NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he was “very happy” with Germany’s decision to introduce voluntary military service as part of its national defense strategy. The move, announced by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, aims to increase troop numbers from 180,000 to 260,000 by the early 2030s. During his visit to the Geilenkirchen air base, Rutte praised Berlin’s commitment to strengthening NATO readiness amid Europe’s changing security landscape.
