00:00Kentucky, we're in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
00:03Ah, let me swap these out. Let me get some regular potato chips down there.
00:06No problem. Here you go, sir. Whatever you want, Doug.
00:09Thank you. I appreciate you calling me, sir.
00:12I can't tell you how hard my job is.
00:14Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30Today on Sam's Garage, the clock is ruthless.
00:52We dive into leg five of the great race, nine days, 2300 miles,
00:57and hidden checkpoints testing family, focus, and finesse.
01:01In Frankfort, Kentucky, heritage meets horsepower
01:04as father-son crews and daughters on the notes keep those flatheads singing.
01:09Then we head to Southfield Classics,
01:11where a vintage Chevy look hides an electric heart,
01:14400 volts tamed by smart 12-volt control.
01:18And finally, our Catalina Redemption, ProFlow EFI, Doug's headers,
01:23a low-car pedal, let's light the big poncho.
01:27We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:34Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance,
01:37and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:40From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:42Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:44It's a complete family member. It's an experience.
01:47All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:50Winning an ace in the great race is just,
01:52it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:54Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:56Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:58I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:00Nine days, 2,300 miles, and no map to the checkpoints.
02:04On leg five through Kentucky, fatigue meets finesse.
02:08It's family, teamwork, and split-second calls.
02:12Were we on time or way off?
02:14Sam's Garage is on the clock.
02:16Fifth leg, this is basically Hump Day.
02:20It's Wednesday.
02:20We're starting off in Owensboro, Kentucky.
02:22If you guys remember, we had a huge send-off last year.
02:25There was almost a parade going on in this town
02:27when we were sending off to go to the great race.
02:30This year, we're on our way to Elizabethtown,
02:32which is going to be our lunch stop.
02:33After that, we're on our way to Frankford, Kentucky,
02:36which is going to be our evening stop,
02:37and then we're going to spend the night in Lexington.
02:39And like I said, this is Hump Day.
02:41This is the day where a lot of people are tested.
02:43This is an endurance race not only for the car,
02:46even though it's slow speeds.
02:47It's 2,300 miles, but it's also an endurance race
02:50for the people, the support crew, everyone that's involved.
02:53It really taxes you because, like I said,
02:55here we are on the fifth day,
02:56and you can see people kind of dragging.
02:58They're tired.
02:59They're frustrated.
02:59Yesterday, we had a long day, a lot of little issues,
03:02and it really takes a toll on you emotionally.
03:05So that's what the great race is about.
03:06Let's go see how these guys are doing
03:08and send them off in safe travels.
03:09It's all about the one common interest that we all have,
03:13which is cars, automobiles, racing, camaraderie.
03:16That's what makes car guys the best.
03:18Doug and I are about to get into the Datsun
03:19and head out to Elizabethtown.
03:26Am I ready for lunch?
03:28Am I ready for air conditioning?
03:30Fertility, add lunch, great lunch, cold water, air conditioning.
03:35Don't forget to check out the back of the 110 degrees.
03:38Go for it.
03:38Stay was a lot of fun, though.
03:40There was a bunch of hills at 45 and this little thing.
03:42But it was a lot of fun, for sure.
03:46Beautiful roads, wonderful landscape.
03:48It was awesome.
03:49Great.
03:50It was nice.
03:50Very nice.
03:54Oh, man.
03:55Nice museum.
03:56This is very cool.
03:57Check out this Packard Museum.
03:58The Swope Cars of Yesteryear Museum, we have been open 26 years.
04:05Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Betty Swope, this is their private collection.
04:10We show half of our cars at one time.
04:12We have a total of 66, ranging from a 1910 brush to a 1970 Cobra Jet Torino.
04:20They collected the cars after they retired from the new car business.
04:25We had one old car, 39 Rolls Royce.
04:29All original.
04:30Stayed in the family until it sold to us.
04:33Absolutely a fabulous car.
04:36All original.
04:37And what we find really interesting about this car is the entire body is made out of aluminum.
04:43On this car right here, this is more like a town car.
04:46The top will actually unbolt and slide back so it's open over the driver.
04:52This is my spirit of ecstasy, also known as the Flying Lady.
04:56And I don't know if you all are aware, the center light right here will turn with the steering wheel.
05:01We do have one that was in the great race.
05:05Our 1948 Chrysler New Yorker three-window business coupe was a complete body-off-of-frame restoration done by the Astronaut High School in Florida.
