00:02Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:10I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:30I won't be beat, healthy mind, healthy body, I'm a gladiator for the year 2000.
00:41What's up? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:43And I'm Valerie Ray Miller.
00:44Are you in the mood to play along with some wall climbing, cannon firing, eliminator running, pumped up kids?
00:50That's what I thought.
00:53Then you really need to put down that remote control and get ready to play Gladiators 2000.
01:00All right, let's meet our teams.
01:02For the blue team, weighing 85 pounds, standing 4 feet 11 inches tall, it's Johnny Cato.
01:08And at 119 pounds, standing 5 feet 3 inches tall, Julie Carl.
01:12And coaching the blue team today, look at that block kit, it's hot.
01:18And for the red team, weighing 100 pounds, standing 5 feet 1 inch tall, it's Taylor Lawrence.
01:24And at 75 pounds, standing 4 feet 8 inches tall, it's Ozaka Boyd.
01:29And cooking the rest of the day is Sabre.
01:35For you guys at home, even though you may not have the great American Gladiator games in your backyard.
01:39Well, you could if you're like us, because we had to build them.
01:41You can still play along.
01:42That's right.
01:43Each week here on Gladiators 2000, we'll be showing you guys some real cool things that you can do with
01:47stuff you've got laying around your house.
01:48So if you've got something to write with and write on, you can be a part of our first event.
01:50It's the wall, a four-story climb.
01:55Straight up!
01:56Woo!
01:58Our wall is divided into four different zones, and one contender from each team will have 90 seconds to make
02:03it to the top of the wall,
02:04earning five points every time they get their entire body into a new zone.
02:07And if someone gets to the top before time runs out, they'll earn ten bonus points with five bonus points
02:12going to the second contender over the top.
02:14Meanwhile, their teammates have a challenge of their own down here on La Tierra Firma.
02:19Well, what are you kissing?
02:20What's the, uh, Tierra Firma?
02:21It's Italian!
02:21It's Italian!
02:22It's solid ground.
02:23I thought you were trying to kiss me or something.
02:25No.
02:25For every zone the climbers reach, their teammate will uncover a hidden word or phrase here on these boards.
02:30Each time they draw a line that correctly matches those words to the corresponding word or phrase on the right
02:34side of the board,
02:35they'll earn an extra five points.
02:37Our subject today is words and their meanings.
02:39And if you want to play along at home, take a pen and paper and write down the numbers one
02:42through four along the left side of your paper.
02:43Then on the right side, put down these words.
02:46Pilfer.
02:46Below that.
02:47Plethora.
02:48Then Enigma and Dilemma.
02:51All right, you guys at home, give it a try.
02:52See how you do if you were right here on Gladiators 2000.
02:54Let's do it!
02:55Let's hit it!
02:56Climbing for the blue team, we got Johnny Cano.
02:59Hey, what up, dude?
03:00And playing matchup, Julie Carl.
03:03For the red team, our climber is Ozika Boyd.
03:05And our matcher is Taylor Lawrence.
03:07All right, blue team ready?
03:08Red team ready?
03:09Peggy is ready?
03:11Let's climb!
03:14Johnny and Ozika with an aggressive burst onto the wall.
03:18Down here on the floor, Julie's waiting patiently for a first question.
03:22Problem, the answer is Dilemma.
03:24That means Johnny's in the first zone, working on the second zone.
03:26Meanwhile, Zika now in the first zone.
03:28Taylor also got the first question correct.
03:30Five points when you get your entire body into each zone.
03:32In the zone, baby!
03:35The second question, puzzle is also another word for Enigma.
03:38And she got it correct.
03:39The key here, concentrate, focus.
03:41Where's your hand going?
03:42Where's your foot going?
03:43That was a long stretch there.
03:45Taylor's coming up with the same question.
03:46Puzzle is also Enigma.
03:47They both have correct.
03:48Five points for every match.
03:49Five points for every zone.
