00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt. Today we're in West Wales, famous for its beautiful castles
00:08and its links to myths, legends and folklore. And according to some it was also home to
00:14that well-known wizard Merlin. Later I'll be learning about some local traditions
00:21and mysterious objects such as the magic eye and an ancient oak tree. But first let's go bargain
00:28hunting.
00:52Today's Red and Blue teams will be searching for collectibles at this antique centre in the Pembrokeshire
00:57town of Narborough. Both teams have £300 to buy three items with only one hour on the clock.
01:03One item must cost at least £75 and there is my challenge to take care of.
01:09Whoever makes the biggest profit or the smallest loss will be crowned the winners.
01:14Let's meet today's teams.
01:16I'm Adele and I'm Michelle. We're the Welsh Dragons and we're here to play the blues.
01:22That's fighting talk. What kind of team will you be?
01:25A successful one?
01:26Yes we are, we're going to be the best team.
01:28Who's in charge?
01:29Michelle's the boss.
01:31I try not to but yeah I think I have problems here.
01:36What will you be looking for?
01:38Like a bit of pottery, a bit of silver and we're just really going to go for what we like.
01:42Good plan. Those are the Reds, let's see who they're up against.
01:46I'm Sarah. And I'm Pete. We love wacky and weird. Just look at this beard.
01:55It is impressive. What are you into?
01:58Anything to do with cows. Love cows.
02:01And I love skulls.
02:02OK. Well you make a good team.
02:06I'm going to be aware of the time.
02:07And I'll be aware of the cost.
02:09Yes, the money man.
02:10Yes, the money.
02:11Any tactics?
02:12I'm going to try and find something really, really cheap.
02:16Well, good luck. Let's get going.
02:19Hello team.
02:21How are you all?
02:22All excited, ready to go.
02:24Are you competitive?
02:25Oh yes.
02:27We're the most competitive team.
02:28I love the fighting talk. Brilliant.
02:31Now, what's the first thing you need before I set you off?
02:34Money.
02:36Reds, who wants the cash?
02:37Me, please.
02:38Right. Del, I've got £300 for you.
02:40Blues.
02:43You're going to hide it under your hat.
02:44I could do.
02:46There you go.
02:48So that means, Michelle, you get the challenge.
02:50Sarah.
02:51What's the final thing you need?
02:53An expert.
02:55Two fabulous experts waiting patiently for you.
02:58So off you go. Best of luck and have fun.
03:01They've got a great competitive spirit,
03:03but what are they looking for in an expert?
03:05Somebody who's knowledgeable.
03:07Somebody will keep us in line.
03:09Someone will let us be the boss.
03:10And a really good negotiator for their bonus bar.
03:13And the sense of humour.
03:16I hope I've got all three.
03:18For the Reds, it's Richard Madley.
03:19How are you?
03:20Surprise!
03:23And for the Blues, it's Izzy Barmer.
03:25How are you guys?
03:26Yeah.
03:27Right, teams, time to open those challenges.
03:29An item containing red.
03:32That's got to be a lucky colour for us, hasn't it?
03:34So it could be a bit of porcelain, pottery.
03:37An item containing blue.
03:39Ooh, blue for blue team.
03:41Excellent.
03:42Go blue team.
03:44Make it snappy, teams.
03:45Your shopping starts now.
03:46All right.
03:47Time's ticking.
03:48Let's go.
03:48OK.
03:49We got this.
03:50They're off.
03:50We're shopping.
03:51Clock's on.
03:5360 minutes.
03:54And already, the Blues are talking tactics.
03:57So we had a plan to get two really cheap items.
04:01Yes.
04:02Good.
04:03I like this plan.
04:04And then a big spend.
04:04And then spend a lot of time on the big spend.
04:07OK.
04:08Well, Izzy seems happy with that.
04:10Over with the Reds, Michelle seems something red from my challenge.
04:14That's quite nice.
04:16Yeah, drawn by the colour.
04:17What does it say on the label there?
04:18Opaline.
04:20Uh-huh.
04:20Glass vase.
04:22Possibly made in Italy.
04:23Hmm.
04:2450 pounds.
04:25No, I think that's one I'll possibly pass on.
04:28Richard's not keen.
04:30Meanwhile, the Blues have spotted something that could meet their challenge.
04:34They look like they're probably sapphires.
04:37Should we get it out?
04:38Should we ask the dealer for a key and have a closer look?
04:40Yeah, have a look.
04:40Yeah, let's do that.
04:42Whilst the Blues wait for the key, is it time for tea?
04:46An enamel teapot of extraordinary proportions.
04:50That's actually really nice.
04:51Yeah, that's really quirky.
04:53It is, isn't it?
04:53Yeah.
04:54It is priced at 55 pounds.
04:58Now...
04:58What do you think?
04:59It's something like that would make it a lot.
05:00I'd want to buy it for about 30 pounds.
05:0230 pounds, yeah.
05:02Yeah, yeah.
05:03And hoping to make 10 or 15 pounds on it.
05:05But anyway, there it is.
05:06Yeah.
05:07We can look.
05:07It doesn't cost nothing to look.
05:09The pricey teapots are no.
