00:00I'm Luke McFarlane.
00:10I'm an actor, design enthusiast, and a woodworker.
00:15When I'm not on set filming movies,
00:17I'm pursuing a lifelong passion for carpentry and home renovation,
00:21a skill that's been passed down through my family.
00:26Together with my friend, interior designer Olivia Westbrooks,
00:29we will meet all kinds of families
00:32and breathe new life into their favorite spaces that have lost their way.
00:37We did good.
00:38It looks great.
00:41Our designs will honor family history.
00:44Wow.
00:45While making room for the present and the future.
00:48This is fantastic.
00:51We're here to restore what matters most.
00:56Because I believe memories should be built to last.
00:59And home is where the heart is.
01:13Olivia!
01:14Hi!
01:15Hi!
01:16So good to see you!
01:17Good to see you!
01:18Great to see this house in person.
01:20Right?
01:21It's so gorgeous.
01:22It's a classic Victorian.
01:24All that gingerbread and all that detail.
01:26Oh my gosh.
01:27Can't wait to see what it looks like on the inside.
01:29Absolutely.
01:30Let's go.
01:31Let's go.
01:32Yes.
01:33Oh, what a fun doorbell.
01:34Hi.
01:35Welcome.
01:36Hunter, hi.
01:37How are you?
01:38So nice to meet you.
01:39Nice to meet you.
01:40I'm a southern hugger.
01:41Oh my gosh.
01:42Hi.
01:43Brittany?
01:44Nice to meet you.
01:45Thank you for having us.
01:47Wow.
01:48Look at this.
01:51We are looking at a classic Victorian.
01:55This is one of the best examples I have ever been in.
01:58It was Hunter's grandmother's house.
02:00This house was built in 1897 as a Victorian style house.
02:05My grandmother purchased this home in 2008.
02:07She lived here for roughly about 13 years.
02:09And then we purchased it in 2021.
02:12I grew up here as a teenager.
02:14It's great to see and have those memories in this house,
02:17but also now we're starting our own memories in our own family.
02:20That's right.
02:21One important thing about living here in the house is really preserving our family history
02:24and continuing that legacy with our kids.
02:26I really do hope my kids that one day will own this house
02:29and continue that for their kids as well.
02:31So you always knew your grandmother to be the person that was interested in old homes?
02:35Yes.
02:36She was really involved in restoring and renovating old houses.
02:39Okay.
02:40So this is actually the second home she purchased here in Social Circle and restored.
02:45Our families have been here for several generations in the area.
02:48Social Circle is a small knit community.
02:51Everyone looks out for one another, which is something that's very important to us,
02:55especially raising two young boys.
02:57We have one four-year-old and one six-month-old, so keeping a house that still keeps its authentic heritage
03:04of being old along with making it a place for our children to safely play is very crucial.
03:10My grandmother was a collector of China.
03:14She loved to collect antiques.
03:16She loved to preserve the true nature of a historic home.
03:20And one of the big things she did here was she had everything staged as it would have been in 1897.
03:26When she had this house, she didn't have young children.
03:29So how do we preserve the historic nature of this home and able to raise two young children in here?
03:34We can't have a museum.
03:35Well, there's a responsibility to an old house too, because I'm looking around at this woodwork here,
03:39which has lasted over 100 years, and you don't see nicks and carvings and things on it,
03:46so you want to make sure that it stays that way.
03:48But you want the kids to also be kids and be able to touch things.
03:51But this is all in just such incredible condition.
03:55How much did you guys have to do when you moved in here?
03:57When we moved in, we painted.
03:58We moved some things around, but the structure of the home is all the same as when she was here.
04:02We left all the wood and trim original.
04:05Okay, well, I'm delighted to see this.
04:07I personally think if it has made it this long without getting painted, why put paint on it now?
04:12Right, exactly.
04:13Hunter's very pro-natural wood. I'm very pro-painted.
04:16So that's kind of where we differ.
04:19I would like to paint some parts of the home that have the dark wood just because I feel like it would lighten it up.
04:24I love it, don't get me wrong, but I just feel like it would bring a breath of fresh air to them.
04:28I'm going to stand with Hunter.
04:30I'm with Brittany on this one. I really do feel like a fresh coat of paint can really modernize a really beautiful historic house like her.
04:38Absolutely.
04:39Do you have any favorite colors that you like to work with?
04:41I tend to gravitate towards blues and greens.
04:44Yeah, it's a great color palette.
04:46Well, we definitely need your help because we are just at a standstill.
04:50We have no idea where to go from here, so we are very glad that both of you are here.
04:55So it was a little difficult at first having the idea of moving in here.
05:00You know, this is always known as Hunter's grandmother's house.
05:03So in my mind, it's remained his grandmother's home.
05:06I always want to make sure to honor his grandmother, but there is some struggles with making it my own home.
05:12I don't feel like it truly reflects who we are. I don't feel like our heart is in the home just yet.
05:19And I would love for us to bring that aspect into the home.
05:23Why don't you show us the rest of the house?
05:25We'd love to. Yeah.
05:26Right this way. Great.
05:27Okay, so we're kind of stepping into a different vibe here.
05:33Yeah, so this is the mudroom is what we're calling it.
05:35Yeah.
05:36This is the door we use the most.
05:37It leads right out to our vehicles.
05:39Uh-huh.
05:40It's very cluttered and needs some organizational magic to happen to it.
05:44This is Main Street.
05:45This is. This is high traffic.
05:46This is high traffic.
05:47This is high traffic.
05:48Everybody on their way in and out. Okay.
05:50You know, we have the front of the house, but this is where we live is in the back of the house.
05:53Kind of getting the sense that this was maybe not original to the house?