03:50Third question, Julie chooses Steel is another word for Pilfer.
03:53Also correct.
03:54Way to go, Julie.
03:55Johnny's working his way into the top.
03:56He's in that fourth zone now.
03:58He's looking for the top.
03:59The second question, a great mini is another word for Plesshra.
04:01Julie got him all right.
04:02Way to go.
04:02My man Johnny now makes the top.
04:04Ten goal is too late.
04:06Woo!
04:06Taylor's third question.
04:07Steel is another word for Pilfer.
04:08Correct.
04:09All right, Ozika knows Johnny's up top, but he wants to concentrate.
04:12He wants to look and get the right stones.
04:13He does not want to fall back down now.
04:15He's so far up.
04:16Woo!
04:17What's he doing?
04:17Where's he putting that foot?
04:18Where's he going to go?
04:19He's got two stairs.
04:19He spreads him out.
04:20Nice.
04:20He's going to cross the line.
04:21Come on, Ozika.
04:22Twelve seconds on the clock.
04:23Fourth question.
04:24Great mini is another word for Plesshra.
04:26Yes, Taylor got it correct.
04:27Gets in there.
04:27He's going to fish before time is up.
04:28Both teams have crossed the top before time is up.
04:31That means the red team gets an extra five points, too.
04:33Woo!
04:36Peggy blows the whistle.
04:38Hawk raises his arm, shows us his armpits.
04:40And this is one of the best parts right here, Val.
04:42Whoa!
04:43I want to do that.
04:44I'll take you after the show.
04:46This is a really bright group of kids.
04:47They got all the answers correct.
04:48Let me tell you something.
04:48Much smarter than me.
04:49Hey, what's the score, Peg?
04:52The blue team answers four questions correctly and are the first team to the top, earning
04:5710 extra points for a total score of 50 points.
05:00The red team answers four questions correctly.
05:02They also make it to the top, earning five extra points for a total of 45 points.
05:08Good job, guys.
05:09Now, dude, you're a gymnast, right?
05:11Yes, I am.
05:12And you did the most push-ups at tryouts.
05:14Yeah, I did 75 push-ups altogether.
05:16What an animal.
05:17He's an animal.
05:18Great job.
05:18It paid off on the wall.
05:19Now, you've got a plethora, if I may, of correct answers there on the board.
05:23Did you know all those words?
05:25Well, not exactly.
05:26I just kind of guessed.
05:27You guessed on a few of them.
05:28Valerie, what's up?
05:29Okay, so I've entered the first big round here in Gladiators 2000.
05:33The blue team leads 50 to 45, but the red team has got plenty of time to catch up in
05:37our next game.
05:38When all the contenders go up against the Gladiators in assault, don't go anywhere.
05:44Hey, you guys go find a table fork, and when we come back, I'll show you that, believe
05:48it or not, your bones have ears.
05:57Okay, welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
06:00Okay, welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
06:03Now, if you're like me, the first time you heard your voice on a tape recorder, you probably
06:07didn't think it sounded like you.
06:09But you know what?
06:09That's the way you sound to everybody else.
06:12Well, you're not crazy, but you are hearing things.
06:14The bones in your head.
06:15You see, everyone else hears the sound of your voice coming in through their ears, but you
06:19not only hear your voice coming in through your ears, but also through the bones in your
06:23skull.
06:24In fact, sometimes your bones can hear sounds that your ears can't hear.
06:28It's almost like they have ears of their own.
06:30Don't believe it?
06:31Well, that's what the fork is for.
06:33Take your fork, hit it on the counter, and then quickly clamp your teeth down on the fork.
06:42Now, that sound you hear is the vibration of the fork traveling through the bones in
06:45your head, bypassing your eardrum and vibrating your inner ear or cochlea directly.
06:49And your inner ear interprets the vibrations as sound.
06:53So, you see, your bones can sometimes hear things that your ears can't.
06:58And what if they get cabled?