05:11Back to the Blues who are taking a closer look at a ring.
05:15Buy it on, see if it fits.
05:17It's a nice classic style, isn't it?
05:19It is.
05:19So the Bluestones diamonds, sapphires, particularly diamonds, they are, people do like them.
05:23It's a lot of $159.
05:25Yeah.
05:26Yeah.
05:26What kind of money would that fetch at auction?
05:28Maybe 60 to 80.
05:29Yeah.
05:29And on a good day, if two people want it, you might get into three figures.
05:32Yeah.
05:32But we are quite a long way off.
05:34Yeah, we are a long way off.
05:35But what is the best price on it?
05:36I think on this, we could go 130.
05:39You wouldn't go 100?
05:40I don't think they'd go 100, I don't know.
05:42Bad burner.
05:44Good try, Sarah.
05:46Now, what's Richard spotted?
05:47It's actually got a nice old look about it.
05:50Yeah, that is good.
05:51That's true.
05:52It's easy to ignore it, but often these are the little treasures in these, on these days,
05:58things that have been covered up or they're lurking beneath.
06:01Why don't we just take the pieces off it?
06:03Take it off.
06:04Yeah, let's, well, let's have a look at it.
06:05Oh, there's a ticket.
06:07Oh, look at that.
06:09Here is a ticket.
06:10It's a handmade bench and it's 80 pounds.
06:15Hmm.
06:16Hmm.
06:17I'd want to be buying that for you for about 40 pounds to try and make you a 20 pound profit.
06:23Yeah.
06:24So, thanks very much.
06:25We'll just put it back again.
06:28So, while the Reds keep searching, the Blues have found this.
06:33The coat rag.
06:34Ah, OK, so, 120 pounds.
06:37It's not old, it's a modern piece in an older style, but it's certainly got a good look to it.
06:43It's a useful item.
06:45What do you like about it, Pete?
06:47Just its chunkiness, the heft to it.
06:52What do you think?
06:52Ah, it's OK.
06:53Would you have it in your house?
06:54No.
06:56No.
06:56Ah.
06:57Probably not.
06:58Probably not.
06:58You knew Sarah was going to say no.
07:00Yeah.
07:00That's why you like it.
07:01Would, I mean, it's 120 pounds.
07:03Yeah, it's a lot of money.
07:04It is a lot of money.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Yeah.
07:06Yeah.
07:07Should we ask the best price?
07:08No.
07:08No, OK, it's a definite no.
07:10OK.
07:10That's definite, let's wander.
07:12If it doesn't hook you in, move on.
07:16These look colourful, Richard.
07:17It's a group here of three Persian enamel dishes and bowls.
07:24You know, we had to find something with red on it.
07:26If you look hard on this Persian enamel dish, there are flashes of red, aren't there?
07:32Yeah.
07:32And on this shaped oval dish, and again, on this bowl, again, tiny little red flower heads,
07:40the ticketed price for all three, £25.
07:46Ooh, £25.
07:47I'm not sure when it's red and F, Richard.
07:50You know, we've got to satisfy the challenge.
07:52Yes.
07:53The words are an item containing red.
07:56Yeah.
07:56It doesn't have to be hold red.
07:58I don't know if I like them enough.
07:59Mm-hmm.
08:00Mm-hmm.
08:01OK.
08:02Could we come back to them?
08:03I'll go off and just find out if they could be bought for £20.
08:07Yeah.
08:07And if they can be, I'll ask them to put them on hold for us.
08:10OK.
08:10So we've got them on our list.
08:11Yeah.
08:12We could come back later on.
08:12Happy with that?
08:13Yes.
08:13Lovely.
08:14OK.
08:15I'm not sure they're keen, Richard.
08:17Over with the blues, something's caught Pete's eye.
08:20Rather handsome cat.
08:22Do you have cats?
08:24We used to.
08:25We're here for many years.
08:26Oh, he's nice.
08:28Nice cat.
08:28Have a look.
08:29Have a look.
08:30He's got handsome, isn't he?
08:31He's nice.
08:32He's got this crackle glaze on.
08:34I agree.
08:34He's nice.
08:35People love cats.
08:36Yeah.
08:37Yeah.
08:37True.
08:38Good size.
08:38What's the price?
08:40£48 on the ticket.
08:42Well, why don't we ask the best price and just see?
08:44Because then we know where we're at.
08:45Yes.
08:46Yeah.
08:46OK.
08:47Good point.
08:47That's Asadila.
08:48OK.
08:49Whilst the blues get a price for the cat, the reds have spotted something unusual.
08:54Oh!
08:55The red rolling pin.
08:56Yeah, indeed.
08:58Well, I rather like that sort of type of decoration.
09:02These were made in Nailsea outside of Bristol.
09:06These were made in the 19th century and, in fact, they're still...
09:10So, it is quite old then?
09:11Yeah.
09:11Yeah, indeed.
09:12Are they just a decorative item or would they...?
09:15Well, no, they were actually used practically.
09:17They could have been used in the kitchen for rolling out pastry.
09:21And they were very popular, you know, 10, 20 years ago.
09:25I'm not quite so sure today.
