00:35television personality Jean Rayburn. And Borden's special guest tonight, Fred Allen.
00:41The exotic South Sea Islands, land of blue waters, warm sun, swaying palms, and luscious tempting
00:58pineapples. What wonderful pineapples grow here. Golden sun-drenched fruit ripened in the tropics
01:05till it's sweet and juicy. This is the pineapple you'll find in Lady Borden Tropic Isle pineapple
01:12ice cream. I never heard such compliments as I got last time I served this Tropic Isle
01:17pineapple. And no wonder. Every spoonful is just bursting with juicy golden pineapple.
01:23And Lady Borden is extra good because it's made with extra cream. Better be ready to serve
01:28seconds all around. Yes, Lady Borden Tropic Isle pineapple is just perfect when guests drop
01:34by. Or when you want to make a hit with a man in your life. Buy it where you see this
01:39new sign. Lady Borden. The finest of fine ice cream.
01:49Thank you and good evening ladies, I mean good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to another
01:53session of Make the Connection. We'll certainly welcome Mr. Allen a little bit later on. Tonight
01:58as usual our panel will try to make the connection between two contestants. And panel, you remember
02:03you can question our contestants as long as the light in front of you is on. And when
02:09the light goes out, the contestant receives $25. And when he has accrued a total of $150,
02:16the game is over. Everybody understand how we play this little deal here?
02:20Would you repeat that?
02:21He has accrued title of what?
02:23Accrued.
02:24Now let's meet our first guests please. Now would you tell us your name and where you're
02:36from? Lillian Evans, New York City. Lillian Evans, New York City. And you, sir? Lee Epstein,
02:43the Bronx. Leon Slavin, Queens. Leon Slavin, Queens. George Adamay, Queens. George Adamay,
02:49Queens. John Schemer, Queens. John Schemer, Queens. They had the microphone way up there and
02:54he had to look around. But we did hear all of your names and where you're from. Now for
02:58the benefit of our audience, let's make the connection. These men are all students in Miss
03:04Evans' class for expectant fathers.
03:10George. Okay, panel, I'll give you one link in this connection. This is something that Miss
03:18Evans is doing for these gentlemen. And we'll start the questioning with Betty White.
03:24Um, are you four gentlemen a team of some sort? No. Is there any sport or athletics connected
03:32with what you do? No. No. Well, do you have something in common aside from your connection
03:40with Miss Evans? No. Yes, yes, I must correct you on that. You do have something in common
03:46with all of these gentlemen. Yes. Do you work together? No. No. Do you share the same kind
03:58of hobby? Really? No, the answer to that is no, if I may intercede here. That's $25 down and $125 to go.
04:12And now let's hear your questions, Jean. Miss Evans, I'm a little tired of this game. Would you be
04:17interested in some post office? Do you do a service for these fellas? Yes. Do they come to you for the
04:24service? Yes, they do. Does this service have to do with advice? Could be called that. It could be
04:31called that, but I better be careful from here on in. No. Well, does it have to do with romance,
04:38marriage? Yes. Are these fellas coming to you for this advice because they're going to be married soon?
04:44No. No. That's $50 down and $100 to go. Gloria Dehaven. Miss Evans, could I ask you,
04:53is this something you do for more married men than single men? Yes. Sure. Gentlemen, are you married?
05:02Yes. To each other? No. Well, is this something that you're all learning something from Miss Evans,
05:12is that right? Yes. Has it to do with your families? Yes. Your families. Your children? Yes. In a way,
05:22yes. In a way. Is Miss Evans teaching you something about your children or a course for your children? Yes.
05:30You're pretty close to it. Can you elaborate on a little more? Perfect. You're not very close to it.
