00:00What do you think your friends will think of you riding a camel on the beach?
00:04It wasn't hard for Natalie to get Jay to ditch his Alaskan roots
00:08and move closer to her mom in Australia.
00:11For the kids, however...
00:13Their first reaction to moving to Port Macquarie, I think, was no.
00:16And I'm just, like, crossing my fingers that they're going to be happy.
00:20Take a step back in time here.
00:22I like it.
00:23I think it's about being able to afford a nice home that has potential
00:27and we can still afford to make it ours.
00:30Only blue.
00:31I know.
00:31Yeah.
00:32It's big, though.
00:33They've gone through such a huge move.
00:34I think he's ready to find a home where everything's done.
00:37He can keep the kids happy.
00:38If you want to paint the walls, go for it.
00:40Seriously trying to fight a project.
00:53It's beautiful weather.
00:54It's awesome, honey.
00:55Oh, beware of snakes.
00:57There you go.
00:58Watch your step.
00:59I'm from Fairbanks, Alaska, originally, like, middle of Alaska.
01:03It wasn't rural, but it was a small town.
01:04And I'm from Australia, originally.
01:06I got my love of traveling from my dad and mom.
01:10I grow up and I'm like, okay, I'm going to backpack through Alaska.
01:14And then eventually found Jay.
01:15We went out on the town in Anchorage.
01:17It turns out Natalie got bitten by a spider and her whole face swole up.
01:22But it went away, thank God, and formed a relationship, got married, and it worked out.
01:26You're going to jump in?
01:27No.
01:28You sure?
01:28It's too cold.
01:29I don't think it's going to be cold.
01:31Maybe it won't.
01:31So we have Chase, who's 13, and Hope's almost 11.
01:35And we moved all the time because we were a military family.
01:39We started our life in Texas and then back to Alaska, where I was a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
01:45And then the last five years of my career, I went down to Virginia.
01:47When we get a dog, we're coming here.
01:51Now that Jay has retired from the military, they have his pension and money from a home sale to use while exploring new career paths in Australia.
02:00My dad passed away in 2021, and we moved here to be closer to my mom and my family before the kids got too old.
02:08We looked at several towns in the mid-north coast, but something about Port Macquarie just fit the bill.
02:13Natalie's mom lives about three hours from Port Macquarie.
02:16I think she'll be staying for like one to three weeks at a time.
02:19But I've never lived in Port Macquarie before.
02:21I've visited a few times, and it was insanely gorgeous.
02:25Jay has always wanted to live on the beach, so it felt like, okay, this is the place.
02:30Being able to walk to the beach and enjoying the lifestyle here.
02:33It's so foreign.
02:34I think that's a huge draw for me.
02:36Port Macquarie, it's called the mid-north coast.
02:38We have some of the best weather in Australia, and you can be in the water year-round as well.
02:43We have great places to hike.
02:45Tourism is a big part of the industry here.
02:48Port Macquarie's population is about 86,000, and a lot of families are relocating here.
02:53So, good houses.
02:55There will be plenty of other people looking at them as well.
02:58I actually moved here from North Carolina 12 years ago.
03:00Okay.
03:01So, I know how it feels.
03:03Yeah, it's nerve-wracking.
03:04The kids' first reaction to moving to Australia, I think, was no.
03:08Or maybe you're joking, right?
03:10So, the pressure's on.
03:11Getting the kids ready, where we're all happy, and where we're not financially stressing about things.
03:16I think that's going to take time.
03:18So, what are you looking for?
03:20Definitely four bedrooms.
03:21Okay.
03:22The kids, they need their own space.
03:24And my mom, we want her to be out of visit and have her own space.
03:27Okay.
03:28And I'd really like a fixer-upper.
03:30Okay, a fixer-upper.
03:31I love seeing potential in a space.
03:32So, something that's already got some character.
03:35Yeah.
03:35I'm okay with a little bit of work, but I don't want to put too much into it.
03:38I want something moving ready.
03:40Okay.
03:40Don't you want to feel like you're on holiday all the time and not grab a hammer and start bashing stuff down?
03:44I think for me, I want to be able to walk to the beach.
03:48This is like paradise for me.
03:49Definitely a place for the pool, because it gets really hot here.
03:54And our son would love a yard.
03:55Just needs to have some space.
