00:00On the evening of May 18th of 2023, in a small town in southern Arizona,
00:12an unusual police encounter would occur that turned the town upside down.
00:17Let's take a look back at the shocking story and find out what actually happened.
00:24While most of society is settling in for bed when the day turns to night,
00:28law enforcement is wide-awake patrolling areas and dealing with many distress calls
00:34coming in over the radio. On some occasions things can be quite slow, other nights not so much.
00:43On a native reservation near the Arizona southern border, the local tribal police department would
00:48request assistance from the U.S. Customs Border Patrol regarding a shots-fired call that would
00:54come in late in the day.
00:55United States Border Patrol, Tucson Sector, can I help you?
00:58Hi, this is from TLP.
01:00Yes, ma'am.
01:00I have officers to officers headings to the village of managers, and we've got a point
01:07of shots being heard. They don't, well, there's, I guess a threat made on a 101 from somebody
01:17she has a restraining order against. They just, they just know he lives on the west side of
01:22the RIC Center. So they're asking if you have anybody that can go with them to check in the
01:27area of the west side of the RIC Center. They can meet at the RIC Center.
01:31Meet up at the RIC Center, and this is in the village of managers?
01:33Yeah, in managers. Yeah.
01:37Okay.
01:38Okay, and you said the house in question, they have a restraining order against each
01:42other, or somebody has a, okay.
01:43I guess he went and reported that, uh, that the girl, he, the ex-girlfriend was shot, her
01:49and her mom were shot yesterday. So now the girlfriend is saying maybe it's prematurely
01:54that since she keeps hearing shots fired, everybody keeps calling in the village, checking
01:58on her. So that's why they want, and I guess he does live in that area on the west side
02:02of the RIC Center. So she said he does have on a rifle, and they had native contact with
02:07him yesterday, so they're going to try to check on him today, or right now, to see if that
02:12was him, she's not forgotten.
02:14Okay.
02:15Oh, okay. But yeah, they can meet at the RIC Center.
02:17Okay, but, so the actual report is shots being fired, correct?
02:20Yeah, everybody said they report, they heard two, but nobody can pinpoint where it came
02:25from. These are all coming from the west side.
02:27Okay. All right. Sounds good. Thank you.
02:28All right. Thank you.
02:29Bye-bye.
02:30Several Customs Border Patrol agents in the area would rendezvous with the local PD and discuss
02:35the situation and how they should proceed.
02:39What's up, man? Anybody here for some good more ?
02:46No. Are you?
02:49What's his name again?
03:03?
03:04I can ask him real quick.
03:05Oh, yeah. You definitely know who he is.
03:10He's got two different houses. One is going to be right up here. It's going to be a little
03:16guessing game trying to find it. I don't know exactly where the is at.
03:20He's got the same equipment. The west side is there.
03:27He's got a right to the side. Are you on contact with him?
03:35Are you on contact with him?
03:36Okay.
03:37Okay.
03:38So, okay, so.
03:51.
03:52All right.
03:53.
03:54Sounds good.
03:55Two nights in a row, you know, huh? Two nights in a row. Last night was charcoal.
04:09Oh yeah, I heard about that shit.
04:12So here, one here.
04:16Alright, I know this is one of them right here.
04:25Dude, he's got another house too. This one right here. So we are right here.
04:32And this is his house. Right. That house and that house.
04:37This is his house. That's his brother's house.
04:43But there is shots fired, they said? Yeah.
04:45Uh, recording hands-free.
04:47Hands-free? Yeah.
04:48Alright, y'all ready?
04:50Alright, uh...
04:52All I'd say is...
04:54There's a bunch of y'all guys here now too.
05:01Are you guys good?
05:03Yeah.
05:04You can go if you're ready.
05:05Yeah, let's go.
05:06Yeah.
05:07After coming up with a plan, they all drove to the area to further investigate the initial
05:35report.
05:36On high alert, the officers began looking around in the darkness for the supposed armed and
05:42dangerous suspect.
05:43Yeah.
05:44You wanna watch that set?
05:45Yeah.
05:46You wanna watch that set?
05:47Yep.
05:48Nice.
05:49Now we're here to the channel.
05:51Hey, ya boy I have a watch come on the senteil, hotel.
06:09Screw the fucking lock off.
06:15Fuck ya.
06:16Okay, yo, see somebody just walk over here you see him
06:35Yo, okay over here. I don't know somebody over here
06:46What could you what's up for you I thought somebody just ran this way
07:16Pretty sure somebody ran this way
07:24After searching around the remote area for a brief period they would find their man and things would intensify
07:39Oh
08:09Put your hands up put it down put it down put it down
08:16Get on your f***ing face
08:19Hey put your hands out of your f***ing pocket
08:20The suspect later identified as 58-year-old Raymond Mattia
08:27Was shot nine times after throwing a sheathed machete toward an agent
08:32Then reaching in his pocket when told to put his hands in the air
08:35The medical specialist on the scene attempted to provide treatment to Mattia following the shots
08:41How you doing sir, this is it
08:42So we just had a shooting here
08:46In Managers, Arizona
08:48Subject's been hit four or five times
08:51We didn't count exactly
08:52We've been doing CPR since 2146
08:54No pulse, no breathing
08:56Do we need more bodies out here for product control?
09:04Probably wouldn't hurt
09:05The ambulance is still approximately 20 minutes, 30 minutes away
09:15And we're the nearest hospitals in an hour at least
09:17Call it, 10-0-6, 22-0-6, copy sir
09:26What was your name sir?
09:32Good copy, thank you sir
09:33Just continue guys
09:36Following the incident it was later revealed
09:43Mattia didn't have a firearm on him during the encounter
09:46And he possibly was reaching for a cell phone he had in his pocket
09:49The small town would come together and show support for Mattia
09:54Many suggesting the Customs Border Patrol agents were too quick to use lethal force
10:00But what are your thoughts on this story?
10:03Do you think the agents may have acted too quickly?
10:07Or was the night-time conditions, him reaching for something
10:10And them responding to a shots-fired call
10:13Make their decision somewhat understandable to fire in the moment?