09:27I can't see a price on it.
09:29Um, £60.
09:31Let's say it's marked at £60.
09:32We could get some discount on it, but I think it'll...
09:35You'd have to have a lot of a discount to get a profit.
09:37Yeah, we would.
09:38OK, let's go.
09:39OK, right, OK, we won.
09:41Very decisive, Michelle.
09:44Now, what's the news on the cat?
09:45The ticket price is £48.
09:47I think we can definitely do £40 on that.
09:49And the absolute bottom price?
09:51What were you hoping for?
09:53I was hoping it might start with a...
09:55Two. Two.
09:57I can give them a ring.
09:58Yeah, yeah, we'll do that.
10:00Thank you very much.
10:02The cat's not in the bag yet.
10:04And from cats to hats.
10:07There is indeed a red interior
10:09in this 19th century bucket made from a Georgian hat box.
10:14OK.
10:15OK.
10:16It looks like a very posh bucket.
10:17Very posh, isn't it?
10:19It's priced at £80.
10:21And I happen to know that the stall holder has said
10:24that he would discount anything on this stand by 30%.
10:29So, therefore, with an £80 ticket on it, he's knocking off £24.
10:34OK, I think that's...
10:35OK, come on through here.
10:37Anything red through here?
10:39Let's go and have a look.
10:41So, while they keep browsing,
10:43the blues are sticking with their animal theme.
10:45What about this one?
10:46Oh, I see where you're going.
10:48Blue tail.
10:49Look!
10:50Lightroom containing blue.
10:51And it's red.
10:52Red and blue for bargain.
10:53Yeah, absolutely.
10:55I just think he's cute.
10:56Yeah?
10:57Yeah.
10:57I think he's very charming.
11:00Bit of art glass.
11:01It's a glass paperweight.
11:02Yeah.
11:02But it's nice.
11:03Paperweights went through a phase of being extremely popular,
11:05so they're not always sort of the round ones you think of.
11:08You can get them modelled as animals.
11:10But nowadays, I mean, you could have it on a desk,
11:12but I think someone would just have it as a decorative object.
11:14Perhaps someone who loves bunny rabbits.
11:16Yeah.
11:17What's the price?
11:18So, it says ten.
11:19OK.
11:21We're making you work today, Neil.
11:22You are so all right.
11:23Would there be anything you could do for us on that one, please?
11:26I'll tell you what, as it's you, I go nine.
11:29Ooh!
11:30Yeah.
11:31It's also not a lot of money here.
11:32It's cheap.
11:33Ten pounds.
11:34We wanted, we wanted, yeah.
11:35They wanted two cheap items.
11:36We did.
11:36So, he ticks that box.
11:37Yeah, he does.
11:38Yeah.
11:39I think there might be a small profit.
11:40On a bad day, it's five to ten, but on a good day, ten to fifteen, ten to twenty.
11:45Yeah.
11:45We'll take the risk, shall we?
11:46Let's take the risk.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Let's get it done.
11:48Thank you very much.
11:50Thank you, Neil.
11:51Well done, Blues.
11:54Fifteen minutes into your shop, and that's your first item bought.
11:58And it ticks off my challenge of something containing blue.
12:02Now, Adele seems taken by some silver.
12:05Cool little dishes there.
12:06Yes, sweet.
12:07I think they're really decorative.
12:09Yes.
12:09Really, yeah, really sweet.
12:11Very pretty, yeah.
12:12You were drawn to, I could tell.
12:13Yes, yeah.
12:14Straight away.
12:15I really like them.
12:16I think they're really, really pretty.
12:18And the work that's gone into them.
12:19Yes.
12:20With your reaction so far, I feel I've got to go and get the cabinet open.
12:25While Richard finds the key, Sarah has spotted something colourful.
12:29Oh, there'll be Rosenthal, a Rosenthal design.
12:33They used to be collectible.
12:34Nowadays, not so much at auction.
12:36Okay.
12:36You sort of find that you can have a set of them, and they don't do fantastically well.
12:39Okay.
12:40But they're very pretty and decorative.
12:41But how much are they?
12:43£15.
12:44For each of them, I'd imagine.
12:47It's going to be around that at auction in terms of its value.
12:49Yeah, that's fine.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Nice, they've got the original box.
12:53Yeah.
12:54Keep looking.
12:55Meanwhile, the Reds are weighing up those silver dishes.
12:58Are they heavy?
12:59Not very heavy.
13:00No, I thought they'd...
13:01Oh, you thought they'd be heavier, do you?
13:02Yeah, I did.
13:03Yes, indeed.
13:03Yeah, they did.
13:04Well, they are silver.
13:05They're solid silver at £68 before we negotiate,
13:09and that's at £40.
13:10You liked the little one more, didn't you?
13:12Yeah, I just thought he was...
13:13Yeah, yeah, indeed.
13:14Yeah, okay.
13:15But would you like to find out what they could be bought for?
13:17Yes, yeah.
13:18Time to get Neil in.
13:20This one's £68.
13:21I could do you £61 on that.
13:23And then the smaller one is £40.
13:25We'd go £36 on that.
13:26Does £36 work for you?
