
00:35The power of nature is so impressive.
00:37Wind is definitely picking up.
00:39This house is a ticking time bomb.
00:41You have to be smart out here.
00:43Hey!
00:44A musher who loses his sled is a dead musher.
00:47Ah!
00:48Don't move!
00:59I'm gonna go for my first expedition to set some new lines for the trapping season.
01:18So right now I'm boiling my traps.
01:23Traps need to be boiled every year before you start the season just so they're scent free.
01:28I'm putting some spruce valves in there so it smells more natural and it takes away kind of the metal scent.
01:35These traps are gonna be to trap martens.
01:39Martens are pretty small but they get a nice thick fur.
01:44So that's my main target on the trapline.
01:48My main goal this year is to expand my trapline.
01:53Creating more trails where I can go trapping further in the territory.
01:58So this year I'm gonna be traveling and trapping with a dog team.
02:02I have eight dogs here and these dogs are my only way to get to the places I need to go.
02:08Last year I was trapping on skis and snowshoes.
02:12So this year having a dog team is gonna be way more efficient.
02:18I'll be able to go further and be faster and it's gonna be a whole new game.
02:25Right now the days are pretty short and we're losing a lot of daylight
02:29so I cannot really go far and come back before dark.
02:33So tonight I'll be camping out with the dogs.
02:38Michael you ready?
02:39You ready bud?
02:41Nowadays most trappers use snow machine to get around their trapline.
02:44But for me it's more about the lifestyle and having sled dogs and being able to live the way
02:50people were living in the woods a couple hundred years ago.
02:54For me it's very special.
02:57Then when it's time to put the harnesses on it's time to go have fun.
03:01Go for a little run and they love it.
03:04There's a lot of unknown in this trip.
03:06It's a first for these guys to go trapping with me.
03:11So I'm not sure what lies ahead.
03:14I'm sure a lot of challenges but I'm very excited to have them part of this adventure.
03:19Kate you coming?
03:22Kate?
03:23Oh here you are.
03:24Come here bud.
03:25Come here.
03:26It's gonna be the first time for these dogs to go on these trails.
03:29It should be okay but it's mushing.
03:32It goes wrong all the time.
03:34The biggest risk for a musher is to lose your sled.
03:38If I fall and I can't hold on to my sled and my dogs take off without me.
03:42Then it can be pretty dangerous for the dogs.
03:45First of all because if they get tangled or if the sled hit them it can be pretty bad.
03:50And also for me because in this type of environment if it's minus 50 if you lose your dogs in the middle of nowhere and you have no way to go back home.
03:59It can be pretty bad.
04:04Are you excited?
04:05Set dogs are a specific breed that need to exercise way more than a regular pet dog.
04:13They need to run and they want to run so much.
04:15Like it's their entire life is about running.
04:18They love the cold.
04:19They love adventures.
04:21They want to go run and explore and I'm kind of like that too.
04:28Okay boys.
04:29When I'm mushing I'm in a constant discussion with my lead dogs.
04:39I rely on them and they rely on me.
04:41We really have to work as a team.
04:46Good boys.
04:47I use G for right and R for left.
04:50And hop hop means okay let's go guys.
04:52Come on guys hop hop hop.
04:54When I'm mushing my mind is only focused on the dogs and what's around me.
05:00It's kind of a good meditation and just very present in the moment focused on the environment.
05:06It's very peaceful.
05:08Good boys.
05:09Hop.
05:15To get to where I need to go I need to cross this river.
05:18This river is still flowing right now.
05:22There is a thin layer of ice on top that is getting thicker and thicker with the cold temperatures.
05:27So I need to check how thick the ice is to see if it's safe to cross.
05:32With rivers because the water is running fast under.
05:35If you fall and the current sweeps you then you're stuck under the ice and it can be deadly of course.
05:44The ice is too thin here.
05:45The water is right here.
05:47So it's a bad spot to cross.
05:49Too risky.
05:50You have to be smart out here.
05:53Every year you hear new stories about people going through the ice.
05:56So I have to be careful and I don't want to become someone else's story.
06:00I think I found a pretty good path.