03:58That's kind of it.
03:59Followed extremely closely by a dog-friendly home.
04:03All right, so what is your budget?
04:04What are you guys wanting to invest in a property?
04:07About a mil.
04:08Okay.
04:09Like, to be able to renovate and put money into it.
04:12So, under that would be great.
04:14Okay.
04:15I'd be wanting to stretch a little bit if you found that perfect property.
04:17For the right place?
04:18Yeah.
04:18Their budget is a bit above the average, but they've gone through such a huge move.
04:22I think he's ready to find a home where everything's done.
04:25He can just move in and relax.
04:27But Natalie really wants to put her own stamp on it.
04:30We're heading to a house that's in an area called the Hastings.
04:33And Natalie can get her fixer-upper fix.
04:36I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
04:38Hopefully, Jay can be comfortable with that.
04:40This is a nice area.
04:42Can you see the ocean?
04:42You can see the ocean from here.
04:44It's a long walk, but you're very close to two really popular beaches.
04:48No way.
04:48That's cool.
04:49And it's a good family neighborhood, and this is a very central neighborhood.
04:52This looks pretty dated.
04:53I don't know.
04:53When was this built?
04:54Do we know?
04:55Like the 70s or 80s?
04:56Yeah, this was early 80s.
04:57But I love the long veranda.
04:59So, from the get-go, it feels really welcoming.
05:02This one's a four-bedroom, two-bathroom.
05:05Okay.
05:05Although it doesn't currently have a pool, with this huge front yard, I'd actually recommend putting a pool in right there.
05:11Okay.
05:11Just putting a nice fence around it.
05:13That's a bit of a concern because our future dog needs a good yard space.
05:17How much are they asking for the house?
05:19Well, Natalie, this is your fixer-upper.
05:21So, this one's $700.
05:22How much fixer-upper are we talking about?
05:24It looks like it has potential.
05:26I like it.
05:27All right.
05:27Well, let's get in there.
05:28Okay.
05:28All right.
05:30Okay.
05:32Wow.
05:33So, take a step back in time here.
05:36I mean, yes, it needs work.
05:39But so far, this is nice.
05:41I don't know.
05:42It just needs a lot.
05:43I feel like it's just a lot of cosmetic work.
05:46Well, the whole kitchen's got to be remodeled, right?
05:48We'll get help with that.
05:49Yeah, but we've got to live through that.
05:50Unless you want to do it with me.
05:52Not really.
05:54Yeah.
05:55I think it's about being able to afford a nice home that has potential, and we can still afford to make it ours.
06:02The first time I met you, I knew you had potential.
06:05And what's through here?
06:07It's currently a rumpus room with a bar.
06:09This could be a nice private room, a great space for your mom.
06:13We don't have to rip out everything.
06:14We could keep the bar and put mom here.
06:16I mean, I'm just saying it's...
06:17Yeah, still room for a bed.
06:18She won't mind.
06:19A couple of shots before bedtime.
06:21Possibility.
06:21Yeah.
06:22And you're not going to believe this.
06:24In the garage, there's actually a shower and toilet just behind us.
06:27Right?
06:28It's a little non-conventional.
06:30Oh, my God.
06:30But it would do the job.
06:31What is that?
06:32It would work.
06:32That's a...
06:33That's a toilet with a little sink.
06:36Yep.
06:37Okay.
06:37And then the shower is right there.
06:39Oh, yeah.
06:39This is like...
06:40For mom.
06:41Yeah.
06:42And it's connected to the laundry.
06:45Yeah, we might need to do something with it.
06:47Yeah.
06:47I would rather spend a little more to get a house that's moving ready than get a cheaper
06:53house where it needs a lot of money to get moving ready and the paint that goes with it.
06:58All right.
06:59Let's go and check out the kids' bedrooms and the bathroom.
07:02Okay.
07:04Whoa.
07:05Yeah.
07:05I mean, it's outdated, but it's pretty clean.
07:07Another good thing is both bedrooms are pretty much the same size, so there shouldn't be any fighting amongst your kids.
07:13Okay.
07:15And then this is your main bedroom.
07:17Yeah.
07:17Big king-size main with, like, an enormous wall of built-ins there.
07:22Yeah.
07:22Wow.
07:23Come check out your bathroom.
07:26Whoa.