05:56No, we don't know when it was built.
05:58We're kind of estimating it in the 40s.
06:00This is a great example of a space that's missing the Victorian charm like the rest of the house has.
06:07And I have no idea how to incorporate that.
06:10I see that we're repeating another theme with using antiques in this room as well.
06:14Yes, absolutely.
06:15Yes.
06:16I think it's very important to include some of those historical family pieces.
06:19You should have seen this when my grandmother had it.
06:21It was full of antiques.
06:23Quite the collector.
06:24She was quite the collector.
06:25Well, the good news is you have this incredible big window here.
06:30One of my favorite features in the old house.
06:32It is a window bench.
06:35Does that lift?
06:36It does lift up.
06:37There's some storage under there.
06:38There's nothing under there.
06:39Oh, yeah.
06:40But yeah.
06:41It does feel bright and cheery.
06:43You have a lot of light in here.
06:45It is very white, which is so different from the rest of the house.
06:49It may be an opportunity to inject some color, some of those blues and those greens that Brittany talked about.
06:54Yeah, that's a good idea.
06:55All right.
06:56Yes, the only color we currently have in here are these lovely drapes that were also passed down from Hunter's grandmother.
07:02So I wouldn't say it's my style exactly.
07:04Victorian architecture is kind of, by definition, allowed to be a little bit of a mix of everything.
07:09So we don't have any super hard, strict rules about stuff.
07:12And that's, I think, to our benefit.
07:14We can celebrate the eclectic.
07:15Well, we've talked a lot about the mudroom.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I'm really anxious to get into this kitchen.
07:19Absolutely.
07:20Let's go.
07:21Okay.
07:22So here's the kitchen.
07:23Yeah.
07:24All right.
07:25All right.
07:26This is where we share meals together.
07:27This is where we talk about our day.
07:28This is where we talk about our struggles and our triumphs.
07:33So this is really the heart of the home.
07:36And how do you take the space like this and transform it into something that honors the past?
07:41Believe it or not, I actually met Hunter's grandmother for the very first time in this kitchen, sitting at this table.
07:48At this actual table?
07:49No way.
07:50Yes.
07:51This is a true story.
07:52Did you think, at that time, that this would be your kitchen one day?
07:56Not in my wildest dreams.
07:57Yeah.
07:58It's just a very full circle moment.
08:00I actually have some photos for you guys.
08:03These are us growing up.
08:04Oh, look at you guys.
08:06Goodness.
08:07Look at your babies.
08:09Right.
08:10Oh, my goodness.
08:12We met sophomore year of high school.
08:15And we've been married for about six years.
08:17So being high school sweethearts, I feel like it's a very special thing.
08:20We've really got to see each other grow as individuals together.
08:24Oh, y'all are so cute.
08:26You must have made quite the impression on Grandma.
08:28I think so.
08:29Wow.
08:30And there she is.
08:31Yep.
08:32Hunter, is that you?
08:33That is me.
08:34What?
08:35Yes, look at you.
08:36That's such a special photo to have.
08:38Oh, thank you.
08:39That's actually from one of the rooms in the house.
08:41So this is the way it would have looked.
08:43When she had it decorated.
08:44Oh.
08:45So see, the antiques and, yes.
08:46I am getting it now.
08:47Lots of antiques.
08:48All right.
08:49That's right.
08:50And how much time do you spend in the kitchen?
08:51A lot.
08:52A lot of time.
08:53This is, I would say, the heart of the home.
08:54This is the heart of the home.
08:55Yeah.
08:56As Southerners, we gather around food, and that's kind of where our, you know, entertaining
09:00comes from.
09:01Yep.
09:02Along with having kids.
09:03So preparing snacks, lunches, breakfast, dinners.
09:06I mean, we are in here nonstop.
09:09Uh, the stove.
09:10Does it require you putting wood into it?
09:13It actually does not.
09:14This is actually a modern stove.
09:17Oh, look at that.
09:18That's okay.
09:19Where do you put pots?
09:21You don't have a piece of counter beside it?
09:23No.
09:24We have very limited counter space.
09:26So it's all stored in our cabinets.
09:28Wherever we can find a place, we just kind of make it work.
09:31Well, it's beautiful.
09:32And I'm glad to know that you don't have to kind of chop wood and put it in there and
09:35stuff like that.
09:36I'm glad also.
09:37See, that's something that's so special.
09:39I mean, your grandmother cooked on that stove.
09:41She did.
09:42And if she was anything like my grandmother, she probably threw down in this kitchen.
09:44Yeah.
09:45She cooked a good bit.
09:46I was well fed.
09:47She took good care of me.
09:48So some of the favorite recipes were the spaghetti.
09:51I remember coming in here smelling the spaghetti sauce.
09:55Have you made the spaghetti?
09:56I have not.
09:57Okay.
09:58He said, I need to learn.
09:59But I should.
10:00I need to.
10:01I don't mean that as a chap.
10:02Yeah.
10:03I can't make it like his grandmother can, so.
10:06In your dream scenario, how would this kitchen look?
10:09How would it function for you?
10:10I have always wanted an island in here.
10:14I just feel like that's the biggest thing.
10:16And then on top of that, just having a place for everything.
10:20It's a common theme with this back area.
10:22There's not much storage.
10:23There's a way to sort of respect the historical elements of this house without making it feel old fashioned and not contemporary.
10:31There's definitely a way to honor that history.
10:33Yes.
10:34But make it fun.
10:35You all are a fun couple.
10:36I want to interject some of that personality into your home.
10:38Absolutely.
10:39We would love that.
10:40Yeah, we would love that.
