Is misinformation undermining international relations? Prime Minister Passat-Basasa is calling for vigilance after a CNN report suggested intelligence sharing between the UK and US had been suspended.

The Prime Minister refuted the report, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio's denial of the claims. She condemned the irresponsible reporting, emphasizing the continued collaboration between her government and the U.S. in combating narco-trafficking, guns, and human trafficking.

Rubio asserted the U.S. counter-drug operation will continue as long as narcotics flow – labeling the CNN report as “fake” and blaming agendas of people wanting to make themselves important.

00:00Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Basasa is urging citizens to be vigilant against misinformation circulating online
00:06following what she described as a false international media report
00:11alleging that the United Kingdom had suspended intelligence sharing with the United States
00:16regarding regional anti-narcotics operations.
00:20In a post to her official ex-account this morning,
00:23Mrs. Passat-Basasa reported a video of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio
00:28refuting claims made in a recent CNN report.
00:32She says the story, which was repeated by some local media outlets,
00:36was irresponsibly presented to citizens as fact
00:40and condemned what she described as blatant attempts to undermine her administration's ongoing efforts
00:46to combat narco-trafficking and organized crime.
00:49The Prime Minister reaffirmed her government's close collaboration with Washington,
00:53saying both nations remain united in tackling the flow of drugs, guns and human trafficking in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:01She said, quote,
01:02The Caribbean cannot be called a zone of peace and Trinidad and Tobago will not be one
01:07so long as powerful cartels continue to wreak havoc and destroy lives.
01:12Rubio maintained the U.S. presence was a counter-drug operation directed by their president
01:18and it can stop tomorrow if the flow of narcotics ceases.
01:22There's reasons why we have those assets in the region and that is to collect intelligence
01:25and we're actioning on that.
01:27Obviously, I won't go any deeper when it comes to intelligence matters.
01:30I did see a CNN report yesterday.
01:31I'm not going to go into great detail than to say that it's a false story.
01:35It's a fake story.
01:36And what's happening now is people with a business card that has a government email on it
01:40become sources because they don't know, they're not even in the know.
01:43So they either have an agenda or they want to make themselves important.
01:45And it's been a plague of story after story that's either inaccurate or misleading.