06:03It should work pretty good.
06:04The ice is pretty thick.
06:05So I think I'm going to cross here with the dogs and get on my trail on the other side.
06:10Easy boys.
06:11Easy boys.
06:12I'm not mushing on the river.
06:13I want to walk to show them the path.
06:14So they stay where the ice is safe.
06:15Easy boys.
06:16Easy boys.
06:17I'm not mushing on the river.
06:18I want to walk to show them the path so they stay where the ice is safe.
06:20Easy.
06:21Easy.
06:22Easy.
06:23I have to always remember that I'm not riding a machine.
06:24I'm working with animals.
06:26And they are unpredictable.
06:27Stay.
06:28Stay.
06:29Stop.
06:30Guys.
06:31Stop.
06:32I'm working with animals, and they are unpredictable.
06:37Stay! Stay!
06:40Stop!
06:44Guys, stop!
06:59Today, we're going to go set up some traps
07:01to trap some beavers.
07:03The majority of the food that we feed our family
07:06is from the land,
07:07and that's the reality of living here.
07:09But we've been having a bit of a hard time this year,
07:12so we're hoping to have better luck,
07:14get at least one or two,
07:15keep our bellies full, and keep us warm.
07:25Are we never going to test out the ice?
07:27Oh, careful!
07:31You already went through?
07:33Yeah.
07:34We don't know how thick the ice is going to be on the lake,
07:36so we're going to have to be very careful with our snow machine.
07:38It could be very dangerous for us.
07:39We could fall through.
07:42How thick would you say the ice is?
07:43One inch thick.
07:44Oh, yeah, that's not good.
07:45We'd fall through that, eh?
07:46It's very thin ice,
07:47and too much of a risk to take.
07:48The land can be very rewarding,
07:49but the land can also be very dangerous.
07:51The beaver has to step over there,
07:52so we're going to have to go around.
07:53I guess we don't have a choice.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Better safe than sorry.
07:56Pretty thick woods over here, eh?
07:58Yeah, very thick.
07:59We might have to cut a little bit to make a trail.
08:00Bushwhacking time.
08:01Bushwhacking time.
08:11In this cold, everything is a lot harder.
08:14It's harder to breathe, it's harder to work.
08:15I mean, the ground is pretty dangerous.
08:17I mean, the ground is pretty dangerous.
08:17We're a little bit of a little bit of a little bit.
08:18I mean, it's pretty dangerous.
08:19The beaver has to step over there,
08:20so we're going to have to go around.
08:21I guess we don't have a choice.
08:22Yeah.
08:22Better safe than sorry.
08:23Pretty thick woods over here, eh?
08:25Yeah, very thick.
08:25We might have to cut a little bit to make a trail.
08:28Bushwhacking time.
08:29In this cold, everything is a lot harder.
08:30work, so having to cut down some trees is going to take a lot of effort.
08:34We don't have that much hours in the day, and it's really slowing us down.
08:39There's a trail here.
08:44Luckily, we found an old trail, and hopefully that's going to lead us closer to the beaver
08:50hut.
08:51Oh, there it is.
08:56There it is.
08:58There it is.
08:59Look at it.
09:00It's huge.
09:01It's like a mansion.
09:02That's the mansion.
09:03I'm going to check out the ice.
09:06Okay.
09:07Just don't fall in.
09:10Getting wet and getting cold, it's no joke.
09:13You're at a much higher risk for hypothermia, and that can be very dangerous out here.
09:18There's really no ice.
09:21See?
09:22How are we going to get to it?
09:24We're going to put down some trees.
09:26We're going to make a little bridge?
09:28Yep.
09:29It spreads out the weight, but you know she is...
09:33Oh, God.
09:39I'm wet.
09:40I'm wet.
09:41I'm wet.
09:42Oh, no.
09:43Oh, my God.
09:44Man.
09:45Oh!
09:46That was really deep.
09:47I'm wet here.
09:48Like, my coat's wet, so it went up to my hips.
09:49My boots are full of water right now, so my feet are burning right now from the cold.
09:54Yeah, you got to go home.
09:55It's not safe to stay outside in this temperature, so we got to go right back to the cabin and warm up.