10:41Won't say that we definitely don't have a challenge ahead of us.
10:43I mean, it's a little bit of everything happening in here.
10:45Yes.
10:46Right?
10:47We want to find a way to make it make sense for them.
10:48Right.
10:49And make it honor granted.
10:50Right.
10:51Exactly.
10:52We've got some ideas up our sleeves.
10:53We have a few tricks.
10:54But now we need you guys to leave for a bit.
10:56Thank you so much.
10:57We're getting out of your hair.
11:05I am a bit nervous.
11:06It is really hard to hand your home off to somebody and trust them.
11:13I'm excited in the fact that it's going to be our new space.
11:16And I'm really keen to see what Luke and Olivia preserved moving forward.
11:21This is beautiful.
11:23We reach a chapter now that it's time to turn that page.
11:27It's time to make it our home.
11:28Great.
11:29All right.
11:30Just put it in the hallway for now.
11:31I tell you, I really do have a lot of faith in Luke and Olivia and what they're going to do.
11:35They really take that to heart.
11:37Whew.
11:46Hey, Luke.
11:47I love this house.
11:48It's so beautiful.
11:49Every single time I come up on this porch, I think, this is not a bad office.
11:56I love all the detail.
11:57I love all the wood.
11:58But I understand our assignment.
11:59We've got to update this a little bit.
12:01It's clear to me that Hunter and Brittany are going to need an upgraded mudroom and kitchen.
12:07Space planning and storage is a huge problem in this house.
12:12Brittany talks about how she doesn't have enough surface space and places for people to sit when they come over.
12:16So I think dropping one big island right in the middle of the kitchen would be fantastic for them.
12:21So we know they have this lovely stove.
12:23It's fantastic.
12:24I'm glad you said that.
12:25I have an idea about the stove.
12:26Yes.
12:27It's kind of an old-fashioned look, but a butcher block table.
12:29I love that idea.
12:30I think it's something that I can make pretty easily.
12:32A nice maple top, put a drawer in there, just a little bit more storage.
12:36And somewhere to put a pot after you take it off the stove.
12:39Yes.
12:40I think that checks off a lot of boxes.
12:41Great.
12:42So speaking of wood, let's talk about it.
12:45Brittany and Hunter have a little back and forth about stain versus painted.
12:48Here we are.
12:49I know.
12:50And I felt like you and I kind of took sides there.
12:53Yeah, a little bit.
12:54Look, the house has incredible vintage wood that has been untouched with paint.
12:58These cabinets, however, they're contemporary.
13:00They're modern.
13:01I don't think we need to worry about covering up that wood with paint.
13:04So I will let you have those with your paint.
13:06You're so gracious.
13:07The kids need an area in the kitchen that is all their own.
13:10So I'd love to find a little bench that's just the right size for them.
13:14I would love to add an island right in the middle of the space with plenty of storage
13:18and lots of seating for family meals and large holiday gatherings.
13:22And we can add even more counter space by adding my custom butcher block table to live beside that stove.
13:27Now let's talk character.
13:29We're taking a big risk by adding that bold wallpaper to the kitchen.
13:33But it has those blues and those greens that Brittany really loves.
13:36And it's also a nod to the Victorian era that we keep talking about.
13:40So I think it'll work.
13:42And we'll honor Hunter's Nana by adding some of the antiques and heirlooms to the space.
13:47Let's go to the mudroom.
13:50It certainly doesn't feel like the Victorian house that's attached to the front of this house.
13:56A mudroom without storage is kind of a useless hallway.
13:59You know, everything is just so bright and white.
14:02The ceilings are really high in there, but it doesn't feel like it's connected to the rest of the house.
14:06So in the mudroom, we have a clutter issue.
14:09I want to bring in a big piece of furniture like a wardrobe or a hutch and put it in the back.
14:14Under the stairs, I want to add something special for the kids, like a secret cubbyhole play area.
14:20And at the front of the room, we can cut down on some of that shoe pile by adding a drawer underneath the window bench.
14:26I want to freshen up the walls with some color to bring some warmth in that space.
14:30It's really harsh right now with that white beadboard.
14:33And some new furniture near the door will add even more storage.
14:37Plus, we'll give the walls under the stairs a fresh coat of paint to really hide that secret cubbyhole you're going to make.
14:43Hunter wants so badly for Brittany to feel comfortable in this space and that it feels like her home.
14:48Absolutely.
14:49I think that's going to be one of our biggest uphill battles is making sure that we pay respect to the home and to grandma's legacy, but also make this a place that Brittany calls home herself.
14:59Absolutely.
15:00And that she feels proud of and that represents who she is.
15:02Okay, but most importantly, do you think Brittany's going to like it?
15:07The best part of any clean out is finding the hidden gems and using them for inspiration.
15:22And because Hunter's Nana had such an amazing collection of antiques, it doesn't take long before we hit the jackpot.
15:29I found some of grandma's treasures.
15:32Quite a collection too.
15:33I feel like, you know, they talk so much about all the sort of beautiful stuff that granny had and sort of not knowing what to do with it.
15:40These are beautiful.
15:42A little blue and white.
15:43Yeah, I think it might even be valuable.
15:45That wouldn't surprise me.
15:46It seems like grandma had a lot of valuable things.
15:49Absolutely.
15:50I feel like the most classic thing to do is just, you know, put it right up here, place of prominence above the fireplace.
15:56I like it here.
15:57Okay.
15:58We can have the fireplace have its moment.
15:59Uh-huh.
16:00But then what do you think about this wall here for something?
16:03Well, you get the nice light.
16:04I just want to remind you that we were going to do something down here for the kids so they could be in the kitchen with Brittany.
16:10All right, so.
