QOTD: Which role player will you ALWAYS appreciate?
Transcript
00:00Who is a role player that you will always appreciate?
00:02713-572-460.
00:04Man, this can go any number of ways.
00:06Obviously, Texans, Rockets, Astros, at large, your favorite college team,
00:11whatever it may be.
00:13I don't know, like, whenever we get these questions out there,
00:16it's kind of funny what immediately pops into your mind.
00:21That's generally where you should go.
00:23I want to know what you guys are thinking.
00:25What name just popped into your mind?
00:27You and I, go ahead and say it because we had the same one.
00:29Did we?
00:30Yes.
00:31I don't even know if I said this.
00:31Kevin Walter.
00:32Kevin Walter, that's right.
00:34I was trying to figure, that's one of the things, though,
00:36is, like, football role player is kind of an interesting way to go.
00:40Like, obviously, role player in general, you think, not a star.
00:43But football is kind of funny in that there's so many specialized tasks
00:46that role player kind of ends up being tough.
00:49I think Kevin Walter is just a fan favorite, generally.
00:51Yes.
00:51Right?
00:52As a wide receiver.
00:53So, yeah, that was one of the ones that came to mind.
00:55Like, overall, though, the role player that I will always appreciate
00:58was Marwin Gonzalez.
01:00Like, that was the one that came to mind for me.
01:02Yes, that's a great one.
01:03Someone in the vein of, like, the Mauricio Dubon of currently, right?
01:06Just a dude who can step in anywhere and everywhere
01:08and give you admirable play.
01:10Dubon is on that list.
01:11Absolutely.
01:13Absolutely, right?
01:14Marwin Gonzalez is always going to be the one that I think about.
01:16Even tying up, tying the game up in the ninth and game two
01:21versus the Dodgers, right?
01:22Like, those are things that I will not forget.
01:25And, obviously, he had a number and number of circumstances like that.
01:28But, yeah, very much Marwin Gonzalez was the first one.
01:30I got a couple more, and then I'm curious what else is popping in y'all's minds
01:34because more than a role player, but for me, he always played a specific role.
01:40The one that just immediately popped into mind was Otis Thorpe.
01:44Interesting.
01:44He's more than a role player.
01:45Yeah, he's more than that.
01:46He's more than that.
01:47But, just, he had a particular role and just played, hell, you could say Clint Capella.
01:52You know?
01:53Yeah.
01:53Clint was real instrumental because as much as James Harden was a fantastic engine
01:59for an offense and really just one-on-one, you were going to be in hell
02:02trying to keep this really strong dude from getting downhill
02:05and using his dark arts against you.
02:09The notion of having that vertical element that he could throw that lob up to
02:13made it impossible to guard him.
02:15Yeah.
02:15Absolutely impossible to guard him.
02:17What about you guys?
02:19Yeah, the first one I thought about, and I don't want to really speak to his impact
02:24on the game and all that stuff, but just his presence as a role player,
02:28Gerald Green.
02:29That's the first person I thought about.
02:31Yeah.
02:31Yeah.
02:32Especially just being in this situation, being a Houston guy,
02:36playing for the Houston Rockets.
02:37It just seemed like when, in a good, not a disrespectful way, but every time I think about the 2010s type
02:46of Houston Rockets, I think the first thing I think about is Gerald Green.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Just being from Houston with the Braves and all, Gerald Green.
02:55I feel like when you get to Rockets ones, it's going to be championship era and dudes that had moments.
03:01So, Mario Ellie comes up.
03:03Vernon Maxwell.
03:05Mad Max is going to come up.
03:06They were kind of like Otis Thorpe, more than a role player, but definitely played a role.
03:10And then Robert Ori is another one that absolutely comes up as well.
03:13I was trying to think of, like, Texans ones specifically.
03:17I've got one.
03:18You've got one that came in.
03:19Somebody said Antonio Smith, and I thought that was a really good one.
03:24I'm actually thinking of modern day, because you mentioned Davis Mills.
03:26There's a couple of guys that showed up in this game in various ways that I think are starting to feel
03:31and starting to get their nose to this degree, which is Tommy Togiai.
03:35Oh, for sure.
03:37Like, he is specifically role player.
03:39He got his sack, man.
03:40Technically a half sack.
03:41However, he did show up, and that's what it's been, right?
03:46Look, still disrespect.
03:47It feels like he don't even play until the third quarter, but when he does, you immediately know,
03:51oh, Tommy Togiai's in the game, right?
03:52Runs are stuffed now, and things are changing on that offensive line.
03:56What did Tommy do to Reggie?
03:57What do you mean?
03:58I have no idea.
03:59Why are y'all paying me as the Tommy Togiai hater?
04:02I saw one sack.
04:03That's right.
04:04I'm reporting what actually happened so they don't get on here saying,
04:07in the loop, said he had a full sack.
04:09I've seen three sacks.
04:10I'd say one from Will, one from Daniil, and one from Tommy Togiai.
