00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Friday afternoon.
00:34It comes to you in 15 different slices of letters and numbers
00:38and two new contestants.
00:40We will see who rises to the top.
00:43Hello, Rachel Riley.
00:44Hello, Colin Murray.
00:45Now, all this week has been Real Bread Week.
00:48It's about encouraging people to bake their own bread
00:51without preservatives or additives
00:53or just buy bread without preservatives and additives.
00:57I'm guessing, as a young mother,
00:58not much time to bake much bread.
01:01No, but we have made bagels.
01:03We made bagels once.
01:04Yes.
01:05And they went down very well.
01:06They all got eaten within about 10 minutes.
01:08I always say, let bagels be bagels.
01:10I've always said that.
01:11Or bagels, if you prefer.
01:13Not in my house.
01:14Well, listen, let's head over to Dixonry Corner
01:16and a part of the studio that never goes stale.
01:19It's our G of the D, Susie Dent,
01:21making sure everything stays above board once again.
01:24And beside her, for the last time this week,
01:27on her debut, and a magnificent debut, by the way,
01:30at business tycoon and dragon and TV star, Sarah Davies.
01:36I like that.
01:38Great, eh?
01:39Well, listen, today's going to be a hoot.
01:40Because you'll remember yesterday, Sarah,
01:42we had Michael Calder become our fourth octal champ
01:44of the series.
01:45And that means we always get to meet
01:46two new Countdown friends today.
01:49Both nurses.
01:50So let's first introduce, from Burnley,
01:53it is Nicky Needham.
01:54Hi, Nicky.
01:55Hello.
01:56Now, you were a kissagram
01:57and now you're a mental health nurse.
02:00That's right.
02:00Quite a career change.
02:01Tell me a little bit about the job.
02:03I work for a home treatment team.
02:05So it's for people who are in crisis.
02:08We go to the house usually.
02:10They only stay on our caseload for a short time.
02:13But there but for the grace of God go I.
02:15I mean, everybody's got a different story to tell.
02:18Everybody's unique, aren't they?
02:19So it never gets boring.
02:21I love it.
02:22I think that's brilliant, Nicky.
02:23Great job.
02:24Good luck to you today.
02:25You're up against Melanie Clapham,
02:27who lives near Whitehaven.
02:30And, Melanie, you're different types of nurses.
02:32But one of the things is you're a digital nurse.
02:34Does that mean you're a robot?
02:37I often get asked what digital nursing's about.
02:40So a lot of the patient records
02:44are going across to digital means now.
02:45So we're getting electronic patient records
02:48and things like that.
02:49Brilliant.
02:49And then you're a registered nurse,
02:51all sorts of stuff,
02:52which is absolutely fantastic.
02:53So listen, hope both of you have the best of days.
02:56Let's hope it's a close one.
02:57Melanie and Nicky.

07:05You're choosing.
07:06Um, one large, please.
07:09Um, back small.

08:21One way to get there.
08:22So many ways. Melanie?
08:23Started the same with a seven minus three equals four times by 50 to get 200.

10:39Eight points each.
10:4032.24.
10:42With anticipation, we head to dictionary corner.
10:45We managed an eight as well, but it was a different one.

