00:18something that you ask when you ask it I didn't want to say anything yeah but you know I just
00:22hope you'd perhaps take some kind of sort of heed from what's going on there oh I thought they were
00:28being trained I didn't realize it was us actually someone's got your hat fuzz get out of it you come
00:34on bean doesn't do that we're back oh I'm loving this scouring Britain sheds for classic cars a
00:44thing of beauty proper special quintessential Brits that's nice a Lee Francis American icons look at
00:52the amount of chrome on the front there and continental curios that is a Lancia Aprilia we're
00:59gonna buy them thank you so much Ludo sort them it's the sunroof no please I'm getting out now drive them
01:07and sell them for a tidy profit oh we're in the money this is shed and buried classic cars we're on our
01:21way to Bristol and we're going open mic what do you call a bloke with leaves on his head Russell
01:29and that's who we're gonna go and see all right okay got you all right yeah now what's uh what's
01:36Russell's poison I'm not quite sure what's poison is on the phone he didn't seem to have been poisoned
01:41yeah yeah I think he's got an eclectic mix I think that's what we normally call it yeah a bit of old and
01:48new four wheels and two he's got four wheels yeah I think he might have the odd two wheel yeah yeah cool
01:55and he probably might have something in between like a three wheel you never know that's true yeah
02:00they do exist it doesn't really matter whether it's British American Italian Scandinavian yeah
02:06whatever yeah as long as it's got some character about it that's what matters isn't it yeah well
02:13you get that kind of moment of excitement that's what really rose our boat is what's in here that
02:19we've never seen before yeah and if it's affordable let's buy it exactly whether we leave Russell
02:25with a Nissan Leaf or a Model T Ford with Leaf Springs who knows but Russell here we come
02:37tell me mate right there's a there's a minor there there's something over there yeah tell me I mean
02:42what what's your poison British cars any cars I mean tell me British cars British cars so Russell
02:48tell me about you mate so restoring stuff I'm a welder and then you collect the odd motor at the same
02:52time yeah yeah we'll have a mosey about a little rummage in there is everything for sale everything's
02:57for sale yeah everything's very cool yeah even you yeah I've seen the size of your wallet yeah yeah so
03:02you know there won't be much yeah exactly I'll be buying the odd spanner yeah great hey Ross fantastic
03:09mate well we'll have a quick go out here yeah and then we'll be in there yeah thanks mate
03:14next to the ubiquitous Morris minor he's got a rather rare a British saloon that I think is a
03:31standard 12 or 14 what what Austin no standard standard was a Midlands-based manufacturer who
03:40built cars and tractors before the brand name disappeared when they merged with triumph the
03:46standard 14 was a popular car of the early 50s though this one has seen better days you would lose
03:53your shirt on that wouldn't you you would have to restore it out of love not money you know where
03:58it's probably more likely to be destined for where banger racers oh no really how do you fancy yeah
04:04going inside well you better throw the dog's ball go all right you go and get it where is it down
04:11Shep come on you've got to be of a certain age to remember that inside Russell is going for the
04:18Tardis of the Year award with a collision of commercial curios that is a van body on something else maybe
04:27American iron the interior is a little bit um care warm would you like to take a look sir
04:35stationary engines we got ourselves a little Lister D stationary engine yeah that's lovely on the trolley
04:42so that's that's great even better it's ready to sit in front of those country shows yes assorted
04:49bric-a-brac hold on Q9 line I tell you what mate yeah that would be an open shut case and another
05:00classic Brit now that looks really rather nice yeah doesn't it now come on then tell me Austin what
05:08it's a 10 hen released in 1932 the Austin 10 is a classic mid-range saloon aimed squarely at the
05:18middle-class market so this was like I suppose probably your sort of bankish manager or at
05:26least well-to-do merchants I was going to say going around in market yeah possibly yeah grosser yeah
05:33yeah yeah yeah so a grosser maybe with two shops the interior looks pretty okay or actually the seat
05:38cushions have been reupholstered by it's because there's been an awful lot of grosser's bottoms on
05:43there well that's right oh my what's that now that is extraordinary now what is this then fuzzy
05:50it's not it's one of those yeah it's a standard 14 but hang on a sec but wait a minute what but