07:27Whoa.
07:28Look at that thing.
07:29Yeah.
07:29It's like a honeymoon suite.
07:31Let me get in this thing.
07:32And it's got the spa jets.
07:34Okay.
07:35This thing is huge.
07:36All right.
07:37Let's sit here and see what it's like.
07:39Okay.
07:39Not bad.
07:40I feel like the only thing when we're missing is this clamshell.
07:44You could always make it part of the renovation.
07:46Yeah.
07:47My family home is more like an egg loot, so don't ask me.
07:51I like the space.
07:53There's a lot of projects.
07:54I don't know.
07:55I mean, it's a huge project for us.
07:57I think it's got a lot of potential.
08:00Not really a lot of character to it.
08:03I mean, it's pretty brown.
08:05It's pretty new, though.
08:06It looks updated.
08:07I mean, from the outside.
08:07It is really modern.
08:08Okay.
08:09Move in ready?
08:10Is that what you're saying?
08:10Move in ready.
08:11We'll see about that.
08:13Yeah.
08:17Woo.
08:18It's like Bunkin' Bronco.
08:20Oh, that's high.
08:21Yeah.
08:22I grew up in a small town, Alaska, and it was a lot of winter.
08:26Eight months of winter.
08:27Very dark, very snowy, very cold, but never had an opportunity to live near a warm beach
08:32or a warm climate, so I've always been drawn to that tropical feel.
08:35How fast do these run?
08:37Camels can get up to 70 k's an hour with a little bit of training.
08:39If they start to run, just hold on tight.
08:42All right.
08:43I know how Jay's possibly feeling because I moved to the States to be with him, and it's
08:48daunting.
08:48Little day-to-day things can be a bit of a struggle, so I want Jay to be happy.
08:54Hey, you guys know why Wednesday's a camel's favorite day?
08:57Because it's hump day.
08:58Hump day!
08:59You knew it?
09:00Yeah.
09:00You knew the answer already?
09:02Whereas with the kids, I've never gone through what they're going through right now, and I
09:07feel really guilty about it, and I'm just, like, crossing my fingers that they're going
09:11to be happy because we're coming here so my mom can come and visit.
09:15We can be together, and Jay's, like, all for it.
09:18What do you call a three-hump camel?
09:20What?
09:21Pregnant.
09:22You're horrible.
09:24It is daunting for kids, I think, moving to such a new place, such a different place.
09:30I'm sure they're a bit anxious, but I think that they're going to love it.
09:33Doreen hopes to give Jay something more move-in ready, but to keep it affordable, they can't
09:38have it all.
09:39In this neighborhood, it's very family-friendly.
09:41There's lots of kids.
09:43That's good.
09:43Okay.
09:44So what's the proximity to the beach?
09:46Oh, it's about a 10-minute drive.
09:47I mean, it's definitely biking distance as well, just not walking distance.
09:50That could be a hassle.
09:51But it's four bedrooms, two bathrooms.
09:53That's good.
09:54And the pool.
09:56So that's done.
09:56It's a pool, too.
09:57Very dog-friendly.
09:58Not really a lot of character to it.
10:01I mean, it's pretty brown.
10:03It looks pretty new, though.
10:03It looks updated.
10:04It looks new.
10:05It is really modern.
10:06Okay.
10:07Move-in ready?
10:07Is that what you're saying?
10:08Move-in ready.
10:08We'll see about that.
10:10And how much are they asking?
10:12They're asking a million.
10:13It's where we need to be, but it doesn't leave a lot of room just to, you know, have a
10:17bit of fun with it.
10:18Just be open?
10:18Be open to it?
10:19I'm being open.
10:20I'm being open.
10:20All right.
10:21Check it out.
10:23Wow.
10:23These are really wide hallways.
10:24This is nice.
10:25It is.
10:26The extra high ceilings give it a great sense of space.
10:28It's nice and open.
10:29And then on this level, there's a great option for your mom as well.
10:33Okay.
10:34Yeah.
10:34This is a nice size.
10:36We want it to be her bedroom.
10:37It's easy to put indoors.
10:39Yeah, absolutely.
10:40And then everything will be on the one level for your mom.
10:42The space was really good though, like, because there are stairs involved and usually she's
10:47okay with that.
10:47Sometimes she's not.
