00:00G'day, Battlers.
00:03We see you out there doing everything you can for your family and friends.
00:07And we see where you've been living.
00:10That kitchen's had nothing done to it since World War II.
00:14We know times are tough.
00:16For too many hard-working Aussies, it means putting your dream home on hold.
00:20I had plans for it, but it just never happened.
00:23And that's where we come in.
00:27We are back.
00:29Hey Norm, over.
00:30Any diaries in virtue, over.
00:32Bigger than ever.
00:33More battlers, more renovations, and more money.
00:40There's no more money, Norm.
00:44We are rolling up our sleeves to prove that big transformations don't need big bucks.
00:49I got it on Facebook Marketplace.
00:50She wanted $250, got it out of $200.
00:54We've got just five days and $10,000.
00:58Plano's aren't just for the rich.
01:01To give deserving Aussies a home.
01:03Look!
01:04Spies!
01:05Oh!
01:09This is beautiful.
01:10That they can be proud of.
01:14Thank you so much.
01:15No way.
01:16Gotta make me comfortable for the rest of my life.
01:19This is Budget Battlers.
01:20Oh no, we're crying already and we haven't even said anything.
01:25Tonight.
01:26Nice to meet you.
01:27Some famous friends drop in.
01:28We didn't like the Panthers.
01:30One wall divides the team.
01:31You could not get three worst guys in charge of design.
01:35Ceiling's different out there.
01:36Yeah, great.
01:37I boycott.
01:38And we give an iconic house an iconic makeover.
01:42Oh no.
01:46This is beautiful.
01:48Grab a cuppa.
01:49This is Budget Battlers.
01:50Brisbane.
01:51Home of the Story Bridge.
01:52Suncorp Stadium.
01:53And somewhere in there, one of my old mates from Cairns.
01:55Quinton.
01:56He's an ex-police officer.
01:57Totally unrelated to how I know him.
01:59I've known Jess for 20 years now.
02:00We met through mutual friends and we used to knock about together up in Cairns.
02:05She's a great person.
02:06Great personality.
02:07A lot of fun to be around.
02:08And just a heart of gold.
02:09Oh, you're too kind, Quinton.
02:10And this is how I first found out about Aunty Velda.
02:11So Aunty Velda, she's a well-respected elder.
02:12Garing Garing and South Sea Island woman who has a lot of respect within the sporting community,
02:32with rugby league and the Queensland cricket community.
02:35Mum did many things in the community.
02:38She sat on many boards.
02:40She was actually the president of the Brisbane Council of Elders.
02:43She was part of the Murray Courts where young defenders would have to face the Board of Elders.
02:52Many people know Mum through her acknowledgements of country.
02:56She would deliver an acknowledgement of country that you would always remember.
03:01There's people from all walks of life that know her and that we're, to this day, still discovering that.
03:11We had posted something about Mum a couple of weeks ago on social media and someone had commented that,
03:17Oh, I owe my life to her.
03:19I owe everything to your mum.
03:21I've never heard of this person's name before.
03:24And I'm like, what happened?
03:26Velda and her husband bought this house in the Brisbane suburb of Milton in the late 70s.
03:30And instantly, Velda opened the doors to everyone.
03:33You know when you're growing up and there's always that house you could just drop into when you were passing by?
03:37Well, in Brizzy, that was Aunty Velda's house.
03:41This house was a very welcoming house.
03:44People from all walks of life came in here from different nationalities.
03:48Didn't matter what colour or skin.
03:50That door was always open.
03:52This will continue to be a generational household that will stay in this place of Milton for the rest of our lives.
04:04We had bugger all.
04:06But every night you come into this kitchen here, doesn't matter who walked through that door,
04:11we'd all just share it around.
04:13Mum passed away about two and a half years ago.
04:24Your mum is always there for you.
04:27Your mum will always have your heart.
04:32My mum was a toilet work in her life.
04:38And helped the people worse off than her.
04:41That's filtered down through myself and my siblings.
04:46That's her share here.
04:51Hasn't moved since you passed away.
04:53Unfortunately, all the focus on other people means the house hasn't really had much done to it for a while.
04:59You're going back 30 odd years.
05:01We got the deck put out the back.