12:10M-I-L-L-E-T-S.
12:11Millets.
12:12A lot to talk about there, Suze.
12:14Yes, unfortunately, there's only one S for slime,
12:17so we can't have slimes.
12:18And millet is very clearly listed in the dictionary as a mass noun,
12:22so I can't accept the S.
12:23I'm so sorry.
12:24There you go.
12:25Yeah.
12:26There you go.
12:26What did we have, then?
12:27Uh, well, we managed a seven.
12:29So we had mollies.
12:32What's a molly?
12:33Mollies, yeah.
12:33They're really brightly coloured killifish and are popular in aquaria.
12:37Mollies.
12:38Very nice, Suze.
12:39Thank you very much.
12:39Let's switch back to the numbers.
12:41Melanie, your first time deciding your own fate.
12:43I'll try six more.
12:45Yes.
12:45Six more.
12:46Change from one large that we've heard lately.
12:49And hopefully a challenge, something to wake our brains up.
12:53The little ones.
12:54Two, ten, two, eight, seven, and one.
12:59And the target to reach, oh, 987.
13:03Nine, eight, seven.
13:05Good luck.
13:05Woo!
13:06Good luck.
13:07Bye-bye.
13:21Bye-bye.
13:24Bye-bye.
13:27Bye-bye.
13:29Bye-bye.
13:32Big target with small numbers.
13:38The ten might help. Melanie?
13:40No, I haven't made it, no.
13:42No? There you go, crashed and burned, Nicky.
13:44No, Annie, no.
13:45There you go.
13:46All right.
13:46Excellent. Right, off you go then, Rich.
13:48Do you remember your New Year's resolution?
13:50It's a seven. It's all about the sevens.
13:52I got it because I didn't. I was three away, but I know what you mean.
13:55Seven times table.
13:56Eight times two is 16.
13:59Take away the second two is 14.
14:0114 times by ten is 140.
14:04140 plus one, 141.
14:07And, of course, from your New Year's resolution, you know,
14:09141 times seven, 983.
14:12Seventh heaven. Well done.
14:16Nice. There you go. Well done indeed.
14:18The scores stay the same, though, here, between Nicky and Melanie,
14:21both looking to take the teapot home on this Friday afternoon.
14:24Last time, talking with Sarah, here's my worry, right?
14:28Oh.
14:28Because you're already, like, really successful.
14:31And you don't need the money.
14:33That's not why you're on Countdown.
14:34And then you've got your new series starting, right?
14:38You had your book at Christmas.
14:40Now I want to come back on here.
14:42I want to make sure you come back.
14:43I came for the crack, mate.
14:45Yes.
14:45And I've had tremendous crack all week.
14:48Absolutely.
14:48I'll absolutely come back.
14:49Good, isn't it?
14:50Yeah.
14:50It's good, isn't it?
14:51Tell me about this, because we talk back to craft again,
14:54which was the very origin of your first business.
14:57Your book was called Crafting Your Year.
14:59I thought it was about scheduling properly, but it's not, is it?
15:02No, it's not.
15:03Right.
15:03It's about crafting.
15:04I mean, I've crafted my whole life.
15:06It's, you know, it's what I built the business on.
15:08But I kind of fell in love with the industry.
15:11When I was still at university, I stumbled upon the industry.
15:15And what I fell in love with was the people who did craft.
15:18People who craft.
15:19It's not just a hobby.
15:20It's a passion.
15:21And they are so, they're so wonderful, the communities around there.
15:25And especially during the pandemic, I saw how it really helped get so many people through.
15:29And, you know, just the mindfulness and the well-being.
15:32And, of course, now it's one of the hottest buzzwords around.
15:35But for a lot of people, they just, they're frightened and don't know where to start.
15:38What's the first thing you would recommend, then, is the beginner's crafting?
15:42So, if you want to just get started, I always say card-making's brilliant.
15:46Yes.
15:46Because you can sit down and in 10, 15 minutes have made something you're proud of.
15:50Yeah.
15:50Brilliant place to start.
15:51Wonderful for anyone.
15:52I like that.
15:53Sarah, thank you so, so much.

18:57Have you got that as well?
18:58Let's have a look at your botty.
18:59Yeah.
19:02OK, B-O-T-T-I-E.
19:05Kind of like a childlike word for the bottom.
19:08Yes, and unfortunately, although it's I-E-S in the plural,
19:11it is a Y in the singular.
19:13So, really bad luck because it's completely plausible.
19:16So, you're both falling in your botty with that zero points each.
19:19Dixie recorder.
19:20Now, I didn't think we'd be allowed this one because it'd be a capital B,
19:24but apparently, Susie's checked, big feet.
19:27Yes, in the sense of well-known or prominent, particularly journalists,
19:32but individuals, oh, the big feet around here.
19:34All right, 38 players, 30.
19:37The scores stay exactly where they are.
19:40Let's do the numbers.
19:41Nicky.
19:42I'll try two big ones, please, and four little.
19:45Thank you, Nicky.
19:46Too large.
19:47Four small clothes contests today.
19:50And this number's round for you.
19:52Ten, five, six, one.
19:55And the large one's 25 and 50.
19:58And the target to reach 912.
20:01912.
20:02Numbers up.
20:279-1-2 is the target.
20:35Nicky.
20:36Nowhere near.
20:37Sorry.
20:38Declaring nowhere near at Melanie.
20:41No, unfortunately, I've not made it.
20:43OK.
20:44Well, listen, I was triumphant because I was three away
20:47and Riley was showboken after about ten seconds.
20:51Off you go.
20:52Yes, I found one route to it.
20:54If you say 50 plus 25, 75 plus 1, 76.
20:59And then ten divided by five is two times six is 12,
21:04and 12 times 76 is 912.
21:07APPLAUSE
21:08We're in top form this week.
21:11Top form.
21:12Nothing's got past you at all.
21:139-1-2.
21:14All right, let's do our second Tea Time teaser of the day,
21:17our last of the week, and it is teaser high.
21:21Teaser high.
21:22Russell's old friends were sailors.
21:24Russell's old friends were sailors.
21:35APPLAUSE
21:35Hello again.
21:43Russell's old friends were sailors.
21:44A reference to the late, great Russell Harty.
21:48Hartys was the answer.
21:49Now, we should say, because it's very, very important,
21:52that would even be before your time in Countdown,
21:54but I remember Russell Harty in the very early days
21:57of Countdown in Dictionary Corner.
21:59Absolutely.
21:59I think he was a good friend of Richard's,
22:01Richard Whiteley's, actually.
22:02Yeah.
22:02So I never met him, sadly.
22:04Right, 38 plus 30.
22:05You two have stalled a bit, haven't you,
22:07the last couple of rounds?
22:08So let's get back into gear.

