DiversiónTranscripción
00:00Previously, the knitters tackled their second solo challenge to make iconic outfits for pets.
00:09I'm winging it. David Bowie's wig.
00:12Before going back in time to create dramatic 80s jumpers in the team knit.
00:17I'm throwing my needle fast enough. Oh, good grief.
00:20We did it.
00:22Holger was best in show.
00:24For me, Holger nailed it.
00:26Earning him the big knitter of the week badge.
00:30Stephanie found herself in the danger zone.
00:33It's just a bit messier than the rest.
00:35But ultimately, Meadow was cast off.
00:38I've loved every minute of it.
00:41Leaving eight knitters remaining.
00:45Now.
00:47It's week three and for our eight remaining knitters, they're going to try and get away from it all because it's holiday week.
00:53I hope they're ready, because I am.
00:57Welcome to Game of War.
01:00Welcome back, knitters.
01:08I mean, I feel like there's relaxation in the air, which is good because it's holiday week.
01:13First up is your solo knit.
01:15So for this week, for your individual challenge, we would like you to make some amazing swimwear.
01:23So we'd like a striking and glamorous design.
01:29You can knit or crochet or a bit of both.
01:34And these are going to be close-fitting garments.
01:37So fit and fastenings are going to be not just important, they're going to be critical.
01:43So good luck.
01:44Indeed, I think fit is definitely the word that stands out there because I have some of my Team GB diving friends who are going to be coming along to try on your swimwear.
01:58Wow.
01:59Yes.
02:00So I don't want to see any more of them than is completely necessary.
02:03You have 12 hours to complete this challenge, so let's dive in there like swimwear.
02:10Let's get knitting.
02:10This week's solo challenge is about making a splash with small, perfectly fitting design.
02:21So are you making like shorts?
02:23Yeah, short shorts.
02:25Working to the exact measurements of Team GB, the knitters must design swimsuits with Olympic precision fit alongside gold medal style glam.
02:35I'm hoping that the frills will sort of add a little bit of modesty.
02:39The knitters may choose to create their swimwear using knit or crochet.
02:47They can design a one-piece, bikini or trunks tailor-made to fit their model.
02:52Crocheters will work in panels, manipulating basic granny squares and or varying stitch size to create shapes that contour the body.
03:00Knitters will work in the round, decreasing and increasing the number of stitches to create a form-fitting shape.
03:06Once the base garment is complete, knitters can bring the glam with embellishments such as tassels, fringing or motifs.
03:13Finally, any knitters creating trunks must create an accompanying accessory such as a bag, a belt or even a vest.
03:20So, swimwear, this is a tough knit.
03:26Absolutely.
03:27There's so many directions that they can go with this design.
03:32What are you hoping for in terms of design concept?
03:35It's got to be innovative.
03:37It's got to be fun, light.
03:39Di's all about glam this week, aren't you?
03:41I'm all about glam.
03:42Yes.
03:43We want them to get the shaping right and fit is going to be huge.
03:48It's getting to that point in the competition now where we are really nitpicking, right?
03:52Really putting them to the test.
03:59Inspired by their favourite holiday destinations, this challenge is all about posing poolside in style.
04:06Do you hate it when you lose the top of your treble?
04:09Yeah.
04:09Dipti is kicking off the challenge with crochet and working up the body of her bikini using the granny square.
04:18A classic crochet motif which creates a lacy appearance and currently enjoying a retro comeback.
04:25It is simple, but you don't have to make squares.
04:28So, I'm going to make triangles and I'm going to make the iconic triangle halter neck bikini with it.
04:33Dipti's bikini incorporates granny triangles, crocheted using black and gold metallic yarn for a glam colour scheme inspired by a trip to Las Vegas with her choir.
04:45I'm a member of a choir called the Las City Chorus.
04:51We're a competitive chorus.
04:52It's always about striving to be better.
04:55And I'm taking that practice into this competition as well.
05:01Were you just talking about Vegas?
05:02Yeah.
05:02Where we sung is where they hold boxing matches.
05:05Oh, right.
05:06Yeah.
05:06It's m-hoosive.
05:08So, does that mean you're now officially a Vegas showgirl?
05:10No, no, no.
05:17Also taking a granny square to the next level is Holger.
05:21But rather than a triangle, Holger is using the granny stitch as a building block to create his trunks with the usual precision we've come to expect of him.
05:30The shape I'm creating here, there has been a hell of a lot of work which involves some complicated calculating.
05:36Inspired by Dea, a coastal village in Mallorca, Holger is shaping granny squares around the legs to create tight-fitting trunks.
05:46His shorts will be paired with a loose-fitting mesh top to bring the glam to the granny square.
05:52It's more of a posing trunk, isn't it?
05:53Let's face it.
05:54Nobody wants to go into the water with that.
05:58Lydia.
05:59Hi, Tom.
06:00How's it going?
06:01It is going.
06:02Women's bodies, there's just so, so much to it to get it to fit properly.
06:09Inspired by an Australian holiday, Lydia is attempting to knit an entire swimsuit.
06:15Her complex pattern requires shaping around the top and bottom and an intricate lace panel inserted through the centre to cinch the garment in and reflect the curves of the female body.
06:26Struth!
