00:00From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Matthew Broderick, star of Now You See Me, Now You Know, actor Dave Franco.
00:18An old new, closer look.
00:25And now, Seth Meyers.
00:27Good evening, everybody. I'm Seth Meyers. It's Late Night. We hope you're doing well.
00:31And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:33President Trump was set to hold a private dinner tonight with finance industry executives at the White House.
00:39And the guest list reportedly included the CEOs of J.P. Morgan, Chase, Nasdaq, Blackstone, BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs.
00:46In a related story, Bernie Sanders exploded.
00:50During a Veterans Day event yesterday at Arlington National Cemetery,
00:54President Trump criticized political correctness.
00:57Well, I mean, we all know he's not a fan of being woke.
01:03President Trump this week unveiled his long-promised health care plan,
01:07because if there's one thing he cares about, it's your health.
01:12That's right, President Trump.
01:14President Trump laid out his vision for an alternative health care plan to Obamacare,
01:18which he criticizes, quote,
01:19horrible health insurance at a very high price,
01:22which, incidentally, is the current slogan for Cobra.
01:28In a new interview, Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked President Trump
01:31if the gold decorations in the Oval Office are from Home Depot.
01:36Also, if Stephen Miller was from Spirit Halloween.
01:38President Trump this week proposed a new 50-year mortgage for homeowners.
01:45What? Who plans on being in the same house in 50 years?
01:49Oh, God, he's not leaving, is he?
01:53He's not leaving.
01:55House Democrats today released emails in which Jeffrey Epstein
01:58says that President Trump, quote,
02:00knew about the girls.
02:02It's what Chuck Schumer is calling strike one, Mr. President.
02:06Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman yesterday published his new memoir.
02:11It's easy to find.
02:12It's the only hardcover without a jacket.
02:20It's book comedy.
02:23Disney is set later this month to launch its new Destiny cruise ship,
02:26which is more than 1,100 feet long
02:28and can carry up to 4,000 pathogens.
02:31And finally, the fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken
02:38is unveiling a new menu
02:39in honor of the Netflix series Stranger Things,
02:42including a 12-piece nuggets that you would swear was 25.
02:48Those kids aren't playing D&D anymore.
02:52That was a monologue, everybody!
02:55We got a great show for you tonight.
02:57You know him from iconic films
02:59like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Election, and so many more.
03:03He's also a Tony Award winner
03:04who's soon to be starring in Tartuffe,
03:06which begins performances November 28th
03:08at the New York Theatre Workshop.
03:10Matthew Broderick is here, everybody!
03:13I'm never not excited to see Matthew.
03:16And he is an Emmy-nominated actor
03:18you recently saw in the studio
03:20and films such as Together and The Disaster Artist he stars
03:23in Now You See Me, Now You Don't,
03:25which is in theaters this Friday.
03:26Our friend Dave Franco is also back on the show.
03:30Thrilled he's here.
03:32Before we get to all that,
03:34Congress was set to reopen the government
03:36on Wednesday night after Democrats caved,
03:38which is a win for Republicans.
03:39But on the other hand,
03:40now that the government is reopening,
03:42the House is on the verge of forcing a vote
03:44to release the Epstein files
03:46against President Trump's wishes.
03:47President Trump, any comment on that?
03:49Shut it down.
03:50So, wait.
03:53We just opened it back up.
03:54You need to make up your mind.
03:55For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look.
04:01The government has been shut down for over 40 days,
04:04but that has not stopped Donald Trump
04:05from continuing his project
04:07of turning the White House into a pharaoh's tomb.
04:10He took Fox host Laura Ingraham on a tour,
04:13and you could tell he was very proud
04:15of all of his redecorating.
04:16Take a look at this, fellas.
04:18You want to see detail.
04:19So, like this sign.
04:21Most people would just do a sign.
04:22They paint it on the wall.
04:24So, that's half-inch thick bronze
04:27carved by a very talented person.
04:31And it's brass.
04:32It's pure brass.
04:33It's half-inch thick brass.
04:36And you can't just do that.
04:37That's, you know, you look at that.
04:39That's quality, right?
04:40Cool, cool.
04:41But is it bronze or is it brass?
04:44Did you get confused?
04:46Wait, hold on.
04:46That's brass.
04:47I'm bronze.
04:48And also, with respect, it is not quality.
04:52This looks like the entrance to a 55 and over community.
04:56The same guy who did your sign
04:58also did the Glendale estate.
05:01This is the kind of decor you see at a restaurant
05:03that has a fish tank in the waiting area.
05:05That's probably the next thing Trump is going to add
05:07to the Oval Office.
05:08It's an honor.
05:10Honor to have the president of Finland here with us.
05:12We'll be discussing trade.
05:13But first, he can pick whichever lobster he wants.
05:17Also, can we please go back to this part?
05:19Most people would just do a sign.
05:20They'd paint it on the wall.
05:21No, they wouldn't do that.
05:23Nobody ever painted directly on the wall of the White House.
05:27And if they did, they certainly wouldn't write
05:29the Presidential Walk of Fame
05:31because that is a dumb thing.
05:32For over 200 years, the White House
05:35has been a place of quiet dignity
05:36with its subtle grandeur and neoclassical style,
05:39and Trump turned it into a celebrity center.
05:42But don't worry, Ingram followed up
05:44with the hard-hitting questions.
05:46Where are your speakers?
05:47Because I heard this...
05:48All here.
05:49They're in the bushes?
05:50They're all, yep, they're all here.
05:53When did you decide you were a frustrated DJ?
05:55How long ago was that?
05:57I don't do that much,
05:57but I think having good sound is important.
06:01Wow, that is a pretty sassy question.
06:02That's something my wife would ask me
06:04if I disappeared for an hour during a party.
06:06Where have you been?
06:07I was making the playlist.
06:08Oh, I forgot.
06:08You're a frustrated DJ.
06:11Forget it.
06:12I'm going back to my man cave.
06:14If you're looking for me, follow the sign.
06:18But whatever you think of Trump's redesign,
06:20Ingram was floored by his mastery of the details.
06:23Okay, I've been to the White House
06:24I don't know how many times.
06:26I didn't know most of that.