05:57it's done as America Russell look what don't just talk to me well what's this about standard 14 made to
06:06look military so it wasn't originally it wasn't military no but the one outside you were looking
06:12at was former RAF okay and better condition so sort of took that theme across I see oh right okay I'll
06:19get it I actually think it looks pretty cool it does look cool it looks like a kind of staff car
06:25do you know what I mean yeah and it's got well you know it's it's aged but it has got a complete
06:32interior by the looks of things yeah okay does it run at all it does start it's not the best it needs
06:38you know your expertise don't look at me mate it needs his expertise oh let's just have a little look
06:44under there what's under there this is a flathead this is this is a side valve engine so so you're nice
06:51and slowly then yeah very slowly but it'll it'll get there when it is going it ain't slow oh okay
06:58it isn't slow so once you wind it up yeah yeah it does look lovely though I like it it's got a
07:07certain chance funky I mean it's I mean where are you going to find another one outside yeah that's
07:13a good point well delivered yeah now look there's something behind here that I want to have a look at
07:17going right okay now what the heck is that that is a 1954 Nash roller tractor that's it that's a
07:26tipper does it is it a powered tipper no you just a manual tipper oh okay yeah motorcycle seat BSA
07:32stationary engine and a free speeds forward and reverse it's actually got a roller on it as well
07:37it's for rolling the garden oh look at that I've driven up the road oh yeah yeah yeah it does 25 miles
07:43now 25 miles per hour it really battles along I tell you it's becoming more and more attractive
07:48by the stopping it again is a yeah that is an issue yeah that's going on what's that that's a
07:56little Chinese trials bike oh cool sweet little thing and one two five semi-automatic super cool
08:04that could be really good fun yeah thing yeah well look this is a good fun corner here all right
08:09shall we go have a look over there then Russell's second unit has got a lovely triumph saloon and uh-oh
08:17oh no no no look it's a Dennis you like these don't you look at that look it's got it's got the starting
08:27handle and everything come back now that is lovely okay I've got a hankering for I've got a hankering
08:33for a Dennis you know I have to say that is exactly the same as the one that I got nailed
08:39is it really 300 quid yeah from Dennis mower like that and I sold it for 70. did you yeah okay so look
08:50right we've got that um standard 14 oh yeah military military spec one yeah we've got the one
08:57next door to it which is an Austin Austin Austin 10 10 yeah I really like that one yeah but you know
09:03I just do like Austin's there's that motorbike oh yes of course yeah okay and there's also the tipper
09:09the little tipper now that that is that's a lot in quite a compact area come on let's go do a deal
09:17mind the step yeah all right
09:19I don't know where to start rush where should we start loads of stuff you know in a very small
09:29space as well that's great compact yeah compact but lovely yeah okay mate so go on then what right
09:35I'm going to start off by asking about the Austin 10 there okay so is it for so yes yeah how much
09:43are you looking for for that five and a half five and a half okay all right well I'll chip in then
09:48okay yeah what my very rare tractor how much is that grand yeah okay next to it is a the trials bike
09:58the trials bike how much is that 650 okay cokey now standing in front of us is this standard 14
10:07three two three two does this run and ride it starts it wants tinkering with does it stop I drove it in
10:17here oh right okay from from where just outside yeah did you use the brakes to stop it yes I did
10:23yeah okay and they did stop yeah yeah yeah okay okay that's good all right good now I'm just wondering
10:29what to perhaps pair and wheel and deal with do you know what I mean what do you think I think it's
10:34gotta be what the little tractor truck tipper truck yeah not for a grand no nothing else you want to
10:41chucking with it okay let me have a think three two so that would be four two and with the motorbike four eight
10:51four two the lot four four um four three
11:11now that is extraordinary we're down in Bristol with Russell and it's jam-packed shed full of curiosities
11:19we've offered 4200 for a standard car a tipper and a scrambler bike but he wants more
11:27four four four um four three
11:33no four four
11:39bargain
11:42go on then Russ okay cheers 4400 of your finest British pounds we'll be winking your way great
11:51hey mate what a great day
11:53next day back at the shed we reveal all