05:03It needs a little bit of a touch up.
05:07I agree, Paulie.
05:08This old Queenslander needs some serious renovating.
05:11I mean, the laundry is still outside.
05:13Once I heard that, I knew the Budget Battlers had found their next project.
05:17So currently living at Aunty Veldas' house is her son Paul and her daughter Luana.
05:26We're so excited as a community.
05:28We couldn't think of anyone better than Jess to show Aunty Veldas' house some love and respect.
05:33What does this house mean to your soul?
05:37What does it mean to you in the heart?
05:39Oh, it's everything.
05:41You know, our parents worked very hard for this house.
05:46To provide something that they never had when they grew up.
05:50So it has actually been an absolute blessing.
05:53This house and what it's done for us and our families and for other families as well.
05:58You know, it's an open door.
06:01People can come in.
06:03They come in as strangers and leave as family.
06:06This just isn't a house.
06:08It is a treasure trove of memories.
06:10You can just feel the love here.
06:11A lot of good has been done here and we don't want to lose it.
06:14Where would Aunty Veldas be in this room that is?
06:18So this chair right here, it's a bit raggedy now, but we keep it here because that reminds us of Mum.
06:24So when she came into the lounge room, she would sit here.
06:29Okay.
06:30What would have she wanted in this room renovation wise?
06:32This wall here that separates this room with another bedroom.
06:37Always wanted to open that up.
06:40Keep your wishes coming because Norm's way more polite in front of you guys.
06:43Okay.
06:44She doesn't swear as much.
06:45I'm so good.
06:46Get him to sign everything.
06:47I'm looking.
06:48I'm looking.
06:49I'm looking.
06:50I'm looking.
06:51Just trying to work out how we can make it all happen.
06:52It'll be fine.
06:53That's all.
06:54I've already tapped for studs.
06:55She'll be right.
06:58Luana, what do you reckon we should do with her?
07:01Where we have our laundry downstairs.
07:03It would be ideal to actually bring our laundry upstairs.
07:07Yes.
07:08I've only had one indoor laundry my whole life.
07:11Yeah.
07:12And you just feel flash.
07:13Really rich people never know the buzz of what it feels like to have an outdoor laundry
07:16forever.
07:17And then you can just roll in in your undies one day and get your knickers out.
07:20Absolutely.
07:21Oh my God.
07:24She ate a shed.
07:25She's a castle.
07:26How many would be in here?
07:27Close to 200.
07:28This is unbelievable.
07:29Is this your happy place, right?
07:30Yeah, it is.
07:31It just, when I come in here, it just brings back a lot of memories.
07:35As you can see, my brother's shirt up here.
07:38Yeah.
07:39And all the friends and family that have passed away, they've got shirts up here.
07:42And just the memory of them, you know?
07:43And just, a lot of sting was for me.
07:48And nephews.
07:49That's so nice.
07:50I love that, Paul.
07:51Norm's phone's going off and ruined the whole thing.
07:55My little mate here never gave me an itch of what was going on with this job until I walked
08:05in.
08:06So, for me, it was a big surprise.
08:07What's your plans?
08:08Well, I like it the way she is, but I reckon we could make it look real good if we just lifted
08:15all these archways up so that they're a little bit higher, knocked out these walls, gave it
08:19a big spray and then, like, changed it so that it was all the same colour.
08:23When she let me know that we were pulling walls out, I cringed.
08:28Because just pulling walls out usually isn't that easy.
08:31How much of a budget have we got to do this?
08:33Mate, it's a wall.
08:35You just used your hands.
08:36How much of a budget?
08:37Because we need to get timber beams and they're not cheap.
08:39How much of beams?
08:41Probably looking at four or five hundred bucks a boom.
08:44Mate, it is worth it.
08:45How many do you need?
08:46Is it in the budget?
08:47Yep.
08:48It certainly is.
08:49Probably need four booms.
08:50That's a fifth of your budget.
08:51I know, Matt.
08:52Could you imagine it though?
08:54You walk in the natural light just bouncing off the beautiful crisp walls and they go,
08:59God, has this been designed by someone really flashy?
09:03And you're like, no, we just bought five beams.
