00:00USA gets a big win, man. That was a big win. First knockout round win since 2002.
00:07What were you doing in 2002?
00:10Well, if it was this, I was preparing to go to college for the first time.
00:16July 4th?
00:17Uh-huh. Preparing to go to college in August.
00:202002, T. What were you doing?
00:22That was my freshman year.
00:23I reckon I was in about seventh grade at Genshry Junior.
00:28Junior high-end, baby.
00:28Driving motorcycles, throwing black cats in them 60s at people.
00:32That's exactly it. I was on them dirt bikes tearing up the motorcycle.
00:35Yeah, you was probably pissing off Presley Cox and her sister and her mom and dad.
00:39I wrecked Carly, Presley's sister. I wrecked her dirt bike so bad one time.
00:44Bent the handlebars all the hell, and then I just rolled.
00:46Did you pay to fix it?
00:47Dude, it was a bad move, but I was a young, dumb kid.
00:50I just wheeled that dirt bike all bent up back into their garage, and I just ran home.
00:55Do they know who did it to this day?
00:56Oh, they knew within hours.
00:58I'm going to talk to Carly about that next time I see her.
01:00Presley's dad called me Pitt.
01:032002. 2002 is the last time that the – really, I think it's the only time, right?
01:08That was the second knockout round win for the USA in World Cup play,
01:14and it was 24 years, I guess, since the last win.
01:19So monster win.
01:19And arguably, I heard the in-the-loop guys, they had somebody on that was a World Cup analyst,
01:25and I didn't really get a confirmation, but they settled on absolutely one of the biggest,
01:32if not the biggest, World Cup victory in history for the USA.
01:38I enjoyed it.
01:40It didn't strike me as greatest victory or best victory of all time.
01:44I think that's more of the lack thereof of not having enough wins.
01:48So here we are.
01:50Here's what the win sounded like, though.
01:53We've got Folarin Baligan, striker, top striker for the USA team.
02:01He got us on the board first.
02:03It sounded a little bit like this.
02:23Hit him with the LeBron silencer afterwards, Ron.
02:26That was nice.
02:28It had an eventful day.
02:29I'm telling you, I'm not a big celebrator, as everybody knows.
02:33I like the LeBron silencer.
02:35He was so smooth with it, too, man.
02:37Yeah.
02:38I even like when LeBron does that one.
02:40I like when others do it.
02:43That's a quick, kind of under-the-radar, just what it is.
02:46It's a silencer.
02:47I didn't know that until a little earlier.
02:49I like it.
02:49I've always liked it.
02:50Didn't know what the name was.
02:51I like it even more now.
02:52I like to do it during beer pong sometimes.
02:57I bet you do.
02:59You should have done it that day.
03:00Maybe we were whooping the hell out of our wives over there at your place
03:02on that table, on that beer pong table, the table sheet.
03:08America goes up one zip on that, and then Tillman makes it two zip,
03:13and it sounded a little like this.
03:17Tillman!
03:18It's in!
03:20Malik Tillman!
03:22Two-nil, United States!
03:26Tillman delivers for the United States.
03:30Make the keeper work!
03:32And boy, does he!
03:34Intense focus, lines up for power, and just bangs it!
03:38Two-zero, United States!
03:42Lines up for power and just bangs it.
03:44I want to know what the goalie was doing there, boys.
03:47He was screened on.
03:49They had their setup on this side, and he was on the other side of the net.
03:56But I just, I'll be honest, I didn't know we had players that were capable of...
04:00He bent that thing in there, didn't he?
04:01...of doing that.
04:02I just didn't.
04:04Like, that's some stuff like the great, you know, the great teams.
04:09Hey, Le.
04:10The France and Argentina and Spain that have those type of guys that can do that, boy.
04:20That was some shot.
04:22Well, Tillman's coming.
04:23I still don't know what the goalie...
04:26Like, because here's the deal with me on that one, right?
04:28Why would you expose...
04:30And I know why the guys were lined up and shielding, but why would you expose the closest part of
04:34the net to the ball?
04:35The shortest path to him scoring a goal, you gave it to him.
04:39Glad you did.
04:40He bent that thing in there.
04:41It was a beautiful thing.
04:42Now, the controversial piece of all of this is the fact that we've lost Balligan, who is our C.J.
04:52Stratton, our Nico Collins.
04:53We had that conversation in the crosstalk.
04:55Bottom line is...
04:55Just to kind of give an understanding.
04:57I mean, he scored three goals, scored the most goals on seven shots in the tournament.
05:02He's our best player.
05:04He's our most impactful player.
05:05He's our...
05:06On the offensive end, he's our striker.
05:08He's the guy that it's tough to replace.
05:10Really, really tough to replace.
05:12We'll see...
05:12One or two.
