00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Thursday afternoon.
00:35We're back in business for another 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
00:39And outside of the game, of course, we've been enjoying having Sarah Davies in Dictionary Corner for the first time.
00:44Rachel Riley Business, Tycoon, Dragon's Den, all sorts of stuff.
00:49When it comes to a good business, what do you need?
00:51I mean, you need a product. You need a good place.
00:54So, you know, the right promotion, the right price, the P's, the P's.
00:59But the name, the name is really important.
01:01So, we haven't had a quiz in a while, so here we go.
01:04Here we go.
01:05So, I'm going to give you a name of a company and you have to say whether I made it up.
01:08Okay.
01:09Or whether it actually exists.
01:10All right.
01:10A garden design company in England called Floral and Hardy.
01:16That's got to be real.
01:17It is real.
01:18Brilliant.
01:18It's brilliant, isn't it?
01:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:20Okay.
01:20Would anyone ever call a fish and chip shop this?
01:23It's terrible.
01:25Frying Nemo.
01:26Oh, probably.
01:29I thought you were going to go for the Codfather.
01:30Frying Nemo, I think, probably.
01:32They're everywhere.
01:32Oh.
01:33You heartless people.
01:34That's terrible.
01:35Yorkshire.
01:36Southampton.
01:37Oh, no.
01:37Loads of them.
01:38What little kids traumatised around the country.
01:40Right.
01:41Well, we're fully invested, aren't we, in our Dictionary Corner this week.
01:43So, let's introduce them properly.
01:45Our G of the D, Susie Dent.
01:47And we are buying what she's selling, our dragon, Sarah Davies.
01:54Well, we are on the cusp of our fourth octo-champ of this season, 89, already.
01:59I mean, we've got to play regular games until halfway through June.
02:04And, you know, it's been a long time since there's been eight octo-champs at the end of the series.
02:09But we could be up to four already.
02:11Michael, you would be our fourth.
02:12How are you feeling this afternoon?
02:14Feeling good, yeah.
02:15Just happy to be here.
02:17Whatever happens, happens.
02:18It's that temperament, I think, that saw you in good stead because you've met some really good challengers.
02:23And I'm sure it's going to be another one today.
02:25Julia Blake joins us.
02:27Originally from Plymouth, now in Clitor Moor.
02:30And you are a great listener.
02:31Tell me all about the 16 years you've been volunteering for the Samaritans.
02:35I have, yeah.
02:36Yeah.
02:36I find it very rewarding.
02:37Get a lot out of it.
02:39So, yeah.
02:39Anybody who does charity work regularly always says the same thing.
02:44They always say, no, no, no, no.
02:45I get as much out of it.
02:47It's true.
02:47Is that the case with that?
02:48Definitely.
02:48Without a doubt.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Absolutely.
02:51Brilliant.
02:52Right.
02:52We're all ears to see what you do today.
02:54We will see.
02:54Julia and Michael, best of luck.
02:59Michael.
03:01Octo-champ, immortality awaits.
03:03Let's get underway.

04:52You can, indeed.