06:28I was fascinated by it.
06:29And the attention to detail is,
06:32I don't care what you say.
06:34You like it, you don't like it.
06:35Okay, he has enormous talent.
06:37I thought it was really cool.
06:38Attention to detail.
06:39We talking about this guy?
06:40The bronze brass guy?
06:43Who said it had been carved by a person?
06:47Also, is this why we elected him?
06:49So he would pay granular attention
06:50to the details of the house
06:52only he's allowed to live in
06:54and nothing else?
06:55But Ingram is right.
06:56Say what you will about Trump.
06:58When it comes to remodeling,
06:59he knows all the fine points.
07:01Ask him any questions.
07:02He knows the answer.
07:03That's the same stone as the White House.
07:04So now you can have news conferences.
07:06You know, nobody could stand in the mud.
07:08Where did you get the stone?
07:11Different places.
07:12You know, yeah.
07:15Different place.
07:15Rocktown.
07:18Stoneworld.
07:19I think we got some at Stoneworld.
07:22I'm a value chopper at Stoneworld,
07:24so I guess.
07:25Not sure what I enjoy more,
07:27the fear in his eyes
07:28as he says different places
07:30or the hand gesture he makes
07:32while he says it.
07:33You know.
07:35If you don't know,
07:36that's the international symbol
07:37for when Masons get rocks
07:39from multiple quarries.
07:40A little from this one,
07:41a little from that one, you know.
07:43It's also fun when someone
07:44giving a softball interview
07:46doesn't realize they're about
07:47to accidentally throw
07:48a 100-mile-per-hour fastball
07:50because Trump is talking
07:51out of his ass.
07:52You know, we're thinking about
07:53having Melania's birthday out here.
07:55Oh, when is her birthday?
07:56You know, when isn't it?
08:00So this is what Trump was focused on
08:02while the government was shut down,
08:03which is why his party got crushed
08:05in last week's elections
08:06and why his poll numbers are abysmal.
08:08People are finally seeing the gap
08:10between what Trump pretends to care about
08:11and what he actually cares about.
08:13The Democrats were finally winning
08:14the messaging war.
08:15Or, as Maine Senator Angus King put it,
08:18Democrats took the L.
08:20Standing up to Donald Trump
08:21didn't work.
08:22It didn't?
08:23It seemed like it was working to me.
08:25Democrats were finally winning elections
08:27while Trump was wandering around
08:28the White House
08:29like a property-only child.
08:32By the way,
08:33even if you think it didn't work,
08:34don't say that out loud.
08:36How are you this bad at politics?
08:38Just say Republicans were willing
08:40to harm people and we weren't,
08:41so we had to let this one go.
08:42Can one of King's colleagues
08:44please debunk this nonsense?
08:46Senator Angus King was asked
08:47this morning to respond
08:48to your criticisms of the Democrats
08:51who voted yes last night.
08:53He said his response was,
08:54what's your strategy, man?
08:55And, quote,
08:56standing up to Donald Trump
08:58didn't work.
08:59Well, I think maybe Angus
09:02didn't notice the elections
09:03on Tuesday.
09:04I thought that they worked pretty well.
09:06Maybe Angus is not noticing the polling.
09:09I think the Republicans
09:10are on the defensive
09:11and, in my view,
09:13it was the vote
09:14that Angus cast
09:16was the wrong vote.
09:17First, Bernie never seems
09:18to enjoy anything,
09:19but he does seem to enjoy
09:20saying Angus.
09:23Not my favorite thing
09:24that Angus
09:25has ever done.
09:28Second, why are you making
09:28Bernie sit outside?
09:30Was the CNN studio booked up?
09:33Oh, no.
09:34Is Trump remodeling that, too?
09:37Don't be sad.
09:38It's going to be beautiful.
09:39Tapper's new show.
09:40It's going to be all marble
09:41from different places,
09:42and you're going to love
09:43the new logo.
09:45So the government
09:46is set to reopen,
09:47which might seem like
09:48a win for Republicans.
09:49Now, let's check the agenda.
09:51What's the first item in business?
09:52I'm sure it's something
09:53Donald Trump wants,
09:53maybe cutting
09:54environmental regulations,
09:55more tax cuts, perhaps.
09:56In just a few hours,
09:58we know Congresswoman-elect
09:59Adelita Grijalva
10:00will be sworn in,
10:01and she is expected
10:03to tip the scales,
10:04to force a vote
10:05to compel the Justice Department
10:06to release the full Epstein files.
10:08Once sworn in,
10:09Grijalva is expected
10:10to be the final signature
10:12needed to force a vote
10:14on releasing
10:14the Jeffrey Epstein case files.
10:17She told CNN
10:17that releasing the files
10:19is a top priority.
10:21When reached for comment,
10:22House Speaker Mike Johnson
10:23responded,
10:23wait, no,
10:23shut it back down.
10:26Johnson had been using
10:27the shutdown
10:28as an excuse
10:29to put off the Epstein vote.
10:30It's a complicated
10:31procedural issue,
10:32so to jazz it up,
10:33we hired the same guy
10:34who did Trump's redecorating.
10:36House Speaker Mike Johnson
10:37has been suppressing attempts
10:38to vote on releasing
10:39the Epstein files
10:40amid pressure
10:41from Trump's White House.
10:42But a majority of House members
10:44can force a vote
10:44through what's known
10:45as a discharge petition,
10:46which needs 218 signatures.
10:48They were one signature away
10:50when Democrat Adelita Grijalva
10:51won a special election
10:52for an open seat
10:53in Arizona,
10:53but Johnson refused
10:54to swear her in
10:55during the shutdown.
10:56Now that the shutdown is over,
10:57Johnson has no choice,
10:58and once she's sworn in,
10:59she will become
10:59the 218th signature
11:01on the petition,
11:02which would trigger a vote
11:02to force the Department of Justice
11:04to release the full Epstein case files,
11:06which are expansive
11:06and wide-ranging,
11:07and much like Trump's marble,
11:09comes from different places.
11:11We got that from Scroll City.
11:14It's worth the money.
11:16All right, fine, so what?