10:49And just around the corner, there's a toilet here with an extra sink.
10:53Okay, that works.
10:54And then just beyond it is the laundry.
10:56I really think there's room where you could add a shower.
10:59So you could have a full bathroom for your mom all on this level.
11:03We'd have to put a shower in.
11:04We'd have to.
11:05Yeah.
11:05So that's got to be factored in, I guess.
11:07Yeah.
11:07And when it's already at the top of what we're willing to spend, not sure how we'd work with
11:12that.
11:14And here's the kitchen.
11:15It's a beautiful, big, bright, open space.
11:19But holy blue.
11:20I know.
11:21Yeah.
11:21It's big though.
11:22I kind of want to take a hammer to it right now, to be honest.
11:26I could live with it for sure.
11:27It's not my favorite, but if she wants to change the backsplash, you know, we could work
11:31with that.
11:32Maybe the upstairs will wow you.
11:34Let's go check it out.
11:35All right.
11:36What do you think of this?
11:37Oh, wow.
11:38Yeah.
11:38Our son would love this room.
11:39Yeah, that's a good size room.
11:41And then there's two more bedrooms here.
11:44They're approximately the same size.
11:46Yeah.
11:46Yeah, they are a good size.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Yeah, this works well.
11:49There's plenty of space.
11:50And there's a huge main bathroom.
11:53This is beautiful.
11:54I like the bathtub.
11:56Yeah, this is a really nice space.
11:58Yours is nicer.
11:59Yeah.
12:00How big is this bathroom?
12:01It's got dual sinks.
12:03The basin and the cabinets are so low.
12:07The taps are terrible.
12:09I can live with that.
12:10Yeah.
12:11But I thought you'd love this.
12:12This is nice.
12:13That's a king size bed.
12:14Right.
12:14So plenty of space.
12:15Nice spacious room.
12:16And then you have your own private balcony.
12:18Okay.
12:18See the mountains?
12:19You get a breeze here.
12:20Yeah.
12:22Sometimes when we're looking at houses
12:24and you just can't find that right one,
12:26it's a little heartbreaking.
12:28It's not just grabbing you and saying,
12:30this is your home.
12:31And it would be really nice to have that experience.
12:34We have saved the best for last.
12:36Okay.
12:37Babe.
12:37Wow, look at this view.
12:39Woo.
12:40I like that.
12:41I like the palms, banana tree.
12:43Yeah.
12:43We've got a good entertaining area there.
12:45Yeah.
12:46What do you think of the pool?
12:47I think the pool is lovely.
12:48I think the yard's pretty small.
12:51You can still have a dog in that yard.
12:52It's not huge.
12:53Absolutely.
12:54The house has most of what I want,
12:55but I can't walk to the beach
12:57and it's a long bike ride.
12:58So that's something I've got to weigh in for sure.
13:00I was kind of after something
13:01that had a little bit more character,
13:03was a little bit more unique.
13:04And this just seems a little like,
13:06bleh.
13:09Oh, wow.
13:11Oh, this is nice.
13:12And then you just walk across the street
13:14and you're down at the beach.
13:15I love it.
13:15So for all those things,
13:16you do have to pay a little bit extra.
13:18Well, they say home is where the heart is
13:20and my heart is in that home.
13:22Seriously, he's in La La Land.
13:23It's been over 16 years
13:28since I've been living in Australia
13:30and you become a little bit American.
13:33But it's really nice to be home.
13:35We love seeing the koala signs around town,
13:38slow down koalas about.
13:40We have the highest population of koalas
13:43on the east coast of Australia.
13:45Oh, cute.
13:46I would say Natalie, first and foremost,
13:49is an amazing partner and mother
13:51and you're not afraid to take risks,
13:53which is awesome
13:53because we're here in Port Macquarie, right?
13:55We could have played it safe, stayed in Virginia.
13:57Yeah.
13:58But we said, let's roll the dice
13:59and just see how this new adventure goes.
14:01Try it on.
14:02See if it fits.
14:05That's a good look on you.
14:06I like that.
14:07That's cute.
14:08I think she's feeling the pressure more as a mom,
14:11you know, to make the kids happy.
14:12Your family, they must be so excited
14:14to have you home and your kids.
14:16Yeah, the kids are hesitant.