05:38All right, $75 down and $75 to go. Eddie, do you think you have any ideas? Well, I think very
05:42definitely Gloria led me into it. These are expecting fathers, and this is a nurse teaching them how to
05:48take care of things. That's correct, Eddie. You got it right on the nose. I must say, Gloria,
05:59you did get pretty close to it, and you were pretty sharp tonight. Miss Evans, what are some of the
06:03things you teach these gentlemen? Well, we teach them how to take care of the baby. You know, for
06:09example, bathing it, dressing it, holding it. How to hold it properly and how to feed it. And you teach them
06:17that after they feed them, they put them over there, and then they, you know, that business,
06:21you teach them all that gently. Sure. And also, the wives, how to take care of themselves during
06:28their pregnancy, health practices, which are good for... You know, Jean, I have a course going on now.
06:35I teach the nurses how to do this to teach the elderly. How many children do you have? Five.
06:41I guess you could. Did you volunteer to take this course, or did your wife twist your arm,
06:48or how did you get into it? I think it was mutual. You just talked it over, and that happened with all
06:55of you. You decided that you'd like to go into it. When do you expect the blessed event in your
06:59family? About October 19th. October 19th? Around Christmas. Around Christmas? November 15th. November
07:0515th? October 10th. October 10th. Well, everything seems to be under control. It's almost nervous time,
07:12isn't it? Borden's would like to help you get started. And to help you get started,
07:19they are going to see that each of you receives a supply of Borden's evaporated milk. And that'll
07:26get your young people off to a very good start. We'd like to thank you on behalf of Borden's for being
07:31our guests tonight, and wish all of you the greatest success in the world. Thank you very much.
07:36Thank you. Thank you. And thank you, McClendon.
07:45How many, did either of you men ever take a course like this, or you know all about it? How about you, Gene?
07:51Well, it comes natural to you, this whole thing, I understand. Yes, it does. I'd like to say one more
07:57thing, though, Gene. It's a little bit in the business here, but last week, Eddie mentioned the
08:02Hess store in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and he got balled out. You just gave a plug for a product,
08:07and that wasn't nice. It's a very nice product, and I am happy to do it anytime on behalf of Borden's.
08:14Now, let's move along with our next connection. May we have our next guest, please?
08:18Let me just put that phone book down there for you, and get you up on the chair, because you're
08:31kind of short. Is that comfortable for you? Good. Would you tell us your name? Carolyn Greiner.
08:37Carolyn Greiner, and where is your home, Carolyn? 90-46 Throne Avenue, Elmhurst, Long Island.
08:44Elmhurst, Long Island. That's a pretty cute hat. Did you get that hat recently?
08:50For Easter. For Easter. Well, it's very attractive. Thank you.
08:55Now, would you give us your name? Louise Manziak. And where do you live, Louise?
09:002090 Brines Avenue, Bronx. Well, it's nice to have you with us, and you look very charming in
09:05your Girl Scout uniform. Thank you. Now, for the benefit of our audience, let's make the connection.
09:12This past summer, Louise Manziak saved Carolyn Greiner from drowning.
09:21Would you sit a little closer to me? There we are. Panel, I'll give you one link to begin you
09:29on this series. This is something Louise did for Carolyn. Louise did for Carolyn, and we'll start with
09:35Gloria Dehaven. Well, Carolyn was just grinning and seemed so happy. It must have been kind of nice.
09:41Was it fun, Carolyn? You liked it? It wasn't fun. Would you smile, please, for us?
09:50Did you look at the camera? Carolyn? Carolyn. Why not, Carolyn?
09:57Good. Because why? My teeth are out. Your teeth are out.
10:03Well, this happens to everybody, Carolyn. I don't think you should feel bad about it. You look very
10:08charming, with or without teeth. I'll take mine out for you if it makes you feel any better.
10:11Carolyn? Carolyn? Is that what you want for Christmas?
10:17No? Louise, let me ask you something. My little girl is a Cub Scout, so I know a little bit about
10:23the Scouts. Does this have something to do with, is it connected with being a Girl Scout? Is what you
10:28did for Carolyn being a part of the Girl Scouts? Well, no. Indirectly. You would have done it anyway? Yes.
10:38Has it anything to do with a rescue, as far as Carolyn is concerned, or saving her in any way? Yes.
