00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio and the Champion of Champions Grand Final.
00:38We've seen some amazing matches over the last three weeks, all played to an extraordinarily high standard.
00:46But one by one, these champions have been knocked out until eventually, today, we're left with just two.
00:54One of whom will emerge from this studio later on this afternoon as the Champion of Champions.
01:01And so we'll join an elite group of Champion of Champions champions.
01:06And here is the little trophy, priceless piece of kryptonite mixed with diamonds and all the rest of it that
01:13they will take home with me.
01:15Priceless, I can't tell you.
01:16But it's been a wonderful few weeks and the people that really stand out in my mind, many, many young
01:22people, but not all.
01:23As young as our two contestants today, people like Giles, he's a young chap.
01:28Antoinette from Nina in County Tipperary.
01:31Samir, originally from Bosnia, who has the most extraordinary vocabulary.
01:37And, of course, Jen, who lost in the semis, a charming, fun girl with the bow.
01:44Absolutely. I'm going to add George to the list as well because his numbers are amazing.
01:48I have everyone. He gets my vote for his number skills.
01:51It's been a real pleasure to watch them.
01:54A real pleasure. And I think Salford's Bars have really enjoyed having our contestants back as well.
01:58And our production team who have made full use of them while they've been back for the Champion of Champions.
02:02Indeed. Now, who have we got?
02:04We've got Dylan, who's proved his worth time and time again, having won two very, very close rounds.
02:10In our semis, you beat Giles Hutchings and proved you had a quick, quick finger than him on that final
02:16conundrum.
02:17My word. How much do you want to win this title today?
02:21Words can't describe it.
02:22All right. Because, of course, you have...
02:24I think you have the highest score ever as an Octa champ. Am I right?
02:27So far.
02:28Remind me what it was.
02:30A 9-7-4.
02:31A 9-7-4. Imagine you're joined today by Cool Dan McComb.
02:36And Cool Dan played in our semifinals yesterday, beating Jen Stedman.
02:42Always there, the blonde Jen Stedman with something in her hair.
02:45She never actually wore her tiara, which I saw her wearing in the audience once or twice.
02:50There we are.
02:51Are the gloves off today, Dan?
02:53Will we be seeing you a little bit hot under the collar?
02:55No, I'm just really... I didn't expect to make it to the final, so I'm just going to enjoy it.
02:59I hope you'll both enjoy it.
03:01And I hope you'll both enjoy this round of rapturous applause.
03:09And over in the corner, of course, Susie once again joined.
03:12And, you know, for the last time until we can persuade her to come back,
03:15the wonderful Naga Manchetti from the BBC News Studio.
03:19Welcome back.
03:19Thank you. I loved it this week. Absolutely. Really enjoyed it.
03:23Well, you've been a very, very good player, too, as well.

06:35And who will our eulogist be today?
06:37All right.
06:38That's excellent.
06:38It goes back to the Latin elogium, which was an inscription on a tomb.

14:04your handicap is is dropping and also you ran the marathon just to prove that you
14:09could and you hated it I never do it again but sometimes that winning mentality can get
14:15the better of you yeah it's an ugly trait sometimes it's an ugly trait but um it
14:21reminds me of when Bill Turnbull you're familiar with here on dictionary corner
14:25and I were presenting and we were interviewing this wonderfully accomplished
14:31seven-year-old who had just beaten a 14-year-old at table tennis so when we
14:37were we'd set up in the studio a table tennis table and ready to play him and we
14:42were going to interview him twice and Bill it was Bill's fault this Bill in the
14:46morning said come on we've got to play we've got to give him a proper game so I
14:50said okay fine so in if every time we went to the regional news you get three
14:54minute break
14:55so we practiced we'd get up we'd unplug our microphones and practice and in the
14:59first hour Bill played him and they had an honorable draw
15:03well I like table tennis and in the second hour I played him and wouldn't give
15:10in and his parents were standing at the side going let him win one point and I was
15:14like no children need to learn to win and I did win but the problem was when I
15:23won I then decided to stand up with my hands lost in the air and prance around
15:27the table and then just realized what an awful person I must have seemed and many
15:32of the viewers did let me know that it wasn't very um charitable to do so I tried
15:36to do say let's do it again and have another one but by this time the kid had had
15:40enough of me and just walked away did you make him cry no I don't think and I'm
15:47sure he's got a brilliant career ahead and he will come back and absolutely
15:49annihilate me but very good I love this story

21:29If you spot this mineral, you might call it a triumph.
21:32And the answer is dolomite.
21:55You might remember the triumph dolomite, quite a nice little car, when there was a triumph motor car company.
22:01Yeah, translucent mineral, containing calcium and magnesium, usually iron as well, and named after Monsieur Dolomieux, who was the French
22:10geologist who found it.
22:11Really?
22:12Yes.
22:12Did he also give his name to the Italian mountain range of the same name?

25:14no better than that we've got a six months but that's as good as we could do
25:19pretty good all right well done 79 playing 72 still that seven point gap as
25:26we turn to Susie and her origins of words and today Susie today I am just going to
25:34ponder I suppose on the vocabulary of the champions because it's been a long
25:38campaign getting to the be a champion of champions I know everybody has worked
25:43incredibly hard and the word campaign and that itself sums up that idea of combat
25:49it goes back to the Roman words campus meaning the open countryside and the
25:55connection if you like with combat was because armies tended to spend the winter
26:00in fortresses and in the walled cities etc and then in the summer they would take
26:04the field to carry out their military maneuvers and so campaign took on this
26:10idea of a military campaign and the person who emerged the victor from some of
26:14these military campaigns these maneuvers was of course the champion and that too
26:19is related to the idea of the campus the campus marshes of course was the
26:22famous one in Rome where the armies faked battles very often many got
26:28slaughtered in in the process of sleep that's not going to happen here
26:31hopefully and the champion of course another synonym for a champion is a
26:37conqueror and I like the word conqueror because in there the query of Latin is
26:42seeking and striving and it's linked to question and it's linked to quest as well
26:47which of course very appropriate and they are also contending and there was a
26:52link between contending and being on tenterhooks because tender a is in
26:57there again another Latin word which means to stretch or strive because on
27:01tenterhooks is to be stretched in suspense and I'll finish with prize because of
27:06course today the ultimate prize of being the champion of champions that comes from
27:10a Latin word that actually developed into three separate English words one was
27:14prize itself one was price but the other was praise and it's linked to other
27:19words like precious and appreciate and of course appreciation is think what we all
27:23do because these people are so talented and one that anyone can emerge champion
27:28obviously but we do very much appreciate your skills
