00:00Sydney Sweeney reacts to American Eagle backlash after racist claims.
00:06Sydney Sweeney has been making headlines this year, from her split with fiancé Jonathan Devino
00:12to her dramatic transformation into boxer Christy Martin for the upcoming film Christy.
00:19She also sparked major backlash after starring in an American Eagle ad that was slammed as racist and Nazi propaganda online.
00:28The Euphoria star stayed silent at the time, but she's finally addressing the controversy.
00:34In her new GQ cover interview, the 28-year-old Anyone But You actress touched on a variety of topics,
00:41including, of course, the uproar over the American Eagle campaign.
00:46I did a jean ad, the blonde beauty bluntly said.
00:50She went on, I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but it was.
00:55I love jeans.
00:56All I wear are jeans.
00:59I'm literally in jeans and a t-shirt, like every day of my life.
01:03Although the campaign sparked major backlash on social media, it did win one very unexpected fan,
01:11President Donald Trump.
01:13Shortly after it was reported that Sweeney is a registered Republican,
01:17Trump took to his Truth Social platform to praise her and the ad.
01:21When GQ asked if she felt thankful to have such a powerful figure support her,
01:34Sidney kept her response vague, saying she hadn't really viewed it that way.
01:38She added that she barely saw the online discourse at all because of her packed schedule.
01:44I'm working 16-hour days and don't bring my phone on set, she said, noting she was filming
01:51the final season of Euphoria.
01:53So, I work and then I go home and I go to sleep.
01:57So, I didn't really see a lot of it.
02:00The backlash began after American Eagle's ad with the tagline,
02:03Sidney Sweeney has great genes, a genes vs. genes pun that critics said echoed racist,
02:11fascist imagery and resembled Nazi propaganda.
02:14A viral TikTok called it Nazi propaganda weird, while others labeled it pure Nazi and tone-deaf,
02:23with many on X agreeing it felt racist.