09:06The other thing I've got to look at is structure.
09:09Yep.
09:10What's load-bearing, what's not load-bearing, whether we can do it, whether we can't do it.
09:13To be able to have everyone in the one room in a circle talking and connecting and swapping stories.
09:19Mate, it's not about just fashion.
09:22If you open it up, people have to be together.
09:24And when they're together, they have to be connected.
09:26It's unnegotiable.
09:27I've got to get up on the roof and have a look at it.
09:29I'm just not used to you saying it, not being angry.
09:31Norm's started meditating.
09:33I find that helps.
09:34I'm sorry.
09:40Anything's possible to a certain degree, but I need to see if it's load-bearing and whether it can actually happen.
09:46If it's a cost issue, if it's an engineering issue, we don't have that time, we don't have that money on this job to do it.
09:54So if we can't do it, I'm not letting it happen.
09:56I'm going to go and get a ladder and have a look in this manhole.
09:59Right.
10:00Why do they call it a manhole?
10:01It's so...
10:02What about a womanhole?
10:03This week, budget battlers are in the Brisbane suburb of Milton.
10:18I couldn't tell you why we chose here of all places.
10:22It's a coincidence, I promise.
10:24We're actually here to help a family bring their old Queenslander into the 21st century.
10:30Easier said than done with only 10K.
10:32So here's the plan.
10:33We're going to spruce up the entire house, but focusing mainly on the shed, the laundry and the living room.
10:40In the living room, we're going to knock down three walls.
10:43This does get rid of a bedroom, but remember the renovation is about connection.
10:47So it creates a huge living space.
10:50We'll make it feel even bigger with light flooring and a lick of paint on the walls.
10:54And hopefully we can snag some great furniture that will bring earthy tones to the space.
10:58We'll move the outside laundry inside Loana's dream to where the storeroom is.
11:02And we'll be keeping it clean and simple with a soft charcoal pallet and adding some storage.
11:08And now for the shed.
11:09I hope Paulie will love the flooring we'll put down.
11:12We'll also run some electricity to it and chuck in a big TV.
11:16Here's the budget as it stands.
11:18So far, we've got $2,500 for paint, $1,000 for timber beams, $700 for waterproofing, spending just $4,200.
11:26But let's be honest, it's going to be love and heart that gets us through this build.
11:30It's the theme of the house.
11:32Start your motors, budget battlers.
11:34It's reno time.
11:36But before we start the renovation, looking after Aunty Velda's possessions and the families is our number one priority.
11:59So, Normie's popped down to the local storage king.
12:02Hi mate, how are you?
12:03Going well, how are you Normie?
12:04And picked up one of their handy vans and a stack of foxes.
12:08And the team are now packing everything up to get it ready for the renovation.
12:21Good?
12:22Yep.
12:23Jeez, you look good.
12:24I'm feeling great.
12:27I thought you'd be quicker than that.
12:29While Norman Foreman Lee are up in the woman hole, looking quite confused mind you.
12:32But the actual wall is over there.
12:34I wanted to check with our investment mentor Lachlan Vidler.
12:37God, he's flashed.
12:38To see if bringing the walls down will actually add value to the place.
12:43As we walk in, it's quite closed in.
12:45So we're thinking of getting rid of all these walls and opening up the entire house.
12:50Which is going to mean the house is going to go from a four bedroom to three bedroom.
12:54But we're going to have open plan.
12:55Like, should we do it?
12:56Four bedrooms is definitely a great situation to be in.
12:59But, and here's my but, it's about what's also around you.
13:02And three bedroom in this area is not that uncommon.
13:05So, if we're looking at losing a bedroom, but opening up a whole bunch of space,
13:10I think, depending on the outcome, it could be a good trade off.
13:13If we take those walls down, have we stuffed the house?
13:16And he said, no, it's going to make it better and more valuable.
13:20And that's why we've got him.
13:22That's why he's so rich.
13:24He is.
13:25He really is.
13:26Have you seen his boots?
13:27They're leather.
13:28You don't get those boots working at a supermarket.
13:30That's what it's all.
13:31We've got Jake's boots here.
13:34Right.
13:35With Lachlan on my side, that only leaves Norman Lee to fall into line.
