A 33-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn baby died after being struck by a car in Hornsby on Friday night. A 19-year-old man was charged after being arrested at a home in Wahroonga on Saturday morning.

00:06Well, we know that a car, a Kia Carnival, had slowed down at the entrance of a car park
00:13at the Hornsby train station about 8 o'clock last night
00:17to let the 33-year-old woman walk through the entrance.
00:22But as that car slowed down, it was struck from behind by a BMW
00:29causing the Kia to hit the pedestrian.
00:33Now, paramedics rushed to the scene.
00:35They tried to treat the 33-year-old woman who was 8 months pregnant.
00:41She was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
00:45Unfortunately, she and the unborn child died.
00:49Now, we learned just now from police that her husband and her 3-year-old son
00:56were also there and witnessed this tragic incident.

01:12and particularly tragic when people pass away
01:15and indeed when there's children involved.

01:20Pablo, what charges is the driver facing?
01:22Well, the 19-year-old did assist police at the site of the crash last night.
01:31He underwent mandatory testing.
01:34But early this morning, we know that New South Wales police arrested the 19-year-old
01:39at his home in Wurrunga.
01:41About 12.40 this morning, he was taken to Hornsby Police Station
01:46where he was questioned overnight.
01:48He has since been charged with a number of offences,
01:53including dangerous driving, occasioning death
01:56and the cause of the loss of a foetus or the death of a pregnant woman.
02:01He was refused bail, Mel, and he is expected to face court.