06:27Are you planning to make it like a tube all the way up or are you kind of going to go a bit skimpier to save on time?
06:33There's loads of shaping here, so this bit was always the narrowest bit anyway, so the top part you've got shaping where it increases, but the sand bit is the skimpiest bit because I want it to look dramatic.
06:46Well, it's not like you're designing very basic stuff.
06:49This has got like so many stitches, you've got all kinds of different textures going on there.
06:53This competition is the first time I've been designing things and I just thought, wow, it's really gone from zero to 100.
06:59Well, that's right. I mean, it looks like it's coming together really nicely.
07:01Thank you so much, Tom.
07:02Can't wait to see it finish.
07:02Thank you.
07:03While the knitters work their way through the bodies of their cozies, the judges will be expecting a close fit through clever shaping or via fastenings to the body.
07:18Can't believe I'm sat here agonising over the length of an Olympian's crotch.
07:23Ailsa.
07:29Hello.
07:30What have we got going on here?
07:32The inspiration behind this was a trip to Venice with my friend Kate.
07:36What are these going to be?
07:38That is going to form the top in the sort of harlequin design.
07:41Wow.
07:42So I'll alternate the colours and lay them out.
07:45Ailsa is also making a full swimsuit like Lydia, but instead of knitting, she plans to crochet 21 diamonds, which will then be stitched together to create a swimsuit fitted to the body.
07:58It was quite a challenge to get it to curve around the chest properly.
08:02So I've got these two triangles, which will join here to create a bit of a curve.
08:08OK.
08:09Who is your competition this week, do you think?
08:12Well, just seeing what Lydia's up to.
08:14It's at the speed of light.
08:16With our lace, it's looking good.
08:20Also taking inspiration from a recent trip, but a more magical themed one, is Simon.
08:26And despite last week's failed crochet attempt, this week he's at it again.
08:31It's a pair of shorts.
08:32It's inspired by Disneyland Paris and the colours of the castle.
08:36We just love going there.
08:37Here's a...
08:38Yeah.
08:41Rookie crocheter Simon is boldly using freeform crochet to create his golden board shorts,
08:47with insect granny circles on the back to reflect those iconic mouse ears.
08:52Inspired by his time in the Marines and current career as a builder,
08:56he's planning to accessorise his swimwear with a utility belt.
09:01For all those holiday essentials, also decorated with granny circles.
09:07I'm going to kind of try and just stitch them together, like just make it up as I go along.
09:13I don't crochet, but I feel that you can adjust it more quickly.
09:22Stephanie, it seems like you've been on a lot of really cool holidays.
09:26Yes.
09:26I've been very, very fortunate.
09:29I got married in the Seychelles.
09:30That's crazy.
09:31Unfortunately, the marriage didn't last, but c'est la vie.
09:35The memories are brilliant.
09:37Stephanie is bravely ditching her knitting needles to give crochet a go with her tropical island bikini.
09:44She plans to embellish with surface crochet to add a beachy design complete with a sun, sea and even a palm tree.
09:51I see you're crocheting.
09:54Yes.
09:54I'm not a crochet person.
09:56That's not my thing.
09:57But I decided to take a gamble.
10:00And I've got two bust cups almost completed.
10:04Lovely.
10:05What I have learnt is that I can use a paper pattern.
10:10And so this is my lower garment that will fold up into...
10:16OK.
10:16So that's my template for when I come to do this part.
10:20Seems like quite a big risk to take on crochet.
10:23Well, I decided that it was time for me to show some diversity.
10:27I'm going for it.
10:32By this stage in the challenge, the judges will be looking for knitters to be working up a perfect fit.
10:37Hi, Tracy.
10:38Hiya.
10:39How are you doing, Tracy?
10:40So the design for this, I wanted it to have something that was quite blocked in the middle
10:44so that we don't have any nipple exposure.
10:47You've made a longer stitch.
10:49And then for this section, you've just nicely shortened it.
10:53Yes.
10:53Create shape, isn't it?
10:54Yeah, to create shape.
10:56Channeling memories of Isle of Wight holidays, Tracy is adjusting her stitch size to sculpt
11:02the cup shape for her white and gold crochet bikini.
11:06She's planning an opulent display of pink and purple fuchsias to complete the look.
11:11What are you going to do next?
11:12My idea was to do fuchsias and the flowers are going to hang.
11:16Hopefully the booby bit won't.
11:20Fuchsias are really glamorous.
11:22Lots of petals and you need to make good choices about how you're going to do that.
11:27Yeah.
11:28I would say.
11:29Fingers crossed I'll make the best ones then.
11:30Oh my gosh.
11:36Yeah, it's fine.
11:37We don't need to talk about it.
11:38While Tracy is using crochet flowers to bring the glam, Isaac is planning to embellish his
11:44trunks with glamorous lettering.
11:46Isaac is knitting board shorts with a rock climbing design on the front and sparkly letters on the back inspired by a trip to the New River Gorge in West Virginia.
12:04His accessory is a crochet chalk bag to complete the rock climbing theme.
12:10So obviously because I'm doing just the swim shorts I have to have an additional item and the accessory I've chosen to make is a chalk bag which you would use for rock climbing.
12:20You could put your phone in it, you could put your keys in it.
