NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he was “very happy” with Germany’s decision to introduce voluntary military service as part of its national defense strategy. The move, announced by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, aims to increase troop numbers from 180,000 to 260,000 by the early 2030s. During his visit to the Geilenkirchen air base, Rutte praised Berlin’s commitment to strengthening NATO readiness amid Europe’s changing security landscape.

01:42to make sure that these planes fly safely, they are our ears and also, let's say, our eyes
01:49when it comes to protecting NATO airspace.

02:10Well, you know, each country decides for themselves how to deal with the question of getting enough
02:15men and women into the military.
02:17But I'm very happy to hear that the coalition here in Germany has now agreed, as I understand
02:23it, on the way forward.
02:25And that is very important, that there is a political agreement, political einigung.
02:30And I think you have achieved it now in the Berlin coalition.
02:34So it's up to each nation how to deal with this, but obviously, as NATO Secretary General,
02:39I'm always happy when decisions are taken to get more people involved in our military.
