00:00On the evening of February 17th of 2024, in what should have been a standard arrest,
00:12quickly spiraled into the unthinkable taking place.
00:16Let's take a look at the shocking story and find out what actually happened.
00:21One of the toughest jobs in the world is a truck driver that does over the road halls.
00:27Not only is it physically demanding, but also can take a toll on someone's mental health
00:31as well.
00:33Often commercial drivers are spending the bulk of their days and nights far away from their
00:38family and friends.
00:41Society benefits greatly from the sacrifices they make as they are routinely transporting
00:45much-needed goods around the country.
00:48However, in some cases, truckers could be transporting more than just goods in their trailers.
00:55To stop this sort of illegal activity in its tracks.
00:59The US Border Patrol has checkpoints on major roads, where they inspect and arrest individuals
01:04that may be smuggling weapons, drugs, or even humans in their vehicles.
01:10On Interstate 35, approximately 25 miles north of Laredo, Texas, a Border Patrol canine would
01:18smell something fishy going on in a red-semi truck at the checkpoint.
01:23The dog would give the patrol agents probable cause to dig deeper into what was going on.
01:29After some brief questioning, the agent proceeded to enter the cab.
01:33The officer would discover seven undocumented individuals hiding inside.
01:37killed one.
01:39Heστ nastΔ™p.
01:40situation zones.
01:41In Terravia.
01:41habit.
01:42Hi guys.
01:43Hey, pick the cigarette out.
01:46Take the cigarette.
01:47Where is the cigarette?
01:48Come on.
01:49IGA's shirt.
01:50Yeah, shirt.
01:52Can you take photos?
01:54The story surrounding this arrest only gets stranger from here.
02:19The penalties if someone is found guilty of alien smuggling can be quite severe to say
02:23the least.
02:25The state of Texas has one of the harsher sentences for the federal offence, with a minimum of
02:2910 years in prison.
02:32The man and the undocumented group of seven would be transported to the Border Patrol Detention
02:37Center following the discovery.
02:39Do you have anything else in the tractor?
02:43No other personal property in there?
02:46Electronics, important religious items, pictures of kids, family members.
02:49You all got a lot of mail.
02:51A lot of mail.
02:54Mail.
02:55Mail.
02:56Okay.
02:57All right.
02:58Take off the sweater.
03:00You're right back right now.
03:02I'm just going to go through it.
03:04All right.
03:05Does that sweatpants have a band on it?
03:07Take it off.
03:08Do you want that one?
03:10If it doesn't come out, we'll cut it out.
03:15Unfortunately, it's just part of the process.
03:17We have people that try to hurt themselves.
03:19You need to take out the band on that.
03:21It won't come out.
03:22All right.
03:23We're going to have to cut it out.
03:24Just pull one to one side for me, please.
03:25Hey, back here!
03:26.
03:27Can you, sir?
03:28Yeah.
03:29All right.
03:30I'll take that one for you.
03:31All right.
03:32You can take out the assembles.
03:33And then take out the socks.
03:35Okay, and then the other foot as well.
03:39Put it back on?
03:40Yeah, you can put it back on.
03:44So what do you have the ankle monitor on you?
03:46Huh?
03:47What do you have the ankle monitor on you?
03:48Uh, it ain't health to rest, but me and my mare got it to it, and I'm supposed to go
03:54around that area.
03:55Okay.
03:56All right.
03:57I'm going to have you stand on the wall real quick, and do a quick pat-down, okay?
04:00.
04:01You have an idea.
04:02I'm not seeing one in here.
04:03Yeah, that's where it's here.
04:04All right.
04:05Come on.
04:06Come on.
04:07Set up your feet.
04:08With the realization of possibly facing prison time for his actions, the truck driver, later
04:14identified as 43-year-old Trennell Davis, would ask to speak with his mother.
04:19Huh?
04:20Uh, not right now.
04:25Um, who do you need to call?
04:27My mom or my mom.
04:28Your mom?
04:29Okay.
04:30Um, we'll see, okay?
04:33It's, you're not obligated to a phone call, so we'll see how, if we have time.
04:38Uh, where's your mom at?
04:40At home, I guess.
04:42In .
04:43Okay.
04:44And you know the number?
04:45Mm-hmm.
04:46We'll see how things go.
04:47Um, and if we have time.
04:48If we have time, uh, I'll let you make a phone call, but it's gonna have to be on speakerphone,
04:52okay?
04:53All right.
04:54.
04:56What's the process?
04:57.
04:58Um, so it's gonna be a little while, that's for sure.
05:01Um, we have to make a phone, a few phone calls, um, to other agencies and stuff like that.
05:06Uh, you'll probably be, you're gonna be in custody at least for the weekend, okay?
05:12Um, we're gonna submit your case to the courthouse.
05:15Either we are or HSI, um, and they're gonna determine whether it's accepted or declined.
05:22What's the name?
05:23Uh, for prosecution, for the, for the charges, for alien smuggling, okay?
05:29Um, um, so, uh, since it's Saturday, the courts aren't open on the weekends and Monday's a holiday,
05:38so technically probably Tuesday.
05:40.
05:42Um, probably not in here, probably at the other, at the main station.
05:45Um, but yeah, most likely.
05:47Um, and then most likely Tuesday morning you'll have a, a hearing in front of the judge.
05:55And, uh, I don't really know here if they, they release you or not.
06:00I'm not too sure.
06:02So, uh, it kinda is still iffy since it's so early in the, in the process.
06:08Okay.
06:09Um, someone's gonna come talk to you in a little bit.
06:12Read you your Miranda rights, all that stuff, okay?
06:14Does that make sense?
06:16Do you have any other questions?
06:18No?
06:19Okay.
06:20Do you have any medical conditions or anything?
06:24No?
06:25Okay.
06:26Okay.
06:27All right.
06:28We'll be with you in a little bit, okay?
06:29No one's gonna be able to, like, you can't really hear through this.
06:31I'll be honest with you.
06:32You're gonna wait.
06:33You're gonna wait.
06:34You're gonna wait?
06:35Yeah.
06:36I thought it was gonna be a little room or something.
06:37I wanna just steal my mind, so.
06:38You wanna what?
06:39Just tell us something.
06:40Okay.
06:41Just tell us something.
06:42Okay.
06:43Well, just remember, it's about nine o'clock here.

06:51Oh, it's the same?
06:52Yeah.
06:53Oh.
06:54Okay.

06:56You can take the phone in the room.

07:32All right.
07:33We'll come back and get you in a little bit, all right?
07:49...
07:51While unwilling to talk publicly in that moment, Davis would have a change of heart later in
07:56the night.
07:57After the call, he was taken back to his holding cell.
08:01When the agents went to check on him later, they would find him unresponsive with his jacket
08:05around the throat area.
08:08The patrol agents immediately called for emergency medical services and attempted CPR
08:13on the unresponsive Davis.
08:15The ambulance would arrive approximately 20 minutes later and take over.
08:20Unfortunately, this would be the last days of Davis, as the revival was not a success.
08:26It's still unclear why he made the drastic decision.
08:30Could it have been the fear of a harsh prison sentence?
08:34Possibly envisioning a bleak future due to the likelihood of having his commercial license
08:39revoked?
08:40Or was it simply a combination of those thoughts in addition to the stress that comes with truck
08:45driving in general?
08:47Let me know what you think about this particular situation and what transpired.