13:38We can only just put a beam up here, Norman.
13:40Even a beam that's too long that way.
13:42But a beam that way, and just joist hangers.
13:45We've got to support that.
13:47So, we'd need a beam across that end.
13:49The only thing I'm worried about is if we take this section of the hallway up,
13:56that's a much bigger span for them.
13:59That's why I was saying try and get a beam this way,
14:02where that wall is with joist hangers off.
14:04Jeez, they're taking a while.
14:06So, I've popped out to Beaumont Tiles.
14:08I've got to look at some tiles for the laundry
14:10and some flooring for the rest of the house, including Paulie's man cave.
14:13Are we doing a man cave or a man shed?
14:15A man chalet.
14:16Chalet, okay.
14:17That's why we're going to make it so gorgeous.
14:19I want it so that when his mates walk in, they go,
14:22I have never seen anything so flash in my life.
14:25Okay.
14:26How about Evo Natural Oak?
14:28I'll just pull it out for you.
14:30Yeah.
14:31Let me have a look.
14:32Yep, he's going to love it.
14:33Done.
14:34It doesn't look great, does.
14:35Until now, man sheds haven't been appreciated enough to deserve wood flooring.
14:39On behalf of every man shed in Australia, I just want to let you know, I am higher.
14:43The greatest thing is that we're going to bring an outdoor laundry inside.
14:47I'm going to put it in the store room.
14:48Yep.
14:49Just going to go the floor tile over here.
14:50Okay.
14:51And then because it's already got a lovely Queenslander look,
14:52so I'll go with that.
14:53Right.
14:54Let's do something a little bit darker, so it will hide a bit of the dirt,
14:57because if it's a laundry, muddy kind of footprints, all of that sort of stuff.
15:02Let's go with Omni Form Charcoal, textured, so it's got a bit of an anti-slip factor as well,
15:08so that if they're in the bathroom and there's water on the floor, they won't slip over.
15:12Yep.
15:13That's handy.
15:14It's great.
15:15You're trying to wash your undies.
15:16Great thing, Jess, it's in the BT Max range.
15:18Yep.
15:19And it's $39.95 Metro.
15:20That's good.
15:21$39.95, which means that we can afford to do the man shed and the laundry.
15:26Correct.
15:27That's unreal.
15:28So we've got ourselves a laundry.
15:29Yep.
15:30We've got ourselves the greatest man shed Australia's ever seen.
15:31Absolutely.
15:32The Vermont Max range can put charcoal tiles down on the laundry floor, non-slip.
15:36So it turns out now that not only are you going to have an indoor laundry that used
15:41to be an outdoor laundry that used to be a storeroom, you're not going to slip over
15:45either.
15:46That's fine.
15:47I'll ring you if I've got any problems.
15:48Yeah, great, Jess, no problem.
15:50I've got a lot of problems.
15:51So your phone will probably run off the hook.
15:53All right, I'll see you later.
15:54You're a legend.
15:55But if those boards run through, that's a bonus.
16:00Yeah, I know.
16:01The ceiling ones.
16:02Yeah.
16:03So we can just take that board completely, yeah?
16:05Take that board off, take that timber off there and then it's...
16:07It couldn't be that easy.
16:11We've got some news.
16:14It's good results.
16:15It's good.
16:16Yeah.
16:17It was a lot more open than we were expecting and there's no load-bearing walls there.
16:22So we'll be able to get her all out?
16:23Well, we have got one.
16:24One at the front, but a beam will fix that and it'll be up in the ceiling so you won't
16:27see it.
16:28So it's all coming down?
16:29Yeah.
16:30It's all coming down.
16:31That's unreal.
16:32It's exactly what I said in the first place.
16:33Oh, God.
16:34That's unbelievable how that happens.
16:35It's amazing.
16:36You should have been a chippy, mate.
16:37Anyway, right over.
16:38See ya.
16:39When my boys told me that we could knock down all the walls, I thought to myself, yeah,
16:43I know.
16:44Told you that hours ago.
16:46It's not much to it, really.
16:50Pretty open, closed case.
16:52This case, it's open.
16:54We're at the house that belonged to Brisbane matriarch Aunty Velda, who passed away two
17:04years ago.
