00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Monday afternoon.
00:34We are ready to be the filling in your afternoon schedule every single day this week.
00:40Hello, Rachel Riley. Hello, Colin Murray.
00:41Now, every day this week is Cornish pasty week.
00:45Now, let's not upset our Cornish viewers. Let's get this right.
00:49So it's a meat pie. You don't make it in a pie pan.
00:53It's fold-over pastry baked on a sheet.
00:55And traditionally, it should have beef, swede, stroke turnip, potato and onion.
01:03However, of course, and there's award-winning vegan ones,
01:06but you still have to have swede and potato in there.
01:09I like swede.
01:10Oh, the beef and Cornish blue cheese one is stunning.
01:17But I think it's not as much, don't want to offend Cornish people here,
01:20but I don't think it's as much about the pasty as eating it in Cornwall,
01:23because you can be in St Agnes, St I's, Padstow.
01:28You haven't done a big trip down there yet.
01:30We were talking earlier.
01:31My lovely husband, he keeps going on tour down to Cornwall,
01:34and he says how brilliant it is every single time he goes.
01:36And he never takes me.
01:37That's what he's not telling you.
01:39He's sitting on that park bench.
01:41Eating his pies.
01:42In Padstow.
01:43He does always get back, having put on loads of weight
01:45while he's been on a dance tour, actually. It's very strange.
01:48Well, listen, let's head over to Dixonry Corner for the first time this week.
01:52Filling all our gaps is our G of the D, Susie Dent,
01:55and alongside her all this week, back for a third stint,
01:59it's the author, it's the presenter who rocks the Radio 1 airwaves.
02:03It's Vic Hope.
02:04Hi.
02:07Can't think of anything significant that's happened in your life
02:10since you were last here.
02:11Nothing at all. Congratulations.
02:13Thank you so much.
02:15Am I still calling you Hope?
02:16I just want to check that now you're married.
02:18Well, Hope was never really my name anyway.
02:21Neither of us actually go by our actual names for our work,
02:24so it doesn't change anything.
02:25Right, Vic, lovely to have you here.
02:27Thanks for having me.
02:27Thank you very much.
02:28And Nicky Needham is her new champion.
02:30She won her first game on Friday and is back.
02:32Hiya, Nicky.
02:33Good afternoon.
02:34Now, you are a friend of last year's series champion.
02:39So, Harry Savage, the Soros, what's the connection?
02:43Well, I know of him.
02:44I don't know him that closely, but my son,
02:46my youngest son, does speed-keeping events.
02:49It's a recent event.
02:51He'd done quite well on this show,
02:53and there was an informal countdown tournament halfway through,
02:58and it ended up two tables of speedcubers against Harry,
03:02and he still won.
03:03Still won.
03:03Yeah.
03:04My goodness.
03:04Well, listen, if you're watching, Harry, we love you,
03:07but the show's trademarked.
03:09It's copyrighted.
03:10You can't just hold your own event,
03:12so our lawyers will be in touch with you, Harry.
03:14That's a really bittersweet end.
03:15It was only informal.
03:16My goodness.
03:17It doesn't matter.
03:17Our lawyers are watching.
03:19Our lawyers are watching.
03:20Sorry, Harry.
03:21Nicky, you're up against Mark Lynch today,
03:24who only spent the first six months of his life in Ireland,
03:28has been a Salford boy ever since,
03:30but still consider yourself Irish.
03:32100% Irish.
03:33And the accent's 100% Salford.
03:36Well, listen, you love the airplanes,
03:38and nothing to be ashamed about that.
03:40You work up at Manchester Airport,
03:41but you're into spotting them and all that type of stuff,
03:44and it's good now with the YouTube channels and all.
03:47Yeah, when, like we just said off there,
03:49we're seeing the planes coming in on the YouTube channel
03:52in the bad weather.
03:53Yeah.
03:54It does bring back nightmares of a time in Switzerland,
03:56but I enjoy watching them.
03:59Well, listen, fasten your seatbelt, Mark Lynch,
04:01Nicky Needham, time for take-off.
04:03Good luck.
04:05You wouldn't want a pilot to say good luck,

15:48You know, I've heard that you were doing this yesterday, what about this? We'll take it in that direction.
15:54Yeah.
15:54And I just, I love that. There's so many callers, there's so much to talk about and they're mad. They don't let anything go. The listeners are so funny at that time of day. I used to do breakfast and, you know, we're all a bit sleepy, but by drive, by going home, I don't know, they've got their wits about them.
16:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. You've got a night to look forward to, especially the younger people. Which is great fun. So good. Thank you.

