00:00The figures released by the Met come as the latest crime figures for England and Wales
00:08also show a fall in the number of homicides to their lowest level
00:13since current methods of reporting began in 2003.
00:17Some 518 homicides were recorded by police to the year of June 2025.
00:24According to the Office of National Statistics, a drop of 6% from the 552 in the previous year
00:31and 27% below pre-pandemic levels.
00:35Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said that while every murder is a tragedy,
00:41fewer families have been shattered by violence in the capital.
00:46The leaders of the London Conservatives, Susan Hall, praised the force
00:50but said more needed to be done to tackle other crimes, including violence against women and girls.
01:00London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan recently spoke about the reduction in certain crimes across London.
01:07Here's what he said towards the end of last year.
01:10Our funding so far has helped to create more than half a million positive opportunities
01:17to divert vulnerable young Londoners away from criminal gangs and crime
01:21and towards training and employment.
01:24The good news is that we know our approach is working.
01:30Despite our population rising by more than a million
01:33and austerity from the previous government, since 2016,
01:38violence with injury is down by 14%.
01:41Homicide is down by 22%.
01:44Burglary is down by 29%.
01:47A reduction of nearly 20,000 offences.
01:50Gun crime with a lethal barrel discharge is down by nearly 50%.
01:56And compared to last year, knife crime is down by 18%.
02:00Personal robbery is down by 13%.
02:03And theft from the person is down by 16%.
02:06In addition, the number of murders in the capital in the first nine months of this year
02:11was the lowest since monthly records began and represents a fall of 58%.
02:17The Commissioner also praised prevention work,
02:21including London's Violence Reduction Unit,
02:25which is an external unit created by Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan in 2019.
02:31Sir Mark said it had played an important part in turning around the lives of teenagers
02:36targeted by drug dealers in London.
02:40The VRU delivers targeted interventions aimed at preventing young people
02:45being drawn into gangs and violence,
02:47including placing youth workers in police custody and hospitals
02:52and tackling store exclusions as well.