17:05She was a tireless advocate, a volunteer in the community and a gorgeous soul.
17:10Mum had an impact on many people from all different walks of life.
17:14She did it for the love of people.
17:16This week, we are honouring her memory by preserving the house she once lived in.
17:20We're not a household where you need to call ahead and say, hey, do you mind if we stop
17:26by?
17:27That door is always open.
17:29As news spread of our gift back to Aunty Velda's family, we've had some visits from
17:33a bunch of rippers who have come to share their stories of Velda and support the project.
17:37Aunty Velda's obviously had a massive, massive impact on this area.
17:41We had a couple of visitors today to come and show their support.
17:45We had Wally Lewis and we had Jean Mahomes as well.
17:48So, yeah, it's been a big day.
17:50We got to meet Aunty Velda.
17:52You appreciate what a glorious person she is.
17:56Fantastic.
17:57Wonderful sort of support that she gave and she was a lot of fun to talk to.
18:02Yeah, she's a good friend of the former Origin greats.
18:05You know, she did the majority of our welcome to countries whenever she was called upon and
18:10she was a mad footy fan first and foremost.
18:13Wonderful lady and she's been sorely missed.
18:15They're just that excited to see what we're actually going to do for the family now.
18:19So, yeah, it was good.
18:20They weren't a huge fan of physical labour, but that's okay.
18:23That's how we keep our sporting stars great.
18:25You don't want them on there.
18:26You do not want Wally Lewis on the chainsaw.
18:28Do you know what I mean?
18:29He's got a lot of love to give.
18:30I think they've done enough.
18:31I think they've done enough.
18:32But I'm just saying, they walked out of that construction site with very clean clothes.
18:37That's right.
18:38They've won premierships.
18:39Like that?
18:40Yeah.
18:41Once again, the magnetism of love continues.
18:43From state of origin to origin energy.
18:45Big step.
18:46The boys rocked up with a gift that keeps on giving.
18:49Perfect.
18:50Got it?
18:51Yeah.
18:52The little beauty.
18:53Let there be light.
18:55With these models here, tell us a bit about them.
19:01Yeah, so we're putting 18 440 watt panels, which comes to about 8 kilowatts of potential power.
19:07The panels paired with a battery means that she's not going to be using power during the day from the grid.
19:12And all the excess power she generates during the day will be stored in a battery.
19:16So at night time when there isn't sun, she'll still have that power usage.
19:20Yeah, feel well.
19:21I love ya.
19:22Perfect.
19:23How good.
19:24With one old Queenslander getting a burst of energy, I've popped over to the healthy life tent to sort out the other old Queenslander.
19:43Yep, me.
19:44You're never too old to branch outside and look after yourself.
19:48What can you do for this?
19:50What can we do?
19:51I think straight up we need some oil-free moisturiser.
19:54I mean, it's looking a little bit on your face.
19:57On my face?
19:58Yeah.
19:59We're going to get a little bit of this in here, especially around this area.
20:02She gave me a couple of things and I did a moisturiser.
20:04I feel very soft in the face.
20:06I don't know what it was, but she kept loading me up.
20:09Take that whole box probably.
20:10Actually, I'll probably need that.
20:11Yep.
20:12So I don't know what she was actually getting at.
20:14I think we might need to have a few goes.
20:16I don't think this is too bad.
20:19Aha.
20:20There you go.
20:21Have a healthy day.
20:22I'm pretty right now anyway.
20:24Lea Munker couldn't miss out.
20:27Oh, we are looking and feeling great.
20:30And now, prime to tackle the walls.
20:33We're pulling these three walls down.
20:35We're not just knocking this down because we're going to reuse this VJ.
20:38We've got to take it down with care.
20:40All right.
20:41Well, let's get into it.
20:42Let's go.
20:43There you go.
20:44Look at the wall paper.
20:45Oh, cool.
20:46Look at that.
20:47Oh, I like it.
20:48Hey, Normie.
20:49I reckon our beams are working.
20:51Ow.
20:52Well done, Timothy.
20:53Great work.
20:54Great work.
20:59Hey, Normie.
21:00I reckon our beams are working.
21:04Well done, Timothy.