13:28£36 isn't an increment in the auction room,
13:31so he'd be going £32, £35, £38.
13:34So £36 would be...
13:35So we would need the extra pound.
13:38I know it's...
13:39I'm splitting hairs, but...
13:40Yeah, go on in.
13:41£35, done.
13:41Thank you, Neil.
13:42So...
13:43So do you think there's a bit more of a profit in the £35 one?
13:47Yes.
13:47Yes.
13:47That is better value.
13:49What do you think of that?
13:49Um, yeah, it's right at the top.
13:51I think we have to go for that one.
13:52I could tell you about it.
13:53As soon as I walk past that kind of...
13:55It made you smile, didn't you?
13:56Yeah.
13:56All of a sudden...
13:57Yeah.
13:58Yeah.
13:58Okay, should we buy it?
14:00Yes.
14:00Yes, I agree.
14:01Yeah.
14:01Thank you very much.
14:02Neil, thank you.
14:03We're going to have the little one.
14:04£35.
14:05Sold.
14:06Brilliant.
14:06Well done, Reds.
14:07You got there in the end.
14:09Both teams now have one item each, but with half their time gone, they need to pick up the pace.
14:15Was Sarah spotted for the Blues?
14:18It says it's a Welsh fireside stall, I think.
14:22So you could get two bums on there.
14:23Really?
14:24Couldn't you?
14:24Couldn't get two of mine on there.
14:25Couldn't get two of mine on there, right?
14:26Well, you'd be facing away.
14:28Right.
14:29Come on, we're going to test this.
14:30Carry us.
14:31You and me.
14:32Right.
14:33I'll have the big end.
14:34Okay.
14:35I'll perch myself at this end.
14:36There we are.
14:37Oh, I think we could, actually.
14:38There we are.
14:39We can both put on.
14:40It's not that comfy, though.
14:41I've got the lumpy.
14:42No, it's not.
14:43I think it's a bench for one.
14:44Yeah.
14:45But it's very nice.
14:46So how much is this one?
14:4888.
14:49Right.
14:50Let's see what Neil's at.
14:51Right, let's ask.
14:52While Izzy looks for Neil, the Reds have headed outside.
14:56Oh, look at the crowns.
14:57What do you think?
14:58I do like them.
14:59And I love that rusted, rustic look, don't you?
15:02Yeah, with greens and all that.
15:03I think they're splendid.
15:04I do think they're splendid.
15:05They would be of relatively recent manufacture.
15:08I love the fact that there's three of them there.
15:11Yeah.
15:11I'm hoping we might get more than one.
15:15Yes, yes.
15:15Aren't you?
15:16Yes, it would be.
15:17Yeah.
15:17I've got no idea how much they are.
15:19Do you?
15:20No, I don't.
15:20There's no price on them.
15:22There's no, you know, we're looking to spend £75.
15:25Should we actually go and find out?
15:27Yeah, find out, yeah.
15:27Yeah?
15:28While the Reds get a price for the crowns,
15:31what's the news on the £88 bench?
15:33Yeah.
15:34Yeah.
15:34I could go down to £79 on that one.
15:37Or do you come down to £75?
15:39£75.
15:40Yeah, go on then, £75.
15:43Twisting my arm there, but £75.
15:45We can think about it.
15:46Yeah.
15:46OK, well, we know it's here.
15:47We know it's for you.
15:48Yep, thank you.
15:49Yep, OK, thank you.
15:52It's another maybe.
15:54Back to the Reds and their crowns.
15:56They're £55 each.
15:58OK.
15:58That's the best price today if...
16:02The best, we could probably take £10 off you today, so £40, £45.
16:08And what if we bought two of them?
16:10We could take another £5 off the two, so it would be £85 for the two.
16:14What are you thinking?
16:15I really like them.
16:16I really like them.
16:17Yeah.
16:17Could you come down a little bit more?
16:20That is the price, I'm afraid.
16:21Yeah.
16:22The two at £85 for the pair?
16:24Yeah, I think that's...
16:24One each, yeah?
16:25Yes.
16:25Yes.
16:26We're buying something that you both like.
16:27Is that a real good idea?
16:28Yes, yes, yes.
16:29So should we say that they're sold?
16:31A deal?
16:32Yes.
16:32We have a deal?
16:32Thank you very much.
16:33Thank you very much indeed.
16:35Thank you very much indeed.
16:36Good job, Reds.
16:37That's your big spend sorted.
16:39£85 for the two rustic crowns.
16:42Just 15 minutes left and, Blues, you've only bought one item.
16:46Are you worried, Izzy?
16:48The shop started really well and we all loved the bunny,
16:51but it's gone downhill since then and we haven't really seen
16:54anything that Pete and Sarah love.
16:56I think we might be cutting it to the wire and end up with
16:59two hurried purchases at the end.
17:01So while Izzy cracks the whip, the Reds are focusing on their challenge,
17:06an item containing red.
17:07Well, that particular colour is referred to as cranberry.
17:11So cranberry glass was introduced in the 19th century.
17:16It's just a nice term for red glass.
17:19Can you just tell me from here how much the vase is?
