00:01Last year, the now 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty to Violene White's murder and was ordered to serve 16
00:09years behind bars.
00:11Today, he challenged that sentence.
00:13The teen admitted to stabbing the 17-year-old in the chest at an underground car park at Red Bank
00:19Plain Shopping Centre in February 2024.
00:22At his sentencing, it was accepted the teenager didn't intend to kill Ms White, but he did mean to cause
00:29her grievous bodily harm.
00:31In that context, his lawyers argued the sentence was manifestly excessive and should be reduced.
00:37They compared his case to other high-profile juvenile murders, including that of Emma Lovell, who was killed in Northlakes
00:45in 2022.
00:46That teen received a 14-year sentence.
00:49However, prosecutors maintained 16 years was just and objectively was a more serious case when comparing the circumstances.
00:58Victim advocates say the White family are hopeful the original judgment is upheld.
01:04But they're devastated. It's obvious that they're devastated because they're not here.
01:10They're too traumatized to even attend.
01:12The Court of Appeal has reserved its judgment and will hand it down at a later date.