10:43Yes. Oh, thank you, Carolyn. That's $25 down and $125 to go, and Gloria, you're pretty sharp tonight. You're
10:51giving Eddie two clues there. Eddie, can you pick it up? Well, I can try to pick it up by saying,
10:55did this happen, was there water connected with this? Yes. You're asking Carolyn? I'll ask Carolyn.
11:03Was there water connected with this, Carolyn? Yes. Were you in swimming at the time? No. But there was
11:09water connected. Did this happen out of doors? Did this young lady save you while you were in the
11:18water? Were you drowning at the time? That's it, Eddie. You got the connection. You made the connection.
11:25Louise here is a very brave and quick-thinking young lady. Last summer, she saved Carolyn from
11:34drowning. Can you tell us a little bit about it, Louise, how it happened? Well, Caroline was playing
11:41by the lake there, and she leaned over too far, and she fell in head first, and I saw that instead of
11:49running for help, it would waste too much time, I went over there, and I leaned out, and I grabbed
11:54her hand, and I pulled her in. Well, that was a wonderful thing to do, indeed.
12:03Yes? I wanted to say one thing. I think I got a little confused. I said I knew a little bit about
12:08the scouts. My daughter wants to be a brownie. I was going to say, if she's a Cub Scout, she must have more
12:12fun than anybody. It's my son who wants to be a Cub Scout. It's a brownie. Is that right? The little
12:17ones are brownies. That's right. Let's keep this thing straight here. She still wants to be a Cub
12:21Scout. I'd like to point out why Louise is in her Girl Scout uniform tonight. Right after the show,
12:27Mrs. Fred Cushman, who is the Girl Scout Commissioner in the Bronx, is going to take her to
12:32a leaders' club meeting where she will receive the Girl Scout Lifesaving Award. And our congratulations
12:40to you. The Borden Company would also like to add their congratulations to you, Louise, for your heroic
12:50actions. And we spoke to your mother this afternoon to find out what we could do for you, what sort of
12:55thing we might get for you. She told us that you'd like to have something that you could share with the
12:59other girls in your troop. And we poked around a little further and found out that the equipment
13:04you need is an outdoor camping outfit. And we're going to see that you get it. The whole works for
13:10you and the crew. Thank you very much, Louise. Good night. Now, don't you go. How about standing right
13:22here for one minute and looking at the camera and closing your eyes? Would you do that? Because I've
13:26got something for you, too. That's fine. And smile, too, while you're waiting.
13:35No. Everybody in unison. No.
13:40Now you may open your eyes, Carolyn. What do you think of this attractive and charming lady?
13:46Isn't that something? We got that for you because we thought it might help keep you indoors and away
13:52from the piers and away from the water for a while until you learn how to swim. Would you like to have
13:57this doll? All right. You may have it. How about giving me a little kiss on the cheek here? That's fine.
14:02She tells doll of a child. Jean, are you sure she wouldn't rather have that puppy dog?
14:19In just a moment, panel, you're going to have a chance to make the connection between our guest
14:24star, Fred Allen, and another gentleman. But now here's a word about a fine Borden product I'm sure
14:30we'd all like to make connections with.
14:35Mmm, apple pie with ice cream and coffee. They really go together. Especially when the coffee
14:42is Borden's instant coffee. Mellow, satisfying, with flavor as rich as the best ground coffee.
14:50Hi, I'm Derwood Kirby.
14:51This is really good coffee. You know why Borden's is so very good? Because Borden's selects only the
15:02choicest premium grade coffee. Big, flavorful, perfect coffee beans like this one. Only premium grade coffee.
15:13Remember, among instant coffees, it's Borden's that brings you only premium grade coffee to give you
15:19flavor as rich as the best ground coffee. Get Borden's instant coffee with premium grade flavor.
15:27Flavor as rich as the best ground coffee. If it's Borden's, it's got to be good coffee.
15:33All right, now before we carry on here, I must remind myself here to mention a great organization. I
15:44neglected to mention the organization that Miss Evans is connected with. The young lady who was with us
15:48a little earlier in the program who teaches expectant parents how to take care of little
15:53children. She is from the visiting nurse service of New York. A fine group of people who do a great
16:00work. Now, friends, one of the truly great names in American humor, author of Treadmill to Oblivion,
16:07Mr. Fred Allen.