10:00We don't have a choice.
10:01Try again tomorrow.
10:02Try again tomorrow.
10:03We're running, and people are on fire going up, so it's not a fire will.
10:32Surviving out here is knowing how to live off the land, to use what's around you.
10:42If you want to exist off grid, you need to hunt.
10:45And it's just a great way to explore.
10:49There is some backcountry that I don't go to often.
10:53What I'm planning to do is to explore, to hunt.
10:57I'll be looking for grouse.
10:58I will be looking for rabbits also.
11:00Well, best case scenario would be to catch something and just to eat it, you know, out of my land.
11:09I am the fourth generation who has this land.
11:14This land was handed down to me by my father.
11:19This place is special.
11:21This place is priceless.
11:22It's amazing.
11:29It's still holding.
11:30This is cool.
11:31It's been a year since I built it.
11:35Last year, I built a bridge to get across the river, to get access to a new part of my land.
11:41It's cold, so I'm very glad I've got this bridge.
11:46Past the bridge, it will be very unfamiliar territory, which I don't go to often.
11:55So, you know, maybe I'm going to make camp there, spend the night.
11:59I will see.
12:00But I still have a long walk to do.
12:01I've packed a bit of food, some snacks, but not much.
12:10I'm counting on the land to provide what I need.
12:17There is three fell down recently, and there is a good place for a rabbit to hide.
12:23They do love this kind of shelter.
12:25So I'm just going to kick this tree to see if there is a rabbit underneath.
12:31No, it could have been, but no.
12:46There is no tracks.
12:48I don't see any rabbits here.
12:57The bush is so thick, man.
12:58That's amazing.
12:59It's like so hard to get through it.
13:01It's been a pretty bad afternoon for hunting, and I'm cold.
13:12Yeah, I'm tired now.
13:13That's enough.
13:14So I will make camp because I know it's going to take a while, and it's getting dark and dark.
13:20It looks pretty flat here.
13:22I've got two trees where I can set up my tent, and I've got a lot of deadwoods around to build a fire.
13:31This is a great place, actually.
13:33This is a great place, and I've got a great place, and I've got a great shelter, so next step, that'll be the bed.
13:53I'll need some poles to put on the top, so I'll be able, you know, just to lie down on the bed.
14:14You know, it's cold.
14:14This is freaking cold here.
14:16I don't want to sleep on the ground.
14:18There we go.
14:22That's one.
14:23That's one.
14:23Put a bigger one on the top.
14:45There we go.
14:46I'm building a big fire that long because I just want a wall of heat coming out the fire towards me.
14:56So this is why it's a big one.
15:02Oh, this is great.
15:06Feels like home.
15:09Oh, man.
15:11Woof.
15:12And it's getting warm now.
15:13Well, I didn't catch anything.
15:17I haven't seen even anything.
15:20But, you know, I've got a shelter.
15:22I've got a good fire.
15:23And I've got jerky.
15:26So this is what I'm going to have, I guess, tonight, which is good.
15:31I'm just going to rest, and tomorrow it's a new day.
15:33The ocean really is the wildest place there is.
15:51The Titanic sank just out of the coast of Newfoundland.
15:53This was the nearest patch of water.
15:55Icebergs, ice, you know, big seas.
15:58But as rugged as it is, it is absolutely beautiful.
16:10This is definitely a dream come true for me, getting to live on a little remote island like this, ocean access only.
16:18I bought an old house on an island here on the coast of Newfoundland.
16:20And with a whole lot of elbow grease, it can be a real home.
16:36God, look at this.
16:37God, she's rotten.
16:40This was what it's like to be a homeowner and a budget right here, boy, I tell you.
16:43The biggest issue with the house is the front is just hanging off.
16:50And I'm racing to get it ready for the winter.
16:52Around here, winter comes hard and fast.
16:56These are actually old wood windows, and this is what I want to save.
16:59I want to keep the cost down, but really, because I want everything here to be authentic.
17:04This is antique.
17:06Ah, yeah.
17:07It's a very traditional-style home built back in the day by old fishermen, and I want to try and bring it back to its original glory.
