NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reassured Romania that the alliance would defend the country with its full military power if attacked, following recent concerns over U.S. troop reductions on Europe’s eastern flank.
Speaking ahead of the NATO-Industry Forum in Bucharest, Rutte said that any attack on Romania would trigger the full weight of NATO’s air, naval, and land forces, emphasizing the alliance’s commitment to collective defence under Article 5.
The comments come after Washington’s decision to scale back its military presence in the region, including at Romania’s Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. Rutte urged observers not to overreact to the troop adjustment, calling it a “normal reallocation.”