16:17I haven't said anything yet, Fred. Why are you laughing? I'm anticipating, Gene. I'm looking forward
16:22to something you're going to say, something witty, I hope. Well, I'll sit here. I am not prepared. I'm
16:27preparedly, truly not prepared. Well, you haven't been doing much preparation these days for television
16:32shows because I understand you're real busy writing another book. That's true. My autobiography.
16:38And I have to live 10 more, it's short up to now, I have to live 10 more years to be able to finish
16:43the book, so it'll take some time. How many pages do you expect it to be? Well, I don't know. I don't
16:50write in pages. I don't, there aren't any verbs in my, and there isn't any punctuation in the first
16:56chapters. I have 400 pages of one sentence. I forgot the punctuation in my desire to speed it up.
17:05Well, I'm certainly going to look forward to that book with no punctuation. I wasn't very good at that
17:10for myself. Now, Fred, it's time to meet the second half. Really? Time went so quickly.
17:14It's time to meet the second half of your connection. The celebrated musician, actor,
17:22author, and bold vivant, Meredith Wilson. I didn't mean to imply that you weren't tall enough to reach
17:38a microphone. I just forgot to remove the telephone. Don't tell me Meredith is going to get a doll too.
17:44I thought you were bucking for another kiss on the cheek. That may be, Meredith. Who knows?
17:50I would like to point out to all you assembled here. French leave, I was going to say, if he starts
17:56kissing you on the cheek. Meredith has written another book. He's done it for the third time
18:01in a row now. Do you remember? He wrote a book called There I Stood With My Piccolo, and then he wrote
18:08Who Did What to Fidelia? It sounds like a bit out of Allen's Alley. I don't believe these titles
18:13either, Fred, do you? I've read both of them. They're excellent. You have? How is this one,
18:17Fred? Have you had an advanced peek at it? No, it's not out yet, is it, Meredith? Yes, it was out
18:21yesterday. As a matter of fact, Fred Allen stars in the first chapter. Oh, really? Well, I'll certainly
18:26read the first chapter. I'm looking forward to that. I'm working on another book, The Man Without a
18:30Country by Peron, you know, the... I think we ought to get along here with the business at hand.
18:39Well, time is, yes. We've got to rush things along. We're going to do something tonight that
18:43we've never done before. You ought to name hurricanes, Gene. We're going to do something
18:48that we've never done before, and that is do a connection here with one half of the connection
18:53actually not knowing what it is. At least I'm sputtering. I can see that. The panel doesn't know,
18:58and neither does Mr. Wilson. But for the benefit of our audience now, let's make the connection.
19:04Mr. Wilson has forgotten, but he owes Fred Allen $19 for five years.
19:10Panel, let me give you this one link. This is something Fred did for Meredith,
19:22and we'll start the questioning with Gene Clavin.
19:27Mr. Wilson, did Mr. Allen write your last book?
19:32No, actually, I don't think he did.
19:35I'm going to have to help him out here,
19:37since he doesn't know what the connection is. I can recognize you because you don't have the
19:40glasses on. The only bare-faced idea.
19:45I'll use this tomorrow. We should finish it. Meredith, is this to do with music?
19:51I don't know, Gene. They didn't tell me.
19:55I know, and I won't tell.
19:58It has nothing to do with music. I'll answer that question.
20:01Well, has it anything to do, Mr. Allen, with jokes?
20:04Uh, no. That's $25 down and $125 to go. Gloria, you may go ahead.
20:10Fred, does it have anything to do with your writing?
20:13Uh, no.
20:14Does it have anything to do with professional work at all?
20:17Uh, vaguely.
20:19Vaguely?
20:20Vaguely.
20:20Very vaguely.
20:21Did this happen a long time ago?
20:23Um, comparatively a long time.
20:26Fifteen years ago?
20:27Uh, no.
20:28Ten years ago?
20:30No.
20:30Twenty years ago?
20:31No.
20:32Uh, this way?
20:35I feel like I'm playing charades.