12:22It's great for hanging by the pool.
12:24Dianchi though are going to love it.
12:26Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge.
12:34You have six hours remaining.
12:38Oh God.
12:39I'm definitely behind.
12:41At the halfway point, knitters should be well into the body of their garments and starting to add their glamorous details.
12:48The pants, they're not quite going according to plan.
12:51I think my shaping isn't quite right.
12:54I thought that was going to be the front, but I think it might have to be the back.
13:03I've got to say I'm worried about this challenge.
13:06I am worried.
13:14It's week three in the yarn barn and the knitters are over halfway through their solo challenge
13:20to create glamorous swimwear modelled by Team GB.
13:25Measurement wise, guys are exactly the same size as me.
13:28So obviously if the fit is bad, I don't have any excuse.
13:32Maybe we should cut that out.
13:35Hi Lydia.
13:36Hi.
13:37Lydia is halfway through her complicated lace panel, which she hopes will create the perfect fit for her swimsuit.
13:43Once you start introducing a lace section to swimwear, it becomes much sexier and more glamorous.
13:54Amazing.
13:55I'm really looking forward to seeing it and the shaping as it progresses.
13:58Fit is everything.
14:00Yeah, it is critical.
14:01Keep going.
14:01Keep going, keep going.
14:02You've achieved a huge amount there.
14:03Thank you.
14:05I just really wanted to make something that would make you and Sheila proud with how it fits.
14:10Sorry.
14:11I feel quite emotional.
14:12I feel.
14:13Sorry.
14:14I'm going to go red.
14:15Oh, I just...
14:16I bet nobody else gets like this over knitting.
14:21It just makes me feel incredibly emotional.
14:26So I'm crying, but I'm actually really happy.
14:30Cures of joy.
14:30It's got to pull it off.
14:32No pressure.
14:33No pressure.
14:44Simon has now completed his trunks and is using a unique method to ensure a successful fit.
14:51Lacing.
14:52Oh, the boss is in.
14:53How are you doing with this?
14:55So I'm just trying to pick up a waistband.
15:00And then I was going to either do like a lace-up side to make it a bit sexier.
15:05Oh, okay.
15:06They're pretty risque.
15:07So I hope your friend...
15:08Oh, we're athletes.
15:10We don't mind.
15:10We don't see our bodies as anything other than a vessel to perform, to be honest.
15:15So, you know.
15:16And you can see the really sparkly, glam look.
15:23I just hope it fits her.
15:24In the final hours of the challenge, knitters should be adding embellishments and creating
15:29any accessories.
15:30But novice crocheter Stephanie is yet to add any of her tropical details.
15:35The plan is to have a palm tree.
15:37Yes.
15:37I want it 3D.
15:38Nice surface 3D.
15:40Yes.
15:40Absolutely.
15:41So we will look forward to seeing what else you can add to your basic pieces.
15:47I'm interested to see what I'm going to add as well.
15:49You'd like to see it too, Stephanie.
15:51While Stephanie races to complete her embellishments, Tracy has managed to complete her fuchsias,
15:57but with less flower power than she had hoped.
16:00So, Tracy, how's it going?
16:02Panicked.
16:02Panicked?
16:03Yeah, very.
16:03What are you panicking about?
16:04This is the bottom.
16:06Okay, so you...
16:06And so we might be exposing your friend's bottom.
16:09Have you got the flower covered?
16:11Yeah, I've got a flower covered.
16:15Might end up being a one-shoulder affair at this, right?
16:18Knitters, you have one hour remaining.
16:25I mean, at this point, what am I doing?
16:28In the remaining hour, any knitters presenting trunks to the judges must now complete the coordinated accessory to match.
16:37Holger is crocheting a string vest.
16:40Very, very open mesh.
16:41So very little substance, but once the top is done, I can work from here downwards.
16:45It's kind of a little bit sexy having a bit of a crop, though.
16:48Yeah.
16:49Not for you?
16:50Well, not for me personally, definitely.
16:52Well, you know, you never know.
16:55With Isaac's shorts taking longer than he had anticipated, he is now rushing to crochet up a chalk bag.
17:02Now, I'm making a loose representation of a chalk bag.
17:05And Simon's accessory utility belt is also far less refined than he had intended.
17:11Holger, there's no glamour in this one.
17:14My utility belt?
17:16I mean, it goes amazing with my sheep, Birch.
17:2030 minutes to go.
17:21Let's check in on them, shall we?
17:22Stephanie, how's it going?
17:24The palm tree is proving more difficult than I thought.
17:26I'm trying to attach the leaves to make it look like a palm tree than the black stripe.
17:31Elsa, where are you at right now?
17:32Just putting the last of the diamonds together.
17:35In the final moments, knitters have one last chance to add any last-minute details.
17:41Tracy, how's it going?
17:42It feels very glam.
17:44Dipsy.
17:45You know?
17:46Don't take that.
17:48I'm taking it.
17:48Not much time to go.
17:50Yes.
17:50Go, go, go, go.
17:52No urgency here.
17:54It's coming.
17:54It's coming.
17:55It's coming.
17:55I've just lost my needle.
17:58That stretch of me gets a bit longer.
18:00That's all I can do.
18:01Yeah, haven't got time.