17:19Once this window comes out, really commit us.
17:21The wind is definitely picking up.
17:24When the wind's up like this, it's not a great time to pull your house apart, that's for sure.
17:32All right, cross your fingers, boys and girls.
17:35Don't want to pop this glass.
17:38Oh, here she comes.
17:50Hey, old girl.
17:52Oh, hey.
17:53Going to be breezy around the kitchen table tonight.
17:58I'm looking out, the wind is howling, and the sun's going down.
18:01There's a gale on the way, and I got to get this thing tarped in ASAP,
18:05because me and Ronnie still got to sleep in here tonight.
18:07Stay in there, Ron.
18:09I want to get this up before night.
18:10If the wind is as high as they're calling it for,
18:13the wind comes in up the ocean,
18:16it's holding a hole, grabs a hole, too, like a big sail, who knows what it'll do.
18:19It'll be one hell of a cold night, for sure, but also it could do some damage.
18:26I don't know if this plastic's going to hold it.
18:30I'd say 50-50.
18:31The odds of this thing making it through tonight.
18:41Just felt a big raindrop.
18:42Goods it gets for a plastic window.
18:53Now we just pray.
18:55It's going to be a light sleep.
18:56I hope I can see it now.
19:08Hey, stay!
19:10Stop!
19:14Hey, stop!
19:19Whoa, da!
19:20Pretty intense.
19:27These dogs are pretty powerful.
19:29Once they hooked up to the sled, all they want to do is run.
19:32And I got dragged by the sled because the dogs were faster than me,
19:35and I couldn't hold on to my leaders.
19:37There's a saying,
19:39a musher who loses a sled is a dead musher,
19:41so the first rule is to always hold on to your sled.
19:45It was a bit chaotic,
19:47but we all made it across the river,
19:49so we can keep going on our little journey now.
19:53Okay, guys.
19:54Okay.
20:06This trapline conservation is vast.
20:10There's so many places to explore.
20:12It's like a huge playground.
20:13Oh, la.
20:20Oh, la.
20:23These dogs have never been trapping.
20:26They're just used to run, run, run for long distances.
20:30Stay.
20:32But for trapping,
20:33you have to stop periodically,
20:35and they have to stop exactly where I need them to stop.
20:38I can't have them going too close to the trap.
20:41Timber, line up.
20:42Line up, Timber.
20:44It's going to be a big learning curve for them.
20:48I'm teaching them to wait for me until I'm done,
20:50and to not come to me when I'm setting a trap,
20:53just for safety.
20:54Hey, guys!
20:55I want the dogs to be calm.
20:58I can't have them barking when I'm setting a trap because it's too intense and I can't even think.
21:03They have to understand that it's their job to relax, lay down, and chill out.
21:08I have some martin magic.
21:11It's a super good little mixture.
21:15I put it on every tree where I set up a trap.
21:17I put it on every tree where I set up a trap.
21:17It's pretty stinky, and martins love it.
21:20That's why we call it martin magic.
21:21The trap is set now.
21:26I just got to put my little cone over it to protect it from the birds.
21:30Since I started mushing eight years ago,
21:37it's been a dream to be able to trap with my sled dogs.
21:42Good job, huck.
21:44Then dive even deeper in that northern lifestyle.
21:59I've never been past this lake before,
22:02so it's kind of the boundary of this new big kingdom.
22:07I'm about to leave my neighborhood and venture into the unknown.
22:12It looks pretty good.
22:17If the first hundred meters look all right,
22:19then the rest of the lake should be fine.
22:22There are some creeks feeding into the lake,
22:24so I have to be careful and avoid those
22:27because that's usually when there is open water.
22:29So if I aim straight for the middle of the lake to the end,
22:33it should be all right.
22:35Come on, guys. You ready? Come on.
22:37My goal is to let my camp at the end of the lake
22:39so I'm ready to go tomorrow morning to start breaking trail
22:42and making my way towards these mountains.
22:45You guys ready? Okay.
22:46Your mind can comprehend how vast this place is
22:54for thousands of square kilometers,
22:58just pure wildness.
