00:00So, here's the latest move from the Phoenix Suns front office. According to a report from ESPN's
00:06Shams Karania, the team has agreed to sign guard Jamari Bouyea to a two-way contract. Now, to make
00:12this happen, they had to make another move, because of roster rules. An NBA team can only have three
00:18two-way players at a time, and the Suns were already at that maximum. As first reported by
00:23John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, the team solved this by waiving their two-way center,
00:28CJ Huntley. There is a note here that the franchise could potentially re-sign him to their G League
00:34team, the Valley Suns, if he isn't claimed by another team off waivers. Let me give you some
00:38background on their new player, Jamari Bouyea. He's 26 years old, and has been something of a
00:44journeyman since he entered the league back in 2022 as an undrafted player from the University
00:49of San Francisco. In his time in the NBA, he's played a total of 19 games, splitting time with
00:56several teams. The Heat, the Wizards, the Trail Blazers, the Spurs, and the Bucks. This season,
01:03while playing for the Austin Spurs in the G League, the 6'2 guard has been putting up strong numbers.
01:09He's averaged 20 points, 4.5 assists, and two steals over four games. It also looks like he's
01:16been working on his three-point shot. This year, in that small four-game sample size,
01:21he's shooting 35% from deep. That's a notable jump because, before this, he had never shot above
01:2730.6% from three-point range in the G League. From a skills perspective, what does he bring?
01:35He gives the Suns a ball handler, who can create his own shot. He's good at getting to his preferred
01:39spots for step-back jumpers, or driving aggressively to the basket to finish at the rim. You might remember,
01:45he first burst onto the national scene during the NCAA tournament back in 2022. Now, the big question
01:52is, why are the Suns making this move, now? Is it just to add talent to their G League roster,
01:58or is there more to it? Well, looking at their guard situation, it seems to be a needed depth move.
02:04The Suns began the year with their two-way slots, filled by second-round pick Kobe Brea,
02:09forward Isaiah Livers, and the rookie C.J. Huntley. They did have an open spot on their main 15
02:15roster to promote one of them, but instead, they waived Huntley, with the hope of developing him
02:21in the G League. Signing Buyea becomes more urgent, when you consider the current injuries.
02:26The Suns are dealing with guards Jalen Green and Grayson Allen both being out,
02:30to make matters worse. In their last game on Sunday against the Atlanta Hawks,
02:34their backup guard Colin Gillespie had to sit out the end of the game due to leg cramps,
02:39breaking down those injuries. Jalen Green is set to be re-evaluated in three to five weeks,
02:44which means he'll be out until at least mid-December. As for Grayson Allen, he's currently
02:48listed as day-to-day, with a quad contusion that he suffered last Thursday against the
02:52Indiana Pacers. So, in summary, this appears to be a proactive signing by the Suns,
02:57to add a proven G League creator to their system, while they navigate these backcourt injuries.
