00:01Austin City Limits presents two of country music's finest singer-songwriters.
00:07Kelsey Ballerini.
00:21And Cam.
00:30I can hold on to you somehow in this burning house.
00:38Oh, and I don't want to wake up in this burning house.
00:46Thank you, Austin City Limits.
00:49This is Austin City Limits.
00:51All right, Austin City Limits.
01:09All right, Austin City.
01:12One, two, three, let's go.
01:14All right, all right, all right.
01:16Thank you very much.
01:1750 years of Austin City Limits.
01:21All right, all right.
01:23Recorded live from Austin, Texas, it's Austin City Limits.
01:30Now, an artist defining the sound of country music today, Kelsey Ballerini.
01:36Oh, hey, boy, with your high back, I kind of like that.
01:42If you want to walk my highway, I'm going to shoot you straight up.
01:46Show me what you're made of.
01:48I don't have time to waste on the boys that play the games.
01:52Leaving the girls, crying out in the rain.
01:55So tell me, Texas, do you got what it takes?
02:01If you're going to hold me, hold me like I'm leaving.
02:04Kiss me, kiss me like you need it.
02:07Baby, if you're not, your best kids are leaving.
02:10You're going to love me, love me like you mean it.
02:13You're going to talk the talk, you better walk it.
02:16You want to keep me, keep me like you lost it.
02:19You're going to say you make me believe it.
02:23You're going to love me, boy, what?
02:24You're going to love me like you mean it.
02:27There we are.
02:28Oh, hey, I've had my share of losers, bars and users, looking for a heart to break.
02:40So if you're like that, we'll take a step back.
02:43Because we don't have time to waste on the boys that are playing the games.
02:48Leaving the girls, crying out in the rain.
02:50So tell me, baby, are you just crazy or crazy over me?
02:57Hold me, hold me like I'm leaving.
02:59You're going to kiss me, kiss me like you need it.
03:02Baby, if you're not, your best kids are leaving.
03:06You're going to love me, love me like you mean it.
03:09You're going to talk the talk, you better walk it.
03:12You're going to keep me, keep me like you lost it.
03:15You're going to say you make me believe it.
03:17If you're going to love me, boy, love me like you mean it.
03:26If you're going to love me, boy, love me like you mean it.
03:32If you're going to hold me, hold me like I'm leaving.
03:38If you're going to kiss me, kiss me like you need it.
03:42If you're going to love me, love me like you mean it.
04:02Love me like you mean it, yeah, yeah.
04:09Hey, if you're gonna love me, love me, love me.
04:13Woo!
04:15Love me like you mean it.
04:32I don't pack the I travel for a living.
04:40And I don't abide by that 50-pound limit on that Delta flight.
04:46I'm blessed.
04:47I'm there every other Thursday.
04:51But my heart ain't up in the air.
04:54So if you want me, come on.
04:56Kick out a drawer, clear out a shelf.
04:59I don't know what I want to do with anybody else.
05:02Everything was heavy.
05:03I took it at the door.
05:05Now I feel like I don't need it anymore.
05:07I got some bones and full skeletons from the old house
05:11at the dead end.
05:12I got baggage, but I'm moving.
05:18We both slept on a mattress with I love you the more.
05:23I even took it all the way to the sink pool.
05:27So, boy, I know the weight and gravity.
05:31You can't change with sinkies.
05:33But if you want that, we'll come back.
05:37Then roll it out with me.
05:39Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf.
05:42I wouldn't want to do with anybody else.
05:45Everything was heavy, yeah.
05:46Check it at the door.
05:48I kind of feel like I don't need it anymore.
05:50I got some bones and full skeletons from the old house
05:54at the dead end.
05:55I got baggage, but I'm moving.
06:04If you want it, you know that you got it.
06:10I took those thoughts in your head.
06:12My handbag, pocket in your jeans.
06:15Letting sheets and our bed.
06:17Cause home is when you're with me.
06:19So, clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf.
06:22I wouldn't want to do with anybody else.
06:25Everything that's heavy, yeah.
06:26Check it at the door.
06:28I got a feel like I don't need it.
06:30I got some notable skeletons from the old house of the dead
06:35and I got baggings that I'm moving in.