05:53All right, then, Julia?
05:55Seven. Yeah, Michael.
05:57Seven. Come on.
05:59If you had a fiver, you'd bet it all that was the same word.
06:01Julia? Pointed.
06:03Michael? Pointed as well. Pointed.
06:05I'm guessing, Sara, you've pointed written down as well.
06:08We do have pointed.
06:10Anything else? Yes.
06:12Yes, I think we might have an eight.
06:15Idiotype.
06:17I-D-I-O-T-Y-P-E.
06:19And this is the set, the sum total of all the genes
06:22that determine who we are and what we are.
06:25So it's genetic determinants.
06:28Given the idiot at the start of that,
06:30this idiot thought it meant something else, yes.
06:32Idiotype. Idiotype, thank you.
06:3513 points each. First numbers round of the day, Mr Calder.
06:40One large, five small, please.
06:42One from the top.
06:44And five little coming up.
06:46First one of the day, your favourite choice.
06:48And they are seven, seven, eight, two, two, and one hundred.
06:55And the target, 291.
06:58291. Numbers up.
07:00First one of the things that we all know is going to happen.
07:03akan keller.
07:04Another iteming the妙ing crossover.
07:05Is that
07:282-9-1 the target, Michael.
07:322-9-2.
07:33One away. Julia?
07:34I think I've gone wrong.
07:36Oh, seven points, though, so the damage is limited a bit here.
07:40Michael, off you go.
07:417 over 7.
07:427 over 7, 1.
07:44Add 2.
07:453.
07:46Times 100.
07:47300.
07:48Minus the 8.
07:49That gets you to one away.
07:51Yep.
07:52And to get the 2-9-1.
07:54A couple of ways jumped out.
07:55One of them.
07:56100 times 2.
07:58200.
07:59And then 8 plus 7 minus 2 is 13.
08:0313 times the second 7 gives you 91.
08:05Yeah.
08:06Add them to 2-9-1.
08:07Neat.
08:10For 10 points, have you got that at home?
08:12And just for fun now, our tea time teaser.
08:15Kite wars.
08:16Kite wars.
08:17Hundreds of feet, but just one toe.
08:19Hundreds of feet, but just one toe.
08:22AT 3.
08:37Welcome back.
08:38Hundreds of feet, but just one toe.
08:40Clever clue.
08:40Water ski was her first tea time teaser.
08:44Juliet with her head above water for sure.
08:46Just 7 points behind in your letters.
08:47Could I start with a consonant, please?
08:49Thank you, Julia.
08:50S.
08:51And another.
08:53D.
08:54And another.
08:56G.
08:58And a vowel, please.
09:00E.
09:01And another.
09:03U.

09:15And another vowel, please.
09:17And lastly, E.

09:26…
09:27That's time up. Julia?
09:53Just a six.
09:54Six there. And Michael?
09:55Seven.
09:56And the seven. Julia, the six.
09:58Gushed.
09:59Gushed. And Michael?
10:01Guest.
10:02Of course. Guest. Very nice of you.
10:05Oh, my goodness me.
10:06Seven points for you. Well done if you got that at home.
10:09What can we add, Susie and Sarah?
10:11Well, we couldn't beat a seven.
10:13But we did get a different seven. We had gussied.
10:17Gussied.
10:17Yes.
10:18To gussy something in North American English is to make it more attractive.
10:22So it's a bit like zhuzhing.
10:23Zhuzh up something, you gussy it up.
10:25To gussy it up. There you go.
10:27More letters now. Michael?
10:28May I have a consonant, please?
10:29Thank you, Michael.
10:31B
10:31And another.
10:33N
10:35And another.
10:39D
10:40And a vowel.
10:43O
10:43And another.
10:45A