23:01Where I'm going, nobody has been, maybe ever.
23:04It's a crazy feeling to know that I might be the first one
23:09to set foot out here.
23:11It's pretty exciting.
23:12Today, the plan is to continue where we left off yesterday.
23:31Gilbert's going to attempt to go on the beaver hut
23:34and put in a trap.
23:35Yesterday was a really good reminder
23:40that you've got to think about the conditions
23:42and it's going to get you when you least expect it.
23:46I'm wet. I'm wet.
23:47I've experienced and seen the dangers that can happen.
23:50So now I'll be that much more prepared
23:52and I'm going to make a fire.
23:54So if Gilbert falls through the ice,
23:56he can come warm up.
23:57It's not ideal, but we also need beaver right now.
24:02All right. There you go.
24:03Let's see. Are you sick today, Gilbert?
24:08It's thicker from yesterday.
24:11Can you just be careful?
24:15How's the bridge?
24:17Good. It's solid.
24:18It's holding?
24:18Very good.
24:19You're not falling?
24:20I'm happy so far it seems to be holding up,
24:23but it is dangerous.
24:26It's making me nervous, but I trust him too.
24:29He knows what he's doing.
24:31I just don't like it.
24:32I won't feel relieved until we're out of here.
24:36This is a massive beaver hut biggest I've seen.
24:42And there's two vents.
24:43One right there and one over here.
24:46This is a telltale sign of live beavers down there.
24:50A lot of heat coming out from their breath.
24:52Yeah, there's a whole bunch down there.
24:54You can tell.
24:54If we cover all the exits,
25:00eventually there's going to be a beaver.
25:01Goes up for food.
25:07This is good.
25:11Hunting and trapping,
25:12that's part of who I am.
25:13I'm going to find the hole with this.
25:18You just find bushes that are curved like a U.
25:21Usually willows.
25:22But this is a spruce.
25:25Let's see if it keeps going.
25:26Yeah, it keeps going this way.
25:28Oh, yeah, right there.
25:32There's a hole there.
25:34Yeah, this is it.
25:36So I'm going to have to put a trap right there.
25:40I'm going to arm the trap,
25:41so they've got to be careful.
25:43It's dangerous.
25:44It's really powerful.
25:46There you go.
25:47It's set.
25:47These other poles are for the fence,
25:52so they don't go around.
25:53You're going to see that it's blocked here,
25:55and it's blocked on this side.
25:57So they have no choice just to go straight.
25:59And the trap does its magic.
26:02There you go.
26:03Yeah.
26:04All right, now I'll find another hole.
26:09We set the traps now,
26:11and we have to wait a couple days.
26:14All right, let's go.
26:15Ready to go?
26:15Yep.
26:15Hopefully, these two are enough to get one.
26:18Yeah, and I'll be happy with that.
26:41Overnight, it was snowing all night.
26:43With this trap, that was okay,
26:46but still pretty wetter.
26:50But I'm here now,
26:51so let's enjoy it as much as I can, you know?
26:59In the bush, hunting is a reality.
27:03If you can't harvest food for yourself,
27:06you won't last long.
27:07But it also connects you to the land,
27:10connects you to the animals.
27:13It's a very good way to be part of nature.
27:15I'm looking for some animal tracks, small game,
27:24but so far, I'm kind of disappointed.
27:31Oh, yeah.
27:32Little waterfall.
27:33That's nice.
27:34You know, it just amazed me
27:36how beautiful, you know,
27:38my place is.
27:39So peaceful.
27:41I'm very glad I'm back here.
27:45I feel so little sometimes
27:46in this vast world.
27:48The power of nature is so impressive.
27:51Nature reminds me she's the boss,
27:54and I'm just a guest here.
27:55A rabbit.
28:17Yeah.
28:17Yeah, I see him.
28:25All right.
28:30I got it.
28:33There we go.
28:35There we go, my dear friend.
28:36There we go.
28:38Hey.
28:39There we go.
28:41Beautiful animal.
28:44I will be able to have a good meal
28:45with this rabbit, so...
28:49Yeah, thank you, little rabbit.