21:05Great work.
21:06So we pulled out the first wall and then the hallway wall.
21:11And we stood back and had a look and went, this area's massive.
21:12Yeah.
21:13And we were going to pull out the third one where the window was.
21:14But then we just thought, it's going to be too big.
21:16It's going to be ridiculous.
21:17So Lee and Tim and myself had a little bit of a meeting and we all came to the conclusion
21:21that the wall stays.
21:22So we're knocking out that one?
21:23No.
21:24We can't.
21:25No.
21:26We can't.
21:27No.
21:28No.
21:29No.
21:30No.
21:31No.
21:32No.
21:33No.
21:34No.
21:35No.
21:36No.
21:37No.
21:38No.
21:39No.
21:40No.
21:41No.
21:42No.
21:43No.
21:44No.
21:45No.
21:46No.
21:47No.
21:48No.
21:49No.
21:50We can't.
21:51How come?
21:52Is it loads very long?
21:53This is like an entrance there.
21:54Get rid of the window.
21:55Big screen tally.
21:57Because it looks like a room, you pull this out and then that next ceiling drops down.
22:02Architecture.
22:03It's going to look a bit...
22:04Architecture.
22:05Good architecture.
22:06Good architecture.
22:07And then where do you put the tally?
22:08You just walk straight in.
22:09There's no real entrance.
22:10Would you put it there?
22:11No.
22:12I couldn't believe it was like Dumb And Dumber and Dumbest.
22:15It's the extended version.
22:17version trying to work out if you could keep a wall that we'd already worked out that we were
22:20knocking down i don't understand it was up for discussion and then if you think if you were
22:25living in here i'd want my telly there it just makes it more homely because you just you come in
22:31you have an entrance and then you go around the corner and then you're there otherwise you're out
22:37basically on the street i just the wall had to stay what do you guys think we'll do whatever
22:43you want jess okay let's knock her over you could not get three worst guys in charge of design
22:53like monk is like oh but if it was my house we'll just tell me it's not your house the ceiling's
22:57different out there yeah great no it's not great you've got the vjs there that you can line the
23:04wall with i've not been part of the roof roof with i boycott she was adamant the wall was going and we
23:10tried to i wouldn't say make up things but we tried to make it very hard for her to get her own way
23:16this here these boards are going to stop right on this wall here so then there's going to be a gap
23:21all the way through and then the boards on the other side of that wall from that far out
23:26i'll run them that way nothing matches that's all bj board going down there yeah
23:32all right should i ask locky i'll ask locky because he's the rich investment guy let's get
23:37an independent hey i'll no talking do not be swayed by monka no so we've got all the boys banging on
23:46right oh you're good you're good you're good it's not a game of over 40s footy mate it's a building site
23:52so i needed to get someone that hadn't really been infiltrated into their little boys club yet you know
23:56isn't a kind of guy so i get locky because he's really classy and i'm like finally someone with
24:02a bit of common sense because at the moment i'm lonely i'm the only one that knows what i'm doing
24:07get a good look because it'll be the last time you see it it could be the last time the guys drag
24:12me into the uh into the front of the house and all they want to know about is do we get rid of this
24:16damn wall or not these run this way you can put some vj on there if you're more if it was overly
24:20important you've got the consistency i can i think i have my answer okay all right do it before you
24:28say it we'll all commit to do just whatever locky says and locky's not emotionally involved you gave
24:34your hands off him you could smell that it was going to be a stitcher we were gone for all money
24:44he's not going to fall for the neanderthal behavior he seems differently and that's what makes him the
24:49successful like he is because he's not an idiot open plan living is fantastic however there is
24:57such thing as too much space and it is nice to be able to have different zones in a house well this
25:02is not a zone and i think and i think that leaving the wall in creates the different zoning within the
25:09house five people in a room four of them don't know what they're talking about that'll do me that'll
25:27do me but that tv's not going on that wall ever
25:41i knew you guys were i knew this was a setup oh locky oh locky oh go yourself locky
25:51she'll probably have me cloning the toilets now or something but anyway i'll do that
25:55so the wall started i will clean toilets i'll do anything so yeah i'm very excited the wall stayed
26:00and i think it'll all work
26:03with 48 hours to go i forgot to put a couple of things in the budget okay we've added skipped in
26:26higher swimming and electrical plus 750 bucks to feed the team and i think i got off that lightly
26:32but the timber beams for the ceiling they cost twice as much as i budgeted for oops bringing it