10:55Another consonant.
10:58K
10:59And a final vowel, please.
11:04Final I.
11:06And half a minute.
11:07Is a vowel.
11:18One.
11:20One.
11:20One.
11:28On.
11:31One.
11:31One.
11:32Michael?
11:39Six. Yes, and Julia?
11:41Five. Five, the five is?
11:43Brand. Brand.
11:45And Michael? Enroad.
11:47Enroad.
11:48Yeah, absolutely fine, just checking it's only singular, it is.
11:52Yeah. What else do we have?
11:54We've got a seven.
11:55Yeah.
11:56On board.
11:57How's that not hyphenated?
12:00Well, it is in some senses, and it's actually two words in others,
12:04but when it's one word, if you onboard someone,
12:07you are effectively integrating them,
12:09if they're a new employee, into an organisation.
12:11Welcome. On board.
12:13Yeah, onboarding process.
12:14Yes, like we said to you on Monday.
12:16Yeah. Right, 20 points in it.
12:18You could half that gap right now, Julia.
12:21Numbers.
12:22Could I have two large, please?
12:24You can indeed. Two from the top and four little this time.
12:27And the four small ones are four, seven, ten, and six.
12:34And you're large to 125.
12:37And you need to reach 211.
12:41Another low one.
12:42211. Numbers up.
12:482.11, the target nice and low.
13:16Julia?
13:172.07.
13:18Oh, I just missed it.
13:19Four away, Michael.
13:212.10.
13:22And missed it as well, but close enough to steal seven points.
13:26Six minus four.
13:27Six minus four is two.
13:29Times 100.
13:30200.
13:31Plus 10.
13:32Yep, one away.
13:34Go ahead, reach to 11.
13:35Yep, it's the old chestnut.
13:37Find the 11 first.
13:38Seven plus four is 11.
13:40And then 10 minus six is four.
13:42Times 25 is 100.
13:44You have another 100.
13:46And add them all together, 211.
13:49Nice.
13:52Thank you very much, Richard Riley, MBE.
13:55Hello, Sarah Davies, MBE.
13:57Oh, all the cool kids, isn't it?
13:59Get to go to the palace.
14:00What was that like?
14:02What was the day, the experience like?
14:04Do you know, it was unbelievable.
14:05So when I got the call to say, did you want to come for an MBE?
14:09I mean, I didn't actually believe it was true at first.
14:12Well, because they write and they say, we're considering you for an MBE.
14:15And I remember actually ringing the palace and say, how long do you consider it for?
14:19And when do you decide?
14:20Do you think that's in case you say no?
14:23Well, I think it's just, you just have that lack of self-belief, don't you?
14:26So when they're like, no, no, no, this is it.
14:27So they told me, well, I was pregnant at the time, but very, very early stage.
14:31And they gave me all of the dates you could go, and only one of them was before the baby was due.
14:36And I really didn't, my assistant said to me, oh, well, we'll book one as far after the baby as possible.
14:41Well, it's my second child, so I know fine well I'm going to have leaky boobs and loads of, you know.
14:47It wasn't going to be the most attractive, whereas you're always blooming before you have the baby.
14:51So I opted to go the week I knew I was going into hospital to have the baby.
14:55So I was in the palace on the Tuesday, and I actually went into labour on the Thursday.
15:00So it was, and I remember as I went into the palace with my massive 50-pound bump in my four-inch heels,
15:06and I waddled up to Prince William, and he just looked at me and he went, wow, that's, that looks like it's coming soon.
15:12And I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, this week.
15:14And I literally, I was at the palace, we got the train back up to Durham, and I got off the train and went straight into the hospital.
15:20Didn't even go home in between.
15:21Imagine if you had it gone there.
15:23Well, I mean, I just assumed he would be well looked after you.
15:26Do you think, I mean, they'd probably have an ambulance be there in a second, wouldn't it?
15:29They wouldn't let you have it there.
15:31That's a step too far.
15:32That's, that is a dictionary definition of, I'd stay in your welcome.
15:35Yeah, not on that part.
15:37You know, because it's so military, you're in, you've got 30 seconds.
15:40You can't, you can't go in, you can't have a baby.