28:51You know, killing an animal
28:53can be very exciting,
28:54but at the same time
28:54can be very profound
28:55because, you know,
28:58this animal just gave me his life.
29:01It's a deep feeling.
29:17I'm so in love with the idea
29:18of living here and being here.
29:20It's a lot more than just
29:22fixing up an old house.
29:23It's trying to preserve
29:24a piece of old history
29:25and a way of life.
29:28You know, the Newfoundland tradition
29:29is dying fast.
29:31Every year,
29:31another salt box like this
29:33falls into the ground.
29:34Stories and the history
29:35has slowly been eaten back up
29:37by the weather and the storms.
29:38by the weather and the storms.
29:44Look at this plastic.
29:45It survived the night.
29:47I'm absolutely amazed.
29:48It was howling last night.
29:50Looks like a windowpane blew out.
29:52Smashed.
29:57She's in a rough state.
29:58Real damage to the houses
30:00on the front.
30:00That's facing the ocean
30:02where all the weather
30:02and wind comes and hits.
30:04It's just hanging off.
30:06Just one good gust
30:07and the right spot
30:09at the right time
30:10could tear the whole front
30:10of this house right off.
30:13Luckily,
30:13wind's coming in
30:14from the west, northwest.
30:16So it's coming in southerly.
30:17We probably couldn't
30:18take this out today.
30:19But even so,
30:20it's pretty sketchy.
30:21It's howling,
30:22but we're going to do it.
30:24It's a big moment.
30:25All we have to do now
30:26is just tear it off.
30:30Once we start tearing
30:31this thing off
30:32as full command,
30:33the front of the house
30:33will be wide open.
30:36How rotten this is.
30:39You damn near
30:40take this place out
30:40with one pair
30:42of good rubber boots.
30:47Oh, this is great.
30:52What little boy
30:52doesn't want to take
30:53a sledgehammer
30:54to an old house?
30:57Okay.
30:58It looks rough,
30:59but I tell you,
31:00it's going to be beautiful.
31:01It really will.
31:04This old girl
31:05is putting up
31:05a good fight today.
31:07I'm fighting right back.
31:11There's times
31:12to work smarter,
31:12not harder.
31:13And this is one of those.
31:17a minefield
31:20of tetanus here.
31:22100-year-old rusty nails.
31:26Oh, yeah.
31:28I'm liking this already.
31:35This is it!
31:36Oh, yeah.
31:49Looks like
31:49a doomsday movie
31:50up here.
31:52All we need now
31:53is a few zombies
31:53kicking around
31:54the door down there.
31:57All we got left to do now
31:58is get the sheeting
31:59on this old girl.
32:02You got to love
32:02being a homeowner.
32:03Crossing the lake
32:23was pretty smooth.
32:24The ice was good,
32:25so I didn't have
32:26really much trouble
32:27on the lake.
32:29Hola!
32:31Good boys!
32:31The dogs
32:33did awesome today.
32:34It was a big day,
32:36big adventure.
32:37I'm very proud of them.
32:39Now I'll set up my camp,
32:40we'll spend the night here,
32:41and we'll keep going tomorrow.
32:46Oh, that's so comfy, guys.
32:48That's so comfy.
32:50Happy dogs.
32:55I'm just putting
32:56a little bit of bark,
32:57so I protect my fire
32:59from the snow.
33:17For my dogs,
33:18I'm making a soup
33:19with meat and kibbles.
33:22It's to keep them hydrated,
33:24and they need a lot
33:25of protein
33:25and a lot of fat
33:26to run
33:28these long distances.
33:36I'm putting some
33:37spruce balls
33:38on the ground
33:39just from my bed.
33:42Keeps me a little bit
33:43insulated
33:44from the cool ground,
33:46and it's more comfy.
33:47And then I'll put
33:48my bedroll on top of it
33:50with my sleeping bag,
33:51and that's it.
33:52I'm sleeping right
33:57next to the dogs
33:58for wolves.
34:01If I sleep too far
34:03from the dogs,
34:04wolves come too close,
34:05and they come check it out
34:07because they smell
34:07that there's new
34:09canine around,
34:10and they want to
34:11protect their tertiary.