18:05Knitters, time is up.
18:06That's 12 hours done.
18:08It's now time for Team GB to try on your swimwear.
18:12Let's hope it fits.
18:16Knitters were asked to produce glamorous, form-fitting swimwear.
18:2012 hours later, it's time for eight beach-ready looks to be judged.
18:25It's been a massive risk.
18:26I've just got to trust the judges and take into account just how much I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
18:32I'm not a glamorous person.
18:34I don't do glamour.
18:35So to have that is completely out of my wheelhouse.
18:39Diving into our swimwear today are Team GB superstars with three Olympic medals between them.
18:45Noah Williams, Yasmin Harper and Jordan Holden.
18:51Well done, knitters.
18:53That's eight glamorous swimsuits made.
18:56And now it's time for my fellow Team GB Olympians to try them on and find out who will sink and who will swim.
19:03First up, we have Lydia.
19:05Lydia.
19:05Sporting Lydia's swimsuit is Olympic bronze medalist Yasmin Harper.
19:20I love this piece.
19:22I think the word might be chic.
19:24It has a glamour because you've brought the lace panel in.
19:29I think what makes it fit well, the shaping, which is a feat of engineering.
19:36I'm proud that I've got it out and it fits.
19:40Amen.
19:41You should be proud because the fit is lovely.
19:43Thank you, Lydia.
19:44Thank you, Lydia.
19:45Next up, we have Dipty.
19:46Wow, it's amazing.
19:53The glamour of Las Vegas really shines through.
19:57The stitch work is lovely.
19:58The shaping is very elegant.
20:01Is it comfortable to wear?
20:04Would you like to tell me?
20:06Would I wear it without pants on underneath?
20:08Probably not.
20:10No.
20:10Yes.
20:10But it's a little revealing, isn't it?
20:14It is.
20:15I mean, yeah.
20:17Yeah.
20:18Thank you.
20:18Thank you.
20:21Up next is Elsa.
20:28I really love the way it's all joined together.
20:32A couple of different shapes there to fit the body.
20:35I'm unsure about here.
20:38You've got your cut threads here.
20:40And you can see them.
20:41But there's a lot of really fine crochet work.
20:45Yes.
20:45Which is absolutely excellent.
20:48Thank you.
20:48Thank you very much, Elsa.
20:50Thank you.
20:51Next up, we have Isaac.
20:57Modelling Isaac's shorts is double Olympic medalist and my diving partner, Noah Williams.
21:03APPLAUSE
21:04Would you mind turning round so we can see the back?
21:12For us.
21:13For me, it's not quite glam enough.
21:16Yeah, that's fair.
21:16It's difficult with a subject, which is rock climbing.
21:22Yeah.
21:22To make it glam.
21:23To add a lot of glam into it.
21:25So, the bag, you were aiming for a different palette.
21:30Yeah.
21:31I did want it to be sort of like a bright accompaniment because I know that the colours to the shorts
21:37themselves are relatively dull.
21:38I think it just needed to be a little bit more wow.
21:41Thank you, Isaac.
21:42Thanks, Noah.
21:42Thank you.
21:47Next up is Stephanie.
21:48I can't help feeling that the bottom half is just a little on the skimpy side.
22:03OK.
22:04It's not quite as glamour as I would have imagined.
22:08Not all of the detailing works.
22:11Some of it is on the simple side.
22:14I'm not sure about the palm tree.
22:16OK.
22:17Even some palm fronds coming over.
22:20Yeah.
22:21Would it be more exotic?
22:22Yes.
22:23Yeah.
22:25Thank you.
22:26Thank you, Stephanie.
22:27Thank you.
22:27Thanks, Jasmine.
22:28APPLAUSE
22:29OK, Tracey, you're up next.
22:36Are we ready?
22:38Up we go.
22:38Up we through.
22:40There you go.
22:40Thank you.
22:41Hi, Tracey.
22:41Hiya.
22:44So, in terms of fit, the top works really well.
22:49Yeah, I'm not sure the flowers have worked.
22:51Fuchsias are really opulent with lots of petals and gorgeousness.
22:56Yeah.
22:57And then they don't quite make it for me as a fuchsia.
23:02Thank you, Jasmine.
23:06Next up is Holger.
23:14I would not have thought a string vest and a granny squares pair of trunks could be sexy and glamorous, but they are.
23:22You've manipulated them to create shape and form.
23:28It's really sculptural.
23:30It's a really good fit.
23:31Really well done.
23:33Thank you, Holden.
23:35And next up is Simon.
23:37The Olympian in Simon's shorts is Jordan Holden.
23:45APPLAUSE
23:46So, ah, the lacing is interesting.
24:03Do you really like it?
24:04I didn't say I liked it.
24:05Oh, right, OK.
24:07So, obviously, I wanted it to be a bit more, like, chic.
24:12It's ended up with some sort of bunched up bits.
24:17Yeah.
24:17The fit is compromised.
24:20Thank you.
24:22APPLAUSE
24:22My biggest takeaway from this challenge is I'm really not a crocheter.
24:33I'm just going to shut the door on this one, move on, let's not worry about it, and move on and do my best.
24:39With eight swimsuits now packed away for the holidays, the knitters have one more chance to prove themselves and avoid the cast-off.