06:39Open up my mind, I'm living in my head.
06:41Open up my next year.
06:43I said if you want it, well, you know that you've got it.
06:49You ready to sing it with us?
06:51All right.
06:53And it sounds like clear out of joy and clear out of shell.
06:57I wouldn't want to do with anybody else.
07:00Clear out of joy, clear out of shell.
07:03I wouldn't want to do with anybody else.
07:06Clear out of joy, clear out of shell.
07:08But wouldn't want to do with anybody else!
07:27To the men that love women after heartbreak
07:39To the hellos that come after goodbyes
07:44To the rain that was falling
07:49That watered the garden
07:52And the ones that bring the flowers back to life
07:56To the men that love women after heartbreak
08:03To the tears they catch but didn't make them fall
08:08To the strong and sturdy shoulders
08:13Helping her get over
08:16And the ones that get forever after all
08:20It ain't fair and it's hard to understand
08:26It ain't easy but you do it cause you can
08:32You don't see my heart a second hand
08:39And baby that's why it takes me
08:45To love women after heartbreak
08:51To the architect that's breaking down the house
08:57The carpenter and painter
09:01The all night renovator
09:04Building her back up from the ground
09:09It ain't fair and it's hard to understand
09:15It ain't easy but you do it cause you can
09:21You don't see my heart a second hand
09:27And baby that's why it takes me
09:34To the man that loved this woman after heartbreak
09:40To the man that loved this woman after heartbreak

14:22This is called Beg For Your Love.
14:35For a kiss, for a morning cold, for you to hear me after all, for you to not put back
14:55up walls, when you're hurting, for you to let me on mine, and I overshadow it, and really
15:06come to my defense, like I'm worth it, I deserve it, I'd follow you to the moon, babe, you know
15:16I'm ride or die for you, but if you wanna chase, I won't run, I ain't gonna beg for
15:23your love, I wanna go the distance, babe, but you can't do it if I betray, all the way
15:31before you work, I'm done, I ain't gonna beg for your love.
15:38You never helped me turn the stone, and damn, it's getting old, when your shoulder's feeling
15:55cold, but I'm trying, are you trying?
15:59If you want sorry on my knees, but babe, that can't be me, God, you can be so me when I'm
16:09crying, but I'll follow you to the moon, but you know I'm ride or die for you, but if you
16:19wanna chase, I won't run, I ain't gonna beg for your love, I wanna go the distance, babe,
16:27but I can't do it if I betray, all the way before you work, I'm done, I ain't gonna beg for
16:35your love.
16:36Oh, is this just way too tough? Are you not strong enough? Cause God, you're all I want,
16:55but not like this. I'd follow you to the moon, but it's getting harder to do, if you wanna
17:07chase, I won't run, I ain't gonna beg for your love. Asking you to say it back, it shouldn't
17:16have to be like that, so help me help you help us. Don't make me say I'm done, I ain't gonna
17:28beg for your love. For a kiss or a morning call.
17:46You're just a lost boy, with your head up in the clouds. You're just a lost boy, ever keep
18:01your feet on the ground. Always gonna fly away, just because you know you can. Never gonna learn
18:15there's no such places. Never let you don't understand. You'll never grow. You're never gonna be a
18:26man. Peter Pan. Deep down I knew that you were too good to be true. But every piece and part
18:42of me wanted to believe in you. Wanted to believe in you. And now it's happily ever and ever. I guess
18:49now I know better. You're just a lost boy, with your head up in the clouds. You're just a lost boy, never
18:57keep your feet on the ground. Always gonna fly away, just because you know you can. Never gonna learn
19:09there's no such places. Never let you don't understand. You'll never grow up. You're never gonna be a man. Peter Pan.
19:24You're just a lost boy. You're just a lost boy, yeah. I know who you are. And you don't know what you're
19:37lost, boy. You're too busy chasing stars. And you're always gonna fly away. And just because you know you can.
19:51You're never gonna be a man. I ain't gonna pay for your love. You're never gonna pay for your love. You'll never
20:04grow up. And you're never gonna be a man. I ain't gonna pay for your love. Peter Pan.
20:14Mm-hmm.
20:17Mm-mm.
21:20And the interstate was so loud, there was a light it had to drown out.