11:58we have ourselves man okay it's a standard right motor but apart from that it's been turned into a
12:09military staff car kind of American tip doesn't it with knobbly rear tires
12:14yeah well we thought we might off-road it
12:17yeah I think it looks great and apparently it's got a good turn of speed it'll do 65 70 miles per hour
12:23well it really
12:24it's proper fast isn't it
12:25yeah it is in something that old
12:27you can't care you'll have to concentrate on the steering
12:29yeah very much so
12:30look right I think we should just accessorize that I'm not quite sure quite how
12:34but I've got a feeling there could be a couple of American stars on the doors
12:37do you know what I mean right yeah I don't know
12:39it does apparently have a running problem as well might be a little bit of a carburettor clean coming up
12:44and potentially it might have a little bit of a weep in the cylinder head
12:49but that's an easy job isn't it
12:51can we just clear this up a slight running here does it run
12:54yes
12:55oh okay
12:56don't know
12:56yes it runs
12:58never tried it
12:59it runs but
13:00it bubbles
13:01it might do
13:02I think it's rather a lovely thing that we're going to get going
13:05we're going to accessorize and then we could
13:08we've invaded Oxfordshire a few times
13:10perhaps we should go to Wiltshire this time and surprise them
13:13yeah
13:14yeah
13:15yeah
13:16deliver a general to Wiltshire
13:18Tidworth
13:19oh we could deliver a general
13:20staff car
13:21as for the scrambler and the roller tipper
13:26if we have time we'll give them a bit of a fettle that the main job is the standard 14
13:32team
13:33with its US military paint job
13:35there we go
13:38four cylinders of standard fineness there
13:41shall I get in and have a look
13:43I mean Bean's in there but I'm sure she'll move
13:45what are we going to do just crank it and see what happens
13:47see what happens
13:48see what you obviously have to pull first
13:49okay I'm going to get in this side
13:50watch out Bean
13:51yes
13:53ha ha
13:54ha
13:55ha
13:56it's running but it's not happening
14:01so our nice little runner is not quite sprinting
14:05number four cylinder isn't firing
14:08number three the leads can disconnect it from the cap
14:11so that's an easy fix
14:13right okay so three is an easy fix
14:15four less so
14:16do you think we should take it for a spin and see if four chimes in
14:19I think we should change the spark plug on number four first
14:21yeah
14:22I agree with you Al
14:24overruled
14:25typical
14:27Fuzz removes the spark plug and it looks like we were right to wait
14:32there we are
14:33it's all wet
14:34okay
14:36our first remedy is to burn off the old fuel and crud
14:42but when Fuzz tries again
14:46what's happening
14:48the end cylinder when I take the cap off quite a way
14:50yeah
14:51it fires on that cylinder
14:52right okay
14:53I think we should change that plug
14:54that's better
14:55that's exactly the right one
14:56is it
14:57well I hope it's alright because I bought that at a jumble
15:00ready
15:01ready
15:02third time lucky
15:03yeah
15:04that's it
15:06that's better isn't it
15:07sounds good
15:08no
15:09that's much better
15:10it's not bouncing around like it was
15:12that sounds fantastic
15:13yeah I think we might have a little bit of a carburettor problem
15:16yeah maybe
15:17there's an air screw here we can maybe
15:18can I just make a suggestion
15:19yes
15:20why don't we just pile in and take it down and drive them back
15:22good idea
15:23see if it works
15:24go on
15:25is it not worth fiddling with the air screw before we go quickly
15:27very quickly
15:28I can get a screwdriver
15:29alright mate
15:30overruled again
15:33Alan's 30 second adjustment turns into 30 minutes as he discovers a new problem
15:40a worn gasket
15:41it's leaking here Fuzz when you turn it off it squirted fuel out of this joint here
15:45alright okay
15:46the solution is for Fuzz to make a new one
15:49I'm using the hammer in the ring end of this spanner just to cut the hole in this homemade gasket
16:02after Alan has filed down the flange connecting the carb to the air intake to make sure that it's flat
16:08they re-plumb the carb and try again
16:11okay ignition on
16:13go on Alan
16:15pulling the starter now
16:19bit of choke
16:25it runs
16:26but it sounds even worse
16:28we could do with setting the idle
16:33it bogs down a little bit doesn't it
16:38hold on Al I've got an idea
16:40I've got an idea as well
16:41what's that
16:42why don't we just take it for a drive
16:43let's take it for a drive
16:44just see what happens
16:45yeah
16:46because it may suddenly free up a bit
16:48unusually
16:49we've got a lovely tick over
16:50yeah
16:51that's a beautiful tick over
16:52see if it drives
16:53let's go have a drive
16:54are you going to drive?