11:17So the House is now
11:18closer than ever
11:19to forcing a vote
11:20to release the full Epstein files.
11:21Whatever's in there
11:22can't be that bad
11:23for Trump, right?
11:24We do have breaking news
11:25in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
11:29Democrats on the House
11:30Oversight Committee
11:31releasing emails
11:33that they say
11:33were written
11:34by Jeffrey Epstein
11:36that explicitly,
11:38specifically,
11:39mentioned Donald Trump
11:41by name.
11:42House Democrats
11:43released newly obtained emails
11:44from Jeffrey Epstein
11:46alleging that President Trump
11:47spent hours at his home
11:50with one of Epstein's victims
11:52and also, quote,
11:53knew about the girls.
11:55Democrats say the emails
11:56raise new questions
11:57about Trump's ties to Epstein.
11:59They raise new questions?
12:01To me, it sounds like
12:02they answer old questions.
12:03Like, I'm no detective,
12:05but if one of the questions was,
12:06did Trump know about the girls,
12:07and you find an email
12:08from Jeffrey Epstein
12:09that says Trump knew
12:10about the girls,
12:10that sounds pretty damning.
12:11This is like if you're
12:12investigating a murder suspect
12:13and you search their house,
12:15and in the closet,
12:16they have a shoebox labeled
12:17murder weapon inside
12:18on the top,
12:19and on the side,
12:20it says,
12:20yes, that murder.
12:22And then you ask the suspect
12:24where they were
12:24on the night of the murder,
12:25and they say...
12:26Different places.
12:28You'd be like,
12:29Chief, I think we got them.
12:31Of course,
12:32Trump called Epstein
12:32a terrific guy,
12:33and Epstein called Trump
12:34his closest friend of 10 years,
12:35and there's video of them
12:36partying and laughing together,
12:37and this is cool.
12:38We have new technology
12:39that allows us to hear
12:40what Trump was whispering to him.
12:42Check it out.
12:43You know, I'm also a DJ.
12:45I made the playlist.
12:47And that's not the only...
12:49That's not the only damning...
12:53I think that might have been me.
12:57I think that might have been my voice.
12:59And that's not the only damning email
13:01released by Democrats today.
13:02These are emails
13:03from Jeffrey Epstein
13:04to Ghislaine Maxwell.
13:05This is one from April 2nd.
13:062011,
13:07and in this email,
13:09Jeffrey Epstein writes
13:10to Ghislaine Maxwell
13:11and says,
13:11quote,
13:12I want you to realize
13:13that the dog that hasn't barked
13:14is Trump.
13:16Of course,
13:16that was in 2011.
13:17Since then,
13:18all Trump has done is bark.
13:19Oh!
13:20Oh, Jeffrey,
13:21had you only lived
13:22to hear him bark?
13:23One would say he even growls.
13:25I mean, look at him.
13:25He looks like he should be
13:26on the White House lawn
13:27snarling at a mailman.
13:30Not only is that
13:31a damning statement
13:32about Trump's ties to Epstein,
13:33it's also an insult
13:34because Trump hates dogs.
13:38CNN is dying like a dog.
13:39I dropped him like a dog.
13:41He's a guy that was thrown
13:42out of his family business
13:43like a dog.
13:44I'm sweating like a dog up here.
13:46They are cheating dogs.
13:47She lied like a dog.
13:49He was fired.
13:51Like a dog, he was fired.
13:52She basically choked and froze
13:54like a dog.
13:56Dogs don't choke,
13:58they don't tell lies,
13:58and they don't get fired.
13:59Even when a dog has a job,
14:01like sniffing for drugs
14:02at the airport,
14:03if they're bad at it,
14:04you just replaced him.
14:05You don't sit him down
14:05and say,
14:06sorry, Rex,
14:07it's just not working out.
14:09Trump claimed his top priority
14:10would be lowering prices
14:11for hardworking Americans,
14:12but instead,
14:13he's spending his time
14:14dodging Epstein questions
14:15and remodeling the White House.
14:16At this point,
14:17to claim that Trump cares
14:18about anyone other than himself,
14:20you'd have to have balls
14:21made of...
14:21Pure breast.
14:24This has been a closer look.
14:25We'll be back
14:30with Matthew Broderick,
14:31everybody.
14:37For more of Seth's
14:38closer looks,
14:38be sure to subscribe
14:39to Late Night on YouTube.
14:50Our first guest tonight
14:51is a Tony-winning actor
14:52you know from films
14:53like Ferris Bueller's
14:54Day Off, Election, and Glory,
14:56as well as shows
14:56like Painkiller.
14:57He stars in Tartuffe,
14:58which starts performances
15:00November 28th
15:01at New York Theatre Workshop.
15:02Please welcome back
15:03to the show
15:03our friend Matthew Broderick,
15:04everybody!
15:20Hello!
15:21How are you?
15:23Hi, how are you?
15:24I'm very excited
15:24that you're here.
15:25You are?
15:26Yeah.
15:26That's nice.
15:27I'm very excited.
15:28You got another play
15:29coming out
15:29that's very exciting.
15:30Yes, I do.
15:31Indeed.
15:32I have a play, Tartuffe.
15:33Tartuffe.
15:34This is a very famous play.
15:35Yes, it's 361 years old.
15:37Yeah.
15:38And it's your job
15:39to make it fresh.
15:40Yeah.
15:41But it is.
15:42It's a very...
15:42I think it's forever fresh.
15:43That's why people keep doing it.
15:44You're in rehearsals now?
15:45Is that...
15:46Is it...
15:47I'm calling it correctly, right?
15:48Previews haven't started.
15:49No.
15:50So, your rehearsals,
15:51how do you feel like it's going?
15:52So-so?
15:53Yeah.
15:53Yeah.
15:54No, no.
15:55It's going good.
15:56It's great.
15:57It's the best thing I've ever done.
16:00But is So-so a good place
16:01to be right now?
16:02Like, genuinely.
16:03Like, you've done this a lot.
16:05Like, you don't want to be...
16:05You don't want to be peaking right now.
16:07No.
16:07Yeah.
16:07No.
16:08Yeah, and we're not.
16:09So, that's good.
16:11Yeah, it's week three of rehearsal,
16:13which is people trying to remember lines.