21:27We played the part five nights, but we were never there on the weekends, baby.
21:36We got along real nice, but when I left town, did you hate me?
21:43One day, the curtains started coming down.
21:47I changed the second we were moving out.
21:51I guess wrong can look all right.
21:54We're playing home in a penthouse, baby.
21:58I bought the house with a fence, enough room for some kids, a backyard for dibs.
22:12And I thought that would make it all better.
22:16And maybe forever wouldn't feel like the walls closing in.
22:21Because how does that even make sense?
22:25Now that I think about it, it never did.
22:29We played the part five nights, but we were never there on the weekends, baby.
22:37We got along real nice, but when I left town, did you hate me?
22:45One day, the curtains started coming down.
22:48I had changed the second we were moving out.
22:52And I guess wrong can look all right when you're playing home in a penthouse, baby.
23:02Because we were playing home in a penthouse, baby.
23:13And it hurts putting it in a box, and now we don't talk.
23:19And it stings, rolling up the welcome mat, knowing you've got half.
23:34I kissed someone new last night, and now we don't care.
23:40We get sleeping, baby.
23:42We got along real nice, and still I want it out.
23:47Now I know you hate me.
23:50One day, the curtains started coming down.
23:53Heat you change the second you were moving out.
23:57I guess wrong can look all right when you're playing home in a penthouse, baby.
24:07Because we were playing home in a penthouse, baby.
24:12I just bought the house that we saw, you said it was wrong.
24:27But I wanted it all along.
24:39Thank you so much for having us tonight.
24:54What a bucket list.
24:55What a dream.
24:56Thank you guys for being here.
24:58I hope you had as much fun as we did, yeah?
25:02My name is Kelsey.
25:03I'll see you soon.
25:03I promise.
25:04Thank you guys.
25:09I've always written about my life.
25:35But I think, you know, when you listen to my first record, you hear dibs and you hear
25:41Love Me Like You Mean It and Yeah Boy, and that was 19-year-old me.
25:46Like, I was just in this, like, just starry-eyed, happy-go-lucky, very naive, flirty phase of
25:53my life.
25:54But when I was writing those songs, I was writing them about my experience, but I wouldn't put
25:59too much detail about my actual experience into it, because the goal was for it to be
26:05for everyone.
26:06And I thought that if you made things a little bit more vague, if you rounded the edges on
26:11the songwriting, then it would touch more people.
26:14It would connect with more people.
26:15And I put out an EP a couple years ago now called Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, and that
26:22was so specific.
26:25And I made it differently than any other record.
26:28Like, it wasn't for commercial success.
26:32It was for me.
26:34And it connected differently than any record, any song I'd ever put out.
26:38And I think it brought me back to, like, my center and the compass of, oh, like, maybe
26:45if I just write about my human experience and I do it in a way that I don't round the
26:52edges and I don't, like, white out something because it feels too personal.
26:56Like, what if I just do that?
26:59And that was, like, Patterns as the record.
27:02That was my first time for a full album, really trying to keep it all, like, keep the integrity
27:09of the songwriting, but also keep the integrity of the honesty in it.
27:16Next, the captivating live performer with a soaring voice, Cam.
27:22We're going to start off with a little mission statement here, if you couldn't tell.
27:26This song is called Slow Down, and I want you all to take a deep breath.
27:32You are here.
27:36You're nowhere else.
27:38You're not at work.
27:40You're not tending to something in the future or the past.
27:44Capitalism doesn't own you.
27:49I appreciate you.
27:51Let's slow down together.
27:53Slow down, honey, slow down.
28:15They get all the hurry.
28:18You get all the worry, but there's peace to be found.
28:26Slow down.
28:30Honey, slow down.
28:36If you get a funny feeling that it's not your dream, you're dreaming.
28:41You're an energizer bunny, helping those that make their money, running you in to the ground.
29:09Slow down, honey, slow down.
29:21For every dollar taken, your only bones are breaking.
29:27Mmm, slow down.
29:31This is alchemy.
