00:00In the eastern city of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a new art exhibition is uniting French artist Camille Blanc-Valentain with a group of young local creatives.
00:12Together, their works address pressing themes, climate change, pollution and broader environmental concerns in a region already deeply affected by ongoing conflict.
00:21Inspired by the very specific context of Goma, but also something very universal which shows how deeply connected we all are, all dependent on rare arts, minerals, oil but also food energy like sugar and bananas.
00:36Titled in Swahili, Chini, Arde, meaning underground in French, the exhibition presents works carrying powerful messages.
00:46Paintings and sculptures illustrate Goma's environmental realities, the presence of the volcano but also a tense security climate that weighs on daily life.
00:55These candles are really a prayer that I dedicate to Mama Bidule, whom I met for the first time when I came to Congo a few months ago.
01:10She told me she had to stay inside her home during the M23 attacks without water or electricity.
01:16The goal is to show how climate challenges add to the security issues experienced by the people here.
01:26For artists in Goma, this collaboration is an opportunity to share through art a reality that is part of their daily lives.
01:34The artist here, he is the mirror of his city.
01:39He is a messenger.
01:40So for us, this is a moment to convey our messages, and we must convey them through our pieces, our paintings, our artworks.
01:49Once again, I think these messages of hope here must draw attention, must remind the international community that there is life, there is hope, there is initiative.
01:59It should be able to encourage this kind of initiative.
02:02By raising awareness of both environmental, press, and security concerns, the exhibition calls for greater international consciousness and engagement,
02:11the work of these artists turns as a testament to the resilience of Goma's community and highlights the urgent need for actions in Eastern Dieracy.