04:15All right, so here's one.
04:17And then I also wanted to mention, EJ Speed has been really good in that role.
04:21He's been so good.
04:21Right, just coming in and being a heat-seeking missile in moments.
04:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:27He's been really good for this defense.
04:28All-time Texans.
04:29If I told you there was a guy that played nine years in the total of 93 yards rushing,
04:37would you say he's memorable?
04:39No.
04:40Nine years, 93 yards rushing.
04:41Ten yards a year?
04:42Yeah, no, we're not saying that.
04:44What if he had 796 receiving yards, a million pancake blocks?
04:49His name was Vontae Leach.
04:50Yeah.
04:51I love that guy.
04:51Well, yeah.
04:52I love that guy.
04:53Set you up, man.
04:54I love that dude.
04:56Yeah, man.
04:56He was a bad dude.
04:58Is fullback like the position where you're most likely to just get a fan favorite?
05:04He could catch the ball, man.
05:05Yeah.
05:06He was just toasting fools out there.
05:08Without question.
05:10Let's see.
05:11There's a lot of names coming in in all sorts of different spaces.
05:15Case Keenum for being like a coach on the sideline for a number of times.
05:20And then also, he's a local legend at that point.
05:23Tony Eusebio.
05:24I'm with you.
05:25I'm with you on Tony.
05:27Chucky Brown.
05:29Yes.
05:29Chucky Brown was definitely a memorable role player.
05:32Actually, it feels like just a lot of the Texans backup quarterbacks,
05:36because they've been called into duty so much in the short history of this team.
05:39Like, I've seen some TJ Yates, which can't really deny you,
05:42because, like, again, he came in and won playoff games, right?
05:45Yeah.
05:45Like, that's absolutely filling your role.
05:48Moochie Norris, if for no other reason than the hair.
05:52The blowout.
05:53Right.
05:53The hair.
05:53The hair was beautiful there.
05:54No, but he actually had a very good game.
05:55Carl Herrera.
05:57Oh, yeah.
05:58Yeah, there we go.
05:58I feel like there's going to be a lot of rockets that pop up here.
06:01Oh, wow.
06:02All right.
06:02So, does this count, considering Seth Payne is the text that came in?
06:07I know Seth would not be upset with being described as a role player,
06:11but is that accurate?
06:12Is that an accurate way to describe that, man?
06:16I feel like that's not fair to him.
06:18Joel Driesen comes in.
06:20Bill Bates of the 90s Cowboys?
06:22Oh, he's the ultimate special teams guy.
06:25You know, yeah, he fits the category.
06:28Absolutely.
06:29Oh, Shane Battier.
06:30Shane Battier was like a super role player.
06:33Like, he was a defensive stopper.
06:34I feel like we can't.
06:35Making those charges, man.
06:36Scott, now, Scott Padgett.
06:37Yeah.
06:38I would like to know exactly what got you on the Scott Padgett train there,
06:408-3-2.
06:41But, Scott Padgett, there we go.
06:42We're a little bit closer to what we're talking about there.
06:45But, yeah, man, it's, I mean, Davis Mills, you have this written down here.
06:49Two starts, obviously 2-0, even though quarterback wins is not a stat.
06:53But 566 yards passing.
06:55According to you.
06:56Four touchdowns.
06:57Yeah, that's right.
06:57And I'm right.
06:58A single interception and then a couple of game-winning drives.
07:01Like, being able to step in in this place, this season could have been over.
07:06Over.
07:06If it wasn't for, I mean, you know, it deserves a little discussion here.
07:11And that is, you know, Nick Casario, by the way, joining Pain and Pendergast tomorrow?
07:16Tomorrow, 7.30.
07:177.30 a.m.
07:18Re-signing him right before the season.
07:21And you're kind of thinking, eh, you know, whatever.
07:24You signed him.
07:25And when you signed him, you know, we had the discussion on this show.
07:29You don't want him to get more than two or three wins for you.
07:31You know, you want him to come in and be able to give you two or three wins, you know, in a pinch.
07:36That's exactly what he did.
07:37That's exactly what he did.
07:38He didn't necessarily put the team on his back, but he made big plays at the end.
07:44You know, you talked about it.
07:45566-yard passing and two starts.
07:48You know, those 34 rushing yards, including the big touchdown, four TDs.
07:54And your offense hadn't been Sterling before, but you haven't really had a drop-off at all offensively, right?
08:01In fact, at times it feels like he might have a better command of the offense than what you had been doing prior.
08:07But, yeah, that is absolutely what you – that's your best case scenario for a backup quarterback to come in.
08:13And it would have been really bad if you had a backup quarterback come in and not be able to do this.
08:17And you have losses against the Jags and the Titans, right?
08:20Just getting the wins is important.
08:22Who you were playing against also mattered.
08:24And so shout-out to Davis Mills for holding this down.
08:26And we'll see if he might need to be called into duty once more.