15:42I tell you what, man, they all looked after me so well.
15:45Yeah.
15:45I mean, everyone just took one look at me and they're like, can we get you a chair?
15:48Can we do this?
15:49Can we go, anything, not a problem.
15:50What an experience for you.
15:52Thankfully, you managed to hold out until you got back up north.
15:54I did, it was good.
15:56Thank you, Sarah.
16:00All right, Michael, you're in the manner born at the moment, looking very, very good for that octo-champ status.
16:06But stranger things have happened.
16:08So keep it steady.
16:09More letters.
16:10May I have a consonant, please?
16:11You may.
16:12Thank you, Michael.
16:13W.
16:14And another.
16:16T.
16:18And another.
16:18And another.
16:22And another.
16:24And a vowel.
16:26And another.
16:30And another.
16:34And another.
16:37A consonant.
16:39And a final consonant, please.
16:46A final S.
16:47Start the clock.
16:48And another.
17:16Two.
17:16How many, Michael? Six.
17:21And Julia? Six. Very good.
17:23Michael? Fasted. And Julia? Fasted.
17:26Same again.
17:28Slim picking, six points each.
17:30Dictionary corner, Susie, Sarah?
17:32We had a couple more sixes, but we couldn't get past a six.
17:35So we had amused and wasted.
17:39One is not amused.
17:40One was not amused without sixes, but yes.
17:42Yeah, we'll just try and do better now, then.
17:44Julia, let's have nine more letters.
17:47Can I start with a consonant, please?
17:49Thank you, Julia.
17:50C. And another.
17:53T. And another.
17:56R. And a vowel, please.
17:59A. And another.
18:02E. And another.
18:05I. And a consonant, please.
18:08S. Another.
18:12Z.
18:15And another consonant, please.
18:16And lastly, L.
18:18Let's do it.
18:20D.
18:48That's time up. Julia?
18:52I think a seven.
18:53Yes, and Michael?
18:55Eight.
18:55An eight. He's pulled an eight out, Julia. What's a seven?
18:59Clarets.
18:59Clarets, what did you see?
19:01Craziest.
19:02And the craziest. Well done.
19:04Well done.
19:07Right, that eight's going to be hard to beat.
19:10Yeah, we had craziest.
19:11Yeah.
19:12I was trying to use that Z, wasn't it?
19:13And then we also managed articles.
19:16Yeah.
19:16But we couldn't get past eight.
19:17No. In my fantasies, I'm the raciest. In reality, I'm the laziest.
19:21So there was a lot of sevens up there as well.
19:24At 54.19, let's go back to the numbers.
19:28And Michael?
19:29One large, five small, please.
19:31Last time for a while. Thank you, Michael.
19:32One large, five little, for old time's sake.
19:36And they are four, nine, nine, six, eight, and 100.
19:44And this target, 557.
19:46I-57, numbers up.
19:48Good luck.
19:48Good luck.
19:48Good luck.
19:48Good luck.
19:49Good luck.
19:50Good luck.
19:53Five, five, seven, Michael.
20:23Five, five, eight.
20:25Mr. Pie, one.
20:26Julia?
20:26Five, five, nine.
20:28Mr. Pie, two.
20:29Go ahead, Michael.
20:31100 minus four.
20:32100 minus four, 96.
20:34Times six.
20:35Times by six is 576.
20:38And then minus the two nines.
20:40And then the two nines for 18.
20:42Take away and one above.
20:44Yeah.
20:44Rich, you're not going to break sweat with this one.
20:46Off you go.
20:47Well, one way.
20:48You could have said 100 minus nine, 91.
20:52Times by six is 546.
20:56And then add the second nine.
20:58And eight over four gives you two.
21:01To get there.
21:02Five, five, seven.
21:03Nice.
21:04APPLAUSE
21:04All right, 61-19.
21:09But hey, it'll make the comeback even more sweet, Julia.
21:12Six rounds still to go.
21:13Let's get your second Tea Town teaser.
21:15Avid Cuts.
21:16Avid Cuts.
21:17They carry the train, but they're not bridesmaids.
21:20They carry the train, but they're not bridesmaids.
21:22They carry the train, but they're not bridesmaids.
21:42Viaducts.
21:43Viaducts.
21:43Well, never the bridesmaids.
21:44So far as Michael Calder.
21:46He's looking odds on.
21:47They've become an octo-champ to their fourth of the series.
21:50But regardless, win or lose, Julia, let's have a good time.
21:54It's your letters.
21:56Could I start with the consonant, please?
21:58Thank you, Julia.
21:59P.
22:00And another.
22:02N.
22:02And another.
22:04G.
22:06And a vowel, please.