17:24Yeah, first quality and it's got ND £30.
17:28That's either no damage or no discount, £30.
17:31I'm feeling that.
17:32Mmm, but however, I can see you just thinking...
17:36Yeah, it's very decorative.
17:38I think the design is really pretty as well.
17:41And of course, we cannot forget our three Persian enamel dishes.
17:46So we've got a shopping list, we've got 15 minutes.
17:49Shall we go and look at one other item to add to a list?
17:52And then you just choose.
17:53Yes.
17:54Easy as that.
17:54Yeah.
17:55The Reds have a plan.
17:57Now, whatever happened to that glazed cat?
18:00So, were you able to find out the best price?
18:03I have, and very generously.
18:04She said she'll do it for you for £25.
18:06Aww.
18:08What do you reckon, Izzy?
18:08Shall we go for it?
18:09I like it.
18:10I like it.
18:11It's £25.
18:12That's a bargain.
18:12Let's do it.
18:13Let's do it.
18:14Excellent.
18:14Thank you, Neil.
18:15Yeah.
18:17Cheers, guys.
18:17Thank you very much.
18:18Thank you, Neil.
18:19Awesome.
18:20Great work, Blues.
18:22The ceramic cat for £25 is a perfect second buy.
18:26Well, you came here to get a bargain, and I think that might be our bargain of all day.
18:29Yeah, brilliant.
18:30Just your big spend left to find.
18:32Are you thinking the bench?
18:34I'm thinking the bench.
18:35Let's go and see.
18:36OK.
18:37You only have eight minutes left, teams.
18:40Now, Reds, what have you got there?
18:42It's almost like one of those sort of whirly gigs, isn't it?
18:46Yeah, a whirly-go-gun.
18:47A whirly-go-gun?
18:48A whirly-go-gun.
18:49A whirly-go-gun.
18:50A vintage folk art pull-along.
18:53It's £25.
18:54If we got it for 20, everything's going to cost 20.
18:56Do you like that?
18:57I do like that.
18:58Do you like that, Del?
18:59Do you like the whirly-go-gun?
19:00I do like the whirly-go-gun.
19:02Can we try and pull it on the throne?
19:05Of course we can.
19:06We can do anything we want with it.
19:07I'm sure.
19:07I don't know.
19:08We've got to find out here.
19:09Have a look if it works.
19:10Ah, the whirly-go-gun, OK.
19:12Can you see it?
19:13Yeah, well, go on.
19:17Well, you can do the pulling bit, you can't do the whirly bit.
19:20I do like it, but if it's not working...
19:24Leave it then.
19:26The Blues are back at the bench, but are they going to buy it?
19:29We need to spend 75.
19:31It's made in Wales.
19:33I think we should do it.
19:34Let's do it.
19:34Yeah, definitely.
19:36Yes, thank you.
19:37Thank you very much.
19:38Thank you, guys.
19:38Thank you very much.
19:41Yay, we've done it!
19:44Well done, Blues.
19:45That's your final item sorted and your big spin ticked off.
19:48£75 for the wooden bench.
19:52Happy?
19:52Yeah, happy.
19:53Brilliant time.
19:54Awesome.
19:55Shall we go and celebrate?
19:55Yes.
19:56Yeah.
19:56Definitely.
19:59With only five minutes left, the Reds are revisiting their backburner items.
20:03So what's it to be?
20:05The red vase or the Persian dishes?
20:08These.
20:10These in unison.
20:12A decision at last.
20:13The three Persian dishes for £20 take off my challenge.
20:17Nice work.
20:20Right team, shopping is over.
20:22Put them down.
20:23Yeah.
20:23Let's go and put the kettle on.
20:24A cup of tea.
20:25A cup of tea sounds good.
20:27Let's remind ourselves what the red team bought.
20:28Their first buy was the ornate silver dish for £35.
20:36Next, they bought the two rustic crowns for £85, which was their big spend.
20:40And they finished their shop with my challenge, the Persian dishes for £20.
20:48Reds, you were a pair of Welsh dragons on fire today, weren't you?
20:52Yes, we were.
20:53Yes, we were.
20:54Now, Richard, you were not the boss today.
20:56No, they knew what they wanted.
20:57No.
20:58I just followed.
20:58You both.
20:59How was it?
21:00Did you have fun?
21:01We had a fabulous time and Richard got so knowledgeable, it was fab.
21:04Let's talk favourites.
21:05What was your favourite item, Adele?
21:07My favourite item was the silver trinket dish.
21:10Right.
21:10I thought it was beautiful.
21:11OK.
21:12Michelle, what about you?
21:12What was your favourite?
21:13The crowns were my favourite.
21:15Right.
21:15OK.
21:15Now, that was a big spend item.
21:17It was, yeah.
21:17OK, so do you think they will make the most profit at auction?
21:21I don't think so.
21:22I think the silver trinket dish will make the biggest profit.
21:25OK.
21:26Adele, what do you think will make the biggest profit?
21:28I think the silver dish as well.
21:29Oh.
21:30So tell me, how much did you spend in total?
21:32We spent £140.
21:34So you've left Richard £160 if you hand it over.
