00:00NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was received in Berlin by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

00:08Given Russia's continued aggression in Ukraine and its escalating hybrid attacks on Europe,

00:13NATO's European partners need to adopt a common strategy.

00:17We know that we have to do much more in Europe than in the past.

00:23This is on the NATO-Gipfel in the hometown of General Secretary of the NATO in Den Haag.

00:29However, the EU faces a significant challenge.

00:32US President Donald Trump recently announced that he wanted to scale back from security commitments in Europe,

00:38requiring EU member states to bolster their own defences.

00:42Politically, Europe must also speak with a more unified voice.

00:46The first draft of the US-authored peace plan largely excluded Ukrainian and European interests,

00:52and the EU was initially not involved in the negotiations.

00:55I have pointed out that the European Union as an institution in Washington

01:01is obviously not properly organized.

01:03I have tried to explain President Trump in June the history of the European Union and its foundation.

01:10However, the US government is obviously very hard to understand the European Union as a stable