24:59MUSIC PLAYS
25:09Time's up. Nicky? A risky eight.
25:12A risky eight this time. And Mark? Seven.
25:14The seven is? Beastie. And Nicky?
25:17Beaniest. Beaniest? A beaniest chilli.
25:21It's not there, unfortunately. He's stuck at him this time, Nicky. Sorry.
25:25So the seven points counts. Well done, Mr Lynch.
25:28As we head over to Dictionary Corner.
25:30And Susie and Vic? We've got an eight in betaines.
25:34Yes. Betaines. It's a chemical term.
25:37B-E-T-A-I-N-E-S.
25:40And it's all to do with crystalline compounds that you will find in plant juices.
25:45Beautiful. Lovely. OK.
25:47Dictionary Corner. Susie, origins of words for this week.
25:49Are we going to the emails? We are.
25:51We're going to John Attenborough, who asks a very simple question.
25:55Why is awful bad when it is full of awe?
25:58Lawful is full of law. Shouldn't the same apply to awe?
26:02Good point.
26:03John is absolutely right.
26:05Its original sense was full of awe.
26:08And actually, originally, it was less describing somebody who was witnessing something and more the event or the thing that inspired the awe.
26:19So something could be awful if it was absolutely wonderful and, you know, really commanded respect and reverence.
26:26So awe, from the start, though, has been a bit of a mixed bag, a mix of emotions, because it can also be something that inspires dread as well as reverence.
26:36And there were a lot of words for dread at this point.
26:38One of my favourites is a word from the Vikings, ug.
26:41To ug something was to really dread it.
26:44So if something horrible was on the horizon, you would view it with revulsion, dread, etc., you ugged it.
26:50If something was ugsome, it inspired that feeling.
26:53And, of course, it survives only in ugly, which has lost a little bit of its power since then.
26:58And awe is sort of quite similar.
27:00It had that sense of revulsion as well right from the start.
27:04And the way that these things go, and we do tend to be a fairly pessimistic lot, is they might start off as being reasonably positive, but they tend to go downhill.
27:14And they also lose their power.
27:15So if we think of something being terrible, that, too, was something that really inspired terror in quite a dramatic way.
27:23But now we just say, oh, that's a terrible thing.
27:25It has lost its power.
27:26And by the 18th century, awful had acquired its very weakened sense of something that's a little bit objectionable.
27:33We even use it still in a positive sense to say, oh, that's awfully nice of you.
27:37So it's still got that mixed identity.
27:40Awesome, on the other hand, first appeared in the 16th century, always expressive of awe in the good sense.
27:46So while awful went to the dark side, awesome has always been on the positive side.
27:51But that, too, sadly, has lost a little bit of its power.
27:54And you might just say, oh, that's awesome, as a bit of a throwaway.
27:57But once, it was incredibly powerful.
27:59Great.

29:37used to control its role.
29:39Yeah, fantastic.
29:39Well, listen, how did Mark Lynch not get that?
29:42With your airplane obsession.

31:00Risky seven. OK, Nicky? Dangled.
31:03Dangled. Very good. Mark?
31:05Lendage. Lendage?
31:07Stuff that you lend.
31:08It's not there, I'm afraid.
31:10Sorry, Mark. Anything else, Victoria?
31:13Fur seven as well. Gladden.
31:15Gladden and that's it.
31:16I'm a heart. Yeah. You have a dongle
31:18instead of a dangle. You can dongle.
31:20Can you pass tense dongle?
31:21No, I did check that, sadly. Not dongle.
31:23We dongle. Us kids dongle
31:26all the time. Dongling.
31:2885, 35.
31:30Two more rounds to go, Mark.
31:31It's your numbers. You're going to go six small again?
31:34Let's find out. Yeah, let's go six small
31:35for a bit of fun. Why not? I like your
31:37spirit. Six little ones to finish the day
31:40off, numbers-wise. And the
31:41final selection is one,
31:43five, six,
31:46two, two,
31:47and nine.
31:49And this target, 432.
31:52Depends how you define fun.
31:53Four, three, two. Let's go.
31:55music.
31:57.
32:05.
32:09.
32:13.
32:14.
32:14.
32:16432, Mark.
32:27440.
32:28Missed it by 8, Nicky.
32:30Same 440.
32:31Oh, my goodness me.
32:32Well, off you go, Mark.
32:34Let's hear it.
32:35So, 5 plus 2 is 7.
32:38Yep.
32:38Times 6, 42.
32:40Yep.
32:41Plus 2.
32:42Yeah, the 2, 44.
32:43And then 9 plus 1 is 10, then times it.
32:47Yep, 8 away.
32:47What you do, Nicky?
32:49I did 9 times 5 is 45.
32:52Yes.
32:53Minus the 1 is 44.
32:56And then 6 plus 2 plus 2 is 10, and times them.
33:00440 again.
33:02Is it to do with 8?
33:04It's divisible by 8, but it's also divisible by 9,
33:06and also divisible by 6.
33:07Oh, OK.
33:08So, if you say 2 plus 5 plus 1 is 8,
33:12then you already have your 6 and you already have your 9,
33:14and that's all it was.
33:15Ah, that's great.
33:16APPLAUSE
33:16Formidable.
33:18Loved it.