16:16Yeah.
16:16And, you know,
16:18we did a little run-through
16:19for designers the other day,
16:21and David Cross is in it.
16:23Yeah.
16:23The great David Cross.
16:24He's fantastic.
16:25And he hasn't...
16:26I don't think he's done, like,
16:28a regular play,
16:29or at least not in a very long time.
16:30So, we did it,
16:32and, you know,
16:32it went the way these things go,
16:34with concerned looks
16:35and us stumbling around.
16:37And afterwards, he said,
16:39Is it always...
16:40Is it normal that it's that bad?
16:42Yeah.
16:43Yeah, it is pretty.
16:44That's good.
16:44So, he has to turn to you,
16:46because you're kind of like
16:47the old pro at this.
16:47I'm the veteran.
16:48Yeah.
16:49Do you enjoy your veteran status?
16:51Why, sure.
16:52Yeah, anything to help the young'uns.
16:55Yeah, yeah, the young'uns,
16:56like David Cross,
16:56the other covers.
16:5817th century play.
17:00Is it costumes?
17:02Is it wigs?
17:02Yes.
17:03I will have a wig.
17:04Are you excited about that?
17:05Yeah, very.
17:06Okay.
17:06I haven't seen it yet,
17:07but it's very long.
17:08Okay.
17:09Long hair.
17:09I can't wait.
17:11And I have, you know,
17:1217th century
17:14silk,
17:16I think it's silk,
17:17outfit and tights.
17:18Great.
17:18I have shoes with buckles on them.
17:20Does this all,
17:21do you feel like this helps you
17:22as an actor find your way into a role,
17:24or do you just like it
17:25because it's fancy?
17:26Both.
17:27I do like,
17:28I like that it's fancy mostly,
17:30but I also,
17:31yeah,
17:32I think the costumes make the man,
17:34you know,
17:34it's once you have that,
17:35you're like,
17:36oh, it's this kind of guy.
17:37Yeah.
17:38Before the costumes come,
17:39I really don't know.
17:40Yeah.
17:41Well, if I went to see Tartuffe
17:42and you were dressed the way you are now,
17:44I'd be very disappointed immediately.
17:46Why?
17:47Yeah.
17:48Yeah.
17:49Well.
17:50Yeah.
17:50I'm excited.
17:51I am too.
17:52The last time you were here,
17:53you were talking about Plaza Suite.
17:55You were on stage with your wife,
17:56Sarah Jessica Parker,
17:57and we talked about,
17:58you had a mishap early on
18:02where you went through a door
18:03that was not supposed to open.
18:04Yes.
18:05Yeah.
18:05Yes, I did.
18:06And you had another one
18:07later in the run.
18:08Yeah.
18:08Which is maybe more embarrassing.
18:10It's a worse story for me,
18:12I guess.
18:12Yeah.
18:12Yeah, we were a few,
18:16a month or a few weeks
18:17into the run or something,
18:18and the first play is rather serious,
18:21you know,
18:22when we were talking about our marriage,
18:23which is ending, you know,
18:24or seems to be dissolving.
18:26And I kept hearing, like,
18:28please set your parameter
18:29or, you know,
18:31want to go for a run or,
18:35you know, like,
18:36a phone,
18:37somebody's phone was talking.
18:38Yeah.
18:39And, you know,
18:39we're trying to do
18:40a pretty serious scene,
18:41and I keep hearing it talk and talk,
18:45and then I look at,
18:47I'm like,
18:47I'm going to tell somebody
18:48in the audience,
18:49you know,
18:49turn that off.
18:50Yeah.
18:50They should know better.
18:51And Sarah was, like,
18:53looking at my wrist.
18:56Now, why is she,
18:59what are you looking at my wrist for?
19:00There's some phone going off.
19:01What are you looking at my wrist?
19:02But, yeah,
19:03I had left my Apple Watch on,
19:06which was just, uh,
19:08just blabbering away.
19:09Just kind of falling to it,
19:09just blabbering away.
19:10Yeah.
19:11I don't know why it was talking.
19:13It doesn't normally talk that much.
19:15I like it if it were just sentient.
19:16It's like,
19:17is this a play?
19:18Am I in a play?
19:18My big chance.
19:20Yeah.
19:20This is my first play.
19:22Oh, yeah.
19:24That's why it kept repeating itself.
19:26It was like trying again.
19:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:28Delivering.
19:28I hope you two get back together.
19:30Yeah.
19:31Just like,
19:31becoming a part of the scene.
19:33Have you had,
19:34I mean, again,
19:34I think, like, people,
19:36you've been at this a long time.
19:37Have you had mistakes
19:38over the years on stage?
19:40Yes.
19:40And again,
19:40not because you're bad at it,
19:41just because you've had so many,
19:43you've been in so many plays.
19:45You're going to have flubs.
19:46Yeah, I have flubs.
19:48I've been in a lot,
19:49and I am bad at it.
19:52And, uh,
19:53I mean,
19:54well, let's see,
19:55I often forget that my,
19:57and have my glasses on.
19:58Your own personal glasses.
20:00Yes.
20:00I very often had a
20:01very carefully planned costume
20:03and then just come out
20:04in my own glasses.
20:05Gotcha.
20:06And, uh,
20:07which is worse
20:08if you're wearing
20:09transition lenses.
20:10Okay.
20:11Because the, uh,
20:13lights hit you
20:13and, uh,
20:14they become sunglasses.
20:15So, yeah.
20:16So it's bad enough to...
20:17Jack Nicholson
20:18at a basketball game.
20:19Yeah.
20:20So first you walk out
20:22and the whole audience is like,
20:23oh, I don't remember
20:23this character having glasses.
20:24And then,
20:25while you're in the scene,
20:26they turn into sunglasses.
20:28And that's probably
20:28when they all collectively
20:30are like,
20:30oh, those are Matthew's glasses.
20:31He's an idiot.
20:32Yeah.
20:32Yeah.
20:33No, it's very embarrassing
20:35when that happens.
20:36It's happened a few times,
20:37the glasses.
20:37And I always think,
20:39has anybody noticed
20:39that I have these?