21:38Yeah.
21:39Quite a lot of cash there, Richard.
21:40There is indeed.
21:41Any thoughts on what you'd do with it?
21:43I'm going to buy something that isn't quite what it appears on first sight.
21:50Oh, I'm intrigued, ladies.
21:52OK.
21:53So while Richard goes off to buy his mysterious bonus buy,
21:56let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought.
22:00They hopped into action buying the rabbit paperweight for £9,
22:03which ticked off my challenge of something containing blue.
22:08Their second buy was a glazed cat for £25.
22:14And they finished with their big spend, the wooden bench for £75.
22:21Blues, you made that look easy.
22:23You found the challenge quickly.
22:25You had lots of options on the back burner.
22:27Did you have fun?
22:28We had fun.
22:29OK.
22:29And how was Miss Balmer with the shopping?
22:31Fantastic.
22:32Fabulous.
22:33Izzy, you look surprised.
22:35No, it was good.
22:36It started out quite chilled and then we just had a little rush at the end.
22:39Yeah.
22:39But all good.
22:40Tell me, what was your favourite item, Peter?
22:42A cat.
22:43You're a cat lover too?
22:44Yeah.
22:45All right, put it there.
22:46Put it there, OK.
22:48Sarah, what was your favourite item?
22:49The rabbit paperweight.
22:51Now, the paperweight was my challenge item.
22:53Yes.
22:53To buy something that contained blue.
22:55But what do you think would make the biggest profit?
22:57The cat.
22:58The cat?
23:00What about you, what do you think?
23:01The cat.
23:01All right.
23:03So how much did you spend in total?
23:05£109.
23:06Right, so you've left Izzy a whopping £191.
23:10Yeah.
23:11Hand it over.
23:12Thank you very much.
23:13Izzy, I hope you've got big pockets for all of that.
23:16What are you planning to do?
23:17I know you were desperate for some silver, so I'm going to see what I can find.
23:20Brilliant.
23:21Well, while Izzy goes off in search of a bonus buy, I'm going to learn about some fascinating
23:25local folklore.
23:26Across the world, every culture has its own stories and superstitions passed down through
23:39generations, from mythical creatures and local legends to magical men and women.
23:45And in this part of West Wales, folklore has played an important role in shaping history.
23:51To find out more, I've come to the Carmarthenshire County Museum to meet folklore
23:56expert, Dr Owen Williams.
23:58Hi, Owen.
23:59Lovely to meet you.
24:00Hi, Ru.
24:00Nice to meet you too.
24:01Thank you for coming.
24:02Now, Owen, why do you think folklore has been so important to people in this part of Wales?
24:07A lot of these stories around folklore are transmitted through the Welsh language.
24:13It's one way of keeping the language alive and part of the intangible heritage that makes
24:18this part of the world so special.
24:19Well, when you think of folklore, you think of stories and superstitions,
24:23but it can also be linked to real physical objects like these, can't it?
24:28Objects derive a lot of their meaning from the stories that are attached to them.
24:33Like this, for example.
24:34It looks like part of a tree.
24:36This is a fragment of an oak tree that was planted in nearby Carmarthen town,
24:42and it's grown to be known as Merlin's Oak by local people.
24:47Merlin as in the wizard?
24:49That's right, yes.
24:51One thing that's been said is that Merlin made a prophecy about this tree.
24:55When Merlin's Oak shall tumble down, then shall fall Carmarthen town.
25:02So the people of Carmarthen thought of it as something sacred.
25:06But sadly, a local man around 1856 decided to poison the tree because local people used it as
25:16a meeting place. He lived nearby and got sick of them discussing their affairs every day.
25:21And did the tale come true? Did Carmarthen town fall?
25:25Well, thankfully not. Carmarthen is still here, luckily.
25:30Now, I never knew that Merlin was thought of as being Welsh, let alone from Carmarthen.
25:35There have been stories dating back over a thousand years that link Merlin to various parts of Wales,
25:43but particularly to Carmarthen. He would probably have been known more as a physician or a prophet, perhaps.
25:52But why do we call him a wizard if he was more of a physician or a prophet?
25:56Because he may well have been somebody who was known as a man of the woods type figure,
26:03who was able to maybe predict weather patterns. And over time, stories got exaggerated.
26:10And so he became associated with magic because that seemed to be the only explanation for people
26:16back in those times.
26:17Clearly, it was a very superstitious time. Why do you think that is?
26:22Well, at the time, of course, they didn't have any newspapers or radio.
26:27So stories were often the ways in which people came to understand the world.
26:33And that's how we got the tales of Merlin that we know so well today.
26:37Were there any folklore beliefs that protected against evil at the time?
26:42Yes, there were many. For example, this was once known as the magic eye.
26:49What is it?
26:50It's actually a potato with matchsticks stuck into it.
26:54So what was it actually for?
26:56Well, it was actually used to protect crops.
27:00Okay.
27:00So this was found in a Carmarthen garden around about 1910.
27:05And it was hung over a patch of peas growing there.
27:09And it was just believed to have protected them against external threats like insects,
27:17birds or even bad weather.
27:19Sort of like a medieval starchy scarecrow.