16:55I don't mind
16:56well I'm closest
16:57I can drive
16:58I'll go in the back
16:59alright
17:00come on then Beaneth
17:01oh hang on there's a cylinder head on my seat
17:02oh dear
17:04so finally we're in the car
17:06but getting it going
17:07doesn't quite kill the problem
17:09something's trying to chime in
17:11I still think we should take all the spark plugs out first
17:15yeah I think we should take all the spark plugs out
17:17get a new set
17:18also look at the points
17:24do you know what
17:25I know there's some fettling to be done
17:27quite substantially
17:28yeah
17:29oh you pulled your knob off
17:30pull the knob off
17:31ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
17:32pull the knob off
17:34oh I'm just trying to get it in the reverse there
17:36first second third
17:37reverse madam
17:38yeah
17:39that's it
17:40that's it
17:41there you go
17:42if you pull on the uh
17:43pull on the crook
17:44rather than the uh
17:45rather than the knob
17:46it'll uh
17:47it'll uh
17:48it'll avoid that
17:49yeah yeah
17:50once this is sorted
17:52is sorted. I'm planning a military-themed outing, but we've got our work cut out. There's a
17:58lot to do, isn't there, to make it run beautiful, but for the first little test run, I think
18:04that's the right result.
18:12Back at the shed, Alan and Skid move on to the scrambler. I'm quite looking forward to
18:17this, Al. Yeah, me too. It looks virtually new, doesn't it? Just dusty. Yeah, I mean,
18:22it is a Far Eastern, kind of knock-off, cheap motorbike, but I'll tell you what, when it
18:27runs, it's probably great fun. So, should we just do the usual, just see if it runs? I
18:32mean, it's fairly new. I think it's going to be pilot jet blocked. It's always the pilot
18:36jet. Yeah, well, especially with modern fuel. Got a good ignition system on these, you'll
18:40always have a good spark. Let's see if it's got some fuel in it. Yeah. See if it starts.
18:44Yeah, and then see what happens from there. Alan checks the fuel and then gives it a first
18:50kick. It's got good compression. Yeah, it's working. The engine sounds good. Yeah, it's
19:00not rightly, is it? No smoke. These things don't get used, Mark.
19:06That's trying, isn't it? Yeah. Let's just warm it up. Warm it up. No, it's definitely got
19:23some block jets. So, like the standard, the Scrambler has carb trouble, while Skid does
19:29some cleaning. Alan dismounts the carb and gives it some tough love. Well, that's nice
19:37and clean in there. That's a good sign. So, there's the pilot jet. There's the main jet
19:40and that's the idle adjusting screw. So, we'll take the jets out and see if they're clear.
19:46Yeah, the pilot jet's completely blocked. Can't see any light through it at all. So, I've got
19:50a wire brush bristle. Hopefully, I can make that go through the jet. It's very reluctant
19:55to go in. The problem these days is the fuel. It's the ethanol in the fuel that attacks
20:01the jets. It causes the fuel to block up and make a big mess. You can just see it in the
20:05float jam. It's started to happen here. It's got that green tinned on here. It's just started
20:10to take effect. But because this hole is so small, it blocks up very quickly and it stops
20:15the engine from running. So, I managed to find a really small wire brush with very fine bristles.
20:18And that now goes through and goes through nicely. Alan refits the carb and goes again.
20:28Carb's done. Carb's cleaned out. Tank drains, fresh fuel. Let's give it a go. Choke on.