14:19There's a lot of sports here,
14:21but every single sport I play
14:23isn't played here in Australia,
14:25so I'm going to have to pick up a lot of sports, you know?
14:28But it's time to give Australia a go,
14:31like let the kids have this experience,
14:33be closer to my family.
14:35We just wanted to leave it all behind
14:37and just start over fresh.
14:38Part of Jay's fresh start
14:40is ditching his Alaskan roots
14:41to be close to the sand and surf,
14:44so Doreen is shooting for the moon for him
14:46with a home that also has space
14:48ready to go for Natalie's mom.
14:50This property is in Port Macquarie's top suburb.
14:52It's walking distance to the beach,
14:54and it's perfectly renovated,
14:55so for all those things,
14:56you do have to pay a little bit extra.
14:58This neighborhood is called White House Beach.
15:01Very tropical.
15:03You can just walk out your backyard
15:04and be at Miner's Beach,
15:06and then you can walk out that way
15:08and you can be at Lighthouse Beach.
15:09Oh, no way. That is cool.
15:12This one's a four-bedroom, three-bathroom.
15:14And dog-friendly.
15:15Very dog-friendly.
15:16That's cool.
15:17It doesn't look like much of a fixer-upper.
15:19It is not a fixer-upper at all.
15:20Someone has done all the hard work.
15:22Move-in ready?
15:23Yeah, move-in ready.
15:24Now we're talking.
15:25So what's the price?
15:26This one is $1.2 million.
15:28Okay.
15:28But you'll see, it's really worth every penny.
15:31Okay. I guess if it's move-in ready,
15:33check it out. It's a possibility.
15:34Okay.
15:34I can't wait for you guys to see this house.
15:37Come on in.
15:39Oh, wow.
15:40Oh, this is nice.
15:42It's such a good, entertaining house.
15:44It's got its own separate dining room here.
15:46Yeah, this is nice.
15:47And then it just opens up
15:48into this big, gorgeous living area.
15:50And then look at the kitchen.
15:52Oh, that's gorgeous.
15:53I like how everything's clean and open
15:55and just the beachy vibe
15:57that I'm getting from this place.
15:58I'd rather have, like,
15:59the colors of turmeric and the dockwood.
16:02If you want to paint the walls, go for it.
16:03Seriously trying to fight a project.
16:06Can't wait to show you
16:07this great option for your mom.
16:09Okay.
16:10So this is the guest room.
16:12Yeah.
16:13Oh, that's lovely.
16:14Your mom would love this room.
16:15It's very peaceful.
16:16This is the fourth bedroom.
16:18So why don't we go upstairs
16:19and look at the rest of the bedroom?
16:21Yeah. All right.
16:21Sounds good.
16:21And the kids' rooms are on your left.
16:24And right across from the bedrooms
16:26is the main bathroom.
16:27This could be Chase's room, maybe?
16:29Yeah, these are great.
16:31I like how the rooms are the same size,
16:32so it's good.
16:34That's it.
16:34The kids won't fight over those two bedrooms.
16:36And that main has a great soaking tub,
16:38and it's got a beautiful shower.
16:41Oh, that bathtub is really nice.
16:43Super clean.
16:44I like it.
16:44Yeah.
16:45I don't know anyone
16:46who wouldn't like this house.
16:48My mom can stay and be comfortable,
16:50but pushing the limit of what we want to spend,
16:53don't like it at all.
16:54All right.
16:55I think you're going to love the main bedroom.
16:59It's a really good size.
17:00Yeah, it's really bright and airy, too.
17:02Yeah.
17:03Look at the drawers
17:04and the covered space,
17:05so it's always going to be neat and tidy.
17:07Two closets.
17:08Yeah.
17:08Yeah, so this is good.
17:10And then check out the en suite.
17:11Okay.
17:12Looks pretty moving ready to me.
17:15Nothing to do here.
17:16Yeah, I like that.
17:17Yeah, okay.
17:18All right, I can't wait for you to see the yard.
17:21Oh, this is nice.
17:23Wow.
17:23This looks like it's ready for a dog.
17:25A dog, kids.
17:27A dog and kids.
17:28Pool parties.
17:28It's beautiful.
17:29And then you just walk across the street
17:31and you're down at the beach.
17:32I love it.
17:32It's like moving ready.