07:04We're back for the second game of Gladiators 2000.
07:07Now, you might think that getting the chance to play these Gladiator games would be enough
07:10of a reward for our contenders, but hang on for a sec, because there's more.
07:13You know, they're also playing for some really cool prizes for themselves and their schools.
07:16But before we can give away any prizes, we've got a couple more games to play.
07:20Like, right now, our next event, it's the assault.
07:23For our assault, it's not the Gladiators to be firing that nasty little tennis ball cannon.
07:28It's the contenders.
07:29And their target?
07:30You guessed it.
07:31The Gladiator captain of the opposing team.
07:33As the contenders shoot it down, the Gladiators will be running from one firing station to the
07:37next, trying to hit that target over the contender's head.
07:40To make it a little more difficult for the Gladiators, we put three obstacles in their way
07:43to keep them in the line of fire a little bit longer.
07:45They'll have to climb a rope ladder, walk across a balance beam,
07:50and finally, broad jump from circle to circle.
07:52The Gladiators will score five points for their team each time they hit the target.
07:57Our contenders will score ten points for themselves every time they hit a Gladiator.
08:01Let's put 90 seconds on the clock.
08:03Remember, the contenders have to hand off control of their cannon midway through the competition.
08:07First up with the cannon, the red team.
08:09Taylor will shoot, then hand off to Ozeka.
08:13Running the course is the big man with the tan, Hawk.
08:17For the blue team.
08:18All right, Peggy, it's on you.
08:22Hawk now gets behind the first barrier with the cross.
08:25Bo picks it up, aims, fires.
08:28Misses.
08:30Taylor taking aim.
08:32Here he's now out in the open.
08:34She's got a pretty good aim there.
08:36Okay, she's really close.
08:38Did a nice job.
08:39Oh, boom!
08:39We got it!
08:40Five, ten!
08:41Ten points!
08:42Hawk looks stunned.
08:45He's on to the next firing station.
08:48Way off.
08:49Not good aim by Hawk.
08:51All right, now he's going to hit the balance beam out in the open.
08:53Now's a good time to fire.
08:54Quickly.
08:54Got him in your sight.
08:55That was another close shot.
08:56Boom!
08:57Again!
08:57Taylor!
08:58I felt that from here!
08:59You are the woman, Taylor.
09:01Sorry!
09:02Hawk's this big Zubacup ball, and oh!
09:04Doesn't happen.
09:05Oh, that's one!
09:06Another one!
09:0730 points!
09:08Let's swap up on the tower.
09:09Here goes Ozika.
09:10Control of the cannon, Ozika.
09:12Hawk, behind the next firing station, doesn't get it.
09:14Hawk, what are you firing at?
09:16If he hits that bullseye, he scores five points for the blue team.
09:18Let's see, save for the pitch.
09:20No!
09:21And no, but Hawk has got a great time on the court.
09:24Ozika's ready, he just shoots.
09:25Hits the buzzer.
09:27Great job, that time.
09:28Hawk man with the buzzer.
09:29Hey, Hawk.
09:30Hey, dude.
09:31What's this?
09:32You hit me with this thing.
09:33You know what?
09:33I don't like you.
09:34I never liked you.
09:35Get out of here.
09:36His report card always said doesn't play well with others.
09:39You know what I mean, Val?
09:41Let's go to Peggy now for the score.
09:42Peg?
09:43The red team earns 30 points for hitting the gladiator three times.
09:59Hawk makes zero points for the blue team.
10:05The red team's ahead 75 to 50.
10:07We'll see how the blue team does at the cannon when we come back with the second round of Assault.
10:11It's going to be sweet, and it's next.
10:13Hang on.
10:25Have you got an annoying little brother or sister who just won't leave you alone?
10:29Are you looking for just the right word to put them in their place?
10:32Then come on down to Big Ed's house of words, where today, and today only, Big Ed, that's me, is
10:40having a special one day cool words to use in your annoying little brother or sister sale.