23:13Yeah, it's in the dictionary.
23:14Very well done.
23:15The Pongiest.
23:16So seven, eight.
23:17Are we climbing that ladder to a maximum?
23:19No.
23:20We did have the Pongiest one, which I thought was a Belda,
23:23so well done getting that.
23:24Yeah.
23:25And that's her lot there.
23:26All right.
23:27Loads of sevens.

24:41Mr Michael? Six. Six from you. Julia, how do you get on? Six.
24:45Yes, nice. Michael? Gravel. Gravel for you and Julia.
24:49Gravel. Yeah. Nice. Made of stone, both of you.
24:52Six points each to Dictionary Corner. We had a couple of sevens.
24:56So we had Allegro. Yeah. And also Overall.
24:59Very nice indeed. Look at that. 75-25 is where we are at the moment.
25:04It's looking odds on we're going to have those two new challengers tomorrow
25:07and a new OctoChamp today. And then there's the breaks.
25:10You never know what you're going to get when you apply.
25:12You could be facing a seven-time winner or you could be facing another newbie.
25:16But that's the risk you have to take. Either way, I guarantee you'll enjoy it.
25:20It's Countdown at Channel4.com if you'd like to apply.
25:23Countdown at Channel4.com. There's no official daunting form.
25:27You just send us an email. That's how we roll here.
25:29Countdown at Channel4.com. And it's that email you use as well.
25:33If you're curious about a word, you'd like it explained in origins of words.
25:37And Susie, you love those emails coming in. What have we got today?
25:40I do. And I particularly loved this one from Alan Hyatt,
25:43who used to watch Countdown all the time with his wife.
25:48He said she was brilliant at Conundrum.
25:50She sadly passed away in 2016.
25:52He's now retired. Come back to watching it every day.
25:55So, thank you to Alan.
25:58He says,
25:58My father used to tell my brothers and me,
26:00if we were asked what an object was,
26:02it's a wigwam for a mustard mill.
26:05Or, if we asked who someone was,
26:07he would say,
26:08Mick the Spiceball Stitcher.
26:10I suspect he made these up,
26:12or it could just be a Hereford,
26:13because he's from Hereford thing.
26:15So, that's the first part of his email.
26:17And the second part is to ask about to the tune of.
26:21Why do we use it, particularly in relation to money?
26:25And if you look up to the tune of,
26:27first mentioned in 1607,
26:29according to the Oxford English Dictionary,
26:31and it means then in accordance with.
26:33So, following.
26:34And that's the idea of a player following the tune
26:36of a musician or a song.
26:39And then by 1692,
26:41it came to mean the amount or sum of,
26:43especially, as Alan said,
26:44a large sum of money.
26:46And this is probably simply a play
26:49on the idea of sort of something humming,
26:52something sort of being really lively,
26:54or just all a flutter.
26:56So, involving a sort of big quantity
26:57of something quite special,
26:59in this case, money.
27:00So, to the tune of,
27:02it's got a little bit of a ring of ka-ching to it,
27:04I think.
27:05So, the idea of a noise.
27:07But I really wanted to just read that email up,
27:09because it contains so many lovely things.
27:11And, obviously, the heart of our lovely, loyal viewers,
27:15that Alan is still watching,
27:16you know, and he's got lovely memories of his wife.
27:19And, yeah, I just love all those local sayings.
27:22So, please do keep sending them in.
27:23Absolutely. Lots of love, Alan.
27:24Thank you for tuning back in.
27:29Julia, four more rounds.
27:31Your letters.
27:32Could I have a consonant, please?
27:33Thank you, Julia.
27:34M.
27:35And another...
27:36T.
27:38And another...
27:39D.
27:40And a vowel, please.
27:43E.
27:43And another...
27:45A.
27:46And a consonant.
27:48R.
27:49And another...
27:51G.
27:53And a vowel.
27:55O.
27:56And another consonant, please.
27:59Lastly, R.
28:01All right, good luck.
28:25Bye-bye.
28:27This is a令ba.
28:28That'll do us, Julia. Just a six.
28:35That's all right. And Michael? Six.
28:37Yeah, I thought so, Julia. Grated.
28:39Yes. Grated also.
28:41Yep. Excellent stuff. Grated and grated.
28:45See if you can go a bit better than that. Difficult one.
28:48We had mortared. Mortared.
28:50Yes, to attack or bombard with a mortar, the gun for firing shells.
28:56So not particularly nice. Obviously, using warfare, but Sarah's a verb.
29:00And that takes us to an eight. Very nice indeed.
29:03Eight points. It would have been six for both Julia and Michael,
29:06which is nice to get those on the board, Jules.
29:09And, Michael, you're picking the last letters.
29:11May I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Michael.
29:14S. And another.
29:16T. And another.
29:20C. And a vowel.
29:24A. And another.