29:47Patterns in the grass Through the looking glass The ground inhales, ground exhales
30:01This too shall pass From dust to flesh to bones to dust
30:07We are golden We are golden
30:11Call it a miracle I call it alchemy
30:13Call it a miracle I call it alchemy
30:15I call it alchemy I hear love sound
30:18Coming back again And I need it now
30:23You're a golden
30:25From lost to free to found to lost
30:27We are golden
30:31We are golden, call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
30:39Born in the darkness, heavenly departed.
30:44All alone walking home, back where we started.
30:50From lost to free to found to lost, we are golden.
30:54We are golden, call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
31:01And I hear that sound, coming back again.
31:07And I need it now, to keep it together.
31:12Dust to flesh to bones to dust, we are golden.
31:16We are golden.
31:19And call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
31:23Call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
31:25Call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
31:28Going, going, going, coming, come to life, we are golden.
31:40And I hear that sound, coming back again.
31:50And I need it now, to keep it together.
31:55Dust to flesh to bones to dust, we are golden.
31:59We are golden, call it a miracle, I call it alchemy.
32:06In the darkness, heavenly departed.
32:17All alone walking home, back where we started.
32:21Dust to flesh to bones to dust, we are golden.
32:39This is called Hallelujah.
32:40The night is over, but it's still too dark to see.
32:59As the morning choir sings.
33:02A thousand times they've lit the skies with joyful cries.
33:08But it don't sound like hallelujah.
33:11It don't sound like hallelujah.
33:15I sang till my heart was sore.
33:18I always knew the course.
33:25I still believe, but now I'm not so sure, boy.
33:31Why you don't sound like hallelujah anymore.
33:34I asked the prophets and the keepers of the code.
33:41Surely one of them would know.
33:48They just smile and say, I'm fine.
33:51I know they're lying.
33:52Cause it don't sound like hallelujah.
33:55It don't sound like hallelujah.
33:58I sang till my heart was sore.
34:02I always knew the course.
34:09Still believe, but now I'm not so sure, boy.
34:14Why you don't sound like hallelujah anymore.
34:19It don't sound like hallelujah anymore.
34:24It don't sound like hallelujah.
34:28Hallelujah.
34:29It don't sound like hallelujah anymore.
34:33They just saw hallelujah.
34:36There's plenty of words.
34:41...
34:45...
34:48Deux çıkare ...
34:56...
35:01I had a friend whose mom found out that the husband was cheating, and in real life for
35:26a long time she didn't get an apology that she wanted, and I was like, oh, I'm a songwriter,
35:31I can do this, I got magic, and I wrote her the apology that she deserved.
36:01To be continued...
36:13Oh, I promise I didn't know
36:37he was your man
36:39I would have noticed
36:43a gold wedding band
36:45Diane
36:45I'd rather
36:49you hate me than not understand
36:51Oh, Diane
36:55You picked the time and the place
37:03Don't know how much
37:05this hurts
37:07I gave him my heart
37:09to break
37:10Now I know he broke
37:12yours first
37:14Lying right there in my bed
37:17While he was lying
37:19to you
37:20Believe in the words
37:23that he said
37:24How could we be such fools
37:27And all those nights
37:31And all those nights
37:31that he's given to me
37:34I wish that I could give them
37:38back to you
37:40Diane
37:42I promise I didn't know
37:47he was your man
37:49I would have noticed
37:53Just a gold wedding band
37:54Diane
37:55I'd rather you hate me than not understand
38:02Oh, Diane
38:04You can blame me if it helps
38:10That's what a good wife would do
38:13But you're only cheating yourself
38:16I'm choosing him
38:18I'm choosing him
38:18Over the truth
38:20And all those nights
38:23That he's given to me
38:27I wish that I could give them back
38:31To you
38:32Diane
38:34I promise I didn't know
38:40he was your man
38:42I would have noticed
38:45a gold wedding band
38:47Diane
38:48I'd rather you hate me
38:52than not understand
38:54Oh, Diane
38:57You ready?
39:20Oh, Diane
39:26Diane
39:28Oh, Diane
39:33Oh, Diane
39:35I'd rather you hate me
39:37than not understand
39:39Oh, Diane
39:42Oh, Diane
39:44And all those nights
39:48that he's given to me
39:51I wish that I could give them back
39:55back to you
39:58Oh, yeah
40:02Oh, Diane
40:04Oh, Diane
40:08Oh, Diane
40:09Oh, Diane
40:12If you need something, tell me.