20:33Let it warm up a little bit. Let it warm up a bit. Yeah, yeah. That's much better, isn't
20:47it? Finally, he gives the gears a quick check. That's perfect. That runs really well. It's
20:54good. I think we've got to take it out now. I'm going to get a crash on it. All right,
20:58then. And away he goes.
21:06It might be a cheap as chips Chinese import that will soon be thrashed and crashed by someone
21:12with more spots than since. But if it allows Alan to rediscover his inner teenager, I'm all
21:18for it. So, a great end to the day. But the Scrambler's just one of our three purchases.
21:28Tomorrow we've got to take on the tipper. But the big task is to get the standard ready
21:33for its military-themed day. Will it cut the mustard? Or will it sink into the Oxfordshire
21:39mud?
21:41Cut the...
21:43The knob's come off. Where's the knob?
21:55We had an interesting day yesterday with our standard. We got it running. But it's not very
22:01happy. Today, we're going to have another try. But first, our other purchase. The three-wheel
22:08dumper truck with a BSA engine. I'll tell you what we should try and do. Is if we get it
22:13going, I bet you we can get three of us on it. Oh, easily, yeah. Oh, easily. Don't you
22:17think? Or perhaps even the odd dog. Yeah. We'll all go on. We just take it down the road
22:21and back. Yeah. I think we should put some fuel in it and just see if it goes. Okay, let's
22:24do that. I'll put a little totty down. We're not bothering with the spark plug scenario or
22:28anything like that. We're just going to see if we get lucky. Go and CB. Just got this feeling
22:31it's just going to work. Fighting torque. Hiya. So let's see. Four-stroke, isn't it? Yes,
22:37it's a four-stroke. Okay, choke on. Bit of throttle. Bit of throttle. Bit of crankage. Go on then,
22:44cranker.
22:45It's dead as a door now. First attempt. Not so good. So Alan checks for a spark.
22:56A massive spark, isn't it? Right, before you put that back in, let's go cheap. All right,
23:01yeah, get some start-me-up. Rattle two. Oh, that was a fire. Yeah, yeah. It's definitely
23:16something. It does fire. What we need to do is go down to the workshop and just file this
23:25square. See, that's at an angle. Oh, right. Okay. Should be dead square like that. All right,
23:29do you want to try it with the, um... Which way is it turning? If you try it with the rope,
23:32I'm going to file that. Our tipper roller BSA oddity has dual start. First attempt. If that
23:41kicks back, it's going to suck him down like a big sucker. Close. Was it? Second time with feeling
23:49and a slug of easy start. Ready? Yeah.
24:00Forrest Gump! Like all those BSA motorbikes, it needs a pin of patience, but in the end,
24:06it gets there. Right, forricks. Yeah, hop on. Here we go. No, no. Ready? Hey,ervine,
24:15worry. Geez, that's slimy!
24:18I have no idea how any of these controls work on this man we didn't get that far
24:28mainly because I put it into third and I didn't have enough revs I don't think
24:33I think we need to adjust the air screw do you think I think it's just I think it is pilot error
24:37it's going remarkably well getting it going again it's not so easy but eventually we're away
24:56we're in third in 1950 our Nash super tipper tractor retailed at 186 quid and was advertised
25:10as suitable for both the farm and the garden 75 years later it's still running but only just
25:17shall we disembark yeah certainly felt really powerful yeah great fun though
25:22thank god we brought the starter cord ready yeah
25:27or maybe not
25:36you've heard of a bull in a china shop but what about a tractor
25:47can he stop it that's the main thing
25:51can I just say if I'm correct I was terrified because of the cutout switch I don't think works
26:02and I thought this will blunder its way through anything yeah well yeah you've got to actually
26:06stall it on the throttle that that electronical stop I don't think work you could have shoved
26:11choked down Al I was panicking I wanted to stop there once we realised you're safe it was really funny yeah it's quite heavy steering isn't
26:21it H I know the steering is heavy yeah you won't get many over 60s driving this no you won't I'm knackered
26:28so absolutely trashed I'm gonna have to
26:32sit down come on let's go and sit down on the bench
26:34oh dear look boys I think look we've got it going it runs right we just you know at some point give it a wash before sale but
26:45basically man that is something that someone is going to love who's into those kind of industrial kind of things you know
26:51they've just got tinker with a carburettor yeah okay well we can tinker with that and we can clean it but
26:56basically lads we have a three-wheel tipper slash dumper yeah slash roller yeah which is a runner