16:11But there's still space kind of here, maybe.
16:14So let's take a look at the wallpaper.
16:17Whew.
16:19Lots of different color.
16:20Okay, I just do want to point something out to you though.
16:23Just keep that up there and then put this here.
16:26Is this a lot going on?
16:28I mean, it could be, but it's Victorian design.
16:32Remember, keep that in mind.
16:33Yes.
16:34And that era had a lot going on all the time.
16:35Yeah, but let's not forget what Brittany said.
16:37She was like, I'm kind of interested in doing something a little cleaner, a little fresher.
16:40I don't know.
16:41I kind of like it.
16:42So if we put this here, we can do kind of linear, big to small, maybe the teacups at the top, or maybe, I don't know, small to big, but just kind of all in a row.
16:49Yeah, we could.
16:50That would be the more traditional and even maybe expected way to install china on the wall.
16:57Ah, I see.
16:58I'm thinking jazz it up a little bit.
16:59Okay.
17:00Maybe something organic, maybe something that spills over, I don't know, the window perhaps, or even this cased opening here.
17:07Okay.
17:08Think about it.
17:09It's almost like a dance.
17:10Yeah, yeah, a little bit of movement.
17:11It's a traditional idea in an unexpected way.
17:14Okay, I see.
17:15You're mixing things up.
17:16This is this Victorian thing we're talking about.
17:17That's right.
17:18Everything kind of can come together.
17:19I got to put these down because I'm afraid I'm going to break them.
17:22Okay.
17:23I'm going with you because we have that banquette going in the corner.
17:26Yes.
17:27I think it has enough going on in that wall already.
17:29Okay.
17:30And we don't want the kids to damage any of this stuff, right?
17:32So fireplace.
17:33Fireplace it is.
17:34Okay.
17:35All right.
17:36All right.
17:37Okay.
17:38So we have a plan with the trainer.
17:39Okay.
17:40We're going to go outside.
17:41We're going to finish packing these dishes.
17:42Okay.
17:51Outside my workstation, I'm getting to work on the butcher block table for Hunter and Brittany's kitchen.
17:57The block will sit on 30 inch legs painted to match a kitchen cabinet.
18:10And the stand will be 36 inches.
18:12Counter height.
18:13Very, oh, very smooth.
18:15Very smooth, but also very, very heavy, very hard.
18:18That's why we make butcher blocks out of it.
18:20I love the smell of freshly cut wood.
18:22Reminds me of college.
18:24Really?
18:25Yes.
18:26I took a woodworking course one semester.
18:28So I really appreciate this kind of stuff.
18:30The nice thing about a butcher block table is it's going to be real thick.
18:33So it's going to have a really heavy kind of permanent quality to it.
18:36The other thing about butcher block is that it's really important to use the end grain.
18:41Okay.
18:42Now, do you know the difference between the end grain and the side grain?
18:44I might have an idea.
18:46Here's our board of wood.
18:47Yes.
18:48Got it?
18:49This is obviously the way you get dusty.
18:52Just a little bit.
18:53You know what they call sawdust, right?
18:54No.
18:55Carpenter fairy dust.
18:56Oh, well in that case.
18:58So we got a board here.
19:00This is going with the grain here.
19:03Your end grain is this part right here.
19:06It's on the ends.
19:07That's right.
19:08Self-explanatory.
19:09And we really like to make butcher blocks out of end grain,
19:12because you know when you're constantly cutting into it all the time,
19:15the end grain isn't going to show your knife marks all the time.
19:18Oh.
19:19So especially if it's a piece of furniture sitting there.
19:21I didn't realize that.
19:22The end grain is also really nice because when you put the oil on it,
19:25it sucks it right in.
19:26Uh-huh.
19:27It's kind of like the straws of the plant are on the end here,
19:29so it'll really take in the oil in a nice way.
19:32That also means we have to come up with a decision about how the end grain is going to be featured.
19:37So what we got here is kind of like a parquet design.
19:40Yes.
19:41The other option would be to do something sort of like this.
19:45It's almost like a brick pattern, and it would be little slices like this all the way across.
19:50All right.
19:51Since we're going for a heftier look on this butcher block, we want something substantial.
19:55Yep.
19:56I like the idea of this parquet design instead.
19:59Yeah.
20:00The most important part about this is that we're providing them more surface space,
20:03which is what they don't have right now.
20:05Yeah, that's true.
20:06So let's see what you can do.
20:07Okay.
20:08Okay.
20:09I'll take my lemonade inside.
20:10I'll get back to it.
20:11You keep working in the heat.
20:13Have fun.
20:14Thanks for the drink.
20:15You're welcome.
20:18Thank you, man.
20:19You're welcome.
20:20Good job.
20:22Thanks.
20:24Thank you, man.
20:25But I know Hunter is still worried that painting over the cabinet doors
20:28will take away from preserving this historic home.
20:30So I've called in a local resident and historian
20:33to get us all on the same page, once and for all.
20:37Dina here is the head of the Historical Society here in Social Circle.
20:41Oh, fantastic!
20:42So I thought you might be able to help answer some questions about the house,
20:46but there's something extra special about Dina.
20:49She was a friend of your grandmother's.
20:52She was one of my best best friends.
20:54Yeah, she was, yep.
20:55And I brought some pictures, too.
20:56This is the house probably in about 1999 or 2000.
21:01Oh, my goodness.
21:01You couldn't even really see it.
21:03No!
21:03It's hidden behind the trees.
21:05Okay, well, these pictures are wonderful,
21:07but the real reason we really wanted you here
21:09was to help us settle this important debate.
21:12Olivia and I have been talking a lot about it.
21:15Just a little.