40:23If you want someone's shoulder, I've got to just for you, just for you.
40:42Just for you, no words, no tears, no promises to make, cause feelings don't know nothing about
41:06time and space.
41:13Tell me if you want someone's shoulder, I've got to.
41:25Just for you, just for you.
41:32Oh, crazy, I'm crazy for feeling so lonely.
41:39Oh, crazy, I'm crazy for feeling so lonely.
41:50I'm crazy, I'm crazy for feeling so blue.
42:05I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted.
42:20And then someday, you'd leave me for somebody new.
42:35Worry, why do I let myself worry?
42:42Wondering, what in the world did I do?
42:50Wondering, what in the world did I do?
43:03Wondering, what in the world did I do?
43:04I'm crazy for thinking that my love could hold you.
43:10could hold you. I'm crazy for trying, and crazy for crying, and I'm crazy for loving you.
43:30Crazy for crying, and crazy for trying, and I'm crazy for loving you.
44:00The thing that I think, in my experience, makes us so American is that we're dreamers,
44:17and we have these crazy ideas of what's possible, and we don't meet them.
44:25And yet still, we dream. That's the important part.
44:34Nothing really ends.
44:53For things to stay the same, they have to change again.
45:02Hello, my old friend. You change your name, but not the ways you play pretend.
45:12American Requiem
45:19Them big ideas
45:21Yeah
45:22Are buried here
45:23Yeah
45:25Hey
45:29Amen
45:42Goodbye to what has been
45:48A pretty house that we never settled in
45:53A funeral for fair-weathered friends
45:58I am the one to cleanse me of my father's sins
46:05American Requiem
46:06American Requiem
46:11Them old ideas
46:13Yeah
46:14Are buried here
46:15Yeah
46:16Hey
46:19Hey
46:24Hey
46:26Amen
46:30hari
46:38Hey
46:39Hey
46:40Sal
47:00I had a dream about a burning house
47:14You were stuck inside, I couldn't get you out
47:20I laid beside you and pulled you close
47:26And the two of us went up in smoke
47:32Love is known that it seems I did you wrong
47:40I'll stay here with you until this dream is gone
47:47I've been sleepwalking, been wandering all night
47:54Trying to take what's lost and broken, make it right
47:59I've been sleepwalking, too close to the fire
48:08But it's the only place that I can hold you tight
48:13In this burning house
48:19I see you at a party and you look the same
48:24I could take you back but people don't ever change
48:31I wish that we could go back in time
48:36And I'd be the one you thought you'd find
48:42Love is known that it seems I did you wrong
48:50I'll stay here with you until this dream is gone
48:57I've been sleepwalking, been wandering all night
49:04Trying to take what's lost and broken, make it right
49:09I've been sleepwalking, too close to the fire
49:18But it's the only place that I can hold you tight
49:22In this burning house
49:28Flames are getting bigger now
49:31In this burning house
49:35I can hold on to you somehow
49:38In this burning house
49:41Oh, and I don't want to wake up
49:45In this burning house
49:49I've been sleepwalking, been wandering all night
49:57Trying to take what's lost and broken, make it right
50:02I've been sleepwalking, too close to the fire
50:10But it's the only place that I can hold you tight
50:15But it's the only place that I can hold you tight
50:15In this burning house
50:28I can hold on to you
50:35Thank you
50:35Thank you
50:36Thank you
51:06Country music has always been this incredible vehicle for us humans to tell each other things that sound maybe nice and cute but are really somewhat heartbreaking and very real and important to say.
51:27And in that tradition there's been a lot of great, great, great songwriters and singers.
51:36I think we are doing ourselves a disservice, missing out on probably some of the greatest writers and singers that we discount at the jump because they don't look exactly like who we think a country singer might look like.
51:55Everyone who is great, especially women, especially people of color, especially anyone who doesn't fit the mold, they showed up.
52:05They did as hard as they could figure out what art was going to make themselves light up and make an audience light up.
52:11And someone told them they weren't right or they weren't good enough.
52:16This happened to everybody.
52:17And the people that are still there making music decided they were going to plant their feet in the ground and said, I'm not going anywhere.