05:15And when it was done, it did the great race from Washington State to Massachusetts and took second place.
05:21Now, that's my favorite car, and I love it because it has a fluid drive transmission that you can drive like an automatic or a manual.
05:30And that's going to be the precursor to the cars we have now that have the paddles behind the steering wheel.
05:45Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:50Brought to you by the following companies.
06:00Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:30We've got a lot of these vehicles with a lot of torque converters for this application.
07:00So we have Turbo 350s, 400s, Power Glides, some of the first, Cruis-O-Matics as well through Ford.
07:06A lot of these guys, they all have some performance parts of some kind on them.
07:10If you can't get OE, always go aftermarket because there are some specialty products that we make that you can't find anywhere else.
07:17Even the FMX torque converter or Turbo 350Cs.
07:21If you've got an automatic transmission, we've got something for you.
07:24Another thing we've got, also, we have new products coming out in our Flex Plates.
07:29So we just added another 150 new SKUs for the Boss Hog torque converter line.
07:35So this right here, we have some fantastic vehicles.
07:38Hemmings is sponsoring it.
07:39Coker Tire, Sam's Garage.
07:42Man, you've got to check these out.
07:43Coming up, our engineers are actually putting together a bolt-together torque converter that's going to fit almost every application out there.
07:50So if you need your hot rod to come up to it and really fix it, make it happen, make it more drivable so that you can put that thing on the road more often, Boss Hog torque converters is the way to go.
08:04I'm the driver, and Ms. Mallory is the navigator.
08:07Lucky me.
08:08Very much a John Klassen typical day on the rally.
08:11There were lots of speed changes, lots of signs we're having to split speeds, some high-speed turns, lots of combines and irrigation tractors and things like that.
08:22So it was a tricky day, relatively short, but it was challenging, but just the right amount.
08:29Well, we're not up to the standard we'd like to yet.
08:33Mallory's still getting used to the truck.
08:34This is the first time she's been in this truck, and the truck's not liking these mid-90s days.
08:39So we're struggling a little bit with that, but it's always good to get to the end.
08:43We get a little sticker in our book, which means we successfully completed the day.
08:47So that's always a good thing.
08:50We're learning something new every day, and we're trying new tactics.
08:53I've never been in a manual before.
08:56I've raised an automatic for the past, gosh, 12 years now.
08:59So it's a new challenge that I wasn't quite expecting,
09:03but each day we're tweaking things and kind of honing in different skills and different tricks and figuring it out.
09:10And we're getting a little better every day.
09:12So we started out really well, so we had a false sense of security.
09:16We did.
09:17With the practice run, the trophy rally, we did really well.
09:20But as the days go on and as the lengths get longer, the speeds get a little higher,
09:26and we found that we're a little off on some of the higher speeds.
09:28So for the longer days, it's been a little more of a challenge for us.
09:34But we're working on it.
09:35Yeah, we're getting there.
09:41They have to be 74 and older.
09:43We're going 2,300 miles total.
09:46We're going from St. Paul, Minnesota, all the way down to Irmo, South Carolina.
09:49And it taxed not only the car and the person.
09:53Driving the car, navigating in the car.
09:56Yeah, dude.
09:56We are sweating.
09:57We've lost weight.
09:58It's absolutely crazy.
09:59You got kids involved doing it with the RPM, the X Cup.
10:03You got an all-women's group, actually two of them, young kids as well.
10:07So it's really cool for the future motorsports of the youth.
10:10You know what I mean?
10:10Oh, yeah.
10:11Father's daughters, man.
10:12I've seen that out here as well, dude.
10:13It's just excellent.
10:15This is Nelson Gill.
10:16He is from Boss Hog Torque Converters, ACC Performance.
10:19I want to thank him for being one of the sponsors here at The Great Race for Sam's Garage.
10:23If it wasn't for him and our other sponsors, we would not be able to bring you the coverage
10:27of The Great Race to Sam's Garage.
10:29So make sure you guys tune in.
10:31Well, let's go get something to you, Nelson.
10:33Sounds good to me.
10:33Well, I got a good customer in mind named John.
10:48He's got a 1966 Corvette that we're going to be doing a whole bunch of work to.
10:51We're going to take the 327, freshen it up, and put a bunch of Summit Racing trick flow components
10:56on the top end, and I need to keep it cool.
10:58And one way to do that is going to be with an upgraded radiator.