24:55And for this team challenge, they'll want a seat.
24:57This week for our team challenge, Di and Sheila would love for you to work in pairs to crochet a deck chair.
25:10Wow.
25:11What?
25:12Yeah.
25:13A deck chair.
25:16Cornerstone of British seaside summer.
25:18And because this is our first Only Crochet Challenge, we have enlisted some help from an amazing crochet judge.
25:29Her designs have been worn by Justin Bieber, and she's an expert in high-end contemporary floral design.
25:37Please welcome Janie Crowe.
25:46Hi, guys.
25:47I really feel that Crochet has the potential to be an amazing platform for creativity, amazing colour palettes, and I just can't wait to see what you all come up with.
25:58Good luck.
26:00This week, we would like you, in your pairs, to crochet a traditional deck chair sling.
26:07We would love to see a striking holiday design.
26:13Practical, functional, and above all, securely fitted.
26:18Because while we won't be having a wee seat, our friend Tom here will.
26:25Yes.
26:26I don't want to fall through.
26:27As always, the team challenge is judged blind, so I am now going to ask Di, Sheila, and Janie to leave the yarn behind.
26:37Good luck.
26:37Now, for your teams, you're going to be working in pairs, so in team one, we have Holger and Isaac.
26:46In team two, we have Lydia and Tracy.
26:52Yeah.
26:53In team three, we have Stephanie and Dipty.
26:58And in team four, we have Elsa and Simon.
27:04For this challenge, you are going to have eight hours.
27:09Let's get hooking.
27:18Each of the teams have been given a simple deck chair frame to create a holiday-inspired design.
27:23It's always the internal question, how do those things fold and unfold?
27:26Once they have crocheted together their seaside sling, they must attach it to the frame successfully.
27:32Do you think squares are varying sizes and then putting them together?
27:36I think so.
27:37Teams have a choice of three cotton yarns for the sling, a thick cord yarn, a fine recycled yarn, and a soft tape yarn.
27:46Let's make sure we a-deck the competition.
27:49A-deck them all.
27:49A-deck chair.
27:53Well, Tom, can I just say deck chairs are iconic?
27:57Yeah, well, that's fair enough.
27:59Absolutely.
28:00I mean, are there stitches that work better for a deck chair?
28:03Probably the densest crochet stitch is a double.
28:06It's the sturdiest crochet stitch.
28:08But the one I'm concerned they might use is a treble.
28:12So it's the same process through the stitch, but this time I've got three loops on my hook instead of two.
28:18So then it's through two.
28:21Mm-hmm.
28:21Oh!
28:22And through the final two.
28:24And that then gives you this gap, you see?
28:27The risky gap.
28:29Yeah.
28:29Then it's going to be really stretchy.
28:31And stretchy can be a disaster when it comes to sitting down in a deck chair.
28:36Yeah.
28:36Yeah.
28:36Yeah.
28:36It needs to be firm.
28:38I feel like a granny square is very much a classic in the crochet world.
28:41Do you think that's a good idea to do within a deck chair?
28:44The granny square has its place, but I'm hoping that they push it a little bit out.
28:49I want something different.
28:53One of us starts from the top, one of us starts from the bottom.
28:56Teams must select a yarn and a stitch that are up for the job.
29:00Too stretchy and I could end up bottomed out.
29:03That's the technical diving term for hitting the floor.
29:05That's the yarn that we liked, the thicker one, which will grow quicker.
29:09Yeah, that will be all right on there, I think.
29:11Simon and Ailsa are first to select the thick cord yarn.
29:15First thing I can think of is the little beach huts.
29:20Yes.
29:20We could do a textured sort of stitch here for the sand.
29:25For their deck chair, Simon and Ailsa have come up with a classic beach hut design,
29:31using the dense shell and double crochet stitches for the base,
29:35with seaside motifs stitched on as extra details.
29:39Stephanie and Dipty have also opted for the thickest yarn.
29:43We could do a cocktail.
29:44OK, something like this, and we could have an umbrella in it.
29:49Yeah.
29:49How's that?
29:49Yeah.
29:51Stephanie and Dipty have concocted a Cocktails on the Beach design.
29:55They will connect cord yarn granny squares for the sling
29:58before adding their crochet cocktail motif.
30:02This is actually lovely.
30:04Is it?
30:04Yeah, I like it. I really like the feel of it.
30:07Tracy and Lydia have gone for the soft and stretchy tape yarn.
30:11What stitch is going to provide the best security for the base of it?
30:15I think we'd do something plain, so keep that fairly basic, and then flower the whole thing.
30:21It should transport you to the Hawaiian beach.
30:24It's going to be all about the embellishments.
30:26Their Hawaiian beach theme incorporates a stripy sling embellished with an abundance of tropical flowers.
30:33With the amount of effort that you're putting into working with this, we could make something faster with the...
30:39Slimmer one?
30:39Yeah.
30:40Yeah.
30:41Holger and Isaac are the only team to choose the fine cotton yarn.
30:45I mean, it could be something as simple as those cones that are bound from newspaper with the chips in.
30:50Yeah, I think what we could do is make the background the classic stripes.
30:55A cone of chips is on the menu for the boys.