21:16Oh, a lot.
21:17Because we want the house to retain its value,
21:20and I think with this home being historic,
21:22retaining its value means honoring where I came from
21:25and not trying to erase anything.
21:26We've noticed in the house there's a lot of stained wood,
21:28and we've noticed there's a lot of painted wood.
21:30I guess we've just got to figure out
21:31what is historically appropriate for the Victorian era.
21:34So we've got two different opinions here.
21:37So the judge can rule.
21:38You need to state your case.
21:41Hunter, you don't want to touch the wood.
21:43No.
21:44Once you paint it, you can never get that wood back.
21:46That's a good point.
21:46Number two is to maintain the historic nature of the house
21:49and make sure that whatever we decide to do with it
21:51is to the period,
21:53that we're not throwing away the history piece of that.
21:55Brittany, state your case.
21:57So my case is obviously to modernize,
22:01you know, make it feel like my own space.
22:03These obviously are not...
22:05Original.
22:05Original.
22:06Okay.
22:06So I don't think there's any harm in painting these
22:11with it not being original to the home.
22:13These would not, of course, have been the original cabinets.
22:15Right.
22:15But the plate rack is very old.
22:17Oh.
22:18So that was something I would say you wouldn't want to paint.
22:21It's kind of like a primitive design.
22:22And the mantle is probably original.
22:24With that in mind, with your opinions in mind...
22:28No pressure.
22:30No pressure.
22:31No pressure.
22:31What are we allowed to do?
22:33No pressure.
22:48Wood.
22:49Do we paint it?
22:50Do we keep it stained?
22:51What are we allowed to do?
22:53Well, the heir of this house,
22:54both wood or paint,
22:55are a period to the Victorian and the Queen Anne style.
22:57But back then it was lead paint.
23:00Paint was very expensive.
23:01Yeah.
23:01They did the paint so that it showed people that,
23:05oh, you're wealthy.
23:06Oh.
23:07Yeah.
23:08Another thing about the Victorian and the Queen Anne style
23:10is it's very eclectic.
23:11The more stuff you could put in a room
23:13and the more finishes you could decorate with, the better.
23:16Because I was showing that you...
23:18Had some money.
23:18Had some money.
23:19Am I picking up on,
23:20and that's what the Victorian style was all about?
23:22A little flex.
23:23A little flex.
23:24Yeah, Victorian flex.
23:25Yeah, it's true though.
23:26It was like fabrics, wallpapers, different patterns.
23:30That's right.
23:30Yeah.
23:31Paint.
23:31Yes.
23:31Now, Hunter, how does that make you feel
23:33knowing that both stain and painted
23:36were both of the period
23:38and appropriate for that time?
23:40Do you feel now you're a little bit more comfortable
23:42with Brittany getting some painted?
23:44I feel a little bit more comfortable
23:46with the, you know, with that answer.
23:48That both was in the period.
23:50Thank you so much for helping us solve that riddle.
23:53Thank you, Dina.
23:53It's so good to see you.
24:07Question is, can you, you know,
24:09zip cut this or something like that?
24:11Oh, yeah.
24:11We're working on our little hiding hole space.
24:13Yes.
24:14Yeah, we're about to cut into these very old walls
24:17and see what we find.
24:18So we're hanging it above the baseboard?
24:21Yeah.
24:21This will remain.
24:22Yeah.
24:22Okay.
24:23Because traditionally,
24:24a door would be installed
24:25right at the bottom of the baseboard, right?
24:28Yeah, but this is, you know,
24:29like Brian was saying,
24:30it's fun for the kids to crawl over.
24:31It kind of feels like a special door.
24:33So here or here.
24:38Oh, actually, the more I do that,
24:39I start to think that I'm going to be like...
24:41So we'll drop it down
24:45into the baseboard just a little bit.
24:48Yeah.
24:49Yeah, let's do it.
24:49All right.
24:50Okay.
24:50All right.
24:51What about the finish
24:52on this door?
24:54Now remember,
24:55Hunter does like stained wood.
24:56Mm-hmm.
24:57And this is an opportunity for us
24:59to add some of that back into this space.
25:01So is it worth it on this door?
25:04I'm going to settle this for you right now.
25:06We got to paint this.
25:07It just feels completely right.
25:08Okay.
25:08But do we want to kind of showcase it
25:11with a sort of pop of a dark color
25:12or do we want to make it disappear into the wall?
25:15My vote is going to be disappear
25:17since it's a hiding hole.
25:19Yeah.
25:19I don't know.
25:20I think there's something also classy
25:21about having like a nice dark door.
25:23I think that's a cool idea too.
25:25Okay.
25:25So I'll go back to the design board
25:27with that
25:28to see what we should do
25:29with the paint color.
25:31But we have decided
25:32we're painting.
25:33Yeah.
25:34I think so, definitely.
25:34Let's open up those walls.
25:35Let's go.
25:36Okay.
25:36Let's open it.
25:56Ready?
25:57One, two, three.
26:00Oh, my goodness.
26:01Yeah, we have our opening.
26:02Watch this.
26:04Oh.
26:06Perfect.
26:07Yeah, it's pretty fun, right?
26:08That's great.
26:09Yeah.
26:10This can work for mommies too, right?
26:11Oh, yeah, that's true.
26:13Put a bottle of wine in here.
26:14Here, there we go.
26:15No, just to cook.
26:16Don't tell my kids I'm here.
26:17Just to cook, yeah.
26:18Bye-bye.
26:18Bye.
26:19Bye.
26:32Outside in my shop,
26:33I've made good progress
26:34on the butcher block table.
26:35But for this next part,
26:37I'm going to need a little muscle.