27:04and it certainly makes you laugh and it makes you laugh yes exactly it's fun yeah nearly kills us
27:09so with the tipper sorted next day we're back on the standard Alan thinks we've got an ignition problem
27:21so he starts with the distributor so what we're going to do is take the distributor off
27:25you have to dance so I can make that work right okay basically it's loose off these two bolts and
27:29this should just lift out the engine out it comes and immediately Alan notices something
27:34okay come look at this this may or may not be a contributory issue to our problem yeah look at
27:39that oh it's touching the distributor case that's going to short it out is that the live feed that's
27:44the live feed and this is actually loose look you can move it finger see that slide it along oh yeah
27:48what do you need to do bend that down yeah we'll do that take it off bend that down make it
27:52yeah yeah it may have been a definitely a contributory cause if not well with vibration
27:56it might be just occasionally archy let's get this top plate off and we can see what we've got to work
28:00with yeah yeah modern cars have computer controlled ignition but engines from this era were run by
28:07electro mechanical distributors like this they were full of small moving parts that were easily
28:12disturbed that hair there's a blonde hair there I'm not sure where that came from but I can tell you
28:17what that's definitely not Henry's Henry would not have been delving in here and also that's not
28:20highlighted very good point yeah so let's throw it away those
28:24five minutes later it's reassembled do you think you saw the problem uh I think it will I think all
28:32these things add up you know a little bit here a little bit there hopefully Al I mean you never
28:37know back in it goes and we try again okay here we go hang on come on in hey bloody hell hey by the
28:46way the veterinary says that she's a little overweight yes about how many biscuits probably a couple of
28:53bags right okay here we go
28:57it's advanced isn't it
29:05you've broken it skid you've broken it Al
29:16all right oh hey what was that so there you go even our resident genius doesn't always get it
29:23right what we should have done is took a picture of the setup before we took it apart
29:27we were certainly too excited to get on with the repair that we didn't take a picture
29:31the only solution is to dig out the hand crank and realign the pistons
29:36there you go you're on gonna get piston number one top dead top dead center on compression stroke
29:41right and I can see where the rotor arm is pointing to and align the distributor cap in the correct
29:44place because I would suggest we're a little bit out turn it over now till you hear a hiss
29:49from my finger I thought keep going one keep going two turns later all right stop there stop there
29:56Alan seems confident but the engine won't play ball it's on two cylinders okay the back two
30:06cylinders are firing four aren't running pulled the caps off made no difference to the engine at all
30:10okay well but at least we got two running the same engine was later used in the mark four jag so
30:16it was well thought of but there's a lot more cleaning and adjusting before it's running on all four
30:22cylinders and ticking over properly that is love and see if it starts just on its own with no swath or
30:28anything here comes the acid test oh look at that that is lovely sounds amazing doesn't it yeah
30:38Alan guy you you are a pair of geniuses I've just been an assistant yeah proper team effort this
30:45morning mate it's absolutely fantastic and obviously it just things really came together when I arrived
30:50yeah once the blonde highlights out the distributor it seems to be fine I think that's what was jamming it
30:55I think it's a long it's a long way from a cast like you said one quiet tea come on
31:00suitably refreshed me and skid move on to the final stage of the resto enhancing the military theme
31:10with some extra US Army stars
31:13it's all in the prep innit
31:17but I think these couple of US Army stars will just uh you know just finish it off
31:27right there we go yeah skid carefully marks up the position for the stencil but there's a problem
31:36I can't find any low tack contact adhesive so I thought spray mount is what we were looking for so
31:42we're using what every child has yeah great um we're gonna use get wiping just do the bit is the
31:49bits that are gonna be a nightmare are the corners and the lines of the stars you need it stuck down
31:55because otherwise the paint gets under it gonna bleed in it I don't know this is gonna work I think it
32:01well I don't think there's going to be a problem I think it's going to go rather well what could