11:01And I went ahead and went with Cold Case because that's what we do here.
11:05I love them.
11:06They do a great job with both customer service and fitment with their parts.
11:09Got a high-quality three-row aluminum radiator here along with an aluminum shroud and one huge
11:17fan that flows over 18 CFM.
11:19And it's going to completely cover that core of the radiator, making it nice and efficient.
11:24I mean, look at the fan shroud that came off the car.
11:26That is huge, intrusive, and broken.
11:29So it's not going to do a really good job.
11:31This is going to allow for a lot more room and efficiency because we are going to be adding
11:36AC to this car, and we got to keep it cool.
11:38So this one big fan is going to keep this Corvette nice and cool while he's driving down
11:42the road with his new 327.
11:49Welcome back to more Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
12:09Classic Chevy look at electric heart.
12:12From charge port to junction box, 400 volts becomes 12 to run everything.
12:17Southfield Classics' NOAA breaks down the system.
12:23We're back this week at Southfield Classics right here in Brazzleton, Georgia, where you
12:26guys can pick up a brand new Chevy truck like this one, all done within six months.
12:32We're going to talk about this week, the interior's wiring, 12 volts and high voltage.
12:38I'm here with NOAA.
12:38He is the shop foreman, and he's going to explain everything that goes on as far as the
12:44wiring goes in the truck.
12:45Yes, a lot of these electric vehicles in general, they're all obviously high voltage, right?
12:50In order for the motors to have the capacity to, you know, propel the engine, the weight
12:55and all.
12:55But they all also got to be controlled by a 12-volt system from which communicates with that.
13:00Tells it when to discharge the batteries.
13:03You know, you press the pedal down, discharge goes to the motor, you propel forward.
13:07It also tells it that it also recognizes, you know, to regen when you let go of the pedal
13:11to where it starts regening.
13:12So there's a lot of things that are inside the system itself that are very important
13:16to get it to working the right way you would want it to work.
13:19How much volts are we talking about range-wise?
13:22So this one right here has 400 volts.
13:24So let's look at some of the components that it takes to do this.
13:28All right, so what are we looking at here?
13:30This one is the junction box, and that over there is the CCS box.
13:34So what this does is obviously the 12-volt communication that it's receiving is from a pedal.
13:40So the pedal gives the information to the ECU that we have mounted here, and then once
13:45the ECU gets the communication, it sends that over into the junction box from which it's
13:50going to actually tell the batteries that, hey, this is what I need juice-wise, give it
13:54to me.
13:55And that's the inverter in the middle.
13:56Yes, in the middle, that is the inverter for all the 12-volt stuff that is needed.
14:00You can basically call it a charger, per se.
14:03So when this truck is running, that is producing somewhere around 13.5 to 14 volts straight to
14:10the battery.
14:11So while this thing running, it's constantly charging just like you would any regular vehicle.
14:15So this is normally where the gas tank would be, right?
14:24You'd have the gas cap out here, it'd be out very ugly.
14:27They made a very nice panel here where the plug goes into, right?
14:31Correct.
14:31So this was obviously intentional for the purpose of it being easy to get to, and those charge
14:37ports are pretty big.
14:38They're not very small.
14:39So we knew that we also had to tuck it away somewhere, a little bit more feasible where
14:43people can get to it.
14:44Well, and it's cool because that's where normally you would put fuel in it.
14:47Correct.
14:48So you're putting fuel in it a different way.
14:49Yes.
14:50Put it in the same location.
14:51Yes.
14:51So it keeps that characteristic of the truck.
14:53And you made a nice new panel that's flush.
14:55It's almost invisible when it's closed.
14:57Correct.
14:58Very nice job.
14:59Yes, yes.
14:59It's a very common spot.
15:01So when you turn the switch on on this car and you want to put it in gear, what do you
15:06do?
15:06Is there a button to select gear?
15:07Yeah.
15:08So typically for this one, since we have the systems that, you know, obviously to try to keep people
15:12from stealing your vehicle, you know, we have an ignition switch that's typically operated
15:16with the foot pedal on the brake from which sends the signal to the ignition.
15:20You turn it on and then it wakes everything up engaged in order for it to actually drive.
15:24So when you're at the charging station with the port attached, even though everything's
15:28on, no one can jump in and drive away.
15:30It automatically knows.
15:32Very cool.
15:33Thank you, Noah.