26:40To make the block,
26:41dozens of six-inch-long maple blocks
26:43were clamped and glued together tightly,
26:45and the legs are almost ready to install.
26:48This block will stand at counter height,
26:50perfect for chopping broccoli
26:51or stashing hot pots fresh off the stove.
26:55You want to get kind of dusty?
26:57Do I want to get dusty?
26:59Do you want to do a little sanding?
27:00No?
27:01Heck yeah.
27:02All right.
27:03Now this thing's going to want
27:04to really move on you.
27:05Okay.
27:05You're going to really have to hold down.
27:06All right.
27:07Actually, do me a favor.
27:08Hit the backing.
27:09You want to start?
27:23All right.
27:24Okay.
27:24Easy.
27:25Easy peasy.
27:26Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
27:29Yeah.
27:30Try to hold it.
27:31Hold it down.
27:32I got it.
27:33Okay.
27:35You did good!
27:36Man, what a whirlwind.
27:38Yeah.
27:38This thing has some power.
27:39It does have some power.
27:40I'm sweating.
27:41That was a workout.
27:42You also get a sense of how long
27:43it's going to take to make
27:43extra special smoothies.
27:44I do, but I can already feel
27:46how smooth it is.
27:47All right.
27:47Well, let me get at this
27:48because I'm going to spend a...
27:49Yeah, I'm going to leave you to it.
27:50Awesome.
28:12In Hunter and Brittany's mudroom,
28:23the biggest issue was the relentless pile of shoes
28:25that always seemed to build up at the door.
28:27So I'm adding a drawer to keep this family
28:29and this entranceway organized.
28:31Yeah, of course.
28:32All right.
28:46Moment of truth.
28:48I got faith in you.
28:49Oh, yeah.
28:51Oh, yeah.
28:52Come on.
28:53Yeah, let's see.
28:54Yeah.
28:54That's excellent.
28:57That is a piece of very functional
28:59cabinetry.
29:01That's great.
29:02Hey, Olivia.
29:17Hey, Luke.
29:18Getting that hardware off.
29:20All the fun stuff.
29:21Ready to paint.
29:22Yeah.
29:22I wanted to show you something.
29:24You've been up to something.
29:25Well, remember that buffet
29:26that was in the front there?
29:28Yeah.
29:28I opened up the top drawer
29:29and there were all these old recipes.
29:31Oh, my God.
29:32That's so cool.
29:33That's the spaghetti sauce.
29:34Nana's famous spaghetti sauce.
29:36Look at that.
29:37Yeah.
29:37And it's even got spaghetti sauce splashed on it.
29:39These are cool.
29:40I just love the idea
29:41that these little paper cards
29:43have lasted this long,
29:44that that is Nana's handwriting.
29:46We would never want to get rid of that.
29:47No.
29:48I don't know.
29:49It just kind of feels like,
29:50in so many ways,
29:50what we're trying to do here,
29:51trying to hold on to things from the past,
29:53honor them, respect them.
29:54And Brittany did say
29:55that she wanted to try
29:56some of Nana's recipes
29:58for cooking for herself.
29:59If nothing else,
29:59we just need to kind of
30:00maybe put them in a place
30:01that she can actually refer to them.
30:03Maybe even if it's a photo album
30:04or it's displayed somewhere,
30:07you know,
30:07got to marinate on that for a minute.
30:09Marinate.
30:09You like what I did there?
30:10I like what you did there.
30:11Yeah, yeah.
30:11Very punny.
30:13I like what you did there.
30:14Yeah.
30:15All right.
30:15Well, I'm going to let you
30:16hold on to these.
30:18Yeah, let me have these
30:18while I marinate.
30:19I'm going to get back
30:20to taking off these handles.
30:21Okay.
30:22But this is a great find.
30:23Yeah, I thought you would be into that.
30:24Treat them with love.
30:25Treat them with love.
30:25I absolutely will.
30:41All right.
30:42I want to put that right here.
30:43This way?
30:43Yeah.
30:44Okay.
30:45Wow.
30:46I'm really happy with that.
30:47Yeah.
30:48That is exactly what we want.
30:49Looks like a butcher block.
30:50It looks like a butcher.
30:51What do you think?
30:52I think it's really cute.
30:54I like it.
30:55You want to see the moment of truth?
30:56There's a moment of truth.
30:57This is essentially like
30:58a beeswax oil kind of mixture.
31:00And what it's going to do
31:01is going to seal this
31:02so that you can chop vegetables on it.
31:03All right, here we go.
31:04Let's see.
31:04That stuff smells good.
31:06So what's it smell like?
31:07Now I'm interested.
31:07Smell.
31:09Oh, it does.
31:10Like orange.
31:11Yeah.
31:12Oh, that's nice.
31:13It's really bringing out the color.
31:14Yeah.
31:15Oh, and all the detail
31:16in the end grain.
31:17In the end grain.
31:19Now you know.
31:20Oh, that looks really nice.
31:21Right?
31:21Yeah, Luke did a great job.
31:23Yeah, thank you.
31:23I've really worked very hard on this.
31:25Well, it's just really, really satisfying,
31:27I think, to see a really big,
31:29chunky piece of wood, too.
31:32Oh, I'm really happy with that.
31:33That's really pretty.
31:34That looks really, really pretty.
31:35It does.
31:36I love it.
31:37So this is almost finished.
31:39There is one last detail
31:42that's going to finish this piece off,
31:43and it's kind of our ongoing conversation.
31:47Our ongoing conundrum.
31:48About?
31:49Paint versus stain.
31:50Exactly.
31:50I see where this is going.
31:51I'm studying this a little bit closer.
31:53Mm-hmm.