26:38to a total of 9 890 bucks we're having a couple of budget issues right so i've done what every other
26:45good manager does make it someone else's problem so i bought in me ladies we already have some great
26:51furniture here to work with which we're very lucky for all of this i think needs to be utilized within
26:56the house at some capacity 110 bucks this is all free you've got all the uh tools in the world you've
27:02got a whole bunch of paint okay facebook free marketplace whatever okay you can have money left
27:07over i can feel it that's for ladies i feel like i'm watching me children blossom all right love you
27:15good luck okay i don't even know where to start this should be easy for mel in 92 she was voted most
27:21most popular talent at the logies compared to that pressure styling a place for 110 bucks will be a
27:27piece of cake i think we can do it okay
27:41so this is the vj panel we took off from inside that first wall we knocked out now we're going to line
27:46the back wall of the shed it actually gives us something that we can put nails in hooks in
27:50whatever and we can hang all the stuff off it so just to spruce that wall up instead of it just being
27:55tin and nails
27:58we'll also use a little bit of leftover vj board to make a waterfall laundry bench
28:18it'll look a million bucks but only cost about five this is the whole purpose of budget battlers right
28:24if you've got no money you've got to get creative and that's what we're doing it's
28:28amazing what you'll create when you've got no other options clinic baby this looks fantastic
28:34looks pretty good oh how do we do this clean up the bench tops sanded it undercoat it and we
28:40uh finished it in two pack polyurethane looks like a brand new kitchen but the biggest uh
28:45misconception about these is that they chip can you remember they say it's a cheap nasty version if
28:49you want to recover your bench tops with paint is that right nah if you look after this and be
28:53careful with it you'll get decades out of it yeah and it looks good makes a different it's like a
28:58brand new kitchen this one is done in a high gloss and you can get it in satin as well you want the
29:02satin didn't you i did want the satin but we didn't have any glosses it's the budget battle away we'll
29:08take whatever's on the shelf looks beautiful done well thank you all right good job really good job
29:13see you and the love and generosity that normally bounces off the walls at auntie welder's house
29:19continues humankind choose someone who's gone above and beyond on the work side and rewards them with
29:25five thousand dollars and it's generally to the person most in need jess as you know humankind we're
29:31all about restoring faith in the kindness of humanity and yeah we're on the hunt for australia's
29:35kindest person there's one person that stood out they put their hand up for every job they've you know
29:41no complaints they've volunteered their time to be here and no one was our second choice
29:52so on behalf of humankind we would like to give this week's kindness hero five thousand dollars
30:00to an absolute legend james
30:12this like saves my life at the moment oh thank you so much like pleasure mate yeah thank you
30:22i really do appreciate coming in every night and having people like just tell me that i'm doing
30:33a good job because it makes me feel like i'm actually doing something that's worth it yeah like this place
30:38is great you're a tribe and yeah it means it means a whole lot to me it means a lot could not have gone
30:46to a better bloke and thanks humankind absolute champions that could do with a bit of a touch out
30:54don't you think i actually like it reversed i agree at this point we have pretty much got all the
31:01furniture and we're just coming now to all the little decor items do you want the boys to put that
31:07over there now we just hope that when we bring all the bits together it's all gonna match thank you
31:12it was so lovely the kids got into some of the flooring gave a hand
31:19we do have a bit of a laugh and we give each other a bit of whatever i can't wait either
31:23but it's what budget battlers is all about i feel like your tongs are very similar to your work tools
31:27very clean it's bringing together people that have never met each other
31:34we'll catch up every now and again and you come together just to have one of those old-fashioned
31:39pulsing moments no devices just everyone helping out i loved it
31:56it's our final day at auntie welder's house in brisbane and it's all hands on deck to get this
32:00place ready in time for the family's arrival hey where are the nail boys and people are coming
32:09from near and far to support this beautiful family and its legacy even the guys from eureka furniture
32:14they donate an incredible outdoor setting for the back deck eureka furniture was founded by my parents
32:20and we specialize in solid and reclaimed timbers and quality furniture so when we heard about this cause