10:47That's right.
10:48Come on down and scoop up some really cool words like abominable, meaning horrible or disgusting.
10:55Abominable, it's not just for snowmen anymore, I tell you.
10:58Yeah, I practically give it away cool words to use on your annoying little brother or sister like nuisance, meaning
11:04an obnoxious person or thing, a pest.
11:06I don't know about you, but that's my little brother.
11:09So if you've got an abominable brother or sister who's a nuisance, then come on down to see Big Ed,
11:16that's me, because I'm practically giving away words.
11:21Big Ed's house of words, take our word for it.
11:28Welcome back to Gladiators 2000, it's time for the second round of Assaults.
11:32First up at the cannon for the blue team is going to be Johnny, and Julie's going to finish up
11:36the second half.
11:37And for the red team, trying to make some points, it's going to be Sabre.
11:41Sabre over there talking to himself, like, why does he always talk to himself before this thing?
11:44Get himself fired up and ready to go.
11:46Peggy, let's start it.
11:52Here we go!
11:55Now to the cross, Bo picks it up, aims, going for that bullseye.
11:59He scores.
12:00And he misses.
12:01He gets five points for the team he represents.
12:02Who's he representing here?
12:03The red team.
12:04He's just testing it.
12:05All right, now climbing up the ladder, out in the open, this is where the blue team, we want to
12:09fire.
12:09Johnny wants to nail it.
12:10Johnny's chance.
12:11Fire a lot of balls quickly right here.
12:13Fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire.
12:17Back down now to the next shield.
12:20Picks up the nice shoulder gun.
12:22It's a very nice shoulder gun, and I've seen many in my day.
12:26And he misses it again.
12:27Sabre, where are you firing at, guys?
12:29All right, here he goes.
12:29He shakes his head.
12:30He says, come on now, Sabre.
12:31You talked to yourself before the race.
12:32Get it together.
12:33This is another good chance for Johnny to get it.
12:35All right, we're halfway through a buzzer sound.
12:37One last shot by Johnny Hinson.
12:39All right, now it's Julie's turn.
12:41Let's see how good it is.
12:41That scores 10 points.
12:43Bazooka ball over the top of the bullseye.
12:45Out in the open.
12:46Julie wants to fire quickly, rapidly.
12:48How many?
12:49That's good adverts, right?
12:50Quickly, rapidly.
12:50Is that what the next firing station?
12:53Swiftly.
12:54Julie's firing over the firing station.
12:57Happily.
12:59Here he is now with the big pitch.
13:00What?
13:01No.
13:01Just close.
13:02It was close, though.
13:02It was just low.
13:03It was their last chance.
13:0515 seconds on the clock.
13:06Sabre runs around now.
13:07Hawk's time was faster.
13:08Hawk ran it faster than Sabre did.
13:10Hey, hey.
13:11I made it through.
13:12They got one lucky shot, because I can't be mean to kids.
13:16So I let them shoot me once.
13:18Once.
13:19Why don't we go to Peggy and check that out?
13:22The blue team earns 10 points for hitting the gladiator one time.
13:26Sabre earns zero points for the red team.
13:31The red team is ahead 75 to 60, but all that can change in an instant.
13:35Trust me, when our contenders face our final game, it's huge.
13:38It's awesome.
13:39It's the eliminator.
13:40And it's next.
13:41Don't lose.
13:45Hey, you guys.
13:46Go get a regular-sized piece of paper,
13:48and when we come back,
13:49I'll show you how you can fool your brain into thinking there's a hole in your hand.
14:00Okay.
14:01Welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
14:05Don't try to adjust your TV.
14:07I'm just giving you a little example of the way that we see.
14:11Because if you think about it,
14:12our eyes are like two miniature cameras,
14:14and each eye sends its own picture to the brain,
14:17which takes these two pictures and combines them into one picture.
14:20We kind of take this for granted and don't think about it because most of the time,
14:24our eyes see two slightly different versions of the same picture.