29:34D. Another consonant.
29:38R. And a final vowel, please.
29:41And a final O.

30:15Michael? I'll try an eight.
30:17I'm going to try it. And Julia? I'll try an eight, then.
30:20Have to. Say if it's the same word. Michael?
30:22Outraced. Outraced. And it is.
30:27All right, outraced.
30:28In the dictionary, to exceed in speed, amount or extent. Well done.
30:32APPLAUSE
30:34Very, very strong eight. Very strong eight.
30:37I'm trying to read the body language.
30:39No, I don't think there's a nine.
30:41How do we get better than a nine?
30:43How do we get better than a nine?
30:45Two nines.
30:46Yay! Amazing! Amazing.
30:49We had croustard.
30:51Is that a food thing?
30:53It is. Yeah, it sounds delicious.
30:55Pastry, crisp, crispened.
30:58And then hollowed out to receive a filling.
31:00To receive a filling is the definition. I like that.
31:02Is crispened a word?
31:03Crispened, I have no idea.
31:04I'm not sure it is.
31:05I'm negative.
31:06You being a lexicographer and all.
31:09Is crispened a word?
31:10Er, not yet.
31:12LAUGHTER
31:13All right, so...
31:14It's crispened.
31:15It's crispened.
31:16It's crispened something.
31:18Oh, well.
31:19Our first one we actually got quite quickly.
31:21Educators.
31:22Ah, yes.
31:23What a spot that is.
31:24APPLAUSE
31:25Nice.
31:26Two nines.
31:27Two nines.
31:28Look at this.
31:29We're crescendoing over the week now.
31:31Tell you what, you're just showboating now.
31:33You're just showboating.
31:34Fantastic.
31:35Right, two more rounds to go.
31:37Guaranteed one more nine, actually, because that'll be the conundrum.
31:40But first of all, the last numbers in your picking.
31:43Julia Blake.
31:44Could I have two large, please, Rachel?
31:45You could indeed.
31:46Two from the top and four more little nines.
31:49And for the final time today, the selection is three, seven, two, ten, one hundred and fifty.
31:58And the target, three hundred and ten.
32:01Three ten.
32:02Last numbers.
32:03High zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero one zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero
32:33All right, 3-10. We've still got to go through the motions. Julia?
32:37Yeah, even I've got this one, 3-10.
32:40Michael? 3-10. Good stuff. Off you go, Julia.
32:43100 times 3 is 300 plus the 10.
32:4610 points. Nice. And off, yeah, have a look.
32:49Yeah, well done with you. APPLAUSE
32:52Nice stuff. 99 plays a 49.
32:55Julia, picking up quite a few points in this last part.
32:58Actually, well done to you. Very nice indeed.
33:00If you can add another 10, it's the last round of the day.
33:04It's Michael's last round. For the time being, at least,
33:07it's Thursday's Countdown Conundrum.
33:14Go on, Michael. Reflected.
33:16Let's have a look at that. Yes.
33:19APPLAUSE
33:20Well done. Well done. Well, give me a second.
33:22We'll reflect on your performance soon.
33:24But, Julia, it's been great to have you. Thank you so much.
33:27I've really enjoyed it, thank you. It is. Really good to have you.
33:29And, Michael, let's talk, sir. Another century.
33:32You'll want to know all these things.
33:34You're fourth octochamp of the series.
33:35So, fantastic work. Yeah.
33:37How do you feel about that?
33:38Can't believe it, to be honest. No.
33:40I just came on trying to not make a fool out of myself
33:44on national television. That was my objective.
33:46Yeah. But you're the type of champion I love
33:48because you arrived with zero expectation.
33:50Quite a lot of nerves as well.
33:52So, it's been great to see you just go all the way over eight episodes
33:55and to get to know you as well.
33:57Thank you, Michael. Well done.
33:59APPLAUSE
34:00Good, good, good, good, good.

34:16Yes.
34:17Because they're fun, aren't they?
34:18Yeah, love them.

34:21called his company Bonnie Tyler.
34:22Brilliant.