31:54And when you see it next,
31:55it'll be completely finished.
31:57Do I get a say?
31:58Mm-hmm.
31:58It'll be a surprise.
31:59I think I know what this one's going to be.
32:00Oh, man, I don't like surprises.
32:01Well, stay tuned.
32:03Well, all right.
32:04Leave me hanging in suspense.
32:05All right.
32:06I'm getting out of this heat.
32:07Yeah, get out of this heat.
32:08All right, have at it, guys.
32:09Yep, thanks.
32:12Yeah, she polished up nice.
32:13Yeah, it's nice, right?
32:14Yeah.
32:27Love that paper.
32:27It's gorgeous, isn't it?
32:28Yeah, it turned out nice.
32:30Well, we still have a ton of things left to do.
32:31All right, let's hear the list.
32:32Okay, we have to hang the light fixture.
32:34Mm-hmm.
32:34Let's see your face.
32:37Install the banquette.
32:38Yep.
32:40Nice.
32:41Hang the china.
32:42One down.
32:434,000 more to go.
32:444,000 to go.
32:46You have to finish your butcher block.
32:48Uh-huh.
32:49We have to hang the recipes that we found.
32:52Oh, that's cute.
32:54I've got to place decor
32:56and make this place really, really pretty.
33:00It's so cute.
33:02Lay the rug.
33:06Oh, my God.
33:07That looks so pretty.
33:09It's fantastic.
33:10And the fireplace decor.
33:12Ooh.
33:13It's like it was always meant to be here.
33:17Do you think Brittany is going to like it?
33:19We've asked Hunter and Brittany to enter through the mudroom door so they can experience a new space as they would in their busy day-to-day life.
33:33Oh, they're smiling already.
33:35Oh, she looks so pretty.
33:37Oh, she looks so good.
33:39Yes.
33:40I'm very excited to see what's in store for us.
33:43And I just can't wait to get in there and see it with my own two eyes.
33:46Are you excited?
33:47I am excited.
33:50Hunter.
33:51How's it going?
33:52Hi.
33:53Welcome home again.
33:56Wow.
33:57Come on in.
33:57Okay.
33:58Oh, man.
33:59Come on in.
34:00Wow.
34:00This is incredible.
34:03Oh, my God.
34:04Yes.
34:10Incredible.
34:11It's completely different from what we had before.
34:13Oh, it was just really white.
34:15Yeah.
34:16Really gross and colored.
34:16It washed everything out.
34:18It's amazing.
34:19This is amazing.
34:20Wow.
34:21We have some really nice wood pieces in here.
34:25The rug.
34:26Love the rug.
34:26Wow.
34:27Love the rug.
34:27Yeah.
34:27The colors.
34:29Oh, wow.
34:29That bench is amazing.
34:32Okay.
34:32Is that where you can pull it out?
34:34Oh, yes.
34:35We gave you a little drawer here.
34:36Oh, that is awesome.
34:38Oh, that is awesome.
34:38So that's useful.
34:39Oh, wow.
34:40Perfect.
34:41That's perfect.
34:42Remember when we first came?
34:44The shoes were all from there and around here?
34:46Yes.
34:47Wow.
34:47That's so much nicer.
34:48That's so much better.
34:50That is.
34:51And that's a moment of personality over there with the splashes of orange and blues.
34:55Take a look around.
34:56Turn around.
34:56Absolutely.
34:57Look behind you.
34:57There's more things to spot.
34:58Oh, Brittany, looky here.
34:59Oh, my gosh.
35:00What is that?
35:01Go take a look.
35:02Look at there.
35:03Wow.
35:04Oh, my gosh.
35:04Oh, the kids are going to love that.
35:07Yes.
35:07Oh, my goodness.
35:08I would say it could be a little mommy hangout, too,
35:10if ever you need to.
35:11Yeah.
35:12Yes, exactly.
35:13I'll hide out.
35:14You won't be able to find me.
35:15Oh, that is awesome.
35:17That is awesome.
35:22Look at this.
35:23Oh, that is a beautiful piece.
35:26Wow.
35:27Yeah.
35:27The thought that went into this is incredible.
35:29Yeah, this is awesome.
35:32Oh, that is incredible.
35:34Look at that.
35:36That's perfect.
35:36So a place for more storage.
35:37Yes.
35:38Remember, you needed more storage.
35:39And this is hideaway storage.
35:40So you can hang it, leave it.
35:42Leave it.
35:43That is perfect.
35:43Close it up.
35:44Yes.
35:45We will use this a lot.
35:46Oh, yeah.
35:47We'll use this all the time.
35:48This is great.
35:49So in the spirit of Chi-Chi and her pristineness, you have a place to put things, and then nobody
35:54knows that it's there.
35:55You just see this beautiful piece of furniture.
35:57Right.
35:57Y'all have really taken this and give Brittany her flair to make it her own, as well as keeping
36:03the Victorian touches.
36:04Cool.
36:04Well, we know you know that modern house.
36:07That's right.
36:07That's right.
36:08How to blend the two.
36:09Yeah.
36:10You did a wonderful job.
36:10This is great.
36:11Oh, my gosh.
36:18Oh, my gosh.
36:23This is beautiful.
36:25This is so, so good.
36:28Oh, my gosh.
36:29Wow.
36:35This is incredible.
36:38Gosh.
36:39This is so good.
36:41I love everything about this.
36:44I love this.
36:45This island is incredible.
36:47Love that.
36:48So you finally have the island.
36:50A lot more space, obviously.
36:51That was one of the biggest challenges in the kitchen before, right?
36:54Was having a place for everybody to sit.
36:56Exactly.
36:57So this gives you a lot more surface space.