32:06possibly go wrong not a lot the five-pointed star has been used by the US Army since 1942 when it was
32:14introduced to identify their gear I mean if this was in World War two yeah yeah I would be doing this
32:21under fire I'm sure of it no they did this before the D-Day landings oh do they yes so that the planes
32:27could see who was theirs all right when they got in the forests and things all right aerosol paint
32:32didn't become widely available until the mid-1950s but for something like this it's a godsend not the
32:40skid always approves right leave that now let's do the other side just leave it you're gonna make it
32:47run under not making it worse leave it alone just leave it please you'll come back in a minute I know
32:58you're looking at me that needs more just leave it a minute all right patience we repeat the process
33:06on the other side by which time the first side is dry and ready for a big reveal that's not gone well
33:17that is absolutely terrible we should have got spray mount you couldn't have done it worse even if you
33:29half close your eyes it's rubbish so Alan's not the only genius who occasionally makes a bad move can I draw
33:37your attention away from the square I don't think we've ever got something so wrong no that is proper
33:47wrong what are we gonna do let it dry and try and take up those bits out we might take up them out I
33:54might have a go because it's thicker on the letters it's not good it doesn't bode well I warned you
34:01tomorrow we're gonna take the standard on a multi-surface military road trip to see how it runs with a bit of
34:12luck it'll get dirty enough to hide the stars but after all our engine problems will our standard go
34:19the distance three weeks ago in a shed near Bristol now that is extraordinary it's a standard 14 we found
34:39a 1950s British saloon car the US military trim we tested it repaired it it bogs down a little bit
34:48doesn't it and enhanced it in a manner of speaking that is absolutely terrible now after a little bit
34:57of tidying up of our efforts it's ready for a proper test drive come road trip have I got a lovely day for
35:05us lined up all right okay so now look I'll take you through it bit by bit we have before us a faux
35:11military vehicle now it also has off-road tires at the back that's good for gripping the motor yeah so
35:19the big question in my mind is is there any point in them only if you go off-road yeah exactly then once
35:28we've had our fill of that I thought we might take it on a little road adventure just to try it out where
35:34where I hear you ask where what we're going to do is we are going to one of my favorite museums oh yeah
35:43which is obviously a military museum yes that involves our helicopters and airplanes of course it will do
35:49yeah it might do yeah yeah yeah yeah anyway we're going to middle wallop okay ah we're going to go to the
35:55army air museum all right very cool okay but on the way I thought we might just have a little stop off
36:02for scorch okay yeah excellent well let's hope it makes it for us if not I'm blaming you two it's going
36:08to be fine I've got a feeling that this is going to be one of those great trouble-free journeys
36:14so off we go it's a shame that Guy's not here to enjoy the fun but we are going to I can't believe
36:23Guy's ill oh no I'm a bit worried about him he's never sick he's never ill our off-road test track is
36:31my mate Nigel's farm are those knobbly rear tires for show or for go only one way to find out foot down
36:39and into second
36:47where's the knob you've lost your knob the knob's come off I'll just go just go nobless if you're
36:51all right yeah well look oh a little roll about somewhere okay we'll find the knob in a minute here we go
37:01I think it's really fast do you know what feels really fast it's pretty quick in it in the 1950s
37:11standards were occasionally used for rallying and judging from the way this one handles it should
37:17happen more often pull it around there sir come on here we go here we are
37:21right Tiff you can stay on the strip down the middle back spring seats are working really well
37:31really good yeah really good the back I'll try and stay on the strip watch it bouncing
37:35no I think this is uh I think this has potential it has to be a classic rally car yeah or a bit of a
37:48trailer anyway maybe uh slap some bigger springs on so it's a bit taller you think you're a forward
37:53escort wouldn't you yeah this is such fun this is great I love it so far it's passing the test with
38:05flying colors it's not even overheating let's go I see a full throttle launch I have to admit I had
38:18no idea the standard would drive so well but who's complaining back on the blacktop before we head for