30:58They will be using Intarsia to crochet their chip design into their sling while using the thinnest yarn.
31:05This means a total of 6,000 stitches will be needed to complete this intricate design.
31:11We're planning on splitting the whole thing essentially down the middle.
31:15It's easier to split it this way because then the join in the motif will have to be done carefully,
31:20but the join in the stripe will be hidden.
31:23We're going to have an uphill struggle to beat the crochet queens over there,
31:26but as long as you don't come last.
31:33Two hours into the challenge and the base of the deck chair slings are taking shape.
31:38It's really like fighting, isn't it?
31:40It is.
31:40Working with this yarn.
31:41Yeah.
31:43Dipsy, Stephanie.
31:44How are we doing?
31:46How mean? Do you fancy a cocktail?
31:47I would love a cocktail. What have you got on offer?
31:49Granny's on the beach.
31:51Granny's on the beach.
31:52That's a good one.
31:54How's it going?
31:55So this is going to be the sling of our cover.
31:58It is growing very quickly to see it come together,
32:01and especially with the granny square, they just grow in all directions.
32:03Yeah.
32:03But every round it gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
32:06I feel reasonably confident.
32:08Do you think so?
32:09I think we've got a plan and we know what we're doing.
32:12It's looking good.
32:13Quick.
32:14Ailsa and Simon are the only team doubling the length of the sling to fold it over.
32:20All other teams plan to just attach one panel to the frame.
32:23Ailsa and Simon.
32:25Hello.
32:26We've got the main sling finished.
32:29But we're just going to adjust that slightly because what we're going to do is we're going
32:32to extend it all the way around and turn it into a tube.
32:35So when it sits on a deck chair, you've got two layers of fabric, and that will really
32:39feel supportive.
32:44Hookers!
32:44You're halfway through this challenge.
32:48That is four hours until you need your deck chair ready.
32:51I'm off on holiday.
32:52I'm off on holiday.
32:53Oh!
32:54Oh!
32:55Oh, no!
32:56I'm off on holiday.
32:57In the remaining four hours, knitters must join together their slings with enough strength
33:02to pass the sit test.
33:04That's holding.
33:05And also add any final embellishments.
33:08I'm doing a cocktail glass and then the umbrella that goes in the top of it.
33:13I'm doing some free-form crochet flowers.
33:16I've started to add a bit of detail to these.
33:18That's just a wee anchor.
33:20But having chosen the finest yarn...
33:23It's taking so long.
33:25Holger and Isaac are beginning to fall behind.
33:28You're planning on doing the whole deck chair in this thin yarn?
33:31Um, all going according to plan and title.
33:34That was the original plan.
33:35Sure.
33:36Probably not.
33:37Not going to happen.
33:38The motif will be done and then it will be finished off in whatever gets it finished.
33:44Well, I'm going to leave you both to it.
33:46You seem very focused and very, you know...
33:48Stressed?
33:49That's what you're looking for.
33:50I wouldn't say stress.
33:51How can you be stressed when you're crocheting and knitting?
33:53That's what you do to relieve stress, right?
33:55Have you been here for the last two weeks?
33:57Mm-hmm.
33:58Well, I'll leave you to it.
34:00Bye, Tom.
34:01Bye.
34:02I mean, Holger and Isaac have taken a huge risk with going with a thin yarn because although
34:09they can work slightly quicker with it, it grows so slowly.
34:14So they are probably the team that's worrying me the most at the moment.
34:18We're going to sew together, the two strips, as soon as they have a length that we can work with.
34:27While Holger and Isaac struggle to join their complicated design together...
34:31What do I do? Just give it a go?
34:33..it's the moment of truth for Dipti and Stephanie.
34:39I'm in, but I'm sinking.
34:43Right.
34:45It's got a lot more give to it than we were totally expecting at all.
34:50I don't know what to do.
34:51I think we undo the beech end and...
35:00Cut.
35:04Nine.
35:05The knitters are in the final stages of crocheting a true British design classic, the deck chair.
35:22I put it on back to front.
35:24Holger and Isaac have made a last-minute stitch swap to the dangerous treble crochet
35:30to get their sling finally completed.
35:32You know, it's going to be a weak spot in the fabric of the deck chair,
35:36but it gives more substance quicker, doesn't it?
35:38But Stephanie and Dipti need to fix their oversized sling
35:42before they can even fit it to the frame.
35:44Get rid of that one.
35:46Do it, Stephanie, because I can't...
35:48Yes?
35:49Yeah, do it.
35:51It breaks my heart to cut it, but...
35:53I appreciate it breaks your heart, Angel.
36:00Knitters, you have one hour until I am going to be sitting on your deck chairs.
36:07The method I'm using is what's commonly known as pure and utter desperation.
36:13In the last hour, knitters must attach their sling securely to the frame.
36:17We're chaining the bottom up to the top, touching it straight to the wood,
36:22and then we can do the same with the sides.
36:24There'll be no sit test because...
36:26I want to sit in it.
36:27No, I'm not sitting in this and potentially break it.
36:30Oh, yeah!
36:32Can someone grab me a pina clara, please?
36:35Oh, look at the flowers coming together!
36:38The black outline, one's definitely stem,
36:40and the wine glass will make it pop from the surface.