20:40Maybe I could take them off.
20:41Nobody's seen them,
20:42but I think...
20:42Yeah.
20:43They probably do see them.
20:44Yeah, I think.
20:44I'll tell you,
20:45historically,
20:46I notice them right away.
20:47Yeah.
20:48When someone in a play
20:49is wearing them,
20:49I notice right away.
20:50Yeah, yeah.
20:51You, um,
20:52there was an article
20:53about your wife,
20:54about Sarah Jessica,
20:55and she is a judge
20:57for the Booker Prize this year.
20:58This is an incredible,
20:59a literary honor.
21:00And she obviously
21:02is a great reader,
21:03but I did not realize
21:04until I read the article
21:05the burden of reading
21:07she has had to take on this year.
21:09And she's taken it very seriously,
21:10which is a real tribute to her.
21:12She read every book
21:13that she was sent,
21:14and it's 150-something books.
21:16So she has read 100.
21:17Now, how checked out
21:20has she been to, like,
21:20you and the rest of the family?
21:23Completely.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Yeah.
21:26I mean, it's been terrible.
21:27I mean, I will say,
21:28I think she might be
21:29living the dream
21:30because, like,
21:31she's reading
21:31and she has to.
21:33Yeah.
21:33Like, usually,
21:34when my family sees me reading,
21:35they don't, like,
21:35actually think that means
21:36they can, like,
21:37they have to leave me alone.
21:38Right, yeah.
21:39So, but have you all
21:41been very respectful of this?
21:42Very.
21:42Okay, gotcha.
21:43But, yeah,
21:43it was amazing to watch.
21:45She would basically
21:46wake up and start.
21:48And the books were like this,
21:49most of them.
21:50Yeah.
21:50Very thick books.
21:51Yeah, and you can't be
21:52the judge who keeps
21:53picking the short ones
21:54because then they're on to you.
21:56Yeah.
21:56They're like,
21:57which ones do you like?
21:57You're like,
21:58the five shortest ones.
21:59That one, that one.
22:00They're like,
22:00did you read the book, Sarah?
22:02Yeah, no.
22:03She took whatever
22:04they handed her
22:05and she worked so hard.
22:07I'm very proud of her.
22:08That's great.
22:08Has she given you a little...
22:09I would still be working
22:10on one of them.
22:11Did you think?
22:12You're not a fast reader.
22:15Has she given you any...
22:15Who was that again?
22:16Any inside scoop
22:18on which ones she might think
22:20have a shot?
22:20No.
22:21Okay, is that part of it?
22:22Is she sworn to...
22:23Yes, she was sworn to secrecy.
22:24Wow, that's very exciting.
22:25So, she kept the secret
22:27even from me.
22:28Yeah.
22:29Shocking.
22:30Yeah, that's...
22:31I don't care for that.
22:32I feel like she should...
22:32I know, my watch has something
22:33to say about that.
22:34Yeah.
22:37I have a lot more
22:38to ask Matthew.
22:39Welcome back.
22:59We're here with Matthew Broderick.
23:00You've been on stage
23:01with Sarah Jessica, your wife.
23:02Early in your career,
23:04your dad was a stage actor.
23:06Yeah.
23:06And he reached out to you
23:08when you were very young
23:09to offer you a part.
23:09Yes, he did.
23:10How little were you
23:11the first time you asked?
23:12I think I was about seven.
23:14Okay.
23:15Yeah.
23:15And I was at home
23:17and minding my own business
23:18and dad called from where...
23:22He was doing a play.
23:22It was out of town somewhere
23:23and he said, you know,
23:24it's been rewritten
23:25and there's children in it
23:26and great news,
23:27there's a part.
23:29So, if you want to come,
23:31you know,
23:32read in front of people,
23:34you know,
23:35the director
23:36and then an audience
23:37and you'll just be looking
23:39at a piece of paper
23:39and I was like...
23:41I burst into tears.
23:42Basically, I was like...
23:44Because it was...
23:44Not because you were happy.
23:45Not because I was happy, no.
23:47You immediately...
23:48Somebody was suggesting
23:49that I was going to have to read
23:51for one thing out loud
23:52and in front of people
23:54and act in a play,
23:55which was absolutely...
23:57But then you still feel that way.
23:58You did eventually find your way
24:00into being in a play with your dad.
24:02I did.
24:02And how was that experience?
24:04It was great.
24:05It was better than that
24:06than the first one.
24:07Right.
24:07You didn't cry through that scene.
24:08I didn't cry.
24:09Yeah, that's great.
24:09And I was 17,
24:11a little more mature.
24:12Yeah.
24:13I better read her.
24:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:15Yeah.
24:16Although, based on what you were saying
24:17last act, still not great.
24:19I just said better.
24:20Yeah.
24:22Yeah.
24:22And...
24:23Yeah, and that was a very good play
24:26by Horton Foote called 1918.
24:30No, it was called Valentine's Day,
24:32that one.
24:32And we were a Southern family
24:35and we had to have a fight.
24:37I was kind of the bad son, you know?
24:39So the dad was real mad at me.
24:41And he'd yell at me,
24:42but like, son,
24:43like in a Southern Texas accent,
24:45you know?
24:46And I could never quite,
24:48I'd just be like,
24:49Dad, don't, you know,
24:50you look,
24:50it's really silly, you know?
24:52You're yelling at me in that accent.
24:54It is funny.
24:54Yeah, like growing up in New York,
24:55and all of a sudden,
24:56your dad's pretending to be from Texas.
24:57You're like, come on.
24:58Yeah, come on.
24:59Yeah.
24:59Although, I am going to start yelling
25:01at my kids in a Southern accent,
25:02see if I have anything.
25:03Yes.
25:03Just any, like,
25:04because I'm not getting through right now,
25:06so I might need to switch it up.
25:07You got to act with your son.
25:09You guys did an episode of Elspeth together.
25:11Yeah.
25:12Amazing.
25:13There's it to you.
25:13How was that,
25:15being on the other side of it?
25:16Fantastic.
25:18Because, you know,
25:19I go to these sets
25:20and do this my whole life,
25:21and, you know,
25:23and to have him come with me,
25:24not just to visit,
25:25but, you know,
25:26we had coffee in the morning,
25:28and our lunch pails,
25:30and all that.