20:36I shouldn't count you, but I...
20:37No, only yes or no.
20:38Take a wild guess, you know.
20:39Is it something that happened very recently,
20:41the last couple of years?
20:42Uh, no.
20:43You better tell her, Mr. Allen.
20:45I think it was.
20:45Wasn't Fred about two or three years ago?
20:47Four years ago.
20:48Four years ago.
20:48Did it have to do with your personal lives?
20:51Your wives, perhaps?
20:52Uh, no.
20:53Wives, no.
20:53No.
20:54That's $50 down and $100 to go.
20:56Eddie, uh, did you, uh, uh,
20:58was there an object involved here?
21:00An object?
21:01Yes.
21:01It was an object.
21:02Did you fill his fountain pen for him or something like that?
21:05Uh, no.
21:06No, I hadn't.
21:06Uh, this object, is something I could hold in my hand?
21:10Uh, no.
21:12No, it's a big object like a piano?
21:14Uh, no.
21:15You didn't...
21:16Not quite that big, no.
21:17Not quite as big as a piano.
21:18It's in the middle somewhere.
21:20Uh, in between.
21:21Is it a living object?
21:22Uh, no, it's not living.
21:26That's $75 down and $75 to go.
21:29And, uh, let's hear from Betty White.
21:32Mr. Allen, did you give, uh, Mr. Wilson anything?
21:34Uh, no, I didn't.
21:36Did you sell him anything?
21:37No.
21:37Mr. Wilson, is there anything you should know?
21:40Time is gone.
21:41Time is gone.
21:42Yeah, I'm afraid I'm going to have to reveal the connection now to you
21:46and we'll award the full $150 to our contestants here.
21:49Oh, really?
21:50Yes, we will.
21:51Meredith has forgotten, panel, but he owes Fred $19.
21:55He sure does.
21:56For four years.
22:03Would you, uh, would you like to refresh his memory now, Fred?
22:06I certainly would.
22:07When we were in Paris with the big show with Tallulah Bankhead,
22:11when we did the show in Paris, Meredith was going to fly home
22:14and he had a large, uh, music trunk that weighed a ton
22:18and he couldn't take it on the plane.
22:20And he asked me if I would take it on the boat.
22:22We were coming on the Queen Elizabeth
22:24and I spent $19 to send the trunk down to Le Havre to get on the boat
22:29and I haven't gotten it yet.
22:35And at the, uh, rate of exchange, that's 6,500, uh, francs, you know.
22:41That's a lot of hot dogs.
22:42It sure is.
22:44Why don't you just sign over the rights to the book to him, Meredith,
22:47and, uh, let it go at that.
22:48Actually, Eggs I Have Laid is a book that anybody here could have written.
22:52But, uh, it sure seems like old home week.
22:54Did you write it standing up?
22:56Yes, on a Dickens desk.
22:59It is like old home week, Gene.
23:01And I, I, I recall with great pleasure some of the arguments Fred and I used to have.
23:05Yes.
23:05On the big show.
23:06I'm going to pay you the 19, Fred, in francs, so.
23:08All right.
23:09And, uh, uh, Fred, do you still feel as you do about Boston versus Mason City, my hometown?
23:15Well, I do, Meredith, because you always claimed that folk music started out in that part of the
23:19country.
23:19That's right.
23:20Song of the Plowboy.
23:21And I think that they, that folk music, the people in, in small towns have the best of it.
23:26The people in the big cities have no music like the cowboys or the plow hands.
23:31We have no music in the cities.
23:32The man who's on the sanitation truck or the man who goes down to the BMT or the man who works in the,
23:38in the chase bank, he has no music to sing as he goes to work.
23:41Has no song.
23:42And I have written a city Billy, uh, song.
23:45A city Billy song?
23:46City Billy.
23:47It's not a hillbilly.
23:47It's a city Billy.
23:48And it's about a man who works in the city.
23:50His name is Homer Tracy.
23:52And I brought the lyrics here and I have the song.
23:54If you would be kind enough to play it for me.
23:56On what?