34:14But if I'm right
34:15next to the dogs
34:16with all my scent
34:17and the fire going,
34:18they don't bother
34:19too much.
34:22To me,
34:25the Yukon
34:26is everything.
34:27It just fulfills
34:28every dream
34:28I ever had,
34:29and it gives me
34:30everything I need.
34:33It's pretty insane
34:34to think that there's
34:35still a place
34:36like this on Earth.
34:38I'm very excited
34:39to start my journey
34:40and go explore further.
34:41The beaver traps
34:58have been sitting
34:59for around three days,
35:00and today we're going
35:01to go check to see
35:02if we've caught anything.
35:09All right.
35:10It's been really cold
35:15these past couple days,
35:16so the ice is pretty thick.
35:18Yep.
35:18It's good.
35:20So you want me to try
35:21breaking the ice over here?
35:22Yep.
35:23Oh, this is really solid.
35:25Yep.
35:26Look how thick
35:27that ice is
35:28just from three days,
35:30like an extra three inches.
35:32All right.
35:33Let's see what we got.
35:36What I learned
35:37over the years
35:37is to not have expectations
35:39when it comes to hunting,
35:41and there is never
35:42any guarantee
35:43that we'll get anything.
35:45You're not going
35:45to be successful
35:46every time.
35:47I don't think
35:47there's anything.
35:49No, it feels really light.
35:51Oh, what?
35:53Look at that.
35:53We got one.
35:54Oh, yeah.
35:55Look at that.
35:56It looks small,
35:57but it's heavy.
35:58About 20 pounds.
36:00You can feed our family
36:01for sure.
36:03Nicky, why are you shaking?
36:04What's going on?
36:05Nicky wants to eat the beaver.
36:06He's excited.
36:09We'll check the other one.
36:10Okay.
36:11I always get sad,
36:12you know,
36:13getting a beaver
36:14or any animal,
36:15but I've been here
36:16long enough
36:17that I understand
36:18that we need to
36:19harvest to feed our family,
36:21so for sure,
36:23part of me is sad,
36:23but it's also
36:24a way of life here.
36:25You need to hunt
36:26and harvest to survive.
36:28Can it take a little peek?
36:31Oh, another one.
36:33He got another one.
36:35Oh, wow.
36:36Nicky,
36:37are you going to
36:37start shaking again?
36:39Are you excited?
36:40Wow.
36:41Oh, yeah,
36:41you are shaking.
36:45Then I'm going to
36:45put them in the snow,
36:46take the dirt off
36:47because it was muddy
36:48in there.
36:50This cleans it
36:51and dries it off.
36:53Yeah,
36:54to save the pelt.
36:55Yeah,
36:55it's beautiful.
36:56I'm going to make
36:57a hat maybe.
36:59Oh, wow,
37:00that's heavy.
37:01Yeah.
37:01We're going home today
37:04with two beavers.
37:05There's a lot more
37:06in this beaver hut.
37:07This is a very large
37:08beaver hut,
37:09but we're only taking
37:10what we need.
37:11We're respecting the land.
37:12We're not over-harvesting.
37:15It's a balance.
37:16You don't want to wipe out
37:17the whole colony.
37:19You need to save some
37:21so there'll be more next year.
37:23That's how it's done.
37:24That's how we do it.
37:24It was sweet
37:44using the trike
37:44to tear all this off.
37:50Plus,
37:50we've got to stop
37:51shagging around here.
37:51It's getting dark quick.
37:52The real race is on now
37:55to get this thing
37:56closed back in
37:56because the wind
37:57is still up
37:58and now the entire
37:59front of the house
38:00is off.
38:01She's a ticking time bomb.
38:04This house is one big
38:04sail up on top
38:05of the hill.
38:06Any gust of good wind,
38:08she could just
38:08destroy herself overnight.
38:13Traditional Newfoundland
38:14building,
38:14that's what I call this.
38:16You see anything
38:16that's shagged up,
38:17you just call it
38:18traditional
38:19Newfoundland building.
38:21She curves
38:21like the ocean.
38:22This plywood's
38:27going to give
38:28a lot of strength
38:28to the structure too.
