00:00The now 17-year-old boy appeared here at the Supreme Court where prosecutors and his lawyers
00:07made submissions about his penalty. This comes several months after he pleaded guilty to the
00:12murder of Violene White as well as the unlawful use of her motor vehicle. In February last year
00:18while on bail for other robberies, the teenager stabbed Ms White in the chest at a Red Bank
00:23Plains shopping centre and then stole her car from an underground car park. During the hearing
00:29today the judge received a number of victim impact statements from family members who were present
00:34in court including from Ms White's granddaughter who witnessed the attack. In her statement which
00:39was read on her behalf she said she missed her nanny and still felt unsafe going to that shopping
00:45centre but felt she was brave on the day. Prosecutors described the stabbing as an act of indiscriminate
00:51violence which stole the innocence of a young child. They urged the judge to sentence the teen to
00:57between 17 and 18 years in detention. However his lawyer argued this crime although terrible
01:04was less violent than other juvenile murderers who've received shorter custodial sentences.
01:10It was submitted by them that his sentence should be somewhere between 12 and 13 years.
01:16The teenager will find out tomorrow what the judge decides.