23:56Shall we take a whack at that?
23:57On the piano, if you can play it.
23:58On the piano over there.
23:59And, uh, if I could get the panel to help me with the, uh, the lyrics.
24:02All right, panel.
24:03Would you be willing to cooperate?
24:04To become a choir on short notice.
24:06A little semicircle around here.
24:07Because time is fleeting, you know.
24:09Time goes awfully fast.
24:10Oh, it does.
24:11Time does go.
24:12I brought, I happen to bring my guitar up.
24:14Oh, good for you.
24:15Is this the music here?
24:16I'm playing it right there.
24:18Just, uh, if you will look at these lyrics and, uh, see if you can help me out with them.
24:23It's a very simple melody.
24:24It looks like it's in Tallulah's Key.
24:26I don't know.
24:27It's all pretty low.
24:27It's pretty low, but we'll scrape it up off the floor.
24:30If you can really go there.
24:32Everybody tune up.
24:33I sing, I sing the, the verse and you folks sing the chorus when we come to the chorus.
24:42It's very simple.
24:43Same song?
24:43All right.
24:44No, not necessarily.
24:45It might improve it.
24:51Listen, folks, a song I'll sing, a different sort of ditty.
24:55Our hero didn't live in the hills, he lived in New York City.
24:59Our hero lived in New York City.
25:02His name was Homer Tracy.
25:05He worked in a department store.
25:07The store was owned by Macy.
25:11Yes, Homer was a city boy.
25:14He wore an Adam hat.
25:16He took the BMT to work and he ate in the automat.
25:20Our hero was a floor walker.
25:22His name was Homer Tracy.
25:24He walked the floor at a department store.
25:27And the store was owned by Macy.
25:31Once Macy's had a girdle sale.
25:33The mad mob lost its head.
25:35They trampled Homer until closing time.
25:38And it left him, therefore, dead.
25:39And now we're not leaving.
25:41His name was the blood of Homer Tracy.
25:44There was door on the floor of an apartment store.
25:46And the store was owned by Macy.
25:48In his coffin, Homer lay with a smile.
25:53We knew what the smile on his face meant.
25:55Homer Tracy was still with Macy.
25:58They buried him in the basement.
26:00The epitaph on Homer's grave says life is just a symbol.
26:13I might be alive today if I had worked for him more.
26:22I might be alive.
26:31Thank you very much, Fred.
26:32Have a fresh, really, very strong.
26:34Really created something for city folks.
26:36Another first.
26:37Another first.
26:37And thank you, Meredith Wilson.
26:38And our time is all gone again.
26:39We'll be dead before the night is over.
26:42Our time is over.
26:43No, we won't.
26:44I certainly do want to thank Meredith Wilson and Fred Allen for being with us tonight.
26:49In just a moment, I'll tell you about next week's guest.
26:51But right now, I'd like to point out that nobody treats an appetite quite as well as Borden's does.
26:57And let me show you what I mean.
27:02Sometimes a child seems to practically glow with good health.
27:07And sometimes he has hardly enough energy to get through the day.
27:12This is the way my boys were acting.
27:14And frankly, I was stumped.
27:16I thought they were getting their daily vitamins and minerals in their regular diet.
27:20But I couldn't be sure until I started giving them this wonderful new Gale Borden milk.
27:26With Gale Borden, you know exactly how much each quart gives you of each vitamin and mineral.
27:31It tells you right here.
27:33And if you compare these amounts with the amounts in regular milk,
27:37you'll see the new Gale Borden provides twice as many vitamins and minerals.
27:42And you know what that means?
27:44Just one quart supplies practically all the vitamins and minerals you need in a day.
27:49I found it's well worth an extra penny or so.
27:53Help your youngsters keep that extra glow of good health with extra nourishing Gale Borden milk.
27:58Now it's time for me to bid a collective goodnight to our panel
28:07and congratulate them for the good job they did tonight vocally.
28:11And we hope you'll be able to join us here again next week when our guest will be Peter Lawford.
28:15Until then, goodnight.
28:23This has been a Mark Goodson, Bill Todman production.