25:31You know,
25:32the soldering iron.
25:33That's great.
25:35And you didn't have to do
25:37a Texas accent,
25:37so that made it more natural.
25:39No, I was so natural,
25:40I don't think my son
25:41thought I was ridiculous at all.
25:43Yeah.
25:43Well, you learned the hard way
25:44how important it was
25:45to not be ridiculous.
25:46All right,
25:47I want to ask about this,
25:47because we've talked again
25:49about my affinity
25:50for Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
25:52And, uh...
25:53Here it is.
25:56And this is great.
25:59You...
26:00You and Alan Ruck
26:02for the first time
26:03since Ferris Bueller
26:04just did a movie together.
26:05Yeah, we did.
26:06That's so...
26:06What was it like
26:07to work with him again?
26:08It was just like
26:09we'd never stopped.
26:10Is that true?
26:11Yeah, we...
26:11It was in Vancouver.
26:13We...
26:14We...
26:14Yeah.
26:15And, uh...
26:15And, uh...
26:17I love Vancouver.
26:19And, uh...
26:19See, I'm wearing a hat
26:20that Canadians are...
26:22Yeah.
26:22You know, that...
26:22Yeah.
26:24And, uh...
26:24Yeah, it was like...
26:26I swear to God,
26:27we do keep in touch
26:28a little bit,
26:29but it was just...
26:30It was like we continued
26:30a conversation that had started,
26:32you know, 40, 30-something years...
26:34Whenever it was.
26:35That's incredible.
26:35A hundred years ago.
26:36I don't know how long.
26:37What a wonderful thing.
26:38Yeah, I love him.
26:39Uh, I have a question.
26:41When did you first show...
26:43Did your kids watch
26:43Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
26:44Was that one that
26:45they were excited to see?
26:46I...
26:47No.
26:48Yeah.
26:48I don't...
26:49Uh...
26:50I don't know.
26:51They were too little for it.
26:53Yeah.
26:53And now they're too big.
26:54Right.
26:54I don't remember
26:55when that happened.
26:56I'm trying to...
26:57It goes like this,
26:57by the way,
26:58ladies and gentlemen.
26:59What's that?
26:59Growing up with the kids.
27:00Yeah.
27:01They just go so fast
27:02and at no point
27:03are they interested
27:03in your work.
27:04Oh, it's gone.
27:05Yeah.
27:06Yeah.
27:07But I...
27:07So my kids are...
27:09My boys are right at the place,
27:10like 9 and 7,
27:11where they're like,
27:11just stuff that's
27:12like a little more adult.
27:13And I'm trying to think...
27:14It's been a while
27:16since I've seen it,
27:16if Ferris Bueller's Day Off
27:17is okay for 9 and 7.
27:19I think perfect.
27:20I think it is too.
27:21I mean, I think they'll be
27:22so enamored with,
27:23like, who Ferris is.
27:24And I think it's safe.
27:25I think so.
27:26Yeah.
27:26This is on you
27:27if it's not, you know.
27:30I don't remember.
27:32Yeah.
27:32But, uh...
27:33It feels like...
27:34It feels like, okay.
27:35It feels like,
27:35you know, not...
27:37Are there, like,
27:38sexist things in it
27:39or something?
27:39I don't think so.
27:40My take is there's
27:41a no from everybody.
27:42So, yeah.
27:43Because there's, you know,
27:44some of these movies
27:44that you grew up loving,
27:45it's not great.
27:46I know. At the time,
27:46you're like,
27:47oh, no, no.
27:49Yeah.
27:50Oh, no, no.
27:51And then you have to pause
27:51it and be like,
27:52no, you both laughed real hard.
27:54Let me tell you why.
27:55Let me tell you
27:56why it was wrong.
27:56Why it's not funny.
27:57Why it's not funny.
27:57Yeah.
27:58And that sort of robs
27:59the whole thing
28:00of a cinema experience.
28:02All right.
28:02I'm very excited
28:03to show them that.
28:04I'm very excited
28:05to see the two of you
28:06back together.
28:07And I'm very excited
28:07to see you.
28:08It's called
28:08The Best Is Yet to Come.
28:09The Best Is Yes to Come.
28:10That's a...
28:11I can't wait to see it.
28:12I can't wait to see Tartuffe.
28:13I'm hearing great things from you.
28:14Thanks.
28:17You guys,
28:17this is Matthew grabbing
28:19Tartuffe.
28:22Performance is starting
28:23November 28th
28:24in New York Theater.
28:25We'll be right back
28:26with Dave Franco.
28:27All right.
28:45My next guest
28:46is an Emmy-nominated actor
28:47you know from shows
28:48like The Studio
28:49and films such as
28:50Together,
28:51If Beale Street Could Talk,
28:52and The Disaster Artist.
28:53He stars in
28:54Now You See Me,
28:55Now You Don't,
28:55which opens in theaters
28:56November 14th.
28:57Let's take a look.
28:58You got one, too.
28:59Hi, I'm June.
29:00Yeah.
29:01Who's she?
29:01Sorry, she's with us.
29:06Where is the time?
29:08Please welcome back to the show
29:30Dave Franco.
29:31How are you?
29:47Everything's going good, man.
29:49I am thrilled to have you here.
29:51I'm thrilled to talk about this movie,
29:53but first,
29:53a belated congratulations
29:54on your Emmy nomination for the studio.
29:56Thank you, thank you.
29:57Fantastic show.
29:59I always suspected
30:01that my first big nomination
30:03would be for playing myself
30:04while inebriated on alcohol,
30:06weed, cocaine, and mushrooms.
30:07Yeah.
30:07Yeah.
30:08They finally wrote a part
30:09that played all your strengths they want.
30:11Exactly.
30:11People on the street now
30:11come up to me,
30:12and they're like,
30:13man, I wish I could party
30:14like you on the studio,
30:15and I'm like,
30:15me too.
30:17We are,
30:18me and my wife,
30:19we are very boring these days.
30:20Yeah.
30:20But, you know,
30:21like, about nine years ago
30:23when we were getting married,
30:24we would dabble a little bit more.