23:39Ah. I've got plenty of others.
23:41Ah, it's such a shame, isn't it? There you go. Pushes it out to 14 points.
23:45What have my hardy souls in Dictionary Corner got?
23:48We've only got sixes. Yeah. So we've got hardly and shroud.

25:09Eight.
25:09An eight as well.
25:10What do you get, Nicky?
25:12Strained.
25:13Strained, OK.
25:14And Melanie?
25:15Restrained.
25:16And restrained.
25:17Very good.
25:19How'd you get on Dexterity Corner?
25:21We pulled up some eights as well.
25:22Yes.
25:23Couldn't get more than an eight, though.
25:24We had trainers.
25:26Trainers.
25:27Equally as good.
25:28That'll pick you up eight points.
25:30It's plentiful round that as we pause the game for now.
25:33Still up for grabs, just 14 points between the two of you
25:36as we get our origins of words for today.
25:39Yes, well, the team has had an email from Chiara.
25:43Beautiful name meaning beloved or dear.
25:46And she says,
25:47I was having a conversation with the in-laws
25:48and we were wondering where the phrase
25:50take it with a pinch of salt comes from.
25:53And it all goes back to a Roman statesman and scholar
25:57who was called Pliny the Elder.
25:59And he wrote a sort of blockbuster natural history.
26:03He actually died whilst watching the eruption of Vesuvius.
26:07So, quite a life.
26:09But in his natural history, he recounts a tale
26:13which was about a discovery, a startling discovery,
26:16made by a Roman general called Pompey.
26:19And essentially, after conquering an enemy country of Pontos
26:24and searching the royal palace of a king called Mithridates VI,
26:29Pompey discovered that the king had achieved immunity to poison.
26:34So, what he would do is he would intermittently fast
26:36and then he would take a tiny, tiny bit of poison,
26:39add it to his food.
26:41And it tasted absolutely horrible,
26:43even though the amount of poison was tiny.
26:45So, he added a tiny bit of salt to make it go down.
26:49And Pliny records this story in his natural history
26:52and he records it with the words in Latin,
26:54cum grano salis, with a grain of salt.
26:57Now, there's been numerous interpretations of this afterwards.
27:01Other people thought that he was saying,
27:03this story is completely made up.
27:04So, take this with a pinch of salt.
27:07You know, it doesn't really matter whether the story was true or not.
27:10What matters is that cum grano salis, with a grain of salt,
27:13entered the English language to mean to take something
27:16in order to make it more palatable.
27:18In other words, I will resist taking something at face value
27:22and I need something to make it a little bit more palatable.
27:25But the idea is it all goes back to this very strange story,
27:29possibly true, that someone would take teeny, teeny bits of poison,
27:32that tiny bit of salt would help you digest the tale.
27:35There you go. Sinister.
27:36Thank you very much.
27:40Lovely story for a Friday afternoon
27:43and just four rounds left of this week
27:45and we don't know who's going to be joining us back here
27:47in the Champions Chair on Monday yet.

29:22Susie, bit of work? Not in, but I'm with Melanie.
29:26I was looking up all sorts of variations on the same theme,
29:28but auntie was the only one that was in.
29:30OK, so auntie counts, wafty does.
29:32Yes. All right.
29:34A wafty auntie does not count as well.
29:36All right, Sarah, anything better?
29:40Auntie was as good as it got for us.
29:42There you go. I would have liked the wafty, though.
29:43That's a good word.

31:26You two.
31:26No. I mean, we tried.
31:28We did get from boating to boasting, though, so...
31:31Yeah. Right. 66, 38.
31:34Melanie, let's do the numbers once more.
31:36So, might as well go for six small numbers.
31:38Yeah, let's go for six little, exactly, just before the weekend.
31:42Six little numbers coming up, and they are seven, ten, eight, one, nine,
31:51and nine.
31:52This could be tricky.
31:53The target, 468.

32:19You can report the numbers sooner.
32:22Right.
32:23OK, but first, there we go.
32:24But let's be there when, really, really what happened.
32:25If you don't have any questions for the numbers.
32:26Four, six, eight is the target. Melanie?
32:31I have four, six, nine, I think.
32:33One away. Good effort, Nicky.
32:35I think I've got four, six, nine as well.
32:37Right, Melanie, how did you get there?
32:39So, seven times eight.
32:41Seven times eight, 56.
32:44Minus nine. 47.