32:26in this family it made sense for us to get on board that's right five days hard-working volunteers
32:33ten thousand dollars and some ripper donations for some beautiful people and companies who just want
32:38to be a part of something good reject shop how good's living this is actually a really cool couch from kogan

33:20it's something that you can only feel if you're if you're in it we've finished and to celebrate the
33:30occasion auntie valda's family and friends have come from all over just in time for their return of
33:36luana and paulie along with their sister leilani and brother adrian here they are
33:43welcome home we are so so grateful that you allowed us to be a part of your life for the last five
34:03days luana how are you feeling i'm feeling very nervous until i turned up today i'd never even thought
34:11about it but now it's very nerve-wracking we see that there's been a lot of painting happening
34:17that was that was about it it was just pain
34:20not much more we hope that we have created a space for you to to honor the memory of the house
34:28but also to celebrate the future of what new beginnings are on behalf of the entire budget
34:33battler team let's have a look at your budget battled house the memories in that house was in a
34:43structure of a house like it was and i was a bit concerned that changing that structure might have
34:50raised some of the memories i hope you love it go on open it up
35:04oh my god
35:23oh my god

37:43this is amazing
37:50normally made these with the same vj that he took out of the wall of the middle so that we didn't waste
37:55happening this is just beautiful this is something that we wanted but i really didn't think it would
38:01happen i just want to find dirty clothes just to wash now the painting the floors the floor is made
38:09a lot of people want the high-end stuff you don't have to go high-end for it to be high-end the next

39:11thousand thousand that's unheard of good oh mom's wedding dress look at your bed paulie
39:24oh my god take a seat
39:41this is so flash see that sun over there
39:46that's going to pay your power bills pretty much forever how then put up a whole bunch of solar panels
39:52on your roof that is capable of pretty much supplying everything that you need to run flat
39:57so not only have you got solar they've also installed a battery system at the front when the
40:03power lines go down you're still functional you're kidding no not kidding you want to go have a look
40:09at your new man cave let's go all right let's go then yes

41:01i thought i actually walked into a rebel sports store actually you know they've got the tv up
41:13there they've got the jerseys hanging up they've got the lights and got the power to the shed so i
41:18don't have to run the extension cord to underneath the house anymore deadly real deadly absolutely truly
41:25blessed we feel so incredibly blessed too paulie and we're so relieved that you love it we love you
41:37but has it added any value to the property we know the family won't sell it it's too precious

42:05thousand dollars for this entire house wow okay to fix up the whole house yes you're gonna doubt
42:10we aren't we aren't you i am doubting you i've seen a lot of uh renovations in my time and based on
42:16the budget i um i actually don't believe her no only five days later he's returned to see if the
42:2210 grand we've put into the place has actually given the family a little nest egg wow this is actually
42:30incredible darling what have you done this is incredible i know honestly for ten thousand dollars
42:40that's not what i was expecting this on my side of the world would take three four five months to do
42:46and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars i would say this has increased the property by at least
42:52one hundred to two hundred thousand dollars you've done an amazing job oh my god i was i was amazed
43:01you guys have all done an incredible job you're magicians well you wouldn't believe it if i told
43:06you not only did we have a magical week we were right on budget with the extra beams for the ceiling
43:11to open up the living room bringing the laundry inside for luana running the power to the shed for
43:16paulie and sprucing up the place the total spend was 10 grand exactly not even five cents over told
43:23you i was good at maths my best budget battler bargain has to be the kitchen bench painting that
43:30has made it look like a brand new kitchen and it cost us less than 400 bucks i'm going with the bench
43:36too jess my best budget battler bargain has to be the recycle vj board we used on the laundry bench
43:44we're so honored to be part of the energy of this house it has been truly life-changing this house
43:50is all about memories let's go and start some new memories in paulie's coolest man cave ever
43:57that was much about this and we'll see you next time
44:03this renovation of this house really reminded us that it's all about family
44:07without the love and the heart of the connection
44:19it's just the thing with the roof isn't it
44:32so