36:44This whole thing's going to look great. I know it is.
36:47What about that?
36:48Yeah.
36:49We ice cream for Tom.
36:51Lovely.
36:53We come!
36:55Hookers, hooks down.
36:57Your time is up.
36:59The holiday, is it just beginning?
37:01Or is the holiday very much over?
37:04Look at that!
37:06That's cute.
37:07Yeah.
37:08All ye doubters.
37:10Um, yeah.
37:11It looks very stretchy, guys.
37:16I think that looks really nice, actually.
37:17Yeah.
37:18Yeah.
37:19I think we've done a marvellous job.
37:21Well done.
37:24In just eight hours, that's four classic crochet deck chairs complete.
37:30Holiday mode activated.
37:31Well done, hookers.
37:35Four deck chairs completed.
37:37It is now time to hear what Di, Sheila and Janie think of your amazing creations.
37:43So, we'll start with team number one.
37:50Oh, wow.
37:52Mmm.
37:54I like the flowers, but what I'm not so keen on is the placement of them.
37:58Yeah.
37:59This curvature.
38:00I think that's probably happened because of the way it's been tied at the back.
38:05Absolutely.
38:06It's nice to see some good stitch definition here, though.
38:08Mmm.
38:09This is like a cluster of three stitches.
38:11Mmm.
38:12That gives it that nice...
38:13It's almost sort of like a beach.
38:14Yes.
38:16And I guess the sea.
38:17So, that's really nice.
38:18I guess now is the time to see whether it'll hold my weight.
38:21Whoa.
38:22I feel like I should do a gentle swish into it.
38:25Oh, my gosh.
38:26Oh, my gosh.
38:27Oh, my gosh.
38:28Okay.
38:29Oh, the bungee hammock.
38:30Yay.
38:31Oh.
38:32It's actually quite comfortable, you know.
38:33Oh, very good.
38:34Very good.
38:35Yep.
38:36Well, there we go.
38:37Right, on to the next one.
38:38Yay.
38:39Let us know what you think.
38:43Oh, wow.
38:44Oh, goodness me.
38:45Oh, this is really nice, isn't it?
38:46This is a trip to the seaside.
38:48So, they've used that thicker, that really roped yarn.
38:51Oh, goodness me.
38:52Yeah.
38:53This one is extra specially functional.
38:55Oh, I like it.
38:56Fantastic stitch work.
38:58Yeah, yeah.
38:59So, it's really nice that they've used a stitch that is evocative of a shell as well.
39:03Yeah, it's really nice.
39:04There are some great small details in it, aren't there?
39:07Right, here we go.
39:08You're safe.
39:09Got my ice cream.
39:10Oh.
39:11Oh.
39:12Oh.
39:13Oh.
39:14How does that feel, Tom?
39:15Yeah.
39:16I mean, it's holding my weight.
39:18Sure.
39:19It's comfortable.
39:20It's fit for purpose, isn't it?
39:21Yeah, it is.
39:22Functionality.
39:23Yeah.
39:24Yeah, absolutely.
39:30Here we go, deck chair number three.
39:32Oh.
39:33Oh, goodness.
39:34Yeah.
39:35Wow.
39:36Yes.
39:37Some very interesting extra touches.
39:41And it's one panel.
39:42It doesn't go round the back.
39:43No.
39:44So, it's only attached with...
39:47With the cord.
39:48With a sewn...
39:49Yeah.
39:50..cord.
39:51Yeah.
39:52Granny squares are quite a basic stitch.
39:55So, it's just a treble stitch.
39:56Yes.
39:57I would have liked the edging to be neater.
40:00Yeah.
40:01I'm never sure about outlining things in black.
40:04You lay yourself open to having to do a really, really neat job.
40:09Yeah.
40:10I'm not quite sure about the cocktail glass.
40:13I think...
40:14I thought at first it was a fish.
40:16Yeah.
40:17Here we go.
40:18Right, let's get into this.
40:20Ooh.
40:21Ooh.
40:22A low squat.
40:24LAUGHTER
40:25Yeah.
40:26It's just about holding.
40:28There's definitely a wee bit of a droop there.
40:30It did have a lot more give in it than the others.
40:32Yes.
40:33Yeah.
40:34And here we have our final deck chair.
40:40Wow.
40:41Here we have it.
40:42Oh.
40:43Oh, so this is the final yarn.
40:45It's chips, isn't it?
40:46In a cone.
40:47In some newspaper.
40:48Yeah.
40:49Newspaper.
40:50Fab.
40:51From a technical point of view.
40:52Yeah.
40:53That's really...
40:54It is.
40:55...really good.
40:56Intarsia crochet.
40:57Yeah.
40:58So, that's a really complicated technique.
41:00I can't help feeling they've done a really good...
41:03They have.
41:04Mm.
41:05They have.
41:06It really evokes the chips in a cone, doesn't it?
41:08They've gone from...
41:09This is double crochet.
41:10They've gone double and they've gone to...
41:12Into trebles.
41:13Trebles.
41:14Yeah.
41:15So, the fact that the treble's here at the bottom...
41:16Mm.
41:17..it's going to be a bit loose there.
41:19Yeah.
41:20Using the final yarn was pretty brave.