14:29And the brain has an easy time turning them into one picture.
14:32But what happens when your brain has to deal with two totally different pictures?
14:37Well, that's what your piece of paper is for.
14:40Roll the piece of paper up into a tube and hold it up to one eye.
14:44Now, put your other hand right up against the side of the tube near the end.
14:48Keep both eyes open and slide your hand along the tube until it's pretty close to your nose.
14:53Now, your two eyes are sending two different pictures to your brain.
14:56But your brain has somehow turned it into one picture.
14:59That's its job.
15:00So what do you end up seeing?
15:02Your hand with a hole in it.
15:05So you see, your brain really does a very complicated job every time you...
15:10Okay, guys, you can stop that now, all right?
15:12Oh, very funny.
15:14Look, cut it out, okay?
15:15Stop.
15:15You're making me dizzy, okay?
15:17Forget it.
15:18I'll see you guys later.
15:19Go away.
15:20This bit is over and we're through now.
15:22So leave me alone.
15:23Go bother Ryan, okay?
15:25All right.
15:26Now I quit.
15:27So stop.
15:28Stop.
15:30I'm through.
15:32Goodbye.
15:33Later, okay?
15:36All right, welcome back for the third and final round of Gladiators 2000.
15:40We have saved the best for last.
15:41It's time to play the Eliminator.
15:44Let's take a look at how the Eliminator is played.
15:48The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
15:50Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
15:54To add 25 points to your score, you choose the correct answer by selecting one of two paths
15:58through the treacherous ball pit.
16:00Next, a razor-sharp high-speed turn and a jump that takes you down to the question room.
16:04For our second question, a wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
16:08But get it right and earn 25 points and move quickly to tag your partner.
16:11Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles on their way to question number
16:15three.
16:16Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall and then racing up
16:19the moving treadmill.
16:20It'll take skill and balance to get to the top, where the final question board awaits our
16:24contender.
16:25Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes for a ride through the barrier
16:29to the finish line.
16:29The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points, which should determine
16:34who wins today's super cool prize package.
16:40So now it's time for the Eliminator!
16:45Oh, I love it!
16:47Since the blue team is behind, they're going to start us off.
16:49Johnny's going to take the first leg to race, and midpoint he's going to tag off to Julie.
16:53And over there, ready to go, she's got her feet in place.
16:55It's Peggy Odita starting to race.
16:58Peggy hit it!
17:02We're off!
17:06Going up the ladder now to the slide, down to the ground, the rings.
17:10Here goes Johnny!
17:12Shweet, swing, shweet, swing.
17:15Over the pit.
17:16We don't want him to fall down because it's going to cause lost time, and it's just not
17:19a good thing.
17:20But why talk about that?
17:22Let's do the question.
17:22What book mainly contains maps, with the stars or an atlas?
17:25And he chose atlas, which is the correct answer.
17:27Almost jumped across that day.
17:28He did really well with that.
17:29Nice.
17:30Into the second part.
17:31Almost again.
17:33Like a leapfrog.
17:34Johnny the Leap.
17:35He's not thinking too far as his ball.
17:36No, he's not.
17:37He would never do that.
17:38He wouldn't dare.
17:39All right, here we go now.
17:40Second question worth 25 points.
17:41One definition of abominable is either scary or disgusting.
17:45Disgusting right answer!
17:47Tagging now, Julie.
17:49Julie going to pop it up over the boat.
17:51Oh, there she goes.
17:52A little bit of trouble over the map, but she's doing well at the end.
17:55A round of the next question, and it says, the drug found in tobacco that can cause cancer
17:59is either tar or nicotine.
18:00Nicotine, car, breakfast, answer!
18:02Looks like she's almost got the wall.
18:04Not a problem for her.
18:06Oh, so close!
18:07It slid right back down.
18:08Okay, here she goes now.
18:09Get psyched up, pumped up.
18:12Come on, Julie.