38:27the museum in middle wallop time for a tea break I'm not worried about this gate of middle wallop at all
38:33no yeah we've even got a working fuel gauge yeah we're working everything gauge but we can tell
38:39this working fuel gauge because it's just above zero yeah don't start all right just because I look
38:48we've got to sell it after we've been that's true you don't want to sell it with the surface of fuel
38:52exactly here we go look oh I'm parched yeah come on quick cup of tea then we'll get on yeah
38:59now look right I think we need a bit of clankage only because this car has excelled
39:10yeah it's brilliant it really is amazingly performance do you know it is really shocking
39:16no rattles no bangs no squeaks nothing and I tell you what there's no spluttering on the throttle no
39:21no we were doing at least 35 miles an hour I have no doubt that it's going to be an accomplished car
39:29on the open road I think so right drink up times money I feel like some cake at the army museum oh
39:35that would be good it's another 40 miles to middle wallop so a good test for our car never been in
39:45fourth gear off-road because I was hammering it in third oh and that's traveling along nice look at that
39:51from the late 30s onwards standard began to call these flying 14s because of their aerodynamic
39:59styling so the army flying museum seems like a good endpoint for our road trip come on then mate
40:06we'll just have a quick little rom-ah we need an education seeing as the standards got us here
40:10as curator Susan explains the museum tells the story of the army flying corps and the various aircraft
40:19they've used during World War two army gliders played a vital role in the D-Day landings can you
40:27imagine right now I go all right Al first what we're going to do is we're going to get into this
40:31glider right you're going to be towed across the channel right and then we're going to release the
40:36wire and you're going to crash into a field there are helicopters of all sizes and shapes and some
40:44realities like this Jeep fitted with chopper blades sorry so hang on a second so they were looking
40:51about how to get behind enemy lines in World War two yeah some really clever soul thought a Willis
40:57Jeep might actually be able to be controlled using a rotor blade yeah I mean it's sort of like an almost
41:04an auto gyro system okay all right yeah so they were dropped out were they floats down and then floated down
41:10good like a sycamore seat oh right I see can you imagine with the Willis Jeep look we're just going
41:14to float you down on the rotors like an auto rotate I'd just say please don't just go look I'll drive
41:21there it's fine whether anyone ever tried attaching chopper blades to a standard 14 like ours who knows
41:28but either way it flies have you enjoyed a little brief whiz round it's been worth the drive that's right
41:36I mean we'd like to present you with our very own exhibit for you to keep at the museum for the
41:43for the rest of time no she won't want it oh me oh right I thought I thought you meant the
41:49standard car no no she wouldn't want that yeah that would be great oh well I'm here I'm available
41:53yeah I could just sort of live in the Huey as well I just need a kettle yeah that's it really just pop
42:00out and tell tales absolutely actually talking about people who like tea we better find out from
42:04chopper Roy where that car's worth anything go on okay all right Susan thank you so very much thank
42:08you very much all right it's an absolute pleasure I'll be back very shortly next day back at base we
42:19find out can I just apologize for our stenciling oh you'll kill you by taking it off-road we've managed
42:27to kind of sort of subdued you know I think it's kind of blended it well patina yeah now I've got to
42:34tell you mate okay this thing absolutely flies it's it it's an acquired taste let's just face the
42:43music oh yeah what do you reckon it's gonna be nice but you only want two people that want it and you're
42:49there aren't you so it's gonna for mid to high three high threes mid mid would be a bit mean
42:54the high threes definitely okay okay hang on look well let's call that four we paid Russell four four
43:04for the car plus the tipper and the scrambler so not a bad price I reckon the dump truck and the bike is a
43:12ground yeah yeah all right so well what have we done made a monkey amway yeah that's right well
43:19yeah 500 yeah that's it approximately I think depending obviously whether we're getting late
43:24threes or early four oh that's true but you're a prospective monkey all right mate so there's
43:29potential 500 in it it's a proper crowd puller yeah it's a crowd puller they would they wouldn't
43:34get rather like you Roy yeah it's lovely to see Roy isn't it nice I do like the t-shirt