27:22That's absolutely right.
27:23And this object here had a similar purpose of repelling evil.
27:27Now, what is that? It looks like hair. Is it human hair, animal?
27:31It's actually horse hair.
27:33Horse hair.
27:34It was found hung up on the back of a door in a local town called Larn, only about 20 minutes from here.
27:42It was said to have been hung at the doorway to protect against anything evil coming into the property.
27:51Now, I'm sensing a theme because, you know, this is all about protecting the crops and the home.
27:57Exactly. It was incredibly important to people, especially in a rural area like Carmarthenshire.
28:05Now, we've talked about these small items, but my eyes being drawn to something magnificent and rather large behind me.
28:11This cauldron is believed to have dated back at least to the 1800s in eastern Carmarthenshire.
28:18It was used by a local wise woman to create all sorts of herbal remedies, salves, balms and tonics.
28:28Now, when you say wise woman, do you mean a witch?
28:31Well, funnily enough, no.
28:34OK.
28:34There are actually very few reported incidents of witches in this part of Wales, and indeed in Wales in general.
28:43Women who came up with herbal remedies were known as wise women, and they were very well respected within their communities.
28:52Whereas witches, of course, were seen as people to be feared.
28:55Owen, thank you so much for your time.
28:57I've loved learning about Carmarthens folklore and its medieval beliefs.
29:02But now it's time to see if our teams can conjure up any magic over at the auction.
29:10And for today's sale, I'm staying in Carmarthens.
29:13I've come to meet auctioneer Ian Taylor.
29:16Ian, lovely to see you.
29:17Thank you very much and thanks for coming in.
29:18Now, let's get started.
29:20We've got some interesting items here on the table.
29:22So, the Reds, Michelle and Adele were shopping with Richard,
29:26and their first item is this really sweet Victorian silver pin dish.
29:3218.95, Birmingham silver.
29:34What do you think?
29:35It's really pretty.
29:36Very ornate with a nice pierced decoration there.
29:39A little bonbon dish, and there's always a good market for silver in our auctions.
29:42Sounds good.
29:43But what's your estimate?
29:44Well, we've only put £10 to £15 on it.
29:47OK.
29:47Well, the Reds spent £35 on this.
29:51I think that's going to be difficult to achieve, I have to be honest with you.
29:54I might be a little lost there.
29:56More of a retail price?
29:57I would have thought so, yes.
29:58Now, the second item is this quite quirky pair of decorative crown sculptures.
30:04Would you say that they're fashionable?
30:06They are.
30:06We sell a lot of sort of garden and rustic furniture.
30:09OK.
30:09So, what's your estimate?
30:11We've put £30 to £40 on them.
30:12I do have a feeling that they might make a little bit more than that.
30:15Well, that would be good, because this is their big spend.
30:18OK.
30:18So, £85 they've spent on this.
30:21Yeah.
30:22Yeah.
30:22You never know.
30:23You never know.
30:24I think it's going to be tough.
30:25I think it's going to be tough to get that much.
30:26OK.
30:27Well, fingers crossed.
30:27So, moving on to the last item, which is my challenge, to buy something containing red.
30:32And there's a set of these Minakari Persian enamel dishes.
30:36They are predominantly blue, but there is enough red in there to tick the challenge.
30:40So, they've been quite clever here.
30:42What do you make of them?
30:43They are quite nice and decorative, however, there isn't a huge amount of quality to the
30:50pieces and they're quite light.
30:52OK.
30:52So, what do you think they'll make at auction?
30:54For the three, we've only put £10 to £15 on them.
30:57Right.
30:57Well, they got the three of them for £20, which sounds good, but fingers crossed we need
31:02a bit more, don't we?
31:03Yeah, we could get there.
31:04Right.
31:05OK.
31:05So, that is the red team's items.
31:07Now, moving on to the blue, we've got Sarah and Pete who are shopping with Izzy.
31:12And the first item is the challenge item, to buy an item containing blue.
31:17And we have, ironically, a red paperweight rabbit, but with a blue pom-pom tail.
31:22So, again, they've been creative, haven't they?
31:25I think someone's laughing at my challenges.
31:28So, what do you think of the rabbit?
31:29I think it's quite sweet, actually.
31:30There's not much age to it.
31:32A little modern art-class paperweight or deskweight, whatever you want to call it.
31:36What do you think it will make at auction?
31:37We've put a guide price of £20 to £30 on the rabbit.
31:40Right. Well, that's good.
31:42They only spent £9 on it.
31:43Right.
31:44So, you can't really go wrong with it, can you?
31:46They will definitely make a profit on that.
31:48Fabulous.
31:48Now, this second item is my favourite, because I'm a cat lover.
31:53It's this 20th century ceramic study of a seated cat.
31:57It's looking very peaceful and serene, don't you think?
31:59It's a good size, and it's got this nice sort of salad and glaze, which is always popular.
32:04So, yeah, I think it should do all right as a decorative piece.
32:06So, what's your estimate for Mr. Cat?
32:09We've put £15 to £20 on the cat.
32:10OK. Well, it costs £25, which I think is doable for a profit.