18:13Hockey seat coach and her launch owner, what to do.
18:15What's the key?
18:15The key is launching.
18:16You've got to launch off the ground.
18:19Got it, woman.
18:20I mean, come on, you can get over there.
18:21Almost does a split to get over the top.
18:22She did it, though.
18:24To the treadmills.
18:25Here she goes.
18:26She's got to be tired.
18:27You've got to be tired.
18:27This is a tough course.
18:28You've got several tries at that wall.
18:30She's keeping her head up here.
18:32She's definitely keeping her head up.
18:34One of the keys a lot of runners use is you pump your elbows harder and faster, and
18:37your legs will go harder and faster.
18:39I just made that up.
18:41The treadmill is difficult.
18:43It's a lot more difficult than it looks.
18:44Here she goes now again.
18:45Pump, move, go.
18:46Come on, Julie.
18:47There she goes.
18:48She's keeping her head up.
18:49She's got her eye on the next question.
18:50She's moving her elbows.
18:51She's almost there.
18:52And she's to the top left.
18:52Yes, all right.
18:53Here it is.
18:54Which has a positive charge, proton or neutron?
18:57Or maybe even a crouton.
19:00She chose the correct answer, which is proton.
19:02Way to go, Julie.
19:03Ryan's killing himself.
19:04All right, Julie.
19:06Good job, Julie.
19:09Come over here, guys.
19:10Nice work.
19:12Nice work.
19:13Give me a quick five.
19:13Give me a quick five.
19:14What did you say, Hawk?
19:15She never quit.
19:16She never did.
19:18Super fight.
19:18Super fight.
19:19Peggy's got the score, Peg.
19:21The blue team answers all four questions correctly for a score of 100 points.
19:26They finish with an Eliminator time of 2 minutes and 23 seconds.
19:32All right, let's go to the starting line for round two of the Eliminator.
19:35Ozika is standing by for the first phase.
19:38Then in the middle, awaiting the tag, you got Taylor.
19:42Peggy, let's wait no longer.
19:44Kick it.
19:47Sabre coaching him along.
19:48And here we go, folks.
19:53You're watching this all over the country.
19:55You're thinking, gosh, how sweet it must be to be out there on the Eliminator.
19:57I'm here to tell you, it is sweet.
20:01He's flying across those rings.
20:03Nice stroke there.
20:04It's almost like the freestyle he used to swim when I was a tyke.
20:07Go, Ozika.
20:08It's your birthday.
20:09Go, Ozika.
20:10Okay, first question.
20:11Today's the one.
20:12What book mainly contains maps?
20:14The stars are an atlas, and he chose atlas.
20:16He's correct.
20:16Yes.
20:17I'd like to call it the Sea of Spears.
20:21Whatever he called it, he made it across there really quick.
20:24Or even the Ocean of Orbs.
20:26Oh, my goodness.
20:29Go, Ozika.
20:30Come on now.
20:31He's on to the second question.
20:32Work with me here, Ryan.
20:33All right.
20:34Here's a question.
20:35One definition of abominable is up.
20:37No, that's wrong.
20:38Is scary or disgusting?
20:39Scary is wrong.
20:40That means lost time because we had a locked door.
20:42Abominable is disgusting.
20:44They're tagging up.
20:45Taylor now does a little, just like the Curly Q roll spiral spin move.
20:51People are lost, doesn't that?
20:52Next question.
20:53The drug side of tobacco that can cause cancer, tar, nicotine.
20:56Nicotine, that's right.
20:57Yes.
20:58On the wall, upper body, poor break.
21:01Did you see that?
21:03So sweet.
21:04Taylor, mighty, mighty, mighty.
21:06Up to the top.
21:07Here we go.
21:07Last question.
21:08Balanced attack.
21:08Which has a positive charge of proton or neutron, and she chose the correct answer, which is proton.
21:13Taylor.
21:15She flew up that treadmill.
21:17Good job.