38:30It won't be able
38:30to shift around so much.
38:33Yep,
38:33looks good.
38:35It's a great
38:35little home.
38:46Yep,
38:46definitely got that
38:47sheating on
38:48just in the nick of time.
38:49Almost out of light.
38:50I want to get this
38:52window in before dark.
38:57Sweet,
38:58merciful.
39:00That's it.
39:01Pop the window in now
39:02and make this house
39:04a home.
39:04life here is hard and tough
39:16just like the land
39:17and ocean around it.
39:18If you can make it here,
39:19you can probably
39:20make it anywhere.
39:22This was a big one
39:23to bite off
39:24in such a small amount
39:25of time.
39:26Beating the weather,
39:26beating the daylight.
39:29I mean,
39:29it's in.
39:30It's not going anywhere.
39:31Some more work
39:33to do in this place
39:34all the way outside
39:35to clapboard,
39:36to paint and all that stuff.
39:37But I mean,
39:38it's close enough.
39:38It's close enough
39:39to sleep in here
39:40and you stay warm and dry.
39:41That's all that really matters.
39:42This is a welcome
40:02fresh meal.
40:03You know,
40:04I'm kind of hungry right now
40:05because I've been eating
40:06an apple,
40:08some jerky.
40:09There we go.
40:14Parfait.
40:15So now,
40:15let's roast
40:16this little guy.
40:20All right.
40:21Got nice little sticks
40:22and that will be
40:23the tripod
40:24for the cooking.
40:26So I'm looking
40:27for some natural V
40:28like this one
40:29and the main stick
40:31will be lying
40:33on the top.
40:34You know,
40:35this is a kind of
40:35old school rotisserie.
40:39bushcraft is
40:41traditional knowledge.
40:42It's a survival skill
40:44and without it,
40:45you can't make a life
40:46out here.
40:48There we go.
40:50This one has
40:52three wrenches
40:53and this is a stopper.
40:54Turn it,
40:56stick it there.
40:57Boop!
40:57Wait a bit,
40:58after an hour
40:59and whoop!
41:00on the other side
41:01like this.
41:02It's all about
41:03cooking evenly.
41:05So,
41:05this is so important.
41:07Otherwise,
41:08just a stray stick,
41:09you will have to
41:10stay here all day.
41:11Rather to use
41:12traditional
41:13trick like this.
41:17And the last step,
41:19every trip,
41:20I always
41:21bring salt.
41:25There we go.
41:26And the other thing
41:28I'm doing also,
41:29I'm just going to put
41:30some small piece
41:31of butter
41:32on the top
41:33so it will melt
41:33slowly
41:34and make sure
41:36the meat
41:36is tender.
41:39Oh well,
41:40now I have to be patient.
41:41That will take
41:42at least three hours.
41:43Can't wait though.
41:44I'm hungry now.
41:45My father gave me
41:53this great gift
41:54and I enjoyed
41:56being here.
41:57The best gift
41:58I can give to my dad
41:59is just to enjoy
42:00this place.
42:01It's a good way
42:02to honor him.
42:03He would be proud,
42:04I'm sure.
42:09Mmm,
42:09looks good.
42:10Ha, ha, ha, ha.
42:12Oh yeah,
42:13this is cooked.
42:14Wow,
42:16small piece.
42:18Mmm,
42:19oh yeah,
42:19this is,
42:19oh,
42:20ho, ho, ho, ho,
42:20the salt, man.
42:23Butter,
42:23salt,
42:24that makes
42:25the whole difference.
42:27Mmm,
42:28oh,
42:29so tasty.
42:30Oh man,
42:31this is good.
42:32Beautiful.
42:34Mmm.
42:41You know,
42:42it's been actually
42:43a very good trip.
42:45It's not everyone
42:46who get a chance
42:47to live this kind
42:48of adventure,
42:49so I feel very fortunate.
42:51Being on my land,
42:53hunting,
42:55and having a good meal
42:56is the best.
42:58joyous.
43:12It's just a thing.
43:17It's a very good meal.
43:18It's a very good meal.
43:20I feel very good.