15:33This is a huge explanation.
15:35I know a lot of people out there had questions and you just answered so many questions for
15:38so many people.
15:39And you guys, Southfield Classics are building these awesome old school Chevy trucks, brand
15:44new with brand new VIN numbers to the nines with all the hot rod parts.
15:48As the season goes, we're going to be showing you how one is assembled and we're going to
15:51be educating you further on high voltage vehicles.
16:00Sam's garage is presented by NH oil undercoating is brought to you by the following companies.
16:30Welcome back to Sam's garage presented by NHLU.
16:53Last year, our Catalina stalled at the manifolds.
16:55Today, Edelbrock ProFlow EFI, Doug's headers from Summit and a low car firewall pedal, cable
17:03set, O2 bung in, time to fire this big contract.
17:07If you guys remember last year, exactly around this time, we did the Catalina.
17:13Julie and I built the whole top end by putting Edelbrock heads on it, Edelbrock ProFlow EFI
17:18and an Edelbrock fuel sump pump system, right?
17:22So, if you remember, we couldn't get manifolds on it, so I couldn't make it run.
17:26So, I went to Summit Racing, got me a set of Doug's headers and it runs now, which is really cool.
17:33I'll turn it on here for you in a second.
17:35The last thing we need to do to make it mobile is we need a pedal, cable and a bracket from
17:40low car for the Edelbrock.
17:42This one has the pedal on the floor.
17:43I'm going to put a low car pedal on the firewall so that we get regular actuation.
17:48All right, let's get started.
17:50All right, so what I did was first remove the pedal from the car, got me a new low car pedal.
17:56Instead of mounting it on the floor, we mounted it on the firewall.
18:06Made my hole.
18:08Make sure you measure your exterior cable without the interior cable in it because you'll cost
18:13yourself some money if you do that when you go to cut it.
18:15Julie and I did the outer cable, went ahead and put the bracket onto the Edelbrock from
18:19low car, went ahead and put the outer cable in.
18:30What I like to do is when I adjust the cable, I like to bring it in, make sure that the pedal
18:34is where you want it.
18:34Everything is in place.
18:35You got the inner cable through.
18:37When you go to measure it, I like to take it all the way to almost the very end.
18:41That will give you adjustability for the future.
18:45Now, it's very important that when you guys do your measurements that you make sure that
18:48the throttle plate opens all the way with the sweep of the pedal.
18:51You want the pedal to be on the floor and the butterflies be fully open.
18:55That way, the floor is holding the tension and not the cable.
19:01And now, everything is done.
19:02I went ahead and put an O2 sensor bung in.
19:04You saw that there was a 3-inch collector.
19:06It's actually 3.5 down to 2.5.
19:08So, I have to then connect the exhaust to the new headers because I had the exhaust done
19:13with the valvetronics, if you remember, last year.
19:16So, now I've got to go back and do a 2.5-inch pipe.
19:18It's only about 12 to 14 inches and a couple of angles.
19:21No big deal.
19:25So, everything is good.
19:42I think we can fire it up.
19:44You guys, I can't tell you how much I love the Edelbrock ProFlow EFI.
19:57So, this is a very nice system with the sump kit that we introduced here.
20:01With the Edelbrock ProFlow EFI, they got them for your most popular engines, for the Ford,
20:05the Chevy, old school, even the Mopars.
20:08They've got them for you.
20:09So, check it out.
20:10They do a really good job.
20:11It may not be a looker, but hopefully, it'll be a go-getter.
20:16Hopefully.
20:17That year that it sat outside, look at it.
20:19It got so dirty.
20:20But now that it runs, it's motivation to wash it.
20:22Yeah.
20:23You know, maybe even detail it, see if we can't get that paint back.
20:27If not, we'll just have to go get a Jimmy.
20:29All right.
20:29So, the Catalina is done.
20:31The Edelbrock ProFlow really worked out good.
20:32The whole Edelbrock top end on this thing worked out nice.
20:35So, next we're going to do is wash it, clean it up, and get it down to the upholstery guys
20:39so you can do the headliner.
20:40Sounds good.
20:41And then we'll be Mad Maxing it.
20:43Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:58Skill, grit, and a little grease under the nails, this is Sam's Garage.
21:03From rally checkpoints to EV swaps and a reborn Catalina, we keep the stories and the engines firing.
21:11Thanks for joining, and we'll see you on the next ride.