30:26Okay.
30:27And so, at our wedding,
30:29you know,
30:29we passed around a basket
30:30full of weed pens
30:32for anyone who wanted to partake.
30:33Very nice.
30:34Very appropriate, too,
30:34because we had the reception
30:36at a pizzeria.
30:36Okay.
30:37Win-win all around.
30:38All right.
30:39And so, as you can imagine,
30:40our wedding was very informal,
30:43very non-traditional,
30:44and so we also didn't plan
30:46for a first dance.
30:47But, you know,
30:48inevitably,
30:48everyone makes it over
30:50to the dance floor
30:50at some point,
30:51and when the bride and groom
30:53arrive on the dance floor,
30:54everyone circles around us.
30:56Yep.
30:56And in that moment,
30:57whatever's playing
30:58becomes our de facto
30:59first dance song.
31:00Forever.
31:01Yes.
31:01It's your forever first dance.
31:03That's right.
31:03So, for me and my wife,
31:05our first dance
31:06was us freak dancing
31:07like teenagers
31:08to A Millie
31:09by Lil Wayne.
31:10Yeah, right.
31:12Very, uh,
31:12very romantic,
31:13and I think we are
31:14the only couple on earth
31:15who can claim that
31:16as our first dance song.
31:17Yeah.
31:17I'm guessing you've never
31:18been at a dinner party
31:19where someone goes,
31:20that was our first dance.
31:21Not once,
31:21and it will never happen.
31:22I will say,
31:23while your friends
31:24and family
31:25were probably watching
31:25you and Allison
31:26freak dance to A Millie,
31:28I bet a lot of people
31:29were thinking, like,
31:29I'm really glad
31:30they found each other.
31:32That is a nice moment.
31:33I never thought of it that way,
31:34but it is very sweet.
31:34Because sometimes
31:35you watch a first dance
31:36and you can see
31:36in the eyes of one of the people.
31:37You know this is not
31:38going to last.
31:39Yeah, this is not my part.
31:39Yes.
31:40This is,
31:40I didn't pick this part.
31:42That's correct.
31:43I also want to say
31:44about the studio,
31:44it must have been so fun.
31:45I mean, obviously,
31:45people you worked with
31:46before, Seth Rogen,
31:47like, Barron Holtz.
31:48It must have just been
31:48such a joy when they were like,
31:49hey, we need you to play you
31:51and we need you
31:51to have a full blast.
31:53I've known this group
31:54for 20 years,
31:55and when that's the case,
31:56you just feel free
31:57to let go and have fun
31:58and do weird things,
31:59and that's when
32:00the best stuff comes.
32:01And when they're just like,
32:02hey, we want you
32:03to be on all the drugs.
32:04There's no limits.
32:05Just go as hard as you want.
32:06I'm like, absolutely.
32:08Keep bringing me back forever.
32:10All right, so,
32:11congratulations.
32:12Now you've seen me,
32:12now you don't.
32:13It's very cool
32:13when a movie becomes a franchise
32:15not based on anything
32:16we knew before.
32:17Congratulations on that.
32:19But this was not the title
32:20that you were pitching.
32:21Oh, right.
32:21Yeah, yeah.
32:22When we first signed on,
32:23it was like the untitled
32:24Now You See Me sequel,
32:25and we were pitching hard
32:27for Now You Three Me.
32:28Right, yeah.
32:29It's right in front of our face.
32:30How could we not grab that?
32:31Nobody's done that before.
32:32You should have done it.
32:33What are we talking about?
32:34And if we get to do a fourth,
32:35I'm already pitching
32:36for Now You See Me,
32:38colon,
32:38for Now You Don't.
32:40If we get to do a fifth,
32:41trust me,
32:42I've already thought about that.
32:43Now You Seenco Me
32:46said it in Latin America.
32:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:48Now, do you think,
32:50are you worried those titles
32:51are so bad
32:52you're disincentivizing
32:53them to make more?
32:54When you say so bad.
32:58Now You Seenco Me.
33:00It rolls off the tongue.
33:01It rolls off the tongue, yeah.
33:03You, we had Isla Fish here.
33:06That's right.
33:07That's right.
33:07And she was saying,
33:09and she made it seem like
33:10everybody on the cast agreed,
33:11there's an escape scene
33:13underwater.
33:14Right.
33:14Everybody sort of said
33:15Wet Dave,
33:16as they sort of call you
33:18when you're underwater.
33:19Yeah.
33:20Wet Dave is super hot.
33:21That was the takeaway.
33:25When she says everyone,
33:26it definitely is just Isla.
33:28Okay, good.
33:28Um, but yes,
33:30it's this interesting thing
33:32where this whole press tour
33:35has kind of devolved
33:35into Isla speaking
33:37about how much more
33:37attractive I am
33:38when I'm wet.
33:39And I keep thinking like,
33:41I keep thinking like,
33:42this can't be the best way
33:43to sell a big budget
33:44studio film these days.
33:46Yeah.
33:46And then a few days ago,
33:48Lionsgate,
33:48who is the studio behind
33:49Now You Seen Me,
33:51they reached out
33:51with this TikTok video
33:52that they made,
33:53and they just wanted me
33:54to approve it
33:54before they put it
33:55on their socials.
33:56And so I'm thinking like,
33:57okay, this is gonna be
33:58like a cool behind
33:59the scenes look
33:59at us doing some
34:00like really difficult
34:01card tricks.
34:01I did something with fire.
34:03I did another one
34:03where I'm blindfolded
34:04and I'm throwing cards
34:05and I'm hitting
34:06a specific target.
34:07And then I opened
34:08the video,
34:09and it's this thirst trap
34:10video of me,
34:12and I'm wet.
34:13And I'm like,
34:14I'm like,
34:16this is living on
34:17Lionsgate's official
34:19TikTok page?
34:20What are we doing?
34:21What are we doing?
34:22I just remembered
34:23yesterday that I did
34:25this show called
34:26The After Party.
34:26Yep, another fantastic
34:28show.
34:29And I play this pop star
34:31and one of his hit songs
34:32is called Duet,
34:33but it's spelled
34:34do, D-O,
34:36space wet,
34:37duet.