05:13First or second.
05:14There you go.
05:14That's how important this guy is.
05:16But he gets tangled up, which they do all the time in soccer.
05:20And he gets tangled up and actually steps on the back of the opponent's leg.
05:28And there's no call on the field whatsoever.
05:31Not a yellow card.
05:32Not a red card.
05:33No nothing.
05:33They go to review, and it goes from no nothing to a red card, which in soccer I learned last
05:41night, which in soccer means an immediate ejection.
05:44So you've got to play without him the rest of the game, which obviously you're down your
05:49best player, but you're also down one player in your rotation.
05:53You typically have 11.
05:54Now they've got to finish the game with 10, I believe is how that works.
05:57And so that obviously puts a lot of strain on the guys around them.
06:00And then he's also out for the round of 16, which is we now know we're catching Belgium.
06:07Is that correct?
06:08Yep.
06:08We're catching Belgium in that round.
06:10So we've got to go and beat a team that's ranked higher than us.
06:13We've got to go beat a team in the round of 13 next Monday night, and we've got to do
06:18it without ultimately our best player, for sure, on the offensive end of the
06:23floor.
06:24Pitch.
06:25Damn, I had it, man.
06:25I was rolling so good, man.
06:27It's all right.
06:28But Ron, I've got some major issues with this.
06:30I'm going to be honest with you.
06:32I was starting to lean into soccer, and this has pissed me off.
06:36The first game that I said, all right, I'm going to get into, I'm going to lean into,
06:40and not just because the great jerseys, by the way, great uniforms, not just because they
06:50got the flag on their chest.
06:50That's a big part of the interest at all, but not just because of that.
06:54Now, you talked about it yesterday.
06:56I'm kind of leaning into the hype, right?
06:57I'm kind of feeling the hype.
06:59Bill, this is becoming a moment.
07:01Yes.
07:01Yes.
07:02And I want to be here for it.
07:04And I'm trying.
07:05And then, not only do our best players get a red card, and he's going to be out in the
07:12round of 16, but it's extremely controversial of how he's gone out, right?
07:18I think it was an awful call.
07:20The process that, like I said, it was a no-call in live action.
07:23They went back on video and didn't go to a yellow card.
07:25They went beyond that, went all the way to a red card, which was the ejection and missing
07:29the next game as well.
07:30I think it was an awful call.
07:32I think World Cup and FIFA, I think it's silly as hell to have a rule in place.
07:41Because, to your point, the refs got to be by the letter of the law.
07:44If they see something, and that's the rule, that's the rule, unfortunately.
07:47Right?
07:48The fact that World Cup, because once you get out of that round robin stuff and you get
07:51into this field of 38, 32, when you get into the round of 32 and the round of, I mean,
07:57these are AFC Championship, NFC Championship caliber games.
08:01These are damn near Super Bowl caliber games.
08:03And you're talking about a step on the ankle can end up a guy missing a game and a half
08:09worth of action.
08:10The crime does not fit the punishment.
08:11I understand if you've got somebody out there that's an enforcer and he's out there kicking
08:16folks in the chest or something.
08:18I totally get it, Ron.
08:19But this crime does not fit the punishment.
08:22If your rule in place puts a referee in a position where he can officiate a game and a
08:31happening like that and cost a guy a game and a half in such a big game, I think it's
08:38absolutely silly that that's even in place.
08:41That's even possible.
08:42Yeah, I think even if you don't, like there's some, some obviously huge soccer fans that
08:51this makes more sense to them.
08:53Yeah.
08:54I think Reggie, it made more sense to them.
08:56Well, he just accepts it.
08:57And now John, obviously a big soccer fan.
09:00He did not love it at all.
09:02But, um, but I mean, if you just, if you just, someone just put you in there and they said,
09:09all right, you watch that act.
09:11You saw, like you watched it slow mode, everything.
09:14All right.
09:15You watch that act.
09:17And then the penalty for that act is to lose the team, lose that player, the rest of that
09:25match and then also lose him the entirety of the next match, not a half, like in college
09:33football with targeting, but losing for the entirety of the match.
09:38Like, I just don't know anybody that look at that would say, yeah, that should, that should
09:44match that consequence.
09:46It just seems that obviously they, they, they have done it to this point.
09:51And they know it, but the importance of the game and what this and what that red card would
09:58have meant, I think you got to look over there and there has to be malice and intent.
10:04And that's what it says.
10:06What should come about for a red card.
10:09They, they have it in the rule book, violent conduct or serious foul play.
10:14And I, you know, that one you could see was not his intention.
10:19Now I can understand there's a penalty or a foul, even if it's not your intention.
10:23But it wasn't even a violent action.
10:24He stepped on you.
10:25It wasn't even a kick.