41:23What I am a bit concerned about is this line where they've sewn it down here.
41:27When you're away from it, you don't notice it.
41:29No.
41:30But up close, you can really see that line.
41:32No, you're absolutely right.
41:33Um...
41:34That is a shame.
41:35Yeah.
41:36Shall we try it out?
41:37Yeah.
41:38Yes.
41:39Are we ready?
41:40Okay.
41:41Whoa!
41:42Whoa!
41:43Whoa!
41:44Whoa!
41:45Whoa!
41:46Are you...
41:47I'm hitting...
41:48I am on the floor.
41:50Whoa!
41:51Oh, my goodness.
41:52Here we go.
41:53Whoa!
41:54Thank you.
41:55Yeah.
41:56Oh, what a shame.
42:03Time for Janie to reveal the results.
42:06In fourth place is the granny square, this one.
42:13We think the whole granny square thing is a bit safe.
42:17In third place is the lovely cone of chips.
42:22Oh, guys, I really...
42:24I love...
42:25I love this.
42:26Just such a shame it failed the function test.
42:29In second place is this one with the stripes.
42:35So then the first place, which is very exciting,
42:38with the beach huts and the sunshine and the seagull,
42:41it fitted the purpose.
42:43It didn't sag when Tom sat in it.
42:46And it just evokes everything about seaside.
42:48So we loved it.
42:50Well done, everyone.
42:51Yes.
42:52And crochet-lations to the whole time.
42:56Simon and Elsa.
42:57I know they get worse every time, don't they?
43:03I think I was holding out a little bit of hope
43:05that maybe it would hold.
43:07But, yeah, that was pretty disappointing.
43:10Zowers did actually perform.
43:13You could sit on it and your bum didn't touch the floor.
43:16So from that perspective, I was very, very disappointed.
43:21This week was completely on the fly.
43:23I am really hoping that the group challenge has saved my bacon.
43:30What a holiday week.
43:31I mean, we've had deck chairs, we've had swimsuits, bikinis,
43:35you name it.
43:36So who do you think has done particularly well this week?
43:40It's been a great week for Lydia.
43:42I mean, that one piece was pretty spectacular.
43:47Lots of stitches and techniques.
43:49I loved it.
43:50I absolutely loved it.
43:53We also did love Elsa's piece.
43:55That was spectacular.
43:57So who is in danger this week of being cast off?
44:03Stephanie.
44:05She failed on the deck chair challenge.
44:08That's where we get down to the design skills
44:11and she doesn't execute them terribly well.
44:15They're not clear.
44:16Her solo effort was also not very inspiring.
44:23Isaac, in the group challenge, structurally getting it wrong.
44:29In his solo challenge, glamour wasn't entirely present.
44:34Simon is also at risk because of the solo challenge.
44:42Yes.
44:43I think his planning went completely out of the window
44:46and he was winging it, basically.
44:48He was.
44:49This is a tough decision.
44:51It is.
44:52And I'm glad that I have nothing to do with it and that it is on YouTube.
44:55Well, thank you. Thank you, Tom.
44:56Welcome, knitters, to our knitting circle.
45:08Now is time to find out who's knit big
45:11and who is going to be leaving the yarn bar.
45:16We have chosen this week's big knitter
45:21and it's Lydia.
45:32And I think we all know what's coming next.
45:35So, can we give Lydia a big bang?
45:39And here is your sheet bang.
45:41Thank you.
45:42Congratulations.
45:43Congratulations.
45:48Now, of course, this is a competition
45:50and it gets harder and harder every week.
45:53But we have to cast someone off.
45:57And the person being cast off this week is...
46:05Stephanie.
46:09No. No, it's fine.
46:11It's all good.
46:12Thank you very much for being here. Thank you.
46:15It's been fabulous. Thank you so much.
46:17It's been an amazing job, honestly.
46:18We will miss seeing your smiling face.
46:20Thank you.
46:22Well done.
46:24Thank you.
46:26I flippin' hope I've staked my ground in the competition now.
46:29And, you know, actually, to be fair, even if I go out next week,
46:33there was one week where what I did was the best
46:35and that, for me, is fantastic.
46:37I believe in the competition absolutely gutted.
46:41It's been great fun.
46:42Just to experience knitting something different.
46:45If you'd have asked me to knit a deck chair,
46:47I would never have known where to start.
46:50All I can say to the knitters here is,
46:52do your best and just put love in every stitch.
46:55Next time, it's playtime in the yarn barn.
47:02I'm done, baby.
47:04As the knitters crochet kids' fancy dress.
47:07It looks a little bit like a toilet seat.
47:09Honestly, it's got to the point where I'm just delirious.
47:13And go wild with wall hanging.
47:16Have you had a chance to look and see what the other team is doing?
47:18We're not interested in the losing team.
47:21I mean, the competition's getting real now.
47:24How long have we got?
47:25It doesn't matter. Just go as fast as you can.
47:27OK, OK.
47:33Go exploring on board some lavish liners
47:36that are destinations within themselves.
47:38Tomorrow at 8, we're inside the world's most luxurious cruises.
47:42Next tonight, every cabin holds secrets
47:44as simmering tensions threaten to erupt
47:46in Channel 4's brand new drama, Summer Water.
