00:00The French President Emmanuel Macron opened the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice on Monday,
00:07calling for urgent action to protect the oceans.
00:11He urged war leaders to resist the force of inertia and follow through on their environmental commitments.
00:18He also warned against using economic development as an excuse for pursuing dangerous deep-sea mining projects.
00:24Through a plan for the protection of ocean flows and a very precise map will be presented at this conference,
00:31we will now classify the most sensitive ecosystems such as seagrass, bears and canyons as highly protected.
00:37Human activities will therefore be regulated and some will be prohibited.
00:42Fishing techniques like bottom trawling as well as all mining activities will be restricted in the zones
00:47which have been mapped out based on scientific data in consultation with our fishermen.
00:52The zones will be designated, allowing us more than double the level of our strong protection within our exclusive economic zones.
01:01The conference seeks to address climate funding, plastic pollution and deep-sea mining
01:07with outcomes to be presented at the United Nations in New York this July.
01:12The U.S. is not attending the summit in Nice following the Trump administration's effective withdrawal
01:17from all climate-related agreements.