10:26I mean, I, I could see, I could head on, a stomp on an ankle and you could really injure
10:32somebody like that.
10:33But it was, it's clear.
10:35All right.
10:35There is a yellow card or some sort of a foul or consequence, but to think that it would
10:40rise to the level that it, that it is and the impact that it is.
10:45Is it just did.
10:47I mean, you watch that in, in, whether, you know, the game or not, it, it, it, it is
10:51weird to think that that would rise to the level of miss the rest of that game, play a
10:57man down, by the way, amazing for them to go over 30 minutes playing with a man down and
11:02scoring at the same time and then miss the, the, the other game that, that just doesn't
11:07seem to make sense.
11:08Well, look, the crime doesn't fit the punishment and all you got to do is listen to the people
11:11that cover soccer, that played soccer at this level.
11:14I mean, they're, they're, uh, I mean, they're beyond split on this deal.
11:17Most of them are, it's egregious, right?
11:20I mean, whether it's the ref or the rule, cause here's the other piece of this, right?
11:26Is they don't play Belgium until Monday night.
11:29The inability to review, like right now you got four, five, six days to the inability, I
11:35guess not four or five, six, you got four days, three days to the inability to review
11:41that play and say, okay, we're good with, with the fact that it was called.
11:46We're good with the fact that he missed the time, but that clearly was not a red card should
11:49not be a suspension.
11:51He's good to go.
11:52The inability in 2026 with all the review tactics, that the fact that you can't review
11:56it and get that right is, is silly as well.
11:59So they're not rescinding red cards like they do in the NBA.
12:02Yeah.
12:02Well, they should.
12:04I think it's much more like college football, right?
12:05I don't think I've ever seen a target, a targeting change.
12:11They are supposed to objectively review the targeting call before they make that call
12:15official.
12:16Yeah.
12:16I think if they go to review like college football target, I don't think like, you know,
12:22the commissioner of the SEC can then go in and watch it and change it.
12:25All I'm saying is in world cup play round of 32 round to 16, anywhere beyond a knockout
12:32play, you, you, this kind of thing should be reviewed.
12:35I mean, if that, if, if the, if the foul, if that foul is going to be interpreted by one
12:41individual as a, as a one and a half game suspension, ultimately, then that should be
12:47reviewable in, in games that are this big.
12:49I mean, that just, that that's just silly to not do it.
12:53But the, the, the Americans USA team, USA goes on and wins to zip.
12:57Uh, we, we do play Belgium next, who is ranked higher than us.
13:01And, um, even though we are favored to win that, win that game, by the way, Tyler, Belgium,
13:06people in Belgium, Belgians, right.
13:08Just switch a couple of letters right there.
13:10The Belgians, by the way, I'm so cultured, I'll go a step further.
13:16Um, they're referred to as Flemings on the North side.
13:19That's the, the North side of, of, uh, of Belgium apparently is Dutch speaking, um, closer
13:26to Holland, closer to Holland, I guess.
13:28Isn't that weird?
13:29Yeah.
13:30And then the South regions, uh, the French speaking region is, uh, the Walloons.
13:36Oh, the Walloons.
13:37Yeah.
13:37Of course.
13:38Everybody.
13:38So Belgians, Flemings, or Walloons, whatever you consider yourself, you're going to get
13:43a good old fashioned American ass whooping on Monday night.
13:49And this is, we'll put a boot in your ass.
13:51Yeah.
13:52I hope so.
13:52Cause then this, cause this is, it feels like we're on a special ride right now.
13:57Feels like we're on a special ride.
13:59There we go.
13:59I'm enjoying it, man.
14:00I am.
14:01It's awesome.
14:02I gotta get somewhere to watch it.
14:03Highly, we can talk about this in the next segment or maybe later on.
14:06Highly disappointed with the, the, the song choice at the end.
14:11Yeah.
14:11Pretty lame.
14:12They could do a lot better.
14:13Not, not a fan of John Denver.
14:15No, no, no.
14:16It's a great song, but it can be much better.
14:18I think there's a lot of songs out there you could pick that, that, that don't talk.
14:22I mean, of all places.
14:25It should be Toby Keith.
14:26We'll put a boot in your ass.
14:28It's the American way.
14:30That would be a good one.
14:31I don't know how many, I don't know how many people in those stands would know that word
14:34for word, but I agree with you.
14:36We teach them.
14:36That'd be awesome.
14:37R.I.P.
14:38Toby.
14:38I was thinking T.I., you don't know me, but in a different direction.
14:42T.I.
14:42is fun.
14:43I was waiting for him to shift gears and genres.
14:45I was.
14:45I mean, they can't put that damn country roads that went on and on.
14:48I was like, golly, can we switch genres here or something?
14:50It might have been Sweet Caroline.
14:51All right.
14:52Coming.