17:34I think the kids would love it.
17:35It's got everything on our wish list.
17:36There's space for mum already,
17:38but this house definitely is maxing out
17:41what I'm willing to spend.
17:43Well, they say home is where the heart is,
17:45and my heart is in that home.
17:47Seriously, he's in la-la land.
17:48There's always credit cards, right?
17:50We can float some checks, you know?
17:52Yeah.
17:52It'll be all right.
17:54I feel like we could definitely be happy for a while,
17:56but I do think eventually you want to renovate a home
17:59that makes you feel like it's yours,
18:01and I just feel like it would feel like someone else's.
18:04So we'll definitely have to talk about that.
18:08Do you want to do a little skip here?
18:10One, two, three.
18:14I think Natalie, you know,
18:16having made the huge move back to Australia
18:18for her mum and for the family,
18:20she definitely feels the weight of that,
18:22but they are both going to have to compromise
18:24because finding the house that Natalie can feel
18:26she can put her personality into,
18:28and Jay not wanting to put time and work into a property
18:31just to keep everyone happy, including the kids.
18:34That's probably the main conflict.
18:36The fixer-upper.
18:38I mean, it would be so comfortable financially
18:40to buy a place like that
18:42and still be able to afford to make it our own.
18:45But are you ready to take on that much renovation?
18:49There's a toilet with a little sink.
18:50Yeah.
18:51Okay.
18:52And then the shower is right there.
18:53Oh, yeah, this is, like, for mum.
18:56Yeah.
18:57Okay.
18:58So the two-story house.
19:00It's got plenty of room for all of us.
19:02Room for your mum, but that yard is smaller,
19:04and you can't walk to the beach.
19:06And it's not our style.
19:07Holy blue.
19:08Kind of want to take a hammer to it right now,
19:11to be honest.
19:12So we've got the beach move-in ready house.
19:14It's got a big backyard.
19:15It's got a pool.
19:16Walking distance to the beach.
19:17That's nice.
19:18Kind of expensive.
19:19Kind of.
19:20There's always credit cards, right?
19:22We can float some checks, you know?
19:24Yeah.
19:24It'll be all right.
19:35Do we really want to start that huge renovation?
19:38I want to get settled.
19:39I want to get the kids moved in.
19:41I think we should mark off the big renovation house.
19:43I was looking forward to, like, a project,
19:45but Doreen definitely showed us a demo job.
19:48It's scary.
19:48That one's bigger than I know you'd want to do.
19:51I'm not ready for that.
19:52Let's mark that off the list.
19:53All right.
19:54We'll cross off the renovation.
19:56I know you love the beach house.
19:59Being able to walk to the beach.
20:00Yeah, I know.
20:00That's a big thing.
20:01It's got a lot of pros.
20:03I get it.
20:04But it's $1.2 million.
20:05So the two-storey, it had the smaller yard,
20:09and then we'd still have to put in a shower.
20:12But we're going to have to compromise no matter what.
20:15I want us to be able to enjoy this area
20:18instead of worrying about a mortgage
20:20that would maybe overextend us.
20:23Two-storey brick.
20:24It's got space for more than just my mom to come and visit.
20:27Your family could visit.
20:28That's true.
20:29And I guess the beach house is expensive, you know?
20:32Yeah.
20:33I think I'd be willing to compromise
20:34and go with the bigger two-storey brick home.
20:39OK.
20:40All right, here comes the puck drop.
20:42Go.
20:43I'm feeling pretty good about being back home.
20:45We haven't found full-time work yet,
20:47but we're trying to settle down, see what comes our way.
20:50And we can ride our bikes to the beach, maybe 15, 20 minutes.
20:53So the proximity wasn't as big as I thought.
20:57Yay!
20:59Now this is a puppy house.
21:02Yeah, it's so great to have you home.
21:04It's really good to be home.
21:05Come here, don't cry.
21:06Don't cry.
21:07Otherwise you'll make me cry.
21:09And Mom's been here a fair few times now.
21:11We have the shower set up for her.
21:12That was the big thing.
21:14It went fairly quickly.
21:15It did.
21:16And everything else we're just trying to work with for now.
21:19The kids still miss home.
21:20It's going to take a while.
21:21But I think this house works wonderfully for our family.
21:25One, two, three.
21:27Yeah!
