00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:04Haggerston, in East London's Borough of Hackney, began as a small medieval hamlet surrounded
00:09by fields and manor estates. Through the 18th and early 19th centuries, London's rapid
00:15growth transformed the area into a dense, working class district, shaped by canals, railways
00:22and a light industry. Victorian terraces and factories defined daily life, and the Regents
00:28Canal became a major transport route. After the Second World War, bomb damage and urban
00:34decline led to significant council estate construction, giving Haggerston its distinctive modernist
00:41housing estates. From the 1990s onward, waves of regeneration artists and tech workers reshaped
00:49the neighbourhood. Today, Haggerston blends historic streets with waterways and creative
00:54studios.