34:37And it's about
34:38everything the character
34:39likes doing while wet,
34:41including doing his taxes
34:42and putting on jeans.
34:43But I'm like realizing,
34:45oh, I've been unknowingly
34:46typecast as wet boy.
34:48Yeah, you're the wet guy.
34:49I'm just like looking up
34:51everywhere I go,
34:51thinking there's a bucket
34:52of water about to fall on me.
34:54Your agent calls and is like,
34:55good news,
34:56the character's wet.
34:59I owe you an apology
35:00and I just want to
35:01correct the record
35:02because Isla was here
35:02and she was talking
35:03about how good you look wet.
35:05And sometimes,
35:05you know,
35:06the guest is,
35:07you know,
35:08as magnetic as Isla,
35:09right?
35:09You just are kind of agreeing.
35:10Sure, sure.
35:11And she was like,
35:11you know,
35:12dry Dave's like
35:13an 8 out of 10
35:14and I said 100%
35:15and I want you to know.
35:17I think that's the right.
35:18No, I want you to know.
35:19I think no matter,
35:21you're attending me
35:21no matter the moisture level.
35:24And I was just like,
35:26I got caught up
35:28in supporting her
35:28as a scene partner
35:29and I felt great shame.
35:31That's very kind.
35:32I can't wait to go back
35:33and look just how quickly
35:34you agreed with me.
35:35Oh, yeah, it's amazing.
35:36But I think zoom in
35:37because you're going to see
35:38my eyes know I've told a fib.
35:39I appreciate this.
35:41All right,
35:41so your character is
35:42a card, sleight of hand.
35:44Yes.
35:45And credit to you
35:46as an actor,
35:47like this was not a skill
35:48you had before
35:49the first one.
35:49No, definitely not.
35:50But you have tried
35:50to lean in to make it,
35:52you know,
35:52as authentic as possible
35:53in the era of CGI.
35:55Yes.
35:55So like, you know,
35:56in these movies,
35:57I use cards as a weapon
35:58and so I wanted
35:59to get really good
36:00because if I'm bad,
36:01then, you know,
36:02I'm trying to defend myself
36:03and I'm throwing cards
36:04and they're fluttering
36:04in front of my face
36:05so I really got good
36:07at throwing cards.
36:08And with this new film,
36:09it's like,
36:10okay, what can I do?
36:11And I'm like,
36:11I guess I'll find new ways
36:13to throw cards.
36:14That's exciting, right?
36:15And I am being flippant
36:15about this,
36:16but it like takes
36:16a lot of work
36:17and because we're playing
36:18the greatest magicians
36:19on earth,
36:20you want to be able
36:21to do some stuff practically
36:22so people can believe it.
36:23Well, I will say
36:23the believable part
36:24because I know
36:25that they can make
36:25the cards go
36:26wherever they want
36:27with computers,
36:27but like they can't,
36:28like you would know
36:29from the hands.
36:30Like that's what I like about
36:31that somebody actually,
36:32because I've seen
36:33people throw cards.
36:34It blows my mind
36:35that people can do it well,
36:36but you can actually
36:37do it fairly well.
36:38Pretty well, yes.
36:39Would you do it now?
36:41Yes, sure, sure, sure.
36:42So we're going to do
36:44a quick instruction.
36:45Okay.
36:46We've set up
36:46some targets.
36:47Oh, wow, okay.
36:52So whichever deck
36:53you prefer.
36:55I'll take this one.
36:56Okay, great.
36:56Okay.
36:57All right.
36:57Are we just doing a little?
36:58Yeah, we're just doing...
36:59All right.
37:01I'm still dry.
37:02I'm still dry.
37:03Yeah, still dry.
37:03Okay.
37:04All right.
37:05All right.
37:05So I assume
37:07we're just going to try
37:07to hit it as many targets
37:08as we want.
37:09Okay, yeah.
37:09Let's get this out of the way.
37:09Okay, great.
37:10All right.
37:11Very exciting.
37:12And wait,
37:12I need to teach you
37:13how to do it.
37:13Yeah, yeah, okay, great.
37:14Okay, all right.
37:14Are you ready?
37:15Yeah.
37:15Okay, take it in
37:17your left hand.
37:17Okay, I'm immediately wrong.
37:19Okay.
37:20Take it in your left hand.
37:21These two fingers.
37:21Okay.
37:22Pinch them around
37:23this far corner.
37:24Okay.
37:24Yep.
37:25And here's what's
37:25going to happen slow-mo.
37:27Okay.
37:27So it's like back like this.
37:28Okay.
37:28And then you go down
37:29at the last second
37:30you kind of flick your wrist.
37:31Okay, great.
37:31So it's like...
37:33Oh.
37:34Oh.
37:35Okay.
37:38All right, let's get
37:39a little closer
37:39before we can make
37:40this actually happen.
37:41Okay.
37:41All right.
37:43Ooh, ooh, ooh.
37:45There we go.
37:46There we go.
37:47There we go.
37:49Ooh.
37:51Ooh.
37:51Hold on, hold on.
37:53Ooh.
37:54Ah, come on.
37:56Come on.
38:01There we go.
38:01Oh.
38:02There we go.
38:03There we go.
38:04Ooh.
38:07Oh!
38:09All right.
38:10Now, wait.
38:11Okay.
38:12Okay.
38:13This isn't going to happen.
38:14I want to point it.
38:14The banana's not here
38:15as a reward for Dave.
38:17We didn't tell him
38:18if you get all five,
38:19you get a banana.
38:21Tell us what
38:22you're attempting
38:23to do here.
38:23Cut it in half?
38:24You're going to cut
38:24a banana in half.
38:25All right.
38:27Ooh!
38:28Oh, look at that.
38:29Oh, my God.
38:30I'm telling you.
38:31If you...
38:31Ooh, ooh, ooh.
38:33Ooh.
38:34Whoa!
38:35Oh, my God!
38:36Ooh!
38:37Ooh!
38:38Ooh!
38:40Oh!
38:41Oh!
38:44Oh!
38:44He did it!
38:48That's magic, everybody!
38:51Dave Franco, you guys.