32:14We're almost there.
32:15OK. The final item is a bit of blacksmith salvage in the form of this bench.
32:20It's a really nice piece.
32:22It's industrial, but it would also fit into other interiors as well.
32:25OK. In terms of money, how do you think it will do?
32:28Well, again, a difficult thing to value. It's quite bespoke.
32:31There's not many others around, so we've put £30 to £50 on it.
32:34OK. Well, this was the Blues big spend. £75 spent on it.
32:38OK. I think we still have a chance, though.
32:40Right. OK. You're feeling hopeful?
32:41Yes. OK. Well, time to head to the rostrum, and best of luck.
32:44Thank you very much.
32:46At 90, and I sell at 90 online at 90. Is there five? £90.
32:53Reds, how are you feeling? You're at the auction.
32:55Really excited. Looking forward to it.
32:57I'm a bit scared, a bit nervous.
32:59Oh, do you know what? Say no more, because your first item is coming up.
33:02It's your late Victorian silver bonbon dish.
33:05Very sweet, very petite. £35 spent. Best of luck.
33:10What's that worth? £20? 20 for it?
33:1420 is bid online. At 20. At 20. At 20.
33:17It's the internet. Oh, come on.
33:1928. 28. 28. 30.
33:21£30 bid. Ooh, come on.
33:23Two in the room. Two in the room.
33:25I will sell. For £30.
33:27Right, OK. So you bought that for £35.
33:31So for £30, so you're at a small minus £5 loss.
33:34But you've got your big spend coming up.
33:37Your pair of decorative crown sculptures.
33:40Now, you spent £85 on them.
33:42£42.50 each. Let's see how they do.
33:45Two commission bids putting me in at £35, £40.
33:52I have 40, 2, 5, 8, 50, 55 in the room.
33:56Commission's gone. 60, 65, 70, 75, 80.
34:03Oh, come on, yes, yes, yes, yes.
34:06Yes, yes, yes.
34:08£95 is bid. It's in the room against you online.
34:11They're unusual. 100.
34:13110. Oh, well done.
34:16Are you done online? I'm selling to the room bidder.
34:19For 110.
34:20Well done. We like that.
34:23Yeah. So that was £85 you spent on it.
34:25It's sold for a whopping £110.
34:27That's a nice £25 profit, taking your minus 5 to your plus 20.
34:32Woo!
34:33Now, your last item is your challenge.
34:35Something containing red. It's your Persian enamel items.
34:38Three for £20.
34:40They're decorative, aren't they? What are they worth? £20?
34:4320 for them. Any interest on a line at 20?
34:4610?
34:47£10?
34:4820 bid online.
34:49Three of them for £10? Come on.
34:51At 20 only, then.
34:53It's a maiden bid, then. In and out. Sell for 20.
34:57Evens.
34:58Well, folks, you're keeping my numbers nice and easy.
35:01You bought it for 20. It's sold for 20.
35:03So your plus 20 remains plus 20.
35:08But it's a profit, isn't it?
35:09Yeah.
35:10But it's not finished yet.
35:11Of course, you left Richard £160 for his bonus buy.
35:16Do you remember?
35:17Yes.
35:17Right. So close your eyes.
35:19Nice and tight, Richard.
35:21Off you go.
35:21Get your bonus buy. Thank you.
35:25Richard, over to you.
35:26Open your eyes.
35:29And let me show you what I thought was a pottery vase from 20 Paces.
35:35It is, in fact, an art glass vase, but it's very, very stylish.
35:40It's got that Swedish look about it, which I obviously liked.
35:44But looking at the look on your face, you're thinking, what has Richard bought?
35:48But it's marrow-shaped.
35:49I thought it was a vegetable, yeah.
35:51So how much did you pay for it, Richard?
35:54I paid £16 for it.
35:57Ooh.
35:57Ooh.
35:58And how much do you think it'll make?
35:59Well, to remain consistent, I hope it makes at least £20.
36:03I think we go for it.
36:04OK.
36:05Yeah, we go for it.
36:06We're back, Richard.
36:07Yeah, fabulous.
36:08Definitely going for it?
36:09Yeah.
36:09OK.
36:10The Reds are definitely going with Richard's bonus buy.
36:13But what does the auctioneer make of his marrow vase?
36:17I quite like it, actually.
36:18It's got a very good contemporary look about it.
36:20Now, what kind of estimate would you put on this?
36:22Well, based on it, there'd be a no maker's mark, only £10 to £20.
36:26Richard spent £16, so that slides into the middle of your estimate.
36:30So, fingers crossed for a profit.
36:32I think we have a chance.
36:34The good news is, the auctioneer likes it.
36:36He also thought it was pottery until he realised it was glass.
36:40£10 to £20 estimate put on it.
36:43It's coming up right now.
36:45Best of luck.
36:46Now, we move on to the unusual continental marrow-shaped glass vase.
36:50Good decorator's piece.
36:51What's that worth? £30?
36:5330 for it.
36:53That would be nice.
36:5420 to go.
36:56£10?
36:57£10?
36:59£10 is bid.

37:27So your plus 20 goes to plus 26.
37:30And well done.