36:58Oh, I love it.
36:59Perfect.
37:00Oh, man.
37:00That is so nice.
37:01People can sit around finally in the kitchen.
37:04Love this island.
37:04No, this is great.
37:05I love all of this.
37:06I love this.
37:07And there's tons of seating.
37:07Yeah.
37:08Tons of seating.
37:08Seating's great.
37:09Yeah.
37:10And it's another play on stain versus paint.
37:12Right.
37:13We tried to find opportunities in the entire kitchen to give you both what you wanted.
37:17Right.
37:18Perfect.
37:19We also originally were actually going to remove the drying rack above the sink.
37:26Okay.
37:27But then it actually worked out so nicely because it was the wood kind of paint conversation
37:31that we haven't had so much.
37:33Right.
37:33If you love something, why would you get rid of it?
37:35Right.
37:36Now, this is gorgeous.
37:37It looks so good.
37:38God, this looks awesome.
37:39I love that lighting picture.
37:40Yeah.
37:41Look at that.
37:42That is so pretty.
37:43Oh, my gosh.
37:44Yes.
37:45Wow.
37:45Wow.
37:45And we kept the cabinets.
37:51They were in great shape.
37:53A fresh coat of paint, some new hardware.
37:55They look like completely different cabinets.
37:56They really do.
37:57They really do.
37:57I cannot get over the sink faucet like that.
38:00That is so pretty.
38:01Like, scared to touch it is so nice.
38:03You know, you have to have a little bling in Victoria's side.
38:05That is your bling bling.
38:07The flex, right?
38:08That's right.
38:08That's the flex.
38:09Exactly.
38:12Really love the wallpaper.
38:13This is great.
38:14So much personality to the space.
38:16It does.
38:17Look at Chi-Chi's China.
38:18I love it.
38:18I think it's so cool, right?
38:20That is, I would have never thought to have displayed it like this.
38:23And it matches the wallpaper.
38:24Oh, wow.
38:25That is beautiful.
38:27It's all so good.
38:28It is a piece of art.
38:29That's exactly what we were thinking.
38:30Can we install it so that it looks like an art installation?
38:33And it just dances.
38:34It does.
38:35It does, yeah.
38:36Oh, my gosh, look.
38:40Oh, that is, look at that.
38:43And now it's the perfect place to highlight it.
38:44Before it was in the mudroom, it just kind of got lost.
38:47It didn't make any sense.
38:48Right.
38:48This is where it belongs.
38:49It's its home, right?
38:50That's right.
38:50Exactly.
38:51And this was my grandmother's.
38:52And to have it decorated and displayed as it should in the house means a lot.
38:58So we obviously had to keep this amazing stove.
39:01But we noticed there wasn't a lot of space in the other side.
39:03So I made this little butcher block table for you guys.
39:07Oh, that is incredible.
39:08That looks so good.
39:09Well, it's just one of these things that I feel like it is classic piece of furniture.
39:14That is beautiful.
39:16And now you have a place that you can take your vegetables right off your bed.
39:19Yes.
39:19Right into the closet.
39:21I'm going to carry them across the kitchen.
39:22So that is wonderful.
39:23And if you look up, we also.
39:26Wow.
39:27Yes, those are the recipes.
39:29Preserve some of the favorite ones.
39:31Awesome.
39:31That is really cool.
39:33That's really special.
39:34That is really special.
39:35We made sure that we had the spaghetti sauce on the way because we know how important that
39:40is.
39:40I'm sure that's the first recipe I'm about to try in this new kitchen.
39:43Well, and they're on eye level too, you know.
39:45Perfect.
39:46You don't have to be standing up to their height.
39:47Thought it all through.
39:48Yes.
39:48That is great.
39:49Wow.
39:50I think you kind of get a sense of what was at the core of so many of the things we were
39:55trying to do.
39:56Trying to give you something that feels both updated, but fresh, but respects a Victorian.
40:00Knocked it out of the park.
40:01Aw.
40:02Both of you.
40:03Yes.
40:03Both of you did.
40:04Did a phenomenal job.
40:06We couldn't be more happy, happier, happy with how it all turned out.
40:11I mean, it is fantastic.
40:13Did you get your kitchen?
40:14I did.
40:15I can't wait to have friends and family over and holidays and parties.
40:20I'm so excited now.
40:21Aw.
40:22That warms our heart.
40:23That's why we do it.
40:24Yes.
40:24And I feel now this is a space that is my space.
40:28Good.
40:29I mean, from the wallpaper, the chandelier, the butcher block, the beautiful hardware,
40:35I mean, everything is just jaw-dropping.
40:38But it also still honors his grandmother with the pieces in here.
40:41So now I feel like I'm not cooking grandma's kitchen where I met her.
40:45Yeah.
40:45But it's my own space, but it still ties back into his family heritage.
40:49So y'all did a great, great job.
40:51I'm very excited to see our home now feel like our home.
40:55So I'm just excited to get in and start living in it as a family.
40:59I really do love our house.
41:01It's so nice to finally be home.
41:03Good.
41:04Britt, welcome home.
41:05I'm excited.
41:12I don't know about you, but staying in this kitchen, I can smell the aromas of Chi-Chi's spaghetti.
41:17So I think we should maybe cook the spaghetti in this kitchen.
41:20Or maybe you guys should cook the spaghetti.
41:22Absolutely.
41:22Well, the recipe's on the wall.
41:23We can do it.
41:25Home is for the heart.
41:35Like the sky is for the sun and for the stars.
41:42At the end of the day, it's still my favorite home.
41:49Home is for the home.
41:52Home is for the home.
41:55.
41:56.
42:02.
